To Do my MBA, I accepted my position gat Mckinsey while I wa applying for the MBA. If I had
not received the offer from Wisconson , I ight have not done my MBA this year and might
have looked at doing next year.
I was in a fix, because at one hand I had a great opportunity at Mckinsey and on the other, a
great offer for the MBA.
But, I accepted the offer, as I have good contacts in India, and there are always opportunity
for me there.MBA would equip me with the skills to become a leader.
Based on the time we had for the project, we first laid out a roadmap, estimate of number of das for each
phase of our presentation,
-Initial screening, understanding and laying out questions 20%

First time I was given the responsibility to manage a team dn lead the project, was definitely challenging
yet very motivating for me.
I already knew the team members, so famiiriat was not an issue.
But I first spent a lot of time understanding the project and things to deliver.
With the team , identified things need to complete and delegated the responsibilitis.
I made extra effort and always gave before time, what I had to deliver.
This heped develop a good impression with my team members, alwas had a ver open way of
communicating with people, spent some time outside office to help build team.
Initially there was a problem when some one blamed he or she had to do, then I wrote down all the tasks
and emailed Clear respobilities were delegated and emailed to everyone, so that there was no overlap or
confusion. In the end i was successful incomplting the project withought any defects and also showed that
I can lead projects , this also helped me grab an opportunity to work in Seattle, USA for one of our clients.

project or achieve your objectives.
Once I was training some one about an auditing task, the person initially though took a lot of time but was
unable to get up to speed as per the expectations. I realized that the person was having trouble, so I
decided the spend some time on a daily basis with the person to help him understand the task and
complete th process, in the end although he took time to get up tp speed but he got a good crasp of the
concepts and was very efficient in his work from that day on.
Situation: ICA team, people from different nationalities, having different styles of work
People were not submitting work on time, coming late to meetings, being to aggressive, some being too
passive.
We set few norms around Whats acceptable
Accountability- warnings then report in the feedback form
Also, identified that everyone was not good in everything, so we gave work based on strengths
If some one was not listening, tod them to cool down and be more open to other peoples ideas.
Spent an hour everyday with each other for work or met during lunch to better understand each other
This really helped the team and we started gelling well together, and work productively and efficiently

During mckinsey, one of the projects I was working on, the manager used to change the
requirements and goals of the project very frequently.
Example: turn around analysis, example, do annual analysis, then cance and do quarterly
analysis, then changed it semi annual and then back to annual
The main prolem was that the manager did not spend enough time with us in scoping the
problem. As per aour analysis we beeie it would be good to look at annual change, rather than
other periods, but the manager would just email and not spend time with us on email or meetings
to discuss much about the project. We ended up making a lot of changes to our formulas and
sheets in the end to come up with soething that was acceptable to the manager, all would have
been easier if he had done proper problem solving and given time to discuss and analyze the
problem, instead of trying out different scenarios without a basis.
Learning: I was unhappy about the time and effort that went waste into the project, which could
have been utilized somewhere else . But taught me an important lesson to problem solve, scope
the problem before analysis. There might be certain changes made as you discover few results
but randomly throwing out analysis ends up wasting time and money for the organization

disrupted. (What caused you the most difficulty and why?)
a) There are many times when you are working on something , and your work can be disrupted by
phone calls, colleagues , making noise or people coming to you for help or advice.
b) Example: I was working on a deliverable for a Partner at MCkinsey and had to deliver s
spreadsheet and 1-2 page powerpoint analysis . I was running on very tight deadline and needed
to focus as much as I could to complete the work, but there were there people who were excited
about a party their team had that day and were discussing and making lot of noises,
My best bet is to ask the people to steop the converstaions, if its the phone, then put the phone
on silent , put busy on communicator, but first is to always go to a break ut room I such situations
to give stay away and focus on the work. If no room is available then I will ask people that I am
working on a tight deadline and please cooperate and remain calm.

It was something that was not asked from me, but I realized this had the potential to increase efficiency

I the time I sepnt with each person during my business training, I took notes and spent 2 hours every day,
on making the document and slides. After 3 weeks, I was able to come up with document and ppt slides
explaining the whole business process.
This was circulated to embers within the team, initially it helped people in the team gain knowledge,
reduced time spent
The documents helped reduce 30 minutes for each person every week, and also reduced the training
time from 3 weeks to 1 and half weeks for any new Joinee.

Once I receive an email from a Em, to do a short analysis on something I had worked for him in the past
for. It was nearly time for me to go home and pretty late at night,
I understood from him that it was pvery urgent and required for a client meeting the next day.
After scoping the proble I realized that this was another 4-5 hours of analysis.
I was newly married and was important to spend more time at home, but t that time I realized the
consequences for the manager if this analysis was not done, and hence I decided to give it a shot and
compelte it that day.
I worked on it for around 4 hours til 3 in the night and completed the analysis and send it that night
I was appreciated by the manager for not only complting the work but also giving valuable insights into
the project.
If something has to be done, it has to be done and you should try to flexible and open to work and
projects.

As a business consultant- I was working with users, developers , testers of the system and hence
corordination and communication was important
Some times in new teams it was tough to work with developers were coordinating enough, in terms of
what work would I do and work would they be doing, I wa a business guy and not a tehnology guy, but
they expected me to learn programming and review codes for them or make changes with codes nstead
of chaning requireents which will tak their time.
So it was tough trying to make them understand my role and boundaries as a businessc consultant.
-they might not agree with the user and might say that it is not acceptable, so it as tough to get
corordination from them at times.
And also offered to learn the language as uch as I can so that I could review certain pieces of codes,
So I was flexible enough to accommodate few of their needs, but also made them understand through
talking and explaining them my strengths , that these are the things I am supposed to work on.

1)My interest in Finance and how to value projects and companies, learned different ways,
techniques such as DCF, LBO, M&A , NPV, Option valuation for Patents.
2)Learning through case studies gives you an idea about how to apply these techniques in the
real world.
3)For example, one instance learned about Patent valuation methodology and then applied the
same to my internship. This not only helped us identify the value of the patent to WARF but
and helped drive a strategy for the company but it also helped act as a framework for all future
projects to identify the value those patents can bring to the company.
One case we did was with merck, where we had to identify the potential value of the license to a
drug inventor when that the company was licensing the product to Merck because of its
knowledge and expertise in getting a drug through the FDA and then also commercializing the
product. Calculated the NPV to both Merck and the drug maker to recommend if we should go
ahead with the deal.
2) what are the important questions we should ask to solve a business problem. For example,
when looking at new businesses it is important to analyze which part of the value chain

Challenges
Mckinsey has a very steep learning curve so initial 4-5 months were challenging as I
had to develop ad advanced skills in excel and powerpoint and work on creating
models and presentataions thatwould be used by partners of the firm. Had to spend
a lot of time out of normal hours to gain such skills, go through training programs,
enroll on my own and continously keep improving . Working with senior people such
as Partners and directors of the company was also challenging as you wok on a lot
of ambiguous projects with such high people. As they normally do not have a lot of
time to wok with you and will give you limited information to help solve th ings for
them. You need to understand the big picture, put yourself in their shoes , consult
people who have experience of working on such projects and with such people, then
present the analysis and list out your assumptions carefully. Also do more analysis if
required that might be helpful for the person. Example, if someone is looking for
industry analysis just top level, because they are looking for growth strategies, then
do a more detailed analysis and give a recommendation from your side.

Working in Corporate Finance means working for a corporation or company to help it raise money to
