My interest in going for a double Masters Degree, one in Adult
Education in Literacy and the other in Adult Ed in Religious Ed., is both complex and simple. I will explain the relevance as follows.
At a very young age I was introduced to the importance of Faith
and the love of voracious reading with the importance of the love of Education. I come from a generational line of Educators. My cousin Rose attended Fordham: Part time teacher. I also have a cousin who is 10 years my senior, who never learned to read. This difference has upset me profoundly. I do not have to explain the pain and the psychological difficulties one suffers. I have always been sensitive to his plight.
When I originally attended College, my Major was English Lit.,
Minor in Psych.
At the age of 5 due to my natural curiosity I was introduced into
the reality of death. By 7, biologically it fascinated me, spiritually it devastated me. Therefore the experience has left me crippled on my knees with one hand holding on to the Catholic Church.
I have been through Catholic Education as a child. As an adult;
Catholic Bible studies, Charismatic Spiritual experiences, Healing Services etc. The Catholic Church is my first love and English is my second. The Word is my Hope and Salvation.
I entered Funeral Service as a 3rd generation Funeral Director at the
age of 21. Due to my fathers’ stroke and fear that as a young adult my dad would commit suicide from hopelessness. I entered it for his sake. It worked for him and made me that much closer to God, with a greater love for the Church.
Before I entered Funeral Directing School I wanted to be an
English teacher. After I received my Undergraduate degree, it became obvious that I could never teach English like the experience I received with Fr. Lauder and the Catholic Novel, a class he hounded me to take. It humbled me enough to go back to my beginnings and have compassion again.
There is no greater love for me than to teach an adult to read, and
then teach an adult who can read, the Catholic faith. Only both will satisfy my heart and soul. That is why my experiences are unique and relevant for a double Masters. As a continuation and necessity to education, my life’s work, my Catholic spiritual experiences and expression. As a foot note I once took a Teachers exam and passed it, without ever having a class in education.
