Do you clean well water?

What do you used to clean the water?
What is the main component in this bleaching powder?
In which group this chlorine is included in the periodic table?
What is the criterion behind the arrangement of elements in
groups ?
Teacher starts the lesson by saying that through this class we are
going to discuss about the 17th group elements in the periodic
table
PRESENTATION
Teacher divides the whole students in to four groups, name them
as Mendeleev, Mosley, Newland, Lavosiere and ask them to
perform the following activities.

RIDDLE CARD
1. I am the first member of halogen family. I am in FLAT
not in CAT, in OX not in FAX, in CUP not in CAP, in
RING not in SANG, in MINE not in MILK.
2. I am the second member of this family. I am in CHIP
not in LIP, in LOVE not in FIVE, in RING not in SANG,
in MINE not in MILK
3. I am the third member. I am in BRAIN not in MAIN, in
OX not in FAX, in MILK not in SILK, in ink not in Tank,

FOGG.
CONCEPTS TO BE CONSOLIDATED
The elements of halogen family are Fluorine, Chlorine,
Bromine, Iodine, Astatine
ACTIVITY NO: 2
Teacher give four story card to each group in which some letters
are highlighted. In each card a meaningful sentence is hidden.
Teacher asks students to arrange them and to form a meaningful
sentence.

The Rabbit and the Turtle

One day a rabbit was boasting about how fast he could

run. He was laughing at the turtle for being so slow.
Much to the rabbits surprise, the turtle challenged him
to a race. The rabbit thought this was a good joke and
accepted the challenge. The fox was to be the umpire of
the race. As the race began, the rabbit raced way ahead
of the turtle, just like everyone thought.
The rabbit got to the halfway point and could not see
the turtle anywhere. He was hot and tired and decided to
stop and take a short nap. Even if the turtle passed him,
he would be able to race to the finish line ahead of him.
All this time the turtle kept walking step by step by

step. He never quit no matter how hot or tired he got.

He just kept going.
However, the rabbit slept longer than he had thought
and woke up. He could not see the turtle anywhere! He
went at full-speed to the finish line but found the turtle
there waiting for him.
Moral: never underestimate the weakest opponent

All are non metals but not astatine

So children you never underestimate other opponents.

One is the valency of elements

CONCEPTS TO BE CONSOLIDATED
The group number of halogen family is seventeen. All
elements are non metals except astatine. There are
seven valence electrons in the atoms of halogens. So
one is the valency of elements
ACTIVITY NO: 3
Teacher gives thermo coal rings to each group and ask
them to make atomic structure of chlorine, bromine and
fluorine.

GENERALISATION
From the above activities it is understood that halogens
are the seventeenth group elements. The elements of this
group have seven electrons in their outermost shell. So
their valency is 1. All the elements are non metals except
astatine.

FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES
REVIEW
1. What are the characters of halogens?
2. Name the elements in halogen family?

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY
Draw the atomic structures of iodine and astatine?
