Lesson Topic: Editing a cloze passage to understand the impact of language features
on meaning and reading fluency
Recent Prior Experience: students have been engaged in daily shared, guided and independent reading of the text
Light Horse Boy by Dianna Wolfer and have completed a number of lessons focusing on language features and choices
made by the author. Students have concentrated on constructing an emotive language word wall that they have been
adding to each day. Punctuation, emotive language and the structure of letters has been studied throughout the year.

T will explain: WALT (we are learning to) edit text in


order to improve reading fluency and comprehension
T will show a modified section of the text on IWB that
has had the punctuation omitted and emotive
language altered
T will model reading the passage exaggerating the
monotony and lack of clarity when punctuation is
omitted as well as the demonstrating the change in
meaning when emotive language is not used
Ss will discuss how the missing language features
make the sentence boring and lacking in meaning
T will inform Ss that they will be given a new cloze
passage that they will edit by adding punctuation, the
structural format of a letter and emotive language
Ss will use their emotive language word wall that they
have been adding to in previous lessons
