Describe the principles of the modes of failure known as

ductile/brittle fracture, fatigue and creep
Perform and record the results of one destructive and one
non
destructive test method using one metal and one nonmetallic material
Describe a different process of degradation associated with
each of
metals, polymers and ceramics
Student has explain how destructive and non-destructive test
procedure
produces useful results
Student has explained how degradation processes affect the
behaviour of engineering materials and how to prevent
materials from degradation
Student has evaluated the test results and has differentiate
between the properties of materials using the given test
result

Task 1
Pasan is working as a research assistant in ITI (Industrial Technology Institute). The main function of
the institute to carry out the material tests for the samples sends by the various companies. The
institute is also looking forward to introduce new vehicles to the market (P7, M2, and D2)

What is meant by destructive and non-destructive tests

Explain the theories and procedures for selected two destructive and two non-destructive tests.
Why it is important to carry out material tests
The following shows the test results for tensile test carried out by pasan. Calculate modulus of
elasticity for a material, given data
Applied Load 8.9 kN, Cross-sectional diameter 7mm,Gauge length 35mm,Extension 0.5mm

Strain

1.5 Figure 2.1 shows the Stress strain curves for four different polymeric materials. Describe the
properties of each material.
Task 2
Materials fail in many ways. Failure is normally considered to occur when the component/structure.
Product is no longer fit for its intended purpose. This may be because the material has parted
and failure by breakage has many aspects. Failure might also occur because the material has

deformed without breaking. The failure might be due to wear and degradation so that that the
component will no longer function.
Ex: When a piece of iron material exposed to rain for a long time a brown colored powder can be
observed on the surfaces. If a concrete roof is exposed to rain for long time water comes inside. (P 6,
P8, M3)
2.1 Name and explain the four failure modes of engineering materials.
2.2 Describe the different types of degradation process associated with Metals, Ceramics and
polymers while
2.3 Describe the reason to observe the brown color powder on the surface of iron materials
2.4 Describe the prevention methods for iron materials
