by Wilder. He tries to pump her for info
about her trip to Jordan; she tells him
little. He tells her he's taking her to

mission of recovering Leila and Haddad.
She tells him to stop selling her, she
will consider the idea. He smiles and

In Foz do Iguacu, informant waits in

a tavern until a shadowy figure arrives.
It's the drug lord of Foz. The drug lord
leaves the tavern, and the informant
follows him to a bus stop bench. On the
bench, the informant gives info he's
gathered on THE FARM: location, size,
and that "packages" are being sent there
from cities as far wide as Rio, Asuncion,
Buenos Aires. Drug lord tells informant
to go back and get more, then, abruptly,
sprays him with the DEVIL'S BREATH, then
knifes him, and calmly leaves

driven by a local Paraguayan driver.

Brazilian hotel called 'Hotel das Cataratas.'
Their identities show they are from
Blumenau, Brazil. The reader does not
know the hotel is in Foz, and does not
know the identities of the two people, but
girl's puppy tips the reader to the fact
that they are Haddad and Leila. They settle
in for a luxuriant two-week stay.

The worst is over; let's lay low

in style. Reader sees Haddads
eat and sleep well. The
nightmare is over.

Callie goes to nearby casino and meets

Taft's fixer, Moses. She says: Isn't it risky
to move so much weaponry across
borders? He smiles and tells her not to
worry, that her automobile will be
laundered' and everything will be
waiting for her at her hotel. She gives
Moses photos and the particulars on the
Haddads, and asks him to leverage his
contacts in the police and underground
to find them.

The Haddads have been here

four weeks. How many new

will I possibly find them?

are forged and how in this
case the docs would come
from Blumenau, a Brazilian
town settled in 1850 by
German immigrants and later
used by Nazis in the 1950s to

The Chevy crosses the Bridge of Friendship

and is stopped on the Brazilian side by
the Brazilian federal police. They comb
the car. As they do, Callie runs through
different scenarios in her head on how to
get out of the predicament. Kill the cops?
Escape back to Paraguay? That fucking
Wilder must have done this. And that
Moses is good for nothing. But then,
miraculously, the feds find none of the
guns she just bought at the hotel. They
are as stunned as Callie. Everybody looks
dumbfounded. They wave her on through
and into Brazil. How did Moses do it?

Brockman is tracking Callie

for insurance, but she has
no idea it's him who is
authorizing the surveillance.
Mistakenly, Callie thinks
that Wilder is behind it.
He's just the straw man,
though.

Ari Carlebach goes to St. E's to meet Taft.

They share a little reminiscence. Carlebach
says, 'Sorry about what happened to you
over there in Egypt.' He tells him that he
has asked the Institute to keep him
properly supplied, to take good care of
him in the Box. I know you're handling
Callie; the best place for her to deliver the
Haddads is THE FARM. Also, I want that
STENT back, at any cost.

How are you doing here?

How is our girl doing?
The Institute supports you.
When Callie checks in, have
her take the Haddads to
The Farm. And not to Va. Farm
(Carlebach is being sent by
Brockman, but neither Taft
nor the reader realize this.)

Callie goes to her hotel. In the underground parking lot she hears someone
calling to her from a white van. Inside it
is Boz, a CIA asset in southern Brazil
who is a specilist in computer hacking and
electronic surveillance. Boz shows her how
he is going to track the Haddads from the
van. He will use a radio wave scanner to
sweep the streets for a hit from the girl's

Boz can cross-reference

the girl's ID with the iPhone
and the Facebook database.

scanning for the microchip

Brazilian federal police. 'We'll use it
against them.' Callie gets a mssg in a pizza
delivery box: It's from Moses. Meet me
at the Falls tomorrow.

Next day at a catwalk beneath the Iguacu

Falls, Moses tells Callie he's already
found the Haddads. When Callie asks him
where they are, he turns and looks up at
the luxury Hotel das Cataratas, atop the hill.
Callie's reaction: Damn, this old guy comes
as advertised. Reversal: low tech beats
high-tech surveillance.

Callies hurries up the hill to the hotel,

and scours the hotel. She can't find them.
Finally, she goes to the pool out back.
Haddad sees her first, and freezes; he
thinks she's come to grab them again.
A female bodyguard dressed as
a waitress grabs the two and leads them
into the building, but leaving Leila's dog
behind in her haste. The bodyguard signals
to another male bodyguard; he tells Callie
she will be escorted off the grounds. Callie
flips him into the pool, runs out and sees
Haddads being put in a van and speeding
off. There are no cars about; Callie hails a
double-decker tourist bus to follow them.

He will drive up and down

the streets of the city
using a van that is dressed
up as a political campaign

She's having the staff prepare rooms
for everyone and making sure
there is enough food picked from
the "Garden of Eden."

Callie races through the forest down to

the Iguacu River. She commandeers a boat
to chase the Haddads, who have fled
down the river on a motorized raft.
But where the Iguacu River meets the
Parana, the raft flips over and Callie
loses them. She crawls up on the river
bank and heads off to find Boz.

Callie

Boz, sweeping the city in the van, finds

Callie. He tells her he's got good news and
bad: He knows where the child is -- but he
also knows who she's with: Remo, in the
drug lord's slum, The Queijo (The Cheese,
in English. It's called the Cheese because
it's a rat-trap of a slum, and the cheese
has drawn in the "rats," the poor.). She
says to him: Let's go and get them! Boz
says: Are you nuts? They call Taft on the
SAT phone for advice. Taft tells Callie that
once she picks up the Haddads, to take
them to THE FARM, a place near Blumenau
in the neighboring Brazilian state of
Santa Catarina. How do I get them out of
the Drug Lord's slum? He runs the place

Haddad and Leila are welcomed to the

Queijo by Remo. He takes them on a tour
of his mansion, and shows them the
grounds out back where the Devil's Breath
trees are cultivated. Haddad notices the
workers' faces are covered in surgical
masks. Remo apologizes: I'm sorry your
child is upset with the masks; there is a
reason for them. Let me tell you why.'

The following day, Callie springs the

Haddads from the drug lord's mansion.
As Moses has advised her, she pretends
to want a job on Remo's Devil's Breath
staff, which get picked every morning. She
gets the Haddads out through an
underground tunnel to the Parana River,
where a boat is waiting for them with Boz
at the wheel. Callie gets Haddad to go
along without a fight because she brings
the French dog, which she has recovered
from the hotel staff, and because she had
a connection with Leila. Also, she explains
to Haddad what she knows about the
STENT and tells him they can remove it
at the FARM. Remo, the drug lord, chases
them to the FARM.

On the ride to The Farm, Callie explains

to Haddad why she has been involved in
his case: she works as a private contractor
for OCI. She explains what OCI is, how it
was created by Reagan, how it has a blank
check, how bad they are at their job, how
they only recovered 1 kid, and she was
the one to do it. That's why she was asked
to take his wife's case. 'I'm for hire, I don't
work for anybody.' She then retells her
return to the States from Egypt, her
meeting with 'this old guy who's knows a
lot of people in the State Dept,' Brockman.

Callie and the Haddads arrive at the FARM.

It's amazing, like something out of
a British fantasy: beautiful, clean lush
country paradise with horses and glades.
Hannah Werner greets Haddad. She tells
him that she will take care of the STENT
and the child. After they go inside, Werner
talks to Callie. As they talk, there is a shot:
Remo, who has followed Callie to the
Farm, has tried to kill Werner, but misses.
He is corraled by Werner's henchmen
and taken away to a horror room.

Werner escorts Callie to her bedroom: the

room where Callie was raised as a little
girl. Werner apologizes for the violence
but says Remo is a dangerous man. He will
be handled by the police. Sorry you had to
see that. He is a brutal man, and those kind
of people only understand one thing.
I wanted to personally show you this room
because it is my favorite room here. My
dear friend Ari Carlebach stays in this
room. Speech in praise of Carlebach, his
expertise as a researcher and physician.
The work he has been doing on the STENT
will change the world. He is my light.

Callie, Haddad and Leila go to the outdoor

adoption party jubilee, arranged by
Werner. Werner talks about the settlement
of the Valley of the Europeans, her phony
background, her surgical qualifications
to get Haddad to relax about the next day's
surgery. Callie's suspicions about Werner
mount.

In the hallway outside the butcher block

in the 'Castle,' where surgical experiments
on children are conducted on the FARM,
Werner is about to go in and operate on
Leila, who is sedated on the the OR table.
But she gets called away (Off camera:
Werner is called by her helpers to respond
to the fact that one of the twins has
woken from her pre-operative, druginduced stupor and escaped. After Werner
excuses herself, Haddad tells Callie he
doesn't feel comfortable letting this old
lady operate on his kid. He will do it
himself. He begs Callie to help him. What
do I do? Callie says. Just keep an eye out
for Werner and don't let that crazy bitch
into the OR. Callie says yes. Haddad
scrubs up, puts on surgical garb, asks
Callie for her belt so he can immobilize
his daughter, goes back into the OR and
puts the knife to the back of his daughter's
head

Callie is standing guard outside the OR.

Werner comes back and asks her what
is happening. Callie explains that Haddad
had to do the surgery himself. Callie sees
something has changed in Werner's
grandmotherly demeanor. Werner goes
into the OR and asks Haddad what he is
doing. He tells her that he removed the
STENT but that he has to ask her: Why is
so much operating equipment missing?
What kind of surgeon are you? Werner
approaches him, saying 'Calm down,
calm down, everything will be fine.' And
in a quick motion, she swipes his jugular.
She then turns to Leila. All is lost

47

Callie bursts into the OR, sees a blood

smear leading to a corner, sees one of
Haddad's feet sticking out awkwardly,
and sees Werner leaning over the girl.
She charges Werner, knocks her away
from the girl; Werner was about to attach
an IV containing poison into the girl's arm.
The force of the jolt knocks over the IV

like the horse pro that she is, she saddles
a stallion, talking to it in Portuguese as she
readies the horse, and escapes with the
child on horseback into the forests.

At the United Medical Center in Anacostia,
Washington, Taft is led into an MRI room.
The nurse asks the accompanying guards to
leave the room, explaining that any metal
around an MRI machine can be deadly.
(Vignette on flying scissors killing a patient.)
Taft is eased into the cylinder and the
machine is turned on. Later, the doctor
notices Taft is bleeding from his upper
right arm. (Off-camera, the iron-core
microchip is ripped out of Taft's arm by the
MRI macine, like a reverse bullet.) The
staff patches Taft's arm. The doctor puzzles
over the MRI results. Nothing is wrong with
Taft. Take him back to St.
Elizabeth's, he tells the orderlies. The
ambulance heads back to St. E's, but on the
way swerves suddenly, pulls over, then after
a pause makes a U-turn and heads for
I-95, away from St. E's. (After a linebreak,
in a single paragraph like a newspaper
report, the reader learns that the
ambulance is found at a highway rest stop,
three mutilated bodies inside, carved up,
and Taft missing.) Taft has escaped.
The next morning, Callie is in Taft's quarters
at St. E's. Wilder has ordered her to go. Ari
Carlebach is there and starts questioning
her. She was one of the last to see Taft at St.
E's, and he was her handler. She tells him
she doesn't know where he is, and although
she notes the drop of blood in the model
city of Budapest, she tells Carlebach she
has no idea where Taft went. Callie asks
Carlebach how Taft got away. He tells her
Taft faked his symptoms ingeniously. Ari
gets desperate. His dilemna: He must get
Callie to tell him where the STENT is w/o
tipping his hand on the stent or his prior
relationship with Taft. Finally, he pulls
out a gun and tells Callie he tried to do
this nicely, and to start walking. He is

going to take her to the BOX.

Callie is completely immobilized and

strapped into Taft's chair. Carlebach
demands she hand over the STENT. She
says she doesn't have it. A pity, he says,
because I will have to torture you and
then dispose of you in the REMOLATOR.
No one will ever know you existed. You
will be nothing but fertilizer for my posies
in my NYC penthouse garden on the
Upper East Side. But Callie turns the tables:
She sneezes, and asks him to take the
hanky in her shirt pocket and wipe her
nose. 'I don't want to go out with snot
all over my face, Doc.' He takes out the
hanky, notices something inside it, opens
it and sees a gray powder: The DEVIL's
BREATH powder that Callie got from
Haddad (off camera) during the ride to
the FARM. Callie does the only thing
she can do: She blows the powder into
Carlebach's face. The doctor is wholly
and instantly stunned by the powerful
drug. He falls prey to it. Callie tells him
to release her from the chair. Dutifully,
he does. She tells him to sit in the chair
and gives him a message to pass on to
his superiors. Then Callie leaves him.

The next day, the setting is Callie's house

in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
Callie is teaching Leila how to saddle a
horse in the barn, when Wilder enters.
He and Callie take a walk outside of the
barn. She is expecting him to take the child
away but instead Wilder informs her that
in recognition of what Callie has done,
several 'benefactors' are prepared to give
her off-the-books money to pay for
Leila's care, which will allow Callie to
keep the child during the summer
months and put her into a private school
in the DC area in the fall. Wilder won't
reveal who the benefactors are
This is just what Callie secretly wanted unconditional love, from a child like Leila.

CODA: The previous day, after Callie departs:

There are footsteps in the corridor of St. E's
and an unidentified man enters the
BOX and walks over to Carlebach. What
happenened, Ari, the man asks. She blew
a powder in my face. A gray powder? Yes.
Why didn't I think of it? The Devil's Breath
Yes, that girl is indeed SPECIAL, says
the mystery man. He then asks Carlebach
to crawl into the REMOLATOR, asks him
if he's nice and cozy, and hits the start
button
