Kia Comes to West Point, Georgia

In 2006, Kia announced plans to build its first North American assembly plant in West Point, Georgia. The
project was recognized as an Economic Development Deal of the Year by Business Facilities magazine. To
the town of West Point, the arrival of Kia was more like the economic deal of the century. The jobs created
by Kia and supplier companies have brought far-reaching benefits for a region previously suffering the outmigration of a once-dominant textile industry. When Kia began taking applications for employment at the
West Point facility in the winter of 2008, the company received 43,000 responses over a 30-day period.

Expanding in Georgia
Just in the last five years, 25 automotive suppliers
have either located or expanded operations in
Georgia, creating more than 6,800 jobs.

The objective of this project is to further

improve the competitiveness of KMMG by
providing a steady and reliable supply of auto
parts for KMMGs continually increasing
production. We chose West Point because of the
proximity to our customer base, but also because
of the extraordinary support and interest by
the local communities. The City of West Point
and Troup County worked very closely with
us to resolve any start-up issues. They truly
are committed to building a business-friendly
environment, and we feel that we have become
good partners.

Mando Corp., an automotive parts supplier, first

located in Meriwether County, Georgia in 2011 and

The Southeast is a hot market for automakers. In 2012, residents registered nearly 2.5 million new vehicles,
a 48.8 percent increase since last reported vehicle registrations in 2009. The Southeast accounts for 17
percent of new auto and light truck sales in the U.S. Over the next two years, vehicle registrations are
expected to increase to more than 3 million registrations and remain above this threshold for the near
future. Auto manufacturers seek to be close to sales, providing a clear advantage for the Southeast.

consolidation will lead to slower growth in
automotive manufacturing-related employment
in the coming years. The closure of GM and Ford
plants in the Atlanta area accounts for the drop in
workers from 2006 to 2007. Since 2009, however,
employment in this segment has increased by 20
percent, bolstered by new assembly plants and
automotive-related operations coming on-line
over the past three to four years, such as Kia and
its suppliers.

Implement Lean Principles
Groove-Pin, a manufacturer of engineered

the automotive industry, needed to improve
on-time performance and set-up times. In
March 2010, EI2 lean specialists visited
Groov-Pin to assess the companys needs

After changes were implemented, on-time
performance improved by nearly one-third to

production and sales increased; and new jobs
were added.
Georgia Tech has helped us do in less than

Ports and Air

Georgias transportation infrastructure is world-class.

Toyota Exports First Toyota Venzas

Through Port of Brunswick
On May 2, 2013, the first Toyota Venzes set
sail for Russia and Ukraine through the Port of
Brunswick. The Toyota Venzas are produced in
Georgetown, Kentucky.
The export of American-built Venzas
to Russia and Ukraine further solidifies
Toyotas commitment to establishing its
U.S. manufacturing operations as a key
supplier of vehicles for global markets. We
are proud to partner with the Georgia Ports
Authority and all other parties involved,
and are grateful for their support of this
initiative.
Corinne Akahoshi, National Manager of
Marine Logistics Operations, Toyota Motor
Sales U.S.A.
Sources: First Toyotas shipped from Georgia to Russia,
Ukraine, Georgia Ports Authority Press Release, 5.2.2013

The Port of Brunswick handles

approximately 10 percent of all
U.S. roll on/roll off trade, and 12
percent of U.S. RO/RO imports.

Atlanta has long been the transportation center of the Southeast. With well-maintained highway systems
connecting areas around the state to the rest of the nation, products made in Georgia are never far from
their markets. Two major rail systems crisscross the state, and two major ports, Savannah and Brunswick,
enable manufacturers and processors to quickly ship to domestic and global customers. Atlantas HartsfieldJackson International Airport keeps businesses in the Southeast connected to global customers
and partners.
Georgias Ports
Savannah is the second-largest container port
on the East Coast and is the fourth-largest in
the U.S.
Brunswicks Colonels Island facility is the
nations second-largest auto port for imports and
first for imports of new vehicles.

Georgias Airports

The ports have dedicated rail facilities and direct

long-haul access.

80 percent of the nations major consumer

markets are within a two-hour flight of Atlanta.

Savannahs exports of automotive equipment

increased by 76 percent between 2008
and 2012.

Georgia has two international airports,

Savannah and Atlanta. Seven additional airports
provide commercial passenger service around
the state.

Port expansions and improvements totaling

$1 billion are planned over the next 10 years,
including a $550 million deepening of the
Savannah River channel allowing for larger
ships coming through the Panama Canal to the
East Coast.

Port Profile: Colonels Island in Brunswick

For the auto industry in the Southeast, the Port of
Brunswick means getting lots of product to market
very quickly. The Port of Brunswicks Colonels
Island Facility ranks third busiest in the U.S. for
total roll on/roll off cargo and second for the import
of such cargo, processing close to 637,000 auto
units in FY 2013. In 2009, Mercedes-Benz opened
its new import processing center at Brunswick, its
South Atlantic Hub. This processing center handles
an average of 40,000 auto units per year. BMW is
also a major customer, moving an estimated 35,000
auto units through the port.

20

Cordele Inland Port is the newest addition to

Georgias growing port system. The Cordele
facility offers a direct 200-mile rail route to
Savannahs Garden City terminal and providing
customers direct access to 38 weekly
shipping services.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

is the worlds busiest in passenger volume.
Hartsfield-Jackson has 1.2 million square feet of
cargo handling space and 2 miles of
mechanized conveyors.

Georgias Tax Credit Programs

Georgia has no employment laws which are more

stringent or restrictive than those at the federal
level. Georgia is an employment-at-will state. In
the absence of a written contract and in compliance
with federal employment laws, employers in Georgia
are able to exercise their own hiring and dismissal
decisions; state laws make no provisions for
wrongful discharge.

Rapid Permitting and Site Availability

One-Stop Permitting: Georgia offers a consolidated state environmental program with delegated authority
from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for issuance and enforcement of federal permits.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources issues or denies all permits required by state and federal
environmental protection legislation when a facility is being located in the state. One-stop permitting
enables prospective industries to obtain expedited required permits.

Available Sites
Georgia communities develop and maintain shovel-ready sites.

The GUARANTEED READY FOR ACCELERATED

DEVELOPMENT (GRAD) site evaluation is a new
program established by Georgia Allies in an effort to
enhance economic development opportunities in the
state of Georgia. Sites that meet GRAD standards
have met infrastructure and environmental-related
requirements and are ready for development.
GRAD sites :
have been submitted by a local community or
economic development applicant and selected
for review;
have had their applications reviewed by a
professional third party;

have been validated as meeting standards

showing that they are at an advanced state of
readiness for development and use by prospects
based on a third-party review.
The GRAD Certification of a given site is valid for
a period of 24 months (unless certain conditions
change, such as acquisition of the site by an
industry) and can be renewed indefinitely by
completing a successful review of updated
information. The GRAD program is administered
by a third party, BFPC LLC, a Norcross, Georgia
firm, experienced in site selection and economic
development consulting.
