CURRICULAR STATEMENT
Pupil develops an understanding of the concept halogen family through experimentation, observation and
discussion, and develops an ability to use the acquired knowledge in unfamiliar situations.
CONTENT ANALYSIS
TERM
: Halogens
FACTS
CONCEPT: Halogens are the 17th group elements in the periodic table
LEARNING OUTCOME
To enable the pupil to..
recognizing the term halogens and memorizing the same for developing factual
knowledge.
2. explaining characters of halogens for developing conceptual knowledge
3. conducting practical works on the technique of drawing atomic structure of elements for
developing procedural knowledge.
4. validating the process of acquiring knowledge about halogens for developing metacognitive knowledge.
1.
PRE-REQUISITES
Pupils already knows about valency and atomic structure

RIDDLE CARD
1. I am the first member of halogen family. I am in FLAT
not in CAT, in OX not in FAX, in CUP not in CAP, in
RING not in SANG, in MINE not in MILK.
2. I am the second member of this family. I am in CHIP
not in LIP, in LOVE not in FIVE, in RING not in SANG,
in MINE not in MILK
3. I am the third member. I am in BRAIN not in MAIN, in
OX not in FAX, in MILK not in SILK, in ink not in Tank,
in MINE not in MILK.
4. I am the fourth member. I am in LION not in LAN, in
DOG not in FOG, in MINE not in MILK.
5. I am the fifth member. I am in ASK not in DUCK, in
TANK not in PINK, in TIN not in TINY, in EGG not in
FOGG.
CONCEPTS TO BE CONSOLIDATED
The elements of halogen family are Fluorine, Chlorine,
Bromine, Iodine, Astatine
ACTIVITY NO: 2
Teacher give four story card to each group in which some letters
are highlighted. In each card a meaningful sentence is hidden.
Teacher asks students to arrange them and to form a meaningful
sentence.
kept going.
However, the rabbit slept longer than he had thought and
woke up. He could not see the turtle anywhere! He went
at full-speed to the finish line but found the turtle there
waiting for him.
Moral: never underestimate the weakest opponent.
So children you never underestimate other opponents.

The Rabbit and the Turtle
CONCEPTS TO BE CONSOLIDATED
The group number of halogen family is seventeen. All
elements are non metals except astatine. There are
seven valence electrons in the atoms of halogens. So
one is the valency of elements
ACTIVITY NO: 3
Teacher gives thermo coal rings to each group and ask
them to make atomic structure of chlorine, bromine and
fluorine.
GENERALISATION
From the above activities it is understood that halogens
are the seventeenth group elements. The elements of this
group have seven electrons in their outermost shell. So
their valency is 1. All the elements are non metals except
astatine.
