APPLICATION TIPS
Youre probably wondering what we consider while reviewing an application.
We place special emphasis upon your high school transcripts, including rigor
of coursework, grades, class rank (if available), and senior year courses. We also
look at test scores and application essays, in addition to non-academic aspects
of your life, such as extracurricular activities, work and volunteer experience,
and honors and awards received. We review the complete picture of who you
are and how you will contribute to the talented, bright, and diverse student
body at Illinois.
Following is a checklist to help guide you through the application process.
Youll also find some helpful tips on how to fill out the form, as well as
directions for parts of the application that may not be self-explanatory. Go
ahead and check off the steps as you complete them; we dont want you
to overlook an important aspect of the application. If you have additional
questions contact us at admissions@illinois.edu or 217.333.0302.
As an applicant, it is your responsibility to know the application requirements and
to submit the necessary materials.

CHECKLIST
All Applicants

Two ways to apply:

1. Apply online at www.apply.illinois.edu.
Recommended. When you apply online you create an ID and PIN,
which enables you to check your application status after submitting your
application.
2. If you submit a paper application, mail it to:
Office of Undergraduate Admissions
University of Illinois
901 W. Illinois St., Suite 103
Urbana, IL 61801-3445

oo Accurate email address. We send important information via e-mail. Please

submit an address that will be checked frequently and notify the Office of
Undergraduate Admissions if you change it.
oo Major selection. Browse our list of majors and concentrations at www.
admissions.illinois.edu/academics/majors.html. If youre undecided about
a major, you can apply to the Division of General Studies. You may only
apply to one program; however, you will automatically be considered for
other programs, including the Division of General Studies, if you are not
admitted to your first choice.
oo Essays. Two essays of no more than 300 words each are required in the
application (#29 and #30). We want to read about you, what interests you
and why. After the essays are completed, ask a teacher, counselor, or parent
to proofread and provide feedback. Remember, they should not write for
you, but help catch misspellings and give suggestions.
oo List of Activities, Work Experience, Community Service, & Honors/
Awards. List the most important and meaningful experiences youve had
and honors earned during high school for each question.
oo Application Fee. Please submit a nonrefundable $50 application fee ($60
for international applicants), payable to the University of Illinois, or a
completed fee waiver from your high school guidance counselor.
oo Transcripts. If you have already completed at least two years of high school
in the United States or at one of the schools listed at www.admissions.
illinois.edu/apply/tips_internationalschools.html, request that your high
school send an official transcript(s) directly to the Office of Undergraduate
Admissions. Transcripts must be issued from the high school in which you
completed junior year and include a listing of all high school courses and
grades. To qualify for Priority Admission, transcripts must be postmarked
by November 1. For Regular Admission, transcripts must be received by
January 12.
If you have already completed at least two years of high school outside
of the United States and your high school does not appear on the list at
www.admissions.illinois.edu/apply/tips_internationalschools.html, you
will need to submit a self-reported academic record. This online form and
detailed instructions will be available on September 1. Do NOT send any
supporting documentation until you receive instructions from our office
regarding required academic credentials. To qualify for Priority Admission,
self-reported academic records must be submitted by November 1. For
Regular Admission, they must be submitted by January 12.
oo Official test scores. Standardized test scores are required for admission
review: either ACT (code 1154) or SAT 1 (code 1836) scores are accepted.
The writing component of the ACT is required for at least one sitting. To
qualify for Priority Admission, test scores must be received by November 1.
For Regular Admission, they must be received by January 12. Official test
scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. Scores posted on high
school transcripts and copies of student score reports will not be accepted.
oo Unsolicited information. Please do not send unsolicited
information such as letters of recommendation. That
documentation will NOT be added to your file.

oo Submitting the Completed Application. Students need to sign and date

the paper application and submit it with all required materials. For an
online application, the submission acts as the signature.
oo Checking the status of your application. Once you receive
acknowledgement of receipt from us, you should check the status of your
application at www.admissions.illinois.edu/apply/check_status.html. Please
allow several days for us to match your academic records with your application.
oo Honors Programs. Your Undergraduate Application for Admission is the
same application used for admission into all campus honors programs.
Admission into honors programs is determined by a combination of GPA,
test scores, rigor of coursework, and strength of essays. If youre interested
in being accepted to an honors program, the best way to approach the
application is with care and attention to detail. Priority for honors programs
may be given to applicants who apply during the Priority Filing Period. If
youre selected to an honors program, youll receive notification directly
from the program by April 1. Read more about honors at www.admissions.
illinois.edu/academics/honors.html.
oo Merit-Based Scholarships. Your Undergraduate Application for Admission
is the same application used for all merit-based scholarships. You will
automatically be considered for scholarships when you apply. Priority for
scholarships may be given to applicants who apply during the Priority
Filing Period. Our scholarships are granted to students based on academic
achievement and are awarded by individual colleges and departments. If
youre awarded a scholarship, youll receive notification directly from the
department by April. Read more about scholarships at www.admissions.
illinois.edu/cost/scholarships.html.
oo Need-Based Aid. For consideration of need-based aid, the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed.
Our priority date to apply for need-based aid is March 15. For more
information, please visit the Office of Student Financial Aid at www.
osfa.illinois.edu. The Federal School Code for Illinois is 001775.

one of those majors, you will select your concentration once you begin your studies.

OTHER information
Social Security Number Disclosure
Your Social Security Number (SSN) is requested pursuant to Public Law 93579 for the Universitys system of student records, as well as for compliance
with federal and state reporting requirements. An SSN is required if you are
applying for financial aid but is not required for admission to the University.
Providing an SSN will, however, speed up the processing of your application
since we will not need to manually match your application with other materials
such as transcripts and test scores. Supplying an SSN ensures that you will
be able to claim the Hope Tax Credit, if you are eligible, on your federal tax
return. The University has a strong commitment to ensuring the privacy and
confidentiality of student records and will not disclose your SSN without your
consent for any purpose except as allowed by law.

high school graduation requirements

To enroll, you must have a high school diploma or GED certification, and
meet requirements for competence in English. If high school graduation was by
GED, you must have an official report of your GED test scores sent from the
testing agency.

Criminal record Disclosure

The University of Illinois is committed to maintaining a safe environment
for all members of the University community. As part of this commitment,
the University requires applicants with pending criminal charges or criminal
convictions (other than a minor traffic offense or in a juvenile proceeding) to
disclose this information as a mandatory step in the admissions process. A
pending criminal charge or criminal conviction does not automatically bar
admission to the University, but does require review. Complete information
must be sent by certified mail at the time of application for admission to:
Review Committee
300 Student Services Building
University of Illinois
610 E. John St.
Champaign, IL 61820
It is strongly recommended that applicants send materials by certified mail.
Applicants are responsible for verifying receipt by the University and for
maintaining a copy of the receipt certifying submission. Information to be
submitted, in English, includes a brief explanation of the incident, location
(city, county, state, country) of conviction or pending charges, dates, and court
disposition. The applicant must forward the charging document, case docket,
and judgment order or other disposition paperwork available. The applicant
must also include a grant of permission to the University for complete access to
criminal records, if any. Applicants may be required to sign additional releases.
For further information on this requirement, call 217.333.0050.
