LIFE, A Gift From God

John Payne

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath
of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7)

We live in a world surrounded by death and dying, so much so that sometimes we forget that
life is a gift from God. Physical life and spiritual life, the gift of new life as in a little baby as well as the
new birth through which we enter the Kingdom of God. It all began in the Garden when God literally
breathed into Adam’s nostrils and he became a living soul. Adam had already been created from the
dust of the earth and was awaiting God’s touch, that Almighty powerful “jump start” if you will, that
which would animate him and all those that
would follow until this very day. You and I have
that same breath of life passed on to us,
generation upon generation, until one day when
He returns to judge this earth and make all
things new.
Speaking then of life, there is a battle
raging around us, “When does life begin?” For
me that answer is a simple one. It begins at
conception. When that tiny sperm impregnates
that little egg the miracle of life has begun. I
firmly believe this. As a little child would say,
“The Bible tells me so.” It has been one
continuous and ongoing life since God created
Adam in the Garden. That life has remained
unbroken and it indeed continues.
It is not so for many, many millions of others. They treat this little gift from God as a by
product of a night out on the town, a one night stand, a product of lust, fornication or adultery,
something (or “somebody”) they cannot afford, another unwanted mouth to feed or find some other
excuse for “it”. This “it” is a person within which is a soul just as surely as you and I have a soul. Man
has lost sight of the fact that we are souls encased in a body of flesh temporarily living here on earth.
This soul lives on for eternity after this body of flesh falls off in death.
We are awash in a society that seeks to prevent
pregnancy and should that “accident” happen we have
remedies, the morning after pill or “Plan B” as it is
sometimes called and abortion. Sexual intercourse has
been so long separated from God’s original plan and
intent for man that he sees it primarily as a form of
pleasure and recreation only. Abortion, for many, has
become simply another manner of birth control and is
used freely with seldom any thought or regret.
Statistically speaking, the number of aborted
children is staggering. Since being made legal here in the
United States in 1973, it is estimated that there have been
over 50 million abortions. You and I and all men know deep within our being that to kill is wrong.
But, for convenience sake, millions turn and look the other way as these (continued on page three)

children, gifts from God, are cruelly destroyed. The Bible says, “Thou shalt not kill.” The architecture
of the United States Supreme Court building in Washington, D. C., plainly shows at the center of the
sculpture over the east portico there is the image of Moses holding the two tablets of the Ten
Commandments. These Ten Commandments are also engraved over the chair of the Chief Justice
and on the bronze doors of the Supreme Court. Yet it is this very Court that in 1973 opened the
floodgate for the murder of these unborn children. To
destroy a child through the act of abortion is killing
someone, a child, created in the image of God, created by
God
God has revealed to us in His Word that He knew
us before we were conceived and that it was He Himself
Who formed us from that very moment of conception!
The Bible says, “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou
hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise
thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth
right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I
was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest
parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet
being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were
written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as
yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:13-16) When
the Word of the Lord came unto the Prophet Jeremiah, He said, “Before I formed thee in the belly I
knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee . . . ”. (Jeremiah 1:5) It is
God Who plants and forms the new life in the womb, were it not for Him there would be no life. All
life owes its existence to Him as Creator and Sustainer.
How can any man stand against God and choose
to deny the Truth as revealed in His Word? The answer
is simple. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans tells us plainly,
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against
all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold
the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may
be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath
shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him
from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being
understood by the things that are made, even his
eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without
excuse: because that, when they knew God, they
glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but
became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish
heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise,
they became fools.” (Romans 1:18-22) We live in times
when the Word of God is given little heed or regard, even within many so-called churches.
While on the campaign trail running as a candidate for President of the United States, at a
town hall meeting in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on a Saturday afternoon, (continued on page four)

LIFE, A Gift From God (continued from page three)

Barack Obama told the assembled crowd that he didn't want his daughters, "punished with a baby."
Here are his remarks, in context, so you don’t think I am making something out of nothing. “When it
comes specifically to HIV/AIDS, the most important prevention is education, which should include --
which should include abstinence education and teaching the children -- teaching children, you know,
that sex is not something casual. But it should also include -- it should also include other, you know,

information about contraception because, look, I've got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old. I
am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want
them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at the age of 16. You know, so it
doesn't make sense to not give them information.” Here is a man running for the office of leader of
the free world, one of the most powerful and important political and worldly offices on the face of the
earth. He was speaking off the cuff and without prepared notes and many times, as a campaigner, you
speak things, looking back, you wish you had not said. But to say he did not (continued on page five)

want his own children punished with a baby? This speaks volumes about how he and much of our
society looks at children today!
Later on in the campaign, when speaking on abortion, he mentioned his daughters again and
referred to them as “miracles”. Here is his comment, “This is a very difficult issue, and I understand
sort of the passions on both sides of the issue. I have two precious daughters - they are miracles.”
How can a child be both a punishment and a miracle? Without an intimate relationship with God
through His Son, Jesus the Christ, and
being somewhat conversant with His Word,
you will never know the Truth on such an
important matter as this. Obviously this
man who is now the President still has no
clue as to what God says about children,
about this precious gift of life.
Abortion is murder, plain and
simple, there is no way of getting around it.
Unless, of course, you deny God, you deny
His Word, you deny the salvation that He
has provided for you. It is a sin like all other
sins, sins that can be forgiven. One must
acknowledge and confess that abortion is
indeed a sin and then repent, that is to turn
away from it, having nothing further to ever
do with it again. Then humbly approach
God for forgiveness.
But, for those who do not know God in the pardon of their sins, abortion is simply one more sin
added to the stack that will be revealed against them on the day they stand before Him as Judge. This
is why “they” can so easily go on and on and on with this destruction of life. They have no knowledge
of God.
Doctors today who participate in abortion are an abhorrence to their Hippocratic Oath wherein
it states, “I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to
this effect. Similarly, I will not give a woman an abortive remedy.” Whatever happened to the
injunction, “Physician, do no harm?” It is one of the prime facets of medical ethics. Ah, ethics and
morals, in a world where ethics and morals have been slowly
but inevitably slipping away. Most medical schools have done
away with the Oath or have modified it to make it politically
correct.
The Bible says, “Lo, children are an heritage of the
LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows
are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the
youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them:
they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the
enemies in the gate.” (Psalm 127:3-5) The Bible clearly tells
us that children belong to God and are an inheritance to us
from Him. We are to treat them all as such, with the greatest of love and care. Jesus likens our way
unto Him as these little children who are loving, trusting and have such simple (continued on page six)

faith. Jesus says, “Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye
shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little
child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
And whoso shall receive one such little child in my
name receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of
these little ones which believe in me, it were better for
him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and
that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.”
(Matthew 18:3-6) Along with these gifts from God
comes great responsibility. The Bible says, “Train up a
child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he
will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6) Were you to
read the Bible from cover to cover you would truly
understand how precious is this gift of life and the
responsibilities that you and I have towards children
and the yet unborn.
When you take a stand that is Pro-Choice, you
are not choosing life because the Pro-Choice
movement is simply a politically correct way of saying
you are Pro-Abortion. When was the last time you
heard someone within the Pro-Choice movement stand
up for and herald the choice for life? Herald the cause of the child in the womb? What gives you or
anybody the right to take a life? Any life, especially one in the womb over which you had the choice to
participate in creating through a sexual union? It is amazing how we treat as criminals those who kill
or injure animals but do nothing to those who kill
and destroy innocent children! Some
organizations and doctors are even considered
heroes for conducting abortions! This shows how
far we as a nation, a people, have come and how far
from God we have wandered. The Bible says,
“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a
reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34)
I exhort you to take seriously God’s
expression of life, both physical and spiritual and
take a stand to preserve it in yours and others lives.
Become involved where possible and support Pro-
Life organizations that are Christian in nature so
that they can help save both innocent lives as well
as souls. I would like to highly recommend one to
Rev. Philip “Flip” Benham and myself during one of his visits to a local
Operation Save America Chapter here in Connecticut. you here. You might want to investigate them, see
where they stand and offer your support, in prayer,
financially and in-person to assist in their work. I wholeheartedly encourage it.

Ceasing from Sin

John Payne

“Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for
he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the
flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.” (I Peter 4:1-2)

“If so be that ye have heard Him, and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that ye put off
concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be
renewed in the spirit of your mind.” (Ephesians 4:21-23)

Are you kidding me? Out of your mind? You say that I am expected to stop
sinning? Impossible! Well, that’s what the Bible, God’s Holy and Infallible Word,
says we are to do. I was somewhat viciously attacked by a well meaning Christian the
other day for pointing out a celebrity who has claimed to be a Christian for many,
many years but lives his life using filthy conversation, sexual jokes and sells CD’s
and DVD’s of this sort of humor even though he now says he is straightening up his
life. He claims to have been saved, living as a Christian during all this time. The
Bible teaches otherwise.
If you read the Word of God you will plainly see that scripture teaches we are
supposed to stop sinning and cease living in the manner we used to prior to confessing
Christ as Lord and Savior. Let me share some passages with you as hopefully you will agree.
The Bible says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly
furnished unto all good works.” (II Timothy 3:16-17) It is important to know and understand that the Word of
God is here to plainly demonstrate and instruct us in Christian living. And, YES, you can stop continuing in the
sin you were living in when you came to know Jesus Christ in the pardon of your sins.
The Bible plainly says, “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and
declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we
have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: but if we
walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the
blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no
sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is
faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and
his word is not in us.” (I John 1:5-10) Yes, we will stumble and fall into a sin
occasionally. Verse 9 here explains to us how we get forgiven for these sins,
but, we will not, must not, continue to practice sin if He has indeed come to
dwell within us. ‘Walking’ in darkness implies living in an ongoing manner of
sinfulness, knowingly doing so.
The Bible says further, “And hereby we do know that we know Him, if
we keep His commandments. He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His
commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth His word,
in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in Him. He
that saith he abideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.” (I
John 2:3-6) Willful and continued obedience to Him is a key to overcoming sin and
walking blamelessly before Him. Did Jesus not say, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”? (John 14:15)
Obedience is a requirement of discipleship and remaining in fellowship with Jesus. The Bible says, “And we
are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.”
(Acts 5:32) So many pastors and teachers leave out or do not preach on the (continued on page eight)

Ceasing from Sin (continued from page seven)

requirement of obedience! Jesus sets the standard of discipleship, sets the standard of access to Heaven, sets
the standard for the continued presence in ones life of the presence of the Holy Spirit.
The Bible says, “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of
the law. And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin. Whosoever
abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him. Little children, let no
man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is
righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the
beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might
destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin;
for His seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In
this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever
doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.” (I
John 3:4-10) English is not a very expressive language today. The “eth” endings
in my Bible, which were used in English for hundreds of years, indicate an ongoing
and continuing action. You will not get that understanding the way we speak and
write English today. When the passage uses the words “sinneth”, “continueth” and
“committeth”, He indicates to us that this sin is an ongoing practice, one that is planned, premeditated and
unrepented of. Where the passage uses “doeth righteouness” He is telling us that it is an ongoing and
continuing action on the part of the believer, not something that happened once, twice or only occasionally.
This tells us we are supposed to live right, live in obedience before God, imitating and following the example of
our Savior and Deliverer, Jesus the Christ. This is not difficult to understand if your heart is towards Christ
and is open to the things of God, desiring to please Him in all you do.
One term that John used to describe this relationship is ‘dwelleth’. He wrote, “Whosoever shall confess
that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.” (I John 4:15) No indwelling of Jesus by the
Holy Spirit and there is no ongoing relationship. Your initial confessing is good, but it must continue and is
proved by the fruit which you bear in the day by day living of your life. We must be, “ . . . doers of the word,
and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (James 1:22) For so many people they believe that their
one time confession with their lips and one time mental ascent that Jesus Christ is Lord and that He rose from
the dead is enough. It is not. Nothing could be further from
the Truth! If you think for one moment that God will
receive you and accept you simply because you ran a few
words off your lips as you would recite a recipe for fudge
brownies or a child’s poem you have completely missed the
purpose and intent of the scriptures, the plan and reason for
Jesus’ life, death and resurrection! The Bible says, “That if
thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the
dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man
believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10)
Brethren, this means far more than babbling off a few words
and expecting to find something exciting happen to you as
you would when you open up a box of Cracker Jack and find
the little prize at the bottom of the box. This is not like
Dorothy clicking her heals at the end of the Wizard of Oz and saying the words, “There’s no place like home”,
and finding herself back with loved ones. It just isn’t like that. People have been led to believe a lie from the
teachers and preachers in their churches! God requires holiness, holy living, a deep belief in ones heart that
will eternally change the way you live, both inside and out. People will sit up and take notice! You will confess
with your mouth to others of this great change and you will gladly tell them that (continued on page nine)

Ceasing from Sin (continued from page eight)

Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, that you were dead and dying in sin and that now you are on the road to
Heaven and that they too can come if they receive this very same Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. People will
take notice of the change in your lifestyle, the change in behavior . . . the things you did you don’t do any
more!
You will not be alone in this effort, the Holy Spirit will empower you. You cannot do this, live this new
life testimony before men if you are still living in the same sin you have always lived in. That is why you will
gladly give up your past sin and move on! This
power to overcome what went before and live
the new life, free from sin, is the same power
that raised Jesus from the tomb on
Resurrection Day. The Bible says, “But if the
Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the
dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ
from the dead shall also quicken your mortal
bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”
(Romans 8:11) The word ‘quicken’ here means
to give life or to empower.
The Bible says, “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth
Him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God,
when we love God, and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His
commandments: and His commandments are not grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the
world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the
world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” (I John 5:1-5) On Resurrection Day when Jesus the
Messiah exited the tomb, He proved complete and absolute victory over Sin, Satan and Death, our mortal
enemies here in this life. If you believe that Jesus Christ IS indeed the Son of God you WILL live your life in
conformity to His will. And that does NOT include living in willful, premeditated and unrepentant sin. Jesus
Himself empowers us with His Spirit to overcome sin and our old nature which we supposedly crucified with
Him when we surrendered our will and our life to Him. Have you yet done that, entering into the New
Covenant with Him, becoming also a son of God?
The Bible also says, “All unrighteousness is sin . . . We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth
not; but he that is begotten of
God keepeth himself, and that
wicked one toucheth him not.”
(I John 5:17-18) A key to
overcoming and ceasing from
sin is by continually keeping
ourselves by His indwelling
power. It is up to us! No, it is
not by a salvation of works but
rather a loving, thankful
obedience and recognizing His
delivering power which He has
given to us and by recognizing
and overcoming the temptations that continually present themselves to us each and every day.
Paul tells us plainly, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make
a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” (I Corinthians 10:13) The Holy Spirit through Paul says we
can and must overcome the temptation to sin. He would not tell us we could do it if it were not true. He would
not expect us to overcome sin and live victoriously if He had not equipped and (continued on page ten)

empowered us and instructed us how to get it done. Here we see in this passage that there is no excuse for
sinning. When we do sin it is by personal choice. You cannot say “the Devil made me do it” or some other way
to explain away your evil deed. This passage tells us we can walk right through, past, around, under or over the
temptation to sin when it presents itself. No temptation can bulldoze you into sinning, God has said so
Himself! We will never be tempted beyond our ability to say NO, I will not sin! No matter how cunning Satan
and your old nature are, they are simply
no match for the delivering power of the
indwelling Holy Spirit in our lives . . .
providing He does indeed dwell within
us and we follow in obedience.
Continuing on, the Bible says,
“Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth
not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not
God. He that abideth in the doctrine of
Christ, he hath both the Father and the
Son. If there come any unto you, and
bring not this doctrine, receive him not
into your house, neither bid him God
speed: for he that biddeth him God
speed is partaker of his evil deeds.” (II
John 1:9-11) I cannot support, no not for
one moment, a pastor, preacher or
teacher who will not stand upon the True
doctrine found in the Word of God. You
and I must recognize and discern that
those who do not teach that you can and must overcome sin are false teachers and must reject them. Those
that excuse you for your continued sinning, those that allow known sin to continue in a congregation, those
who palliate or excuse away your living in sin are not of God, neither do they know Him. They must be openly
and powerfully rejected for the lies they bring in with them.
Brethren, continue on in holiness, in the fear of the Lord. As we all do this we will find ourselves looking
forward to the day of His coming. We must use our time wisely here, reaching others with the soul-saving
Gospel message. Let me leave you with these four encouraging passages.

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole
duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or
whether it be evil.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)

“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience,
experience; and experience, hope: and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in
our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” (Romans 5:3-5)

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in
the world.” (I John 4:4)

“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even
our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” (I John
5:4-5)
