A new study from the US Center for Economic Development indicates that single black
women, even in their peak earning years, have a median net worth of only $5. Net worth is
measured by taking a person’s assets – bank accounts, investments, real estate – less mort-
gages, outstanding loan, credit card balances and other debts. The figures in the study are
based on 2007 data and, after the economic downturn, would no doubt be worse now.
The category “single women” includes those who are living singly, single parents, divorced
and widowed. Their median assets are revealing. To illustrate the distinction between aver-

represent the poorest of the poor in the wealthiest nation in history. They are also the people
in the US who are the least likely to have access to medical insurance.
I not only ask myself how this is morally tolerable in so wealthy a nation but also how this
type of circumstance cannot lead to anything but a disastrous economic outcome in the en-
