STAGES FOR PARTIAL DENTURE CONSTRUCTION

CLINIC

History and examination

Take primary impressions (clinical tutor signs labcard to request rims and special
trays)
LAB

Cast primary impressions in 1st floor lab (student) to make study casts. Send
study casts to outside lab for special trays and wax occlusal rims (lab tutor cosigns labcard before sending to outside lab)

CLINIC
Jaw registration (using wax occlusal rims and facebow) (clinical tutor signs
labcard asking for casts to be articulated by you)
LAB

Articulate study casts (student)

Survey casts, analyse occlusion and design denture in lab (meet clinical tutor
before see patient if possible to confirm design and plan toothpreps) .Design must
be properly drawn out on design sheet in notes and signed by clinician before
proceeding with toothpreps. (Lab tutor co-signs labcard to approve your labwork
before going back to clinic )

CLINIC

Discuss/agree design with patient

[Note: sometimes if upper anterior teeth missing, an anterior tooth try-in is

carried out here to ensure design allows optimum appearance and function of
those anterior denture teeth, and that framework is of correct shape to attach
denture teeth and any metal backings are also correctly shaped].
Modify natural teeth (toothpreps)
Master impression(s) (Clinical tutor check denture design and sign labcard to
request framework if needed)
LAB

Cast master impression(s) (student)

Send to outside lab to have cobalt chrome framework made (if there is to be one)
(Lab tutor co-signs labcard before sending off)

CLINIC
Try in cobalt chrome framework (if there is one) (Clinical tutor sign labcard
to ask for rims)
LAB Make new wax occlusal rims so can articulate master cast(s), [and where
there is a framework, make the rim on this]. (If its just rims without framework
then send to outside lab, but if framework you usually do it yourself as it doesnt
take long). (Lab tutor co-signs labcard before sending off)
CLINIC
New jaw registration to articulate casts, and tooth shade (these casts will
be master casts in arches where dentures being made and study casts where no
dentures being made). (Clinical tutor sign labcard asking for tooth set-up)
LAB

Articulate master casts and set denture teeth in 1 st floor lab (student) (Lab tutor
signs labcard after checking tooth set-up fit to take back onto clinic)

CLINIC
Denture try-in (framework with denture teeth) and make corrections by the
chairside as necessary. (May also need to go back to the lab to finish changes,
and then call patient back for another try-in). (Clinical tutor signs labcard asking
either for re-try or flask, pack and finish depending on whats needed next)
LAB

When all teeth are where you want them, wax up the final try-in (student) and
send to outside lab for flask, pack and finish (FPF). (Lab tutor checks wax-up and
signs labcard before sending off for FPF)

CLINIC
Fit finished denture(s) and give partial denture instruction sheet from folder
on 1st floor (ask nurses). Keep labcard in notes for future reference (Medical
Devices Directive legislation requires this so information available at a later date if
there is a query about how a denture was made).
CLINIC
Review patient after short time (one to two weeks if poss) and then again
as necessary. We often recommend a final review after a few months just to check
all is fine before discharging patient.

Other reminders:
1. Always have labcard with you on clinic for clinical tutor to help you request
labwork (even if you will be doing it yourself). The clinical tutor needs to sign the
request before you finish the clinical session.

2. Always disinfect labwork at beginning and end of clinical sessions (and that
includes the casts that have been contaminated by labwork in contact with them).
