: RULES AND CLASSROOM CULTURE

1.0 PROBLEM / EVENTS

After reporting for duty on the first day at SK LB Johnson, me and my
practicum mates waited for the schools briefing. After our short brief with the
headmaster, Encik Abd Razak , we waited in the schools office for our timetable.
I was given 5 Arif for this two months practicum here. On that Tuesday,I had
conducted an ice breaking game where we introduced ourselves and play some
games. During my orientation sessions, I was able to identify some of the issues
that I will face in the weeks to come. One of the issues or problems that I know
for sure is the pupils in my class is on an intermediate level. There are some of
them who are weak in English and I also see the atmosphere in the classroom
could not be controlled when the first time I walked into the classroom. Thus,
after a familiarization session, I have set some rules together with the pupils that
will be carried out during the teaching and learning. This is to make the teaching
and learning can proceed smoothly. However, sometimes it is difficult to apply the
rules that I have established for the pupils because this is my first week at the
school and pupils are still behaving naughty to see my response to them.
2.0 ANALYSIS
Based on what has happened, I discovered some knowlledge that should
be hihglighted by all new teachers that are getting into a new school. Among
them are:

2.1 Heart murmur:
I wonder if I can control the behavior of students when I teach and I
could learn the learning culture practiced by the school.

2.2 New realization:

After this, I began to realize the importance of applying the rules in
a classroom for controlling the behavior of their pupils and to educate
pupils about the role of the teacher as a leader in the classroom. Without
rules and routines in the classroom, the teacher will certainly have a
problem to control the behavior of disruptive pupils or pupils with learning
difficulties. However, a teacher can not assume rules to be followed by
pupils overnight. Teachers should constantly remind pupils of the rules in
the classroom so that the rules can become routine for pupils. In addition,
teachers also need to be concerned about the culture of learning is
practiced in schools so that teachers can assess the extent to which
cultural practices in the pupil achievement in academics.
3.0 PROPOSED FOLLOW-UP
For this issue, one of the proposal that I can come out with is to set some
rules in the classroom. The sets of rules must be agreed with the students so that
pupils can accept rules that I have established. In addition, the rules which I
implemented is to have a systematic and controlled teaching in my classroom.
4.0 FOLLOW-UP PERIOD
I am expecting that my pupils will behave and be more discipline starting
next week. I also hope that the remaining time period of these seven weeks, will
help me get to know my pupils so that a good teachers and pupils relationship
can be established.

1.0 PROBLEM / EVENTS

Alhamdulillah, after more than a week in this school I never thought it will
be this tough and tiring. It is like 180 degree of turning from my college life. It was
a very different environment compared to the environment in IPG. After almost
two week entering my class, there were a lot to improve. In of my lesson, I was
not able to finish few parts of my lesson. The pupils could not present their
bubble maps during some lesson which had developed a sense of frustration in
them. Other than that, when any part of the lesson plan could not be completed,
this had interrupt the pupils learning from taking place.

I believe that this

occurred because of the lessons that were too difficult for them where it took time
for them to digest the main points of the text during presentation stage.
In this week as well, my supervisor, Madam Chng Bee Ee, came into my
class. I was very nervous in teaching reading. She told me about instruction
management which needed some improvement. She really helped in improving
my teaching because she told all my weaknesses and strengths in my teaching.
Nevertheless, I have to be a very open-minded person and try to reflect all of her
comments positively. Thus, I feel really lucky to have supervisor like her who is
willing to help me to become a better teacher.
2.0 ANALYSIS
Based on what has happened, I discovered some new knowledge and
expereices that should be highlighted by all the teachers during their first week of
lesson with a new class of pupils. Among them are:
2.1 Heart murmur:

ANIS WARDAH BINTI

[PRACTICUM JOURNAL] YUSRI
I wonder if I could finish all of the stages in the lesson plan for the
next classes. This is to let the pupils have a great and smooth lesson so
that they can obtain a better and meaningful learning throughout my
teaching.
2.2 A new realization:
After analysing my weaknesses and problems, I noticed that the
factors that influence my instructional management are because I did not
identify my pupils level of language and their level of cognitive skill. It is
very important for a teacher to know their pupils and their level of thinking.
This is because it can help the teacher to make and conduct a lesson
without any disturbance.
3.0 PROPOSED FOLLOW-UP
As a new teacher in a new school, I should have asked the teacher
incharged about their grades and level of English from their past tests and
examinations. I also need to group my pupils according to their needs so that
they can have the appropriate focus they need. Knowing the qulities of your
pupils is very important for the teacher to identify the level of understanding
among the pupils.

4.0 FOLLOW-UP PERIOD

I hope that I could give good instructions for my next claseses which are
starting from next week. . I also hope that the remaining time period of six weeks
I can have a good relationship with my pupils so that teachers and pupilss
relationship can be established.

: WHITEBOARD MANAGEMENT

1.0 PROBLEM / EVENTS

Alhamdulillah, after two weeks in this school I never thought it will be this
tough and tiring. This short week ended very fast. The biggest change that I
could feel was my level of confidence in teaching. However, I just have another
week left before I end my practical for this semester. How I really hope I could
have a longer time in this school to correct all my mistakes in teaching in this
three weeks. As for this third week, En. Abd. Bashir bin Haji Hassan who is my
supervisor for this practicum came and made his first observation for my class.
The main problem that occurred was my whiteboard management throughout my
lesson in the classroom. One of the matters that I need to do when handling my
whiteboard is to write the day, date, and topic in every lesson. This is to make the
pupils aware about the topic that they will learn in that lesson. Other than that, I
also need to rearrange my word cards and picture cards neatly so that the pupils
will not get confused on the content I am teaching.

2.2 A new realization:

[PRACTICUM JOURNAL] YUSRI
After analysing my weaknesses and problems, I noticed that the
factor that influence my whiteboard management is because of the size of
teaching aids that must be pasted on the whiteboard for the pupils to read
and refer throughout the lesson. As thousands of teachers have found,
whiteboards are a great way of actively involving pupils in the learning
process and it is a terrific tool for immediate feedback and assessment.
For teachers, a whiteboard is flexible. Teachers can put literally anything
they like on it. Wherever they like, and in any position, any size, any
shape. Unlike an electronic system, there are never any constraints.
3.0 PROPOSED FOLLOW-UP
As a new teacher in a new school, I should have asked my mentor teacher
or any experienced teacher about their style and ways in handling their teaching
aids especially the ones that are needed to be pasted on the whiteboard.

4.0 FOLLOW-UP PERIOD

I hope that I could be a good whiteboard manager for my next claseses . I
also hope that the remaining time period of one week I can have a good
relationship with my pupils so that teachers and students relationship can be
established.
