Comfy Crown

Birthdays, dress up, tea party, princess costume or

every day play, This little crown can do it all!

The design of this crown is so soft and comfy that it can be worn and
loved all day! Made with either continuous elastic or a snap closure.
And if your little one is as messy as mine, you can throw the crown
in the wash and it will come out looking as good as new.
There are 3 styles in this pattern to cover all styles from classic king
to beautiful princess and snow queen! The crown is completely
reversible, so you can choose to use different prints on each side for
two crowns in one, or one fabric for both sides.
This Fresh Designs pattern is suitable for beginner sewers and can be made in any medium weight woven
fabric. The crown is one size fits most, from toddler through to adult.

Constructing the Pattern

Prepare the Elastic Casing - SNAP finish
1

Take one elastic casing piece. Fold in half lengthwise, with RIGHT sides together.

Sew along the open long edge with 1/4 (6mm) seam allowance.

Do not sew
the short ends!

Do not sew
the short ends!

Turn your elastic casing right side out and press.

TIP: Do you own a loop turner?

It makes turning a casing like
this an easy 2 second job!

Now take your elastic (see p3 for length) and pop a safety pin on
the end. Insert the elastic in to one end of your elastic casing.

Use the safety pin to pull the elastic through the casing.
STOP when the end on your elastic is 1 (2.5cm) from end of the casing (which you
just inserted the elastic in to). Measure another 1/2 (12mm) further along the casing
and STITCH down the width of the casing to secure your elastic.

Now take the end of the casing and fold it over 1/4 (6mm)
Then fold over again on the stitch line. Press.

Use the safety pin to carefully pull

the elastic through the casing.

Then stitch along the fold.

Leave 1 (2.5cm) at the end ungathered.

With a tiny bit of elastic poking out the end,
pop in a pin 1 (2.5cm) from the end.

REPEAT steps 1-7 for the other elastic casing.

Assembling the Crown

NOTE: For simplicity, the following steps are illustrated using the classic crown piece. However the process is
the same for each of the crown designs.
one crown piece and place it right side
13 Take
DOWN. Lay your interfacing on top with the

shiny side DOWN. Carefully centre the interfacing

(there should be a 1/2 (12mm) gap around the
outside. Iron carefully in place.

Business TIP:

If you are making this crown to sell, now is a

great time to sew in your brand label. Sew it
on to the middle of one crown piece.

SNAP FINISH: Turn one crown piece over so that it is right side UP. Place one elastic piece down

with the open edge towards the outside of the crown. Place the other elastic piece down on the other
side.
The bottom of the elastic should be 1/2 (1.2cm) from the bottom edge of the crown.

1/2 gap
FOR CONTINUOUS ELASTIC: Turn one crown piece over so that it is right side UP. Place elastic with
one end on each side of the crown. The bottom of the elastic should be 1/2 (1.2cm) from the bottom
edge of the crown.

15

Lay your other crown piece down on top with right side DOWN.
Your elastic pieces should now be sandwiched between the two crown pieces.

16

Sew around the perimeter of your crown piece, carefully maintaining a 1/2 (1.2cm) seam allowance.
TIP: Use the edge of your interfacing as a guide to sew around - it should be 1/2 (12mm) from the
edge all the way around.
Leave a 3 (7.5cm) gap on the straight bottom edge.

17

Carefully trim the excess elastic and casing.

18

Clip the curves and corners as shown below for the crown piece of your choice.
Be VERY careful when clipping in to the corners - you want to cut AS CLOSE to the stitches as possible
but do NOT cut the threads (or your crown will start to fall apart!)

19

Turn your crown right side out through the gap at the bottom. Push out all of the corners using a chopstick or blunt pencil. Then press your crown piece carefully, paying extra attention to the gap at the bottom - you want it to be straight, neatly folded and for both folds to be sitting neatly on top of each other.

topstitch around the edge of the crown piece approx 1/8 (3mm) from the edge. Take extra
20 Carefully
care when sewing along the bottom (closing the gap) to be sure that the two layers are sitting neatly.
