Contexts of Quality Arts Education


What is the purpose and practice of quality arts education?
October 16th-18th, 2014, UTC University Center

The Fall Arts & Education Forum at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga convenes
educators, administrators, and practitioners who are passionate about increasing access to quality
arts education in our schools. The Forum provides an intimate venue for up to 50 participants to
engage in interactive sessions and robust conversations around the following question: what is
the purpose and practice of quality arts education? Facilitated by arts education experts including
SCEAs nationally recognized team, Forum activities provide opportunities for participants to
network, brainstorm ideas, and develop practical strategies for strengthening arts rich curriculum
and instruction in the communities they serve.

Student Art Exhibit

At this years forum, well be hosting an exhibit of K-12 student art from the Chattanooga area.
The exhibit will be open in the Tennessee Room at the University Center on the campus of the
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for forum attendees each day and for the public on
Saturday, October 18th from 12:00pm 4:00pm.

Thursday, October 16th


6:00pm-8:00pm- Forum Kick-Off at Barger Academy of Fine Arts
Barger Academy of Fine Arts, 4808 Brainerd Rd, Chattanooga, TN 37411
Come see how Barger Academy of Fine Arts is increasing awareness about the value of arts learning in
their community. CommunCREATE is an after school program where Barger Academy students engage in
arts learning experiences with their families. This program aims to break barriers to parental involvement
while building a deeper understanding of artistic literacy. Forum participants are invited to participate in
CommuniCREATE and experience the event within a school setting alongside the Barger Academy
community. A toolkit of resources will be shared so that Forum participants can bring CommuniCREATE
to their community. Light refreshments will be served.

Friday, October 17th


8:30am-9:00am- Coffee and Introduction: What are the characteristics of quality arts education?

Presented by Joel Baxley, SCEA Director of Visual Art Education; Laurie Melnik, SCEA Interim Director.
What does quality arts education look like in the communities we serve? This interactive session will
highlight findings from a recent study conducted in partnership between the Southeast Center for Education
in the Arts and South Arts. Participants will consider characteristics of quality arts education in their own
context. These characteristics will serve as key strands of inquiry for this years Arts & Education Forum
and include: shared vision and mission, relationships, and arts as core curriculum.

Van Valkenburg, Director of Grants and Initiatives, ArtsBuild; Temple Glascock, Co-President of
ReGenerate, Signal Mountain High School, Jessica Tolbert, Co-President of ReGenerate, Chattanooga School
for the Arts and Sciences.
This all conference session will provide an overview of how developing a shared vision and mission in arts
education helps schools and communities achieve their goals. Specific attention will be placed on important
stakeholders to include in the process. Participants will leave this all conference session with a process they
can implement and adapt in their community and strategies for stakeholder engagement. This session will
be live-streamed and video recorded.

New Beginnings: Creating an Arts Education Task Force from the Ground Up. UTC University Center,
Chattanooga A. Presented by Allen Bell, Arts Education Manager, Georgia Department of Economic

This session will take participants through the process of creating an arts education task force. Participants will
learn about important stakeholders to include in the process for developing a shared mission and vision in arts
education.

Luck or Design? Chattanooga's Imagine! Initiative.

Presented by Rodney Van Valkenburg, Director of Grants and Initiatives, ArtsBuild.
ArtsBuild's Imagine! initiative is attempting to design a systemic approach to arts exposure for all elementary
school students in Chattanooga, TN. This session will explore the journey of this initiative and share how
exposure activities can be a catalyst to support arts learning, arts integration, and arts advocacy efforts.

Presented by Dr. Susanne Burgess, SCEA Director of Music Education, Project Director- Literacy, the Arts,
and the Common Core, Jessica LaLiberte-Bowman, Dance Educator, Center for Creative Arts; Sandra
Howard, Literacy Educator, Center for Creative Arts.
This all conference session will focus on how to cultivate collaboration among faculty, with students, and
within your surrounding community. Participants will leave this session with a deeper understanding of
relationships that can help support and strengthen quality arts education in the community they serve.

Walk in My Shoes: Developing Quality Arts Education Experiences in the Community.

Presented by Tenika Dye, Artistic Director, The Salvation Army's ReCreate Caf.
Community-based arts experiences require careful consideration of program goals and outcomes. This session
will guide participants through the Walk in My Shoes project at ReCreate Caf. Participants will learn about
the process behind this project before seeing the performance later the same evening.
CommuniCREATE: Cultivating Parent Understanding of Arts Teaching and Learning.

Presented by Amy Burton, Drama Specialist, Barger Academy of Fine Arts; Michael Jerome Mitchell
Jr., Music Specialist; Barger Academy of Fine Arts; Felicion McMillon-Diakhate, Dance Specialist,
Barger Academy of Fine Arts, Emily Ann Simpson, Visual Art Specialist, Barger Academy of Fine Arts;
Laurie Melnik, Interim SCEA Director.
This session provides an opportunity for Forum participants to learn more about CommuniCREATE: an after
school program for students to engage in arts learning experiences with their families. Barger Academy Fine
Arts Specialists will highlight how this program helped them build relationships with parents while
cultivating artistic literacy understanding across music, drama, visual art, and dance.

2014 Fall Arts & Education Forum Overview



This closing session will highlight current trends and future directions in arts education. Participants will
have an opportunity to reflect on ideas cultivated throughout the day as well as fine tune action steps in
moving forward. Participants will walk away with a place to start or a new direction to consider on their
quest to increase access and the quality of arts education in their schools and communities.

7:30pm- ReCreate Cafs performance of Walk in My Shoes
Salvation Army, ReCreate Caf, 800 McCallie Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37403
Walk in My Shoes is an original performance developed and facilitated by The Salvation Army's ReCreate
Caf Artistic Director, Tenika Dye. Walk in My Shoes highlights real stories shared and performed from
Chattanoogas homeless and non-homeless citizens. Each performer will tell someone elses story rather
than their own. The concept is that someone who is homeless or who has been tells the story of someone
who has never been homeless and vice versa. Therefore, all the performers are walking in someone elses
shoes. Due to the mature content of the material this performance is recommended for those 13 and older
with teens being accompanied by an adult. Walk in My Shoes is a 90-minute performance without an
intermission.

9:30am-12:30pm- All Conference Session: Arts as Core Curriculum

Presented by Jim Palmarini, Director of Educational Policy, Educational Theatre Association.
How would our education contexts differ if everyone viewed and described arts education as core
curriculum? Participants will unpack the new Core Arts Standards and begin designing assessments that
target specific learning outcomes in the arts. The session will end with a guided reflection that helps
participants develop practical strategies in moving forward.
