SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS
It is strongly recommended that the product be designed, constructed, assembled and installed in accordance with
nationally recognized safety requirements appropriate forproducts covered by this standard.
ARI, as a manufacturers' trade association, uses its best efforts to develop standards employing state-of-the-art and
accepted industry practices. However,ARI does not certifyor guarantee safety of any products, components or systems
designed, tested, rated, installed or operated in accordance with thesestandards or that any tests conducted under its
standards will be non-hazardous or free from risk.

3.6 Energy Eficiency Ratio (EER). EER is a ratio calculated

by dividmg the cooling capacity in Btu/h Iw] by the power
input in watts [Wl at any given set of rating conditions,
expressed in BtuflMr [Wm (While there is no direct SI
Units equivalent, the analogous measure is a cooling COP.)

Section 5. Testing and Rating Requirements

3.7 Seasonal Energy Eficiency Ratio (SEER). Seasonal

Energy Efficiency Ratio is the total
cooling of a central
air-conditioner in Btu's during its normal usage period for
cooling (not to exceed 12 months) divided bythetotal
electric energy inputin watt-hours during thesame period as
determined in Appendices A (Section 4.1) and C.

3.8 Coefficient of Performance (COP) Heating. COP is a

ratio calculated by dividing the total heatcapacity provided
by the refrigeration system including
circulating fan heat, but
excluding supplementary resistanceheat,
by thetotal
elecmcal input in consistent units at any given setof rating
conditions.
3.9 Heating Seasonal Petformanee Factor (HSPF). HSPF
isthetotalheatingoutput
of a heat pump,including
supplementary electric heat in Btu[kJ]necessary to achieve
buildmg heating requirements during its normal annual usage
period for heating lvided bythetotal elecmc power in
watt-hours [Wh] during the same period, as determined in
Appendices B (Section 4.2) and C.
3.10 Degradarion Coefficient(CJ. The C, is the measure
of theefficiency loss due to thecycling ofthe units as
determined in Appendices A and C.

3.11 Integrated Part Load Value (IPLV). A single number

part load efficiency calculated per the method described in

described in this standard.

The following typesof air to air units rated less ,than 65,000

All other types and/or capacities of equipment within the
scope of thu standard shall have the capacity, EER and COP
(as required) tested in accordance with ASHRAE Standard
37-1988 and rated at conditions specified in Table 5. SEER
and/or HSPF may bedetermined on air-to-air equipment(as
application ratings) at the option of the minufacturer.

Standard Ratings relating to cooling or heating capacities

shall be net values. including the effects of circulating-fan
heat but not including supplementary heat. Power input
shall
be the total power input tothe compressor(s) and fan(s), plus
controls and other items required as part of the system for
normal operation.
Standard ratings of units which do not have indoor
air-circulating f a n s furnished as part of the model, i.e., split
system with indoor coilalone,shall
be establishedby
subtracting from the total cooling capacity 1250 Btu/h per
lo00 cfm [775 W/m3/s], and by adding the same amount to
the heating capacity. Total power input for both heating and
cooling shallbe increased by 365 W/lOOO cfm [226 W/m'/sl
of indoor air circulated.

A demand defrost system must be able to
monitor at least one parameterwhich always
varies with the amount of frost accumulated
on the outdoor coil of the heat pump. When
this parameter reaches a certain value, the
system initiatesa defrost. The terminationof
the defrostcan be accomplished by measuring
any parameter that can be used to sense the
elimination of frost from thecoil.
Systems that vary defrost intervalsaccording to outdoor dry-bulb tem rature are not
demand defrost systems. R i s is because
knowledge of dry-bulb temperatureonly predicts the Occurrence of frost. A demand defrost
system must function in response to a parameter which varies directly with frosting.

APPENDIX
PRESCRIPTIVE
C.
METHODOLOGY
FOR THE CYCLIC TESTINGOF DUCTED SYSTEMS
REQUIRED BY APPENDIX A, SECTIONS A4.1 and A4.2
C1 For the
purpose
of uniformity
in
the
cyclic
test
requirements of Appendix A, the following test apparatus and
conditions shallbe met:
C1.1 The test apparatus is a physical arrangement of
dampers, damper boxes.mixers, thermopile and ducts all
properly sealed and insulated. See Figures C1 through
C4 for typicaltestapparatus.Notearrangementand
size(s) of the components may be altered to meet the
physical requirementsof the unit tobe tested.

C2.1 Dampers and their boxes shall be located outside

of the ASHIUE Standard 37-88 pressure measurement
locations in the inlet air and outlet air ducts.
C3.1 The entire test apparatusshall not have a leakage
rate whichexceeds 20 cfm [94 Us] when a negative
pressure of 1 inch of water r0.25 Wa] is maintained at
the apparatus exitair location.
C4.1 The apparatusshall be insulatedtohave
value not to exceed0.04 total.

'ZT'

C5.1 The air mixeranda 40%maximumopen area

perforated screen shall be located in the outletair portion
of the apparatus upstream of theoutletdamper. The
mixer(s) shall be as described in ASHRAE 41.1-1986
Standard Merhod for Temperature Measurement. The
mixing deviceshallachieveamaximumtemperature
spread of 1.5"F[0.8 k] across the device. An inlet air
mixer is not required.
(26.1 The temperature d'flerence between inlet air and
outlet air shall be measured by athermopile. The
thermopile
shall
be constructed of 24 gauge
thermocouple wire with 16 junctions ateachend. At
each junction point the wire lnsulation shallbe stripped
for a length of 1 inch. The junction of the wires shall
have no more than two bondedturns.

34

C7.1 The dampers

shall
be capable of being .
completely opened or completely closed within a time
period not to exceed 10 seconds for each action. Airflow
through the equipment bemg tested should stopwithin 3
seconds
after
the
airflow
measuring
device
is
de-energized. The air pressure difference (AP)atthe
nozzle should be within2% of steady stateAP within 15
seconds fromthetimethe
air measuringdeviceis
re-energized.
C8.1 Test
set
up,
temperature,
and
electrical
measurements mustbe identical for "C"and " U ' tests in
order to obtain minimum error in C,. Electrical
measurements shall be taken with an integrating type
meter per 5.4.1 of ASHRAE 37-88 having an accuracy in
accordancewith 5.4.2 of ASHRAE 37-88 for all ranges
experienced during the cyclic test.
C9.1 Prior totakingtestdata,the
unit shallbe
operatedatleastonehourafterachieving
dry coil
conditions. The drain pan shall be drained and thedrain
opening plugged. The drain pan should be completely
dry in order to maximize repeatability and reproducibility
of test results.
C10.1 For coil only units not employing an enclosure,
the coil shall be tested with an enclosure constructed of 1
inch [2.54 cm] (6 pounds per cubic foot [96 kg/m'],
density) fiberglass ductboardor an equivalent "R" value.
For units with enclosures or cabinets, no extra insulating
or sealing shallbe employed.
