Calcium Carbonate

HuberCrete Calcium Carbonate as a Partial Replacement for Fly Ash in Concrete.

Powdered limestone (HuberCrete calcium carbonate) has been previously examined
as a potential partial replacement for cement. Finely ground limestone with a controlled
particle size gives acceptable properties for replacement of up to 20% cement. In
addition, it gives higher green strength, reduced permeability, and improved workability.
However, powdered limestoneis not a pozzolan and reduces compressive strength at
higher loadings.

Faiz U.A. Shaikh, Steve W.M. Supit (2014)Mechanical and durability properties of
high volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete containing calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
nanoparticles. The effects of CaCO3 nanoparticles on compressive strength and
durability properties of high volume fly ash (HVFA) concretes containing 40% and 60%
fly ash as partial replacement of cement are evaluated in this study. Results show that
1% CaCO3 nanoparticles exhibited the highest compressive strength among all nanoCaCO3 contents and about 22% higher than that of cement mortar. It is also found that
1% CaCO3 nanoparticles improves the microstructure by forming additional calcium
silicate hydrate gels and decreases the calcium hydroxide and calcium silicates of
HVFA concretes. It is also revealed that the addition of CaCO3 nanoparticles not only
led to much denser microstructure in HVFA matrix but also changed the formation of
hydration products, hence contributed to the improvement of early-age compressive
strength and durability properties of HVFA concretes.

Buyung Wendi Windaka (2012 ) A STUDY OF COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF

CONCRETE WITH ARTIFICIAL CALCIUM CARBONATE AS REPLACEMENT PART
OF PORTLAND CEMENT. The aim of this research is to reveal artificial calcium
carbonate for replacement part of Portland cement. Percentage of artificial calcium
carbonate at this research is determined equal to 5% and 10% from cement weight. This
research started with modulus fineness test and water ratio for artificial calcium
carbonate, then continuously with the other material test. The next step made cylinder
concrete for concrete non artificial calcium carbonate and with artificial calcium
carbonate. Test of the concrete do with compressive test. The test conducted at concrete
age 3.7 and 28 days. The result showed that compressive strength of concrete without
artificial calcium carbonate equal 14.4166 MPa. While concrete with artificial calcium
carbonate 5% has compressive strength equal 16.7964 MPa. Then for concrete with
artificial calcium carbonate 10% has compressive strength equal 17.1050 MPa. So that

enabled if artificial calcium carbonate use as replacement part of Portland cement. From
this research also obtained graphic between calcium carbonate percentage and
compressive strength of concrete.

Dedi Herwanto (2012) ARTIFICIAL CALCIUM CARBONATE CONTENT
OPTIMIZATION AS PARTIAL PORTLAND CEMENT REPLACEMENT IN THE
COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE. The aim of this this final project is to
optimize artificial calcium carbonate content as partial of cement replacement on the
compressive strength of concrete.
The percentage of calcium carbonate levels in this study was 3%. This final project was
started with the grain fineness modulus and water content testing of artificial calcium
carbonate and then proceeds with testing of raw and fine agregate. The next step was the
manufacture of concrete cylinders test specimens 15 x 30 dimension with 9 cylinders,
for the concrete without artificial calcium carbonate and concrete made with artificial
calcium carbonate. There were 2 testing for the concrete which were Hammer Test and
compressive test. The tests were carried out at the time the concrete of 14, 21, and 28
days. The results showed that the compressive strength of concrete without artificial
calcium carbonate was 14.4166 MPa. While the concrete with 3%artificial calcium
carbonate has compressive strength of 14.537 MPa. Based on the correlation of the
quadratic equation from the previous data which were 3%, 5%, and 10%, for concrete
made with 15% artificial calcium carbonate, it was predicted with charts the concretes
compressive strength was 9.74 MPa. This final project showed that the concretes
compressive strength predicted at levels of 15% with a compressive strength data of
concrete made of artificial calcium carbonate content of 3%, 5%, and 10%. And
optimization of artificial calcium carbonate content of 7.6% predictable with 17.908
MPa compressive strength based on concrete mix between 3%, 5%, and 10% levels.
