Strathmore-Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt said

he was unfairly portrayed, after he found himself in hot water when a Globe and Mail article
quoted him saying the NDP government duped
Alberta voters by keeping their promises.
Fildebrandt said he never used the words
duped, hoodwinked, or promises, all of which
were attributed to him in an article by Carrie Tait,
with the headline NDP duped Alberta voters,
Wildrose finance critic says.
The Shadow Finance Critic answered questions
from numerous reporters during a press scrum
following Premier Notleys speech to the Calgary
Chamber of Commerce. According to Fildebrandt,
his response to a question about the minimum
wage increase, meant that when the NDP wrote
their platform their odds of winning the election
were 1,000 to one, and that they probably figured
theyd never have the chance to implement it.
What I said was, they never expected to win
power and when you come to power you need to
be very careful on how you do things, he said.
You should study the economic impact of your
policies as youre implementing them. Somehow
a reporter unscrupulously said that I said that a
party should not keep its promises.
The article states that the Wildrose MLA said
the NDP platform was never intended to be implemented. The NDP platform was a hard-core
ideological document that was meant to pull the
then-ruling Progressive Conservative Party in a
particular direction, which matched up with the
official transcript and which Fildebrandt acknowledged he said. However it was the interpretation
and quotations of certain words, such as duped
and hoodwinked that bothered Fildebrandt.
The article severely twisted what I said out
of context, created new words and incendiary
phrases that I never actually spoke, and attributed ideas to me that I didnt have, said Fildebrandt. Ive got a pretty thick skin, but twisting
my words so badly out of context and outright
creating new ones, got under my skin a bit. It was
bad reporting, but I will just take it as a lesson
and learn from it.
Yet, when he was questioned about his comments on social media, some of his remarks
rubbed Albertans the wrong way. Mount Royals
department chair of Policy Studies Duane Bratt
tweeted Fildebrandt asking whether he was suggesting that had the Wildrose Party won the election, they wouldnt have a mandate to implement
in their campaign platform.

The Strathmore Musical Arts Society had

some time to catch up

performance in Strathmore on Oct. 17.

Strathmore Musical

Strathmore Musical Arts Society

looking forward to exciting 2016
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Its been two decades since a newlyestablished Strathmore Musical Arts
Society, with only four volunteers, organized their first event, bringing to
the stage hip-hop band House of Pain.
Since then, the society has set the stage
for numerous talents, kept the music
scene vibrant, and garnered so much
interest that their last show, the Travelling Mabels, ran over capacity.
When the society was created in
1996, founder Linda Storksons aim
was to fill a void within the community. Looking back, she said she never
imagined the society to become such a
staple in Strathmore.
There wasnt really anything here
in Strathmore promoting music, I love
music, so it was natural, said Storkson. Weve seen an increase in interest in what were presenting, weve
seen young artists that we had come
and open for our events turn around
and open for Miranda Lambert and
thats part of our mandate to encourage young people to present in front
of a large audience, connect with other
musicians, and find their way that way.

The organization, which is entirely

volunteer-based, now has seven members. Artists have been featured at a
number of locations including Kims
Caf and the Strathmore Golf Club.
However, the society has also assisted
in events such as the Strathmore 55
Plus Summer Games and the Alberta
Farm Days. Because of the society,
Strathmore was also privy to its first
barn dance this year.
Its just to have entertainment in
your home town as opposed to drive
to the city, a lot of people wouldnt
do it, so if you can bring it into your
home town it builds the community,
said Charlotte Wilson, whos been volunteering with the society for a year. I
think we can grow a lot more in terms
of awareness quite honestly, because I
think, I lived here for three years before it was even brought to my attention that these people were here because of that group.
We publicize our events but we
dont push our group a lot. If there was
somebody that wanted to do something musical here, dont start another
group join our group.
The non-profit organization scouts
new talent through musical festivals

like Rosebuds 15 Minutes of Fame and

the Southern Alberta Music Festival,
and is welcoming double-Juno-Award
winner Jack de Keyzer next November. While the society usually features
quality artists that havent hit the big
leagues yet to keep costs low, they are
looking to expand performances to include larger names and venues an
ambitious goal for the organization that
relies solely on ticket sales.
One local artists, Sykamore, who
opened up for Miranda Lambert two
weeks ago, understands the impact the
society has on the community as well
as young performers.
For a lot of kids its probably their
first real public debut in terms of playing in front of other people and when
youre young getting that affirmation
from other people is a real big catalyst
to keep going, Sykamore said, who has
a new single, Houseboat, coming out in
January on Country Radio. I think a lot
of kids who are musical dont always
have the right avenues to take in terms
of where they want to take their music,
and so to have a society in your community, I think is a great way for kids
to express that.
With Calgary-based singer and songwriter Son of Ray scheduled to perform
at the end of November, the societys
last 2015 event, the group is already
mapping out their next year. The
Strathmore Musical Arts Society has already confirmed Lewis and Royal, Dr.
Zeuss and Blue Whos, Jack de Keyzer,
and will also be bringing back the barn
dance.
Thats what were trying to do is
encourage music and culture in the
Strathmore area, and thats why at our
last event we had the Wheatland Arts
group bring their artwork into our
show, said Storkson. The other thing
is, our whole group is totally volunteer.
Its volunteer to the point where we
all pay for our own ticket to the event,
even though we put the work in. The
reason we do it is because we have a
passion for music, we love it, and want
to encourage it in the area.
Son of Ray will be at the Strathmore
Golf Club on Nov. 21. Tickets are $30
and the show starts at 6 p.m.

Q: Where can I scatter cremated remains?

A: In Alberta, as with most of Canada, there are

no actual laws pertaining to the scattering of

cremated remains. However, there are some
guidelines that should be followed. In all
cases, permission should be obtained prior
to scattering. Scattering is permitted on any
Crown land, including in water. National parks
prohibit the scattering of cremated remains
in water, although you may cast them to the
wind without obtaining permission. You may
also scatter cremated remains in most municipal
parks and cemeteries but only with permission
from the municipality. When scattering
cremated remains on private property, it is
important to obtain permission from the owner
of the land prior to the scattering. In any
case, when scattering cremated remains, it is
recommended that the scattering is done with
discretion.

Twitter trouble
Continued from Page 1

In response, Fildebrandt answered by
saying that a B-list reporter wrote an
intentionally torqued story, and added,
an ideologically-charged platform that
needs a reality check. He later tweeted
that Tait was auditioning for a job as the
latest press secretary in the Premiers Office a comment that he later removed.
The tweet had been posted shortly after
Fildebrandt refused to answer more of
Taits questions, saying sorry, were not
taking questions from political journalists and interrupted her question by
adding, Im not taking questions from
people who dont conduct themselves
professionally.
His actions baffled some constituents
who are now questioning his behaviour.
Fildebrandt stood by his B-list reporter
comment, but apologized for his later

Capsule Comments
Injuries from high heels has increased substantially
in the past decade. Many of the injuries were to the
foot and ankle while some also involved the knee,
head and neck. Broken bones were involved in
about 20% of the injuries. High-heeled shoes are
looked upon as stylish but risky from a health point
of view.
Are you a lark (early riser) or an owl (later to
bed)? Neither has an advantage over the other. The
key here is the number of hours of sleep you get. If
you have a 9-5 job, its good to be a lark but its not
as good for owls. Seven hours of sleep daily is a
great aid to better health.
Long term studies on aging found that signs of body
deterioration can be seen as early as age 26. But
how quickly we age is dependent only 20% on our
genes which means we can control how fast we age
by taking care of ourselves better. Keeping active,
getting enough sleep, watching what we eat and
getting regular medical checkups.all contribute to
a slower aging process.
Pharmacists are often asked what works to
prevent or shorten the duration of colds. Zinc
lozenges taken every two hours may help shorten a
cold but not prevent it. They shouldnt be taken for
more than one week. Hand-washing many times a
day will reduce your exposure to cold viruses and is
always recommended.
If you are going on a winter holiday, remember to
bring enough of your prescribed medication with
you. Getting replacements in a foreign country isnt
always easy.

Rosebud Church celebrates Polka Mass

Musicians from Rosebud and as far away as Edmonton gathered in Rosebud on Nov.1, to lead the fifth
annual service of communion and music presented in polka style. Ray Olson, Louisa Nelson, Connie
Canfield, Colleen Begeman, Bill Daugherty and Scott Heatcote played accordion, with Bill Hamm and
Mark Lewandowski on guitar, LaVerne Erickson on tone bells and Shauna Murphy on piano. Cassia
Schramm sang and Nathan Schmidt officiated. The annual service honours the memory of Reverend
Art Dahlen, who planned the service and wrote many of the lyrics but died before the first Polka Mass
was celebrated at the Rosebud Church.

County Councillor censure

Wheatland County council was engaged in a fiery discussion last week,

pertaining to the Wheatland County
Councillor Code of Conduct and the
statutory obligations of Councillors and
Council as set out in the Municipal Government Act (MGA).
While the details regarding the censure have not been made public, council was aware that her behaviour would
come under review at the 2015 organizational meeting, which was last week.
If she was following all of the procedures that they had laid out for her
up until then, they would lift it, and
she had been, said Lisa Bastarache,
communications officer for Wheatland
County. Shes still expected to (apologize). She wants to go through her lawyer with that. Council decided that they
would rather have Brenda apologize
for her actions rather than have council
apologize for her actions.
After council voted to lift the censure,
Councillor Ben Armstrong proposed a
motion to have council draft a letter to
apologize on Councillor Knights behalf
an undertaking she was unwilling to
perform at this time and without discussing the situation with her lawyer.
The proposal was heavily disputed by
Councillor Knight, Councillor Booth,
Councillor Bland, and Councillor Harwood. During the meeting, Councillor
Knight demanded to know why she
was censured and for the information
to be made public. However, Basta-

rache confirmed that Councillor Knight

was presented with all the information
on March 24, that a copy was retained
by her and her lawyer. Furthermore,
council was not permitted to discuss
the allegations, as they were originally
presented in an in-camera meeting a
private meeting not open to the public.
I have the right to defend myself,
said Councillor Knight at the meeting.
I havent done anything wrong if
I have, the judge will make me apologize.
Councillor Alice Booth was also outraged over a blunder by Councillor Ben
Armstrong, where he accidentally accused her of lying. Although he meant
Councillor Knight with the assertion,
Councillor Booth was worried that it
was a public meeting and her constituents might believe the claim.
According to Wheatland County, the
two public figures met afterwards, and
Councillor Armstrong apologized for
the slip-up he hadnt realized happened
at the time.
Earlier in the year, Reeve Glenn Koester had stated that Councillor Knight
took actions contrary to her obligations
as a councillor in her communications
with other municipalities, third parties, and Wheatland County staff. Her
involvement in the countys administrative functions also came under review.
The censure required Councillor Knight
to draft a formal written apology to the
Village of Hussar, the Village of Standard, the Village of Rockyford, and the
Town of Strathmore, for comments she
had made that did not reflect the position of Wheatland County.
The county continues to expect
Councillor Knight to make a formal
apology to the town and the villages,
and said she is currently discussing the
situation with her lawyer. As a result of
last weeks decision, Councillor Knight
is no longer bound by the procedures
laid out by council under the censure.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~ Fred & Maria Wutzke

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Fred can trace his family history back
to the early 1800s, where they farmed
in a German speaking district near the
Wista River in Poland.
Freds family had moved to Poland
from Germany, after being hired to construct a dam on the Wista River. It took
many years to construct, and afterwards
they remained in Poland to farm.
Fred was born in Poland in 1932, and
was part of a large family of four brothers and six sisters. Fred, his parents,
brothers and sisters were forced to leave
Poland in December
1945, and travelled
by train to Schleswig
Holstein, Germany,
which is located in
the middle of the
northernmost of the
16 Federal States of
Germany, close to
the southern border
of Denmark. The trip
took four months to
complete,
because
the train had to stop
so often. Remember
this trip was made
right after the end of WW2, with movement of people and vehicles very much
restricted. They settled in Schleswig Holstein, Germany until March 1951, when
Fred, his parents and five siblings boarded a ship bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Five other siblings stayed in Europe. On
arriving in Halifax, they then boarded a
train that would take seven days to reach
Lethbridge, where they had a contract
through the Lutheran Church to work
for sugar beet farmers in Picture Butte,
for two years. However, they had such
a great relationship with the farmer that
they stayed for three years, before moving to Calgary in November 1953.
Marias family originates from Romania, near Constanta on the Black Sea.
She can trace her family back to the
1850s where there were farmers in the
area. Maria was born in September 1933,
and moved with her family to Germany
in October 1939. Her father worked in a
huge airplane plant in Dessau, Germany.
As such he was pardoned and did not
have to fight as a soldier at the beginning of the Second World War. However, in 1944 he fought in Russia with the
German Army, but after six months was
wounded and sent back home to Germany. This saved his life because many
who fought in Russia did not make it
back home. Marias mother and five children had to leave their home in January 1945. They lived through some really
bad times, including being homeless for
eight months, and travelling on foot, or
on railway box cars. They decided to return to Romania, but on the way, their
nine-month-old sister died of starvation.
After 18 months they moved back to
Germany, where with the assistance of
the Red Cross, they were finally reunited
with their father. They lived in Osnabruck, Germany until August 1953 when
they boarded a ship bound for Halifax,
Nova Scotia then travelled across Canada

to Calgary where they had relatives. Fred and Maria met at

a dance in Calgary in 1953, and were married in 1954. This
wedding produced three sons - Gordon (born 1960), Jeffrey
(1961), and David (1963), and they now have two grandsons
Joshua and Rory.
Maria was a seamstress in Germany, a job she really enjoyed, and she had no difficulty getting a similar job in Calgary
where she spent six years. She had spent a year working at
the Calgary General Hospital, before the boys were born. Fred
was a Jack of all Trades, and worked at many jobs including
the railway, in a packing house, and in construction, before
purchasing a farm located 12 miles south of Strathmore, in
1964. That was a big change, as everything was run down
and needed repair. They worked very hard, assisted by many
very helpful neighbours. They built a beautiful ranch house
in 1969, and enjoyed raising their family on their dairy farm.
By the time they sold it in 1979, they
were milking 100 dairy cows, daily.
Fred and Maria then moved to
Strathmore, where the population
was around 1,000. Here they built
the carwash located behind what is
now Storefront School. They sold this
in 1991, and retired, except for Fred
who helped Wayne Risdon with haying for the next 20 years.
Their community activities mainly
took place whilst they lived on the
farm. Fred was a member of Carseland Lions Club for 45 years, and
served on the board of Carseland
Community Association. Maria was a
member of the Carseland PB Club. But, she was also kept very
busy with the chickens on the farm, looking after the farm
workers, and raising those three rambunctious boys. Theyve
always loved gardening, and continue to enjoy working the
large garden at Arlene Holdahls farm. Both Fred and Maria
were avid curlers, and attended bonspiels throughout the area.
The biggest changes they have seen is the population growth
from 1,000 in 1979, to over 13,000 now, and having all the
roads paved.
They both enjoy travelling, and their most memorable trip
was in 1993, when they went to Poland, along with other family members, to visit Freds sister and the old family farm. They
have spent 14 winters in Yuma, Ariz. which has given them
many wonderful memories.
They are very happy living in Canada. It is a great country!

LIVING ABOVE THE STORMS

Meteorologists have observed
that there are different kinds of
storms. There is hail, thunder,
ice, tornadoes, lightning, heavy
snow, floods, tropical and
hurricane storms. Relating this
to lifes situations, storms can
take different forms and shapes
in the life of a person. A storm
could be economic, political,
financial, social to name but a
few.
The storms of life put men under intense pressure and have
the capacity to toss them to and
fro. Although storms may be an
undesirable natural phenomenon, their occurrence has some
great advantages too. It was
economic storm that brought
Peter to Jesus Christ Luke 5:111. Whatever storm brought you
to Jesus, He can calm it. How
do I know? Because He controls every storm, and everything here on earth, underneath
the earth and heaven must obey
Him. Daniel was faced with
political storm. God commanded the lions not to touch Daniel
and they obeyed. The fish
obeyed Him. God prepared a
fish to swallow Jonah but must
not digest him since he couldnt
swim. The birds obeyed Him 1
Kings 17:4&6.

A few lessons from Matthew

14:22-32: after feeding 5,000
men, Jesus told the disciples
to go to the other side while
He went to pray. There was a
storm and the disciples were
confused. Jesus rescued them
to safety.
On the path of progress, storms
will always come.
There is no one who can tell
when the storm would come.
The intervention of Jesus
always brings calmness.
It is dangerous to be caught in a
storm without Jesus.
Ensure you are on the side of
the Lord John 15:14; John
11:11.
Maintain your relationship with
Jesus, this will give you a quick
intervention when storms come.
Divine presence is the secret to
live above the storms.
When you establish and maintain a good relationship with
God, you will experience peace
in the midst of storm. Great
peace keeps you stable and
strong no matter what you face
in life. May Gods presence put
an end to every raging storm in
your life.

Westmount student rescues

horses in grandpas memory
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

What started out as a class
research project quickly turned
one elementary students passion into a successful initiative
to save horses and honour her
grandfathers memory.
Westmount
Elementary
Schools Grade 6 student Hailey
Buck began researching the topic of horse slaughter during the
summer. When the assignment
arose to write about something
she was passionate about, Buck
lunged at the chance to educate
her friends and classmates about
the practice.
In doing so, she enlisted the
help of her mother, stepfather,
and grandmother to bake and
decorate over 400 cookies and
cupcakes for staging a twoday bake sale, with proceeds
- $335.30 - going to two local
horse rescue organizations. By
organizing the sale to occur on
Oct. 14 and Oct. 15, her grandfathers death day, Buck took the
opportunity to recognize him.
My grandpa passed away on
Oct. 15 [last year] and hed be
really proud of me for doing
it, so I wanted to do it in his
memory, the 12-year-old said.
I dont like sticking out, I kind
of go with the flow most of the
time. So when I told my mom
this is what Im doing, I kind of
felt bad, but I knew I wanted
to do it, and even if she didnt
help, I knew Id find a way to
get it done. Figure out how to
bake them and hopefully they

wouldnt turn out black.

With her helpers busy in the
kitchen, Buck stepped out of
her comfort zone and started
promoting her sale through
word-of-mouth, posters, and
even took to the PA system at
her school. Along with support
from her mothers colleagues,
friends, Westmount Elementary
School teachers, and other students in the school, Buck sold
out in no time.
She said mama this is what
Im doing it on and shes so passionate about animals, so I said
ok Ill support you, Haileys
mother Jessica Shaw said. Its
for a great cause, it was great,
and I am so proud of her. Its
a little bake sale, so we kind
of went I hope she does well,
because I didnt want her to be
discouraged. But I was pretty
proud when she came and said
I sold it all.
Canadas horse slaughtering industry claims the lives
of 70,000 to 115,000 horses a
year, and over 300 a day in Alberta for human consumption.
The animals facing such a fate
are often young and healthy
including weanlings, yearlings,
and two-year-olds. Following
her report, which received an E
for excellent, Shaw went out to
two non-profit rescue organizations Last Chance and Dare to
Dream - to provide them each
with $167.65.
It is through fundraising efforts like hers that we can try to
save more and we have told her
that we will save a colt and she

Twelve-year-old Hailey Buck organized

a two-day bake sale at Westmount Elementary School to help save horses
destined for the slaughterhouse. Having raised $335.30, the student donated
$167.65 each to two horse rescues including Last Chance Horse Rescue,
which she got to visit on Oct. 18.

can name it, said Mandy Royko,

with Last Chance Horse Rescue.
She reminds me of me when
I was a little girl. We have been
using our own resources to save
and provide for these horses
who can not speak for themselves. This is why Hailey touches our hearts. She knows how
much time and effort go into
one horse and we have quite a
few right now, so any bit of fundraising helps.
Buck is already looking forward to spring when she plans
to have another bake sale, and
hopes to expand her endeavour
to the other schools.

Teens voice helps kids learn

math worldwide
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Life isnt ordinary for 14-year-old
Donovan Snider. The teen has already
acted in his fair share of Rosebud plays,
has starred in a few movies, and just returned from a trip to London, England,
where he was part of a theatre study trip.
Yet its his distinctive voice that is being
recognized across the world in the math
weakness and dyscalculia-screening test
and training serious game Meister Cody
Talasia.
A year and a half ago, Snider
broke onto the international
stage when he provided the
voice for Prince Fandales in the
American version of Germanys
global multi-award winning
math game. The resource aims
to help elementary school children improve their math skills,
and while Snider enjoys the subject, he
has seen a number of his peers struggle.
I see kids in my class struggling and
I do often wish that there was a way
I could help them easily, said Snider.
Theres not a perfect solution to every
problem but it does feel good to be a
part of a project that works towards a
goal of helping kids be able to understand in a way that may be easier in a
video format. I know I can often learn
things from a video that would be harder to explain just by mouth.
Although Snider has been involved
in voicing projects for five years - since
his family created a home-based recording studio called SniderVoices Meister
Cody was the teens first solo project
which he recorded. It didnt take him
long to figure out Prince Fandaless
character with his fun personality, problem-solving trait, and a bit of an attitude.
Above all, Snider loved the idea of act-

ing with a sister, which he lacks in real

life.
Donovan immediately understood
how this character works, said Christina
Ziem, Creative Director of Kaasa health.
He embodies the personality of Fandales with very little direction needed.
Thanks to his exceptionally professional
work, our serious game gains even more
depth. It is really a breathtaking performance.
Over the years, Snider has acted in
Rosebuds Theater productions of the
Canadian Badlands Passion
Play, Our Town, Jacks Giant
Adventure, and Treasure Island. For the past seven years,
he was also a member with the
Rosebud Younger Company,
and appeared in Movie Makers
feature films, including Mayflower II, My Grandpa Detective and Remember, as well as
a Dell Computers commercial. Having
been constantly surrounded by the arts
all his life, Snider, who is also a writer,
artist, cartoonist, and craft maker, is confident acting will always remain a part
of his life.
For me in my young age Ive been
able to memorize scripts quickly and
that feels good but thats not nearly all
theres to it, he said. I really enjoy how
much of a learning experience each production I get to be in is. I really do want
acting to be a part of my career in the
future even though I have a whole lot
of ambitions and endeavors. I feel really
grateful to live in Rosebud, because its
such a great opportunity to get these
great experiences.
The English version has already received the 2015 International Serious
Play award. For more information on

Christmas hamper kicks off Nov. 14

JEAN BUTHFER
Strathmore & Wheatland County
Christmas Hamper Society

The Strathmore & Wheatland County
Christmas Hamper Society kicks off its
2015 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 14.
Yes, you did read that right the name
has now been changed by the membership at its annual meeting to be more
inclusive of the Wheatland Countys
contribution to the success of the hamper drive.
This will be the 30th year the society
has delivered generous Christmas hampers to needy families in Strathmore
and the Wheatland County.
The original idea started in 1981
when The Happy Gang heard of a
familys financial plight and gave out
one hamper. Eventually in 1985, the
society was formed as a charity and
has carried on the tradition of assisting
families enjoy a better Christmas than
they would have otherwise had.
Gwen Moggey, the Chairperson of
the Society, says that its business as
usual with the name change.
Last year saw 218 hampers filled, up
from the previous years total of 189
which was quite remarkable as it was a
very short campaign due to the way the
calendar worked.
This year the campaign will run a full
term from Nov. 14 to Dec. 22 and with
the uncertainty in the economy there is
every reason to be a little pessimistic
that numbers of hampers required will
be as many, if not more than last year.
So the challenge is there for the com-

munities to step up to the plate, open

their hearts and purses and to repeat
past years generous giving. Each hamper will contain generous amounts of
food and toys, with food in sufficient
quantities to last a typical family well
into the New Year.
None of this could be achieved without the valuable support of the local
schools, churches, service clubs and
countless volunteers.
Collection points for food and toys
will be set up around Strathmore and
the surrounding villages. Monetary donations can be mailed to The Strathmore & Wheatland County Christmas
Hamper Society, c/o Strathmore FCSS,
680 Westchester Rd. Strathmore, Alta.
T1P 1J1
The typical family we assist is usually
where both parents are working but
their budgets are stretched to the point
of breaking and there is little, if anything left over for Christmas presents
for the children.
Volunteers, and this year we are definitely looking for men, are needed to
sort food and toys, please register with
the Strathmore FCSS at 403-934-9090
In Strathmore and the Wheatland
County we can again be proud that we
are right up there at the top of generous giving at Christmas time in the
whole of Canada, not just Alberta.
Statistics at the Canada Revenue
Agency place us second against the
West Coast Christmas Hamper Society
in Victoria, B.C, with them beating by
us by only $8,000 in giving. Now thats
like comparing David and Goliath!

Life as an international student

SABRINA KOOISTRA
Times Jr. Reporter

As a country, we are raised in a multicultural
environment which thrives on diversity. As generations pass, our society is becoming more and more
like this and is making Canada a multi-perspective,
culturally rich society. Though we often only identify this sort of diversity through immigration, it is
also vital that we recognize the spirit of internationalism resulting from exchange students in our
communitys schools. With the coming of International Week, which runs from Nov. 18-20, we want
to recognize these students who are making a positive impact in their life, school, and family, while
sometimes sacrificing the comforts of their norm.
Dixin (Cindy) Li from China, Sana Shibazaki
from Japan, Gurpreet Singh Sethi from India, Josephine Brekelmans from the Netherlands, Linn
Schnewolff from Germany, and Lemmy Onukwugha from Nigeria, are a few of the 63 individuals attending Strathmore High School as international students.
The experience of living here is really good and
Im really glad that I got the opportunity. said Josephine, a Grade 10 student who is able to speak
Catalan, Dutch, German, English, and Spanish.
The students all agreed that the experience of
coming to Canada was different culturally, but also
geographically as well as in terms of infrastructure.
Things are always bigger here than in Europe,
like the supermarkets, the cars, the houses, everything is just bigger. Linn, a Grade 10 student, commented.
Sana, a Grade 11 student noted, less buildings
and lots of fields, grasslands and less people than
Japan.
Each of the students also expressed their excitement in visiting Banff, trying maple syrup, and believe it or not, the cold weather and snow.
The best thing Ive done is (eat) Timbits ... no ...
I mean, (they are) good. Linn joked.
She also said, I really wanted to go to Banff and
then I went ... it was really pretty.
There were several reasons why these six individuals had a desire to choose Canada as their
place of temporary residence to study. Some of
those reasons include Canadas music scene, academic studies, and finding their independence.
More than the culture shock, being away from
home, family, and friends, along with adapting to
a new place, the students noted the various school
habits and structure here in Canada.
Its a better country for schooling, Gurpreet
quoted, (The) curriculum is more optionalized
Cindy added, (Canadian) students know more
about our cultures. Sometimes we learn about (it)
in our social class and its totally different.
Apart from the differing curriculums, the students reminisced on school spirit and the students
willingness in making international friendships. I
like the school here more than in Germany because you have more options, and the classes are
more fun. People (here) want to learn something.

Sana also had similar feelings about school here

compared to her home country.
In Japan, after school we have second school
which is until 10 oclock at night, so its a little bit
easier here than in Japan.
What is most important to these students and
their families is the influence that studying in Canada will have on their life as they progress into
adulthood. The benefit of learning English is one
of the predominant reasons along with more enjoyable classes and options, was what they kept
in mind when selecting their country to study,
embracing the immersion into a different culture
and how this experience will assist them in finding their future career was also taken into consideration.
I (think) that it will open up more paths for
me. Josephine mentioned.
In Germany, Linn said, The older people dont
really speak English, but you learn it in schools,
and you really have to speak English, because if
you want to get a good job, they expect you to
speak at least English and German. If not, also like
French and Spanish.
For some of the students, learning a new language in a foreign country is one for professional
purposes, but for Sana, learning French is simply
of interest. I really want to go to Quebec, because
of French, and like Japanese people only speak
Japanese, not even English, so its like, special for
me to have a second optional language.
Lemmy approached the subject in an alternative
way, Its influenced me positively because now I
know how various people think because Ive been
surrounded by people from different cultures, he
said.
When you live in a different country and then
you learn how to live independently, (you) experience more by yourself. Experience on how to manage your life, how to manage your studies. Cindy
explained. I do like Canada, and my parents want
me to live here, too.
The week of Nov.18-20, these students along
with many others from SHS will be showcasing
their diversity through preparing traditional meals,
sporting special attire, and simply educating the
school on the wonderful possibly unknown aspects of their cultures.
You dont really hear a lot about other countries that arent America, and in Europe we do, but
maybe International Week is a good opportunity
to tell them how we live. Josephine said.
Sometimes we just dont want to be different,
but we know that (we cant) change that.
Cindy said. Youre really treating us very good,
like we have a lot of Canadian friends, we talk very
happily and theyre really friendly.
Having first hand experience, Linn provided final
advice for aspiring international students: Well I
just wanted to come here to experience something
new and get to know a different culture, and get
to know people from different countries. I would
say they should definitely go to a different country
just to experience it.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Reflecting on Remembrance Day

To the Editor
I am a graduate of The War Amps Child Amputee
(CHAMP) Program, and its Operation Legacy, which is
made up of members and graduates of CHAMP who
are dedicated to teaching the younger generation
about the importance of remembrance.
Amputee veterans started The War Amps nearly 100
years ago, and later created CHAMP to share their
knowledge and assistance with us. Operation Legacy
allows us to honour them and carry their legacy into
the future.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of

the Second World War. On Remembrance Day, it is
important for Canadians to reflect on the significance
of this anniversary and honour the brave men and
women who have and continue to serve for Canada.
I will take a moment of silence and reflect on the significance of not only this day but for every day that I,
like many Canadians, get to live freely.
Sincerely,
Aleah Negus
Operation Legacy Member, Calgary

The Winnie the Pooh walk

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
A lot of things come to your mind when youre
stuck in a fence. Let me back track a little. With
Octobers warm weather, I hit our pathways more
than ever before, and even Doc was happy with my
weight and blood pressure!
However, I decided to cut through a Strathaven
green space to check it out for a possible new one.
Thats when I had my own Winnie the Pooh in the
honey jar moment! You see, sometimes the 55-yearold Pat still sees himself as the 35-year-old Pat. I saw
a narrow opening where one fence ended at another,
so I was sure with my latest weight loss successes,
that I could fit. I could not!
As I tried to push my girth through, I did indeed
get stuck! Not stuck as in call the fire department
for the jaws of life, but stuck enough that there
was some pain involved pushing myself back out!
Theres nothing you can do but laugh in this situation, because you know there are people in their
front rooms laughing at you, too! For a second or
two, I wished I had some butter ... but no, then Id
probably have eaten it!
That brings me back to the various things that
flashed through my mind while I was stuck. The first
was, that Im one of those people who hate the labels on the back of new shirts! I cant stand anything
rubbing on the back of my net ... I could feel the red
rash forming right then! In fact, I will either tear out
the label, or wash the shirt a few times before I wear
it, to soften that stupid label. Sometimes Ive had a
really nice shirt with a small hole right in the back
of the collar ... now that doesnt look dorky, does it?
However, at least theres nothing scratching the crap
out of my neck!
If youre a 60s or 70s kid, and had working parents, you were probably a latch key kid. Thats a
working class kid who had his own house key to
get in after school. My key was attached to a shoe
lace, which was then tied to one of the belt loops

on my 70s corduroy pants! Yep, the key stayed safe,

I had something to fiddle with when I got bored ...
heck, it was even an attached weapon to use on my
brother, if I needed it! No matter when I got home, I
was safe from bad guys ... I could get into my own
Fortress of Solitude like Superman, and read some
of my comics!
I also thought for a second of my strange lot in
life. My parents worked hard to help me get educated, and I was able to get two University degrees.
Sure, one was a PE degree, but still ... two degrees,
and lately Ive had to wipe my 15 year old dogs butt
pretty regularly! Yep, theres nothing like being your
dogs personal valet and care giver, to give you a
dose of humility! Of course, he hates this, and I have
to chase him with a fresh wet wipe ... that must look
strange to the neighbors, too! Its funny how many
thoughts can fly through your mind when youre
chunky and stuck in a fence.
The last thing that hit me before I popped out of
the trap, was watching my son curl the other night.
Now you know, Im no curling expert, but my son
was cleaning a rock at the end of an end! I thought,
when did he become a skip, I thought he played
second? Yet here he was, cleaning the rock, setting
it up, clearing in front of the hack. Then I saw it. He
had done all this for his skip! What a guy, he was
the skips butler! It must be so cool to be a skip on a
young team, and have a butler! So, with that, I freed
myself and began to ramble along on my walk. I was
sure I saw a curtain move in the large picture window of a house. Maybe it was Boo Radley I thought
(To Kill a Mockingbird), but no, with my luck it was
probably my Associate Principal, and Id hear it at
the high school for the next year!
(Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written
by long-time resident, town councillor, high school
teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule.

When nine-year-old Chase
Gingerich gets bored he
starts to run. He runs during his recess break, he runs
with his running club, and
even at a fundraising even
held in his honour. The skinny youngster can easily eat
his dad under the table with
a 3,000-calorie diet, and has
an infectious humour and
positive outlook that inspired his friends and family
daily. While Chase appears
to be like most other kids
his age, under the surface
his body is fighting a genetic
disorder that already caused
him to endure more hospital
visits than most people will
experience in a lifetime.
After taking off his sleep
apnea mask that prevents
him from failing to breathe
in his sleep, his day starts
with 32 pills, inhalers, and
continuous
maintenance
of his body weight with a
3,000-calorie diet. Once a
month, Chase requires painful injections to combat a
fungus in his lungs he is
allergic to, and hospitalization, antibiotics, and steroids

have become a benchmark in

their every-day lives. Thats
because Chase is suffering
from cystic fibrosis, an incurable fatal hereditary disease
that affects the digestive system and lungs in children
and young adults. Because
of his disease, Chase and
his parents are now looking
forward to a trip to Legoland
next Christmas a trip made
possible by the Make a Wish
Foundation.
Its overwhelming and
Im excited for him, said his
mother Brandy Andersen. It
means the world to be able
to give him this I cant say
that I would ever be able to
do this for him. For the three
of us to go, even though [his
dad] and I are separated,
we still try to do things as a
group with him.
Andersen made the local
news earlier this year when
the community banded together to raise funds for
the family, after Andersens
vehicle broke down. She relied on friends and familys
vehicles to take her son to
the hospital; which added
up to a minimum of 17 trips
a year.

2015 - THE 70th ANNIVERSARY OF VICTORY IN EUROPE (VE) DAY (NETHERLANDS)

(and WHY THE DUTCH LOVE THE CANADIANS)
After D-Day, in June of 1944, the western Allies
advanced to the Dutch border. In September the Dutch
began celebrating what they thought would be their
liberation. The Allies had launched Operation Market
Garden and tried to advance to the Dutch-Belgian
border across the rivers Meuse, Waal and Rhine into
the north of the Netherlands and Germany. They were,
however, unable to capture the Rhine bridge at the
Battle of Arnhem. During Market Garden, regions to
the south, including Nijmegen, Eindhoven and Almost
all of North Brabant, were liberated. Most of the
northern Netherlands stayed under German occupation
until the Rhine crossing in March 1945. Portions of
southern Netherlands were not liberated by Operation
Market Garden. Eventually, the German bridgehead
was destroyed. Simultaneously, the Allies advanced to
the province of Zeeland. The Germans still occupied
the approaches to the port of Antwerp. The Germans
had to be cleared from this entire area. The coastal
guns on Walcheren were silenced in the beginning
of November and the Scheldt battle was over. No
German forces remained intact along the 64 mile path
to Antwerp. The winter of 1944-1945 was extremely
harsh, which led to the hunger winter. Many cases of
starvation (about 30,000 casualties), exhaustion, cold
and disease were caused by the Dutch famine of 1944.

The Germans cut off all food and fuel shipments to the
western provinces of 4.5 million people. There was
severe malnutrition and 18,000 people starved to
death. Canadian forces finally entered the Netherlands
from the east, and liberated the eastern and northern
provinces. The western provinces, where the situation
was the worst, had to wait until the surrender of
German forces in the Netherlands, negotiated on
the eve of May 5, 1945 (3 days before the general
capitulation of Germany). Operation Manna,
the airdrop of food by the Allied forces,
was a huge salvation to the Dutch, and
never forgotten. The dancing and parties for
the liberation of all of the Netherlands ensued.
Some 205,901 Dutch men and women had died
because of the war. The Netherlands had
the highest per capita death rate of all Nazioccupied countries in Western Europe
(2.36%). Over half (207,000) were Holocaust
victims, deported and murdered Jews. World
War II left many lasting effects on Dutch society. On
May 4th, the Dutch commemorate those who died during
the war. The Dutch had been occupied by the Germans
for 5 long years. Is it any wonder that they hold so much
reverence and love for the Canadian liberators? They
will be forever in their hearts.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Wheatland students take part

MIRIAM OSTERMANN

Owing to their efforts in raising money for the purchase of goats in Kenya
last year, nine Wheatland Elementary
School students were able to attend the
WE Day event last week, and are eagerly working on new projects to earn
tickets for next years Grade 6 students
to attend the sought-after event.
WE Day, which featured numerous
world-renowned speakers and awardwinning artists at Calgarys Scotiabank
Saddledome, started almost eight years
ago across Canada, the United States,
and the United Kingdom, to spark inspiration among students to create
change locally and globally.
Because tickets to the event cant
be purchased, students are required
to take on a local and global action
through We Schools. With the success
of last years efforts, all eight students
involved in the schools student leadership executive council plus one additional student were able to attend the
empowering event.
It was really inspirational, really
powerful, you learned a lot, and the
main thing is that it made me really
think about how one spark can become one worldwide movement, said
executive council president Morgan LaChance.

year, but just last month the school
donated over 2,300 items to go to
the Wheatland County food bank and
the Strathmore and District Christmas
Hamper Society through the We Scare
Hunger campaign in collaboration with
Strathmore Ford.
We have a lot of stuff and lots of
food, so if we can give back, we can
help other people have food and stuff
who dont have it, said Alizabeth Hansen, an alternate on the council.

Wheatland Elementary students step up for WE

Continued from Page 19
I really dont know a lot about
whats happening in other countries so
just learning about that opens my mind
and my eyes to see how I can help and
what I can do for other people, that I
couldnt see before.
The Me to We movement requires
schools to take on one local and one
global initiative. In doing so, the students are exposed to issues far away,
but are also reminded and made aware
of the problems closer to home. While
each student had their own reason for
being a part of the council which they
had to be elected for in a process involving campaigning and speeches
they are all eager to continue in such
initiatives once they move on to junior
high school next year.
My grandma and my grandpa do a
lot of mission work in Thailand and
Cambodia and I think that I dont want

to just sit here and watch them, I want

to do something about that too, and I
think its a great way to take initiative,
said Keisha Stoffregen, the vice president of the executive council.
The rest of the year is bound to be a
busy one for the council, which is planning on tackling a different We Change
activity each month. The school also
raises funds through their Chocograms
sale at Valentines Day, participates in
Jump into Jammies to help support the
local crisis shelter, and on Nov. 20, will
be taking part in We are Silent a measure where people who live in countries with freedom of speech remain
silent for a day in support of those who
dont have a voice in their country.
With numerous We Change activities
on the horizon, the executive council
hopes to earn some more tickets for
next years representatives to participate in WE Day.

Rhett Harten (front), Jack Slemp, Morgan LaChance, Isla Gibson-Smith, Alizabeth Hansen,
Grady Stovka, Ashton Frese, Jesse Neufeld, and
Kaisha Stoffregen, the Wheatland Elementary
School student leadership executive council, attended the WE Day event on Oct. 27 at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Bisons finding groove

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The CFR Bisons may have found what the
doctor ordered in terms of offense and finding
the back of the net in a 7-1 win over Grande
Prairie last weekend.
Head coach Sandy Henry said the team has
finally been rewarded for their efforts but he
needs all of the lines to thrive on that momentum.
Its nice, said Henry. I think what we want
to work towards in the long term is to spread
that scoring through our lines. Were heavily
loaded on one line right now. We need the
other three lines to pick up some of that momentum and slack and spread us out a little so
were not quite as one dimensional as we are.
He mentioned that the lines did have a significant amount of offensive zone time and
their play in the neutral zone was effective.
Cameron Shorrock scored three goals to
lead the attack, Zach Vinnell supplied two
while Kyle Gordon and Gary Haden each added one goal in the Oct. 31 win.
In the 3-3 tie against the Fort Saskatchewan
Rangers on Sunday afternoon, Henry felt that

it was an achievable game but the Bisons just

could not capitalize at opportune times.
I thought we played pretty hard today,
said Henry. I thought we did enough to
win to get two points and we got one. Thats
sometimes how you get treated in this game.
We had two good solid outings in a row and
thats what were going to sit on right now.
He did caution he doesnt want the team to
drastically push too hard and get caught out
of position doing it.
Shorrock pulled the hat trick to supply the
offense in the tie.
Shorrock, who has eight goals in his last
four games, credits much of his offensive output to his linemates.
My linemates set me up all the time, said
Shorrock. After one, it just gets the whole
bench going, just feeding off their energy. Im
more confident and just seeing the league and
how our guys did it last year and learn from
everyone.
The Bisons will hit the road for two games
this weekend beginning with the Sherwood
Park J. Ennis Kings on Nov. 7 at 8:45 p.m. and
the Knights of Columbus Pats on Nov. 8 at

Peewee Badgers off to finals;

bantams edged
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Badgers peewee football team is off to the finals for a second year in a row, thanks to a fundamentally sound
day on both sides of the ball in a 56-32 win over Olds on Oct. 31.
The coaching staff emphasized to the players that they
shouldnt be overconfident going into the game and to go out
and have fun. Furthermore, they gave the team credit.
We rebounded nicely, said assistant coach Travis Ericksteen.
We had a slow start and we fumbled the ball on the first play.
We gave up a touchdown on the first defensive play. But we told
the boys its the beginning of the game, lots of time left, and
they settled in they seemed to have calmed down and played
their game and away we went.
Ericksteen added they had made adjustments at various points
in the game but thinks the players adapted well to the playbook.
We tried some new stuff today, said Ericksteen. Olds likes to
run the ball up the middle a lot and these guys did. We started to
run a 3-4 defense, thats the first time weve ever done that and
were really happy with how that worked out.
The Badgers will host the Innisfail Cyclones at noon in the B
finals on Nov. 7 at Strathmores Crowther Memorial Junior High
School.
Meanwhile, the bantam Badgers could not complete the comeback on the Red Deer Lindsay Thurber Raiders, as they were
ousted 16-14 and ended what was otherwise a successful season
for the bantam program.
They were a good team, really well-balanced, said head
coach Sean Seafoot. They were passing a lot more than we expected. We had a few turnovers, a few bad snaps. Just a few tiny
things that you can pick and point through the game.
Seafoot reflected on the undefeated regular season by saying
they scored a lot of points to have big point differentials and
the defence earned a couple of shutouts. He added that he was
proud of the team and thinks the chemistry is only going to get
stronger next year.

Strathmore Curling
Club seeing
improvements
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Curling Club recently received through renovations a new
center divider and new carpet, just in
time for the new season, where the club
already experienced an influx in curlers.
The upgrades were done in time for
being rewarded with an event from
Southern Alberta Curling Association
(SACA) in a few months time.
The club was awarded the Southern
Alberta Mens District play downs in
December, and Strathmore Curling Club
president Craig Koch thinks this is a
great opportunity for exposure.
At the end of the day its about the
ice, said Koch. If you have great ice,
that attracts people to come to bonspiels and attracts people to play in
leagues. With a four-sheet rink, we can
only host certain events and fortunate
enough to secure that one. Our ice technicians are pretty connected. They put
the word out.
Koch said the kids program this year
is pretty full, particularly in the age 6-12
category, and hopes to see more partici-

pation at that level. For $80, he said, you

will not find an activity running for two
hours that inexpensive.
Additionally, the increase in players
has been felt in the other divisions: the
mens league is up four teams, bringing
the total to 16; the mixed league is up
two teams, bringing the total to 22; the
ladies have 12 teams and the seniors
teams go anywhere between 12 and 16
teams who play three sessions a week.
He credits much of the growth in
numbers to his staff.
Our sponsors are a big part of what
helps us grow there, said Koch. We
have a great working relationship with
the Town of Strathmore. I have excellent people on my board of directors
that all work tirelessly and volunteer
a lot of hours on. All my league reps
coordinate set schedules, organize the
bonspiels.
He hopes for not only this season but
also the future that the club only improves their leagues more and has more
champions come out of it at big events.

The Strathmore CHAOS club volleyball clubs are undergoing some changes. The girls team is looking at the possibility of expanding their teams, while
the program is wanting to incorporate
boys teams and is actively looking for
coaches in both divisions.
We believe CHAOS volleyball was a
huge success last year, said coach Greg
Appleyard. The way we look at success is the commitment the girls put in
and by the end of the year, every week,
every month, weve seen growth in the
way they competed and in ourselves as
coaches.
He added that the coaches have to re-

late to the girls and boys players and

provide a fun environment. However,
the teams also have to show a good
work ethic and have a high compete
level.
We want to compete, said Appleyard. We want to represent the town
or the region. When we look at coaches
we want to make sure that they have
the ability to commit the time. The time
can be anywhere from eight to 15 hours
a week. We want to make sure we have
two decent practices, if not three a
week.
Player and coaching applications can
be found at www.strathmorechaos.com
with the coaching applicant deadline
set for Nov. 20.
Player tryouts begin on Nov. 30.

Butterwick lifts Chiefs over Okotoks

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

It appeared the Wheatland Chiefs
were destined to settle for a 1-1 tie with
Okotoks on Nov. 1, until local player
Robert Butterwick got a gift up the
middle and capitalized on the Okotoks
mistake for his first goal of the season.
At the 1:24 mark, Butterwick seized
the opportunity by being at the right
place at the right time.
The defense tried to fire it down the
ice, I caught it in the air and threw it
down and shot, didnt even look, said
first year forward.
Despite a 5-3 loss to the CRAA Blue
on Friday, he thought the team played
well, in spite of recent injuries.
We played good both games, he
said. The first game we took a couple
shifts off. They scored five goals you
cant take shifts off in this league.
The difference between the loss and
the come-from-behind win was focus
and determination.
Riley Romashenko scored the other
goal in the win against Okotoks.
Chris Rebeyka, Brad Hendricks and
Zach Suntjens scored in the loss to the
Blues.
The local midget double-A team
played Nov. 4 in Calgary against CRAA
Gold (results unavailable as of press

time), They will host the Medicine Hat

Hounds in Hussar on Nov. 7 at 5 p.m.
before hitting the road to play the AB
Central Selects on Nov. 8.
Braves back on track
The Wheatland Braves continued to
find ways to win as they topped the Lethbridge Hurricanes Red 5-2 on Nov. 1.
Assistant coach Rylan Muenchrath
said the team was ready to play in a
much closer contest compared to the
11-2 win earlier in the season against
Lethbridge.
This time it was a better game, said
Muenchrath. They played well, a couple of errors, that cost us some goals
but the goalie played well on their side.
It couldve been a different score, but
our guys played well.
Although they were coming off their
first defeat last weekend, he gave credit
to the team for not coming to the rink
with their heads low and thought that
their penalty kill was strong.
We havent had practice with the
penalty kill a whole lot, being early in
the season, but theyre starting to pick it
up, said Muenchrath.
Adam Kirkpatrick sniped three while
Nolan Muhussier and Tristan Zandee
tallied one each in the win.
The local peewee double-A team will
be home to face the Cranbrook Eagles
on Nov. 6 in Hussar at 7:30 p.m. before

The Wheatland Chiefs won a 2-1 barnburner over the Okotoks Oilers at the Strathmore Family Centre

goals while Keith Yellowfly added one
in the win.

Junior B Hawks fly high in home tourney

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Holy Cross Collegiate junior B Hawks girls and
boys volleyball teams surprised everyone at their yearend home tournament as there were a lot of close rallies that got the home fans excited for their kids.
The boys were defeated in straight sets in the finals
by Lawrence Grassi of Canmore and the girls pushed
their semifinal to the sudden death third set where
they fell to Three Hills by two points.
I think at the beginning we were a little asleep,
said junior B-girls coach Alex Hutcheon.
But then we woke up and played as a team. Our

last game we lost in the semi-finals. We lost the first

set, won the second set and lost in third-tie breaker
set 17-15. They fought right until the end, it was really
good.
Hutcheon mentioned that starting out slow and
finishing strong was the trend of their season, while
fighting tooth and nail every game, but found it difficult to get over the hump.
We just wouldnt get a bounce here and there, it
wouldve helped us win, he said.
It wasnt anything to do with their effort. I can tell
you we were always inches away from success.
He added that the teams strengths were communication and basic fundamentals of the game.

A goal for Jason Burns boys team all season was

to perform well in the home tournament and to give
themselves a shot at the final, and they followed
through with their ambition and provided some great
excitement in the finals match.
It was exciting, said Burns. We lost in the championship round but at the same time at the end of the
tournament I mentioned to the guys would you have
ever thought that wed be playing in a championship
game? They were absolutely surprised, but we just got
outcompeted.
He added that their level of growth from the start of
the season to the finish was substantial in experiencing success in tournaments.

Mortgage Matters by Strathmores Mortgage Specialist

Mortgages versus credit cards are you at your limit?
Most people who own a home have a credit card. You need it for all kinds of major purchases: a new TV, building a
new deck, maybe even new appliances or better yet, a much needed, well-deserved, yes you earned it, kind of vacation.
Everyone knows that the best thing you can do is pay off the credit card every month. So a few months have gone by and
that credit card balance is still there. Now wait a minute, something else happened to you and your life and that credit
card balance is still there. Time has slipped by and you have been carrying a $15,000 balance on your credit card at 21
per cent interest for months now. No big deal, I will just keep making the minimum payments.
Yes you must make the minimum payments - but it will not get paid off this way. Its not entirely your fault. You make
the some money, have the same expenses, live the same lifestyle, and the lottery is just not working the way it used to.
If you own your own home, consider refinancing. If you are able to to pay off all these credit lines and debts owing how
would that make you feel. If you have a mortgage of $300,000 and you are able to add $15,000 to it and pay it all off at
3 per cent, the savings can be huge and the impact to your life can be substantial in two key ways. First your going to save
money in what you pay in interest. The second and most commonly overlooked piece to this is that
you will reduce your overall payments as well. So not only will you be saving money you will free
up more cash which you can use in any number of ways including paying off your mortgage faster.
Do yourself a favour, review your credit card statements. Go back as far as you have to to the first
month when you started carrying a balance over zero. If that was more than three months ago or
your credit card is at its limit, give me a call youll be glad you did.

Clayton has memorable

U16 Challenge Cup
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup is
a memory CFR Bisons rookie rearguard Cole
Clayton will not easily forget.
Team Alberta went undefeated en route
to winning gold last week at the Markin
MacPhail Centre in Calgary.
Clayton was the main shut-down defenseman who played in many situations and credited the teams success to the bonding that
occurred almost instantly.
It was a super tight team that wanted to
win, said Clayton. We were the underdogs
and we went out and proved them wrong.
(My teammates) just made me better on the

ice and you improve so much when youre

with the elite. You just keep getting better
and better.
The 15-year-old noticed there was a difference in pace, but said what made it easier to
settle in was the fact the players were all the
same age.
It was super fast, said Clayton. Theyre
all my age compared to major midget, you
play against guys two years older than you.
Theyre strong as you and you can battle with
them and you have to try and outskate guys.
The biggest thing he learned was attention
to detail, a skill he plans to carry with him
into the rest of the season with the Bisons.
Team Alberta defeated Team Manitoba 3-0
in the gold medal game.

STOCKWELL,
Lorna Alice

After a life well lived, Lorna Alice

Stockwell passed away peacefully
at the Strathmore Hospital Tuesday,
October 27, 2015 at the age of 76. She was born
July 9, 1939 in Vermilion, Alberta. She was predeceased by her husband Tom in 1987 and is survived by her children, Nelson (Rhonda) and Barbara
(Herman); grandchildren, Brienne (Mitch) Chabot,
Erin (Dotan) Stockwell, Alicea (Isaac) Praeker, Tanner (Kimberley) Stockwell, Francis (Jena) Praeker,
Geordie Praeker, Cole (Breanne) Praeker; great
grandchildren, Jack and Alexis Praeker , Reese
and Madison Chabot and Brinley Stockwell and
her Furry Friend, Canuck. Lorna is also survived
by her sisters, Joan Roberge of Lloydminister and
Alva (Harry) Creech of Vermilion as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Lorna was born in Vermilion and raised in the Clandonald area, with the
Allendale School situated in the same yard where
they lived. Lorna and Joans job in the winter was
to head to the school early in the morning and light
the fire in the pot belly stove so it was warm when
the other students arrived. After graduating from
High School Lorna worked as a telephone operator
in Lloydminister and during this time she met Tom
and they were married on July 2, 1957. They operated school buses in the Clandonald area and this
is where Nelson Clifford was born in April 1959.
Shortly after, an opportunity arose to purchase
school buses in the Rockyford area, prompting
the young couple to uproot and settle in their
new community. Barbara Alice was born in May
1961 and from there their busy lives continued,
raising their young family and operating their fleet
of school buses with the greatest of commitment
and care. They came to love Rockyford and area
and were both involved in many activities. When
Tom passed away in Oct 1987, Lorna continued
to operate the business until 1999. At this time
she sold the business to Southland Transportation,
and moved to her retirement home in Strathmore.
Lorna kept busy with a part time job and treasured
travelling the world with Joan, visiting each of the
continents and spending their winters in warmer
climates down south. Lornas greatest joy was
spending time with her children, grandchildren
and great grandchildren, always going above and
beyond and working behind the scenes to support
and attend each activity, sporting event and special moments in their lives. The family would like
to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Manocha
and the wonderful staff at the Strathmore Hospital for such excellent, loving care. Everyone was
exceptionally caring and compassionate towards
Lorna. Funeral Services were held on Saturday,
October 31, 2015 at Hope Community Covenant
Church (245 Brent Blvd Strathmore) at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made in Lornas memory to the Cheadle Lions Hospice Project
(RR1, Site 3, Box 22, Strathmore, AB, T1P 1J6). To
send condolences, please visit Lornas obituary at

BEACOME, Catherine Cathy

May 20, 1927 ~ October 30, 2015

Cathy Beacome passed away at the Willow Creek
Care Center in Claresholm on October 30, 2015
at the age of 83 years. Cathy was predeceased
by the love of her life, Ken, on November 1, 2007.
Born in Carseland, Alberta, she met and married
Ken Beacome on December 15, 1948. They continued working in the Mossleigh area before joining
Kens father, Bob, to work on the family farm. Ken
and Cathy also drove school bus for many years
as a sideline to farming. In 1973, they bought the
family farm located six miles south east of Mossleigh, where Cathy enjoyed vegetable gardening
and tending to the farm animals, all of which she
named with the exception of the chickens. She
was especially passionate about everything to do
with horses including horseback riding. Cathy
could win the life championship of never wearing
shoes to do all her farm chores. A Funeral Service
will be held in the Chapel of Mountain View Funeral
Home (1605 - 100 Street SE, Calgary) on Saturday,
November 7, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service
will follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.
To express condolences,
please visit: www.mountainviewmemorial.ca.

CELEBRATION OF LIGHTS

Thank you seems insufficient to express our

appreciation to the many kind folks who
helped with the October Thrift Sale at the
United Church and who have no direct affiliation with the church.
Our thanks go to Mr. Flaws and the Strathmore High School physical education classes
who cheerfully and ably emptied the large
shed on Monday morning, a huge help to us.
Thanks to our wonderful volunteers from
many local churches as well as those with no
church affiliation. Your community spirit is
most inspiring, and your fellowship and hard
work is a joy to us all.
Finally, thanks to the Crowfoot 4-H Club
members who came on Saturday to help with
packing, loading items, recycling cardboard
and cleaning up. You were a great help to
many very tired U.C. workers!
We live in a wonderful community and the

United Church Women thank you

all and feel very blessed by your support.
