GENERAL AIM OF THE LESSON:
To introduce the category of Article and to
enable students to use it correctly in contexts.
OBJECTIVES:
COGNITIVE OBJECTIVES:
To recognize the article;
To differentiate between the
definite/indefinite and zero article;
To complete sentences with the three
types of articles;
To improve pronunciation and speaking
abilities;
To develop and practice the productive
skills (writing and speaking) and the
receptive skills (listening and reading);
AFFECTIVE OBJECTIVES:
To activate the Ss in the process of
teaching;

To create a relaxed atmosphere, proper


for studying, in order to offer the
background for easy conversation
between T and Ss;
To encourage students to use their

To raise expectations and create
involvement in reading tasks.
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE:

and dont offer many answers

METHOD: Communicative approach;
TEACHING TECHNIQUES: independent activities,
brainstorming, conversation, explanatory
reading;

Procedure
ACTIVITY I WARMING UP
Aims: - to create a pleasant atmosphere and relax the
Ss
- to check their homework

Time: 3 min
Interaction: T Ss, S Ss
Skills: reading
Procedure: T greets the students, asks them about
whos absent and checks the homework by asking Ss
to read and present their solutions (T/F) for exercise
1.b/15. Ss answer Ts greeting, present their
homework and then they listen.
ACTIVITY II LEAD-IN
Aim: to introduce the theme of the lesson
Time: 5 min
Interaction: T-Ss, GW
Skills: speaking, writing
Procedure: Ss are put in groups. T explains that each
group has to look very carefully to a picture for 30
seconds. During this time, T writes some activities on
the Bb. When times up, Ss hand over the pictures
and have to say who performed those actions.
On the Bb should appear:

ACTIVITY III PRESENTATION
Aims: - to introduce the new lesson The Article
- to present the three types of articles: definite=the,
indefinite=a/an, and zero/no article and the situations in
which they are used.

Time: 15 min

Skills: writing, reading, speaking
Procedure: T writes the title on the board and explains that
in English, there are three types of articles: I. Indefinite
article: a //, /ei/+consonant
Eg. a book
an /n/+vowel
an
egg
II. Definite article: the // + cons.

III. Zero article/ No article

T asks Ss to read in turns the examples from their textbooks
and then discuss with the help of a poster when the definite
and zero articles are being used.
ACTIVITY IV PRACTICE
AUCTION GAME
Aim: to get Ss use properly the articles in texts
Time: 15 min
Interaction: Gw, T-Ss
Skills: listening, speaking
Procedure:
T gives Ss a handout with a text which misses articles. Ss are
told that they will take part in an auction game. Each group
is allocated a certain amount of money. The aim is to use
this money to buy correct words to fill the gaps. Ss are given
four minutes to read through the exercise, then, starting with
gap1, proceed to auction pieces of paper with the, a, an
on them. T reads the text and the teams must buy the word
they need to complete the gap. The team that buys the
correct word gets a money prize. Anyone else loses the
cash they spent on the wrong word. The winner is the team
with the most money at the end.
ACTIVITY V PRODUCTION
WORKING ON PROVERBS

Aim: -to make Ss aware of the use of zero article


-to present Ss some of the English proverbs and
stimulate them in finding the
Romanian correspondent.
Time: 9 min
Interaction: Ss-Ss, GW
Skills: speaking, writing
Procedure:
Each group has to choose a slip of paper. On each paper
there are two English proverbs that Ss have to translate into
Romanian within three minutes. Then, a representative from
each group goes to the blackboard and writes the proverbs
both in English and in Romanian. Next, T and Ss discuss the
omission of the definite article before the nouns expressing a
general meaning in English.
The proverbs are:

Appearances are deceptive.
Appetite comes with eating.
Business before pleasure.
Experience is the best teacher.
Love is blind.
Money makes the world go round.
Speech is silver but silence is golden.
Time cures all things.
Time is money.
Walls have ears.

ACTIVITY VI EVALUATION AND HOMEWORK
ASSIGNMENT
Aims: - to evaluate Ss work
- to assign homework
Time: 3 min
Interaction: T Ss
Procedure: T grades the Ss who have had an active
contribution during the lesson (if it is the case) and accounts
for them.
As a homework, Ss have to do exercise 10/17 and 3/19 in
their textbooks.
