daisy

Daisy came into the care of the BC SPCA Nelson Branch after her guardians
living arrangements changed and she was unable to stay with her. She
is a six-year-old, domestic longhair cat, with a gorgeous blue cream
tortoiseshell coat. Daisy is a calm, friendly girl with a lot of love to give.
She is sometimes playful, sometimes chatty and always adorable. Her
absolute favourite thing is to be brushed she would happily spend all
day on your lap being groomed. She may take a couple of days to settle
into her new home, but once she is feeling comfortable she is a sweet
natured companion. Daisy would do best in a quiet household with space
for her to sprawl out and relax. She gets along with other cats of similar
temperament and is very gentle with people. Due to her long coat she will
need regular grooming, which is also a great bonding activity with her. If
Daisy sounds like the companion for you, come meet her at the BC SPCA
Nelson Branch or call (250) 352-7178 for more information.

Bessie Wapp & Friends

Come To Town!

The annual Langham Guest Artist Series and the Slocan Lake Gallery Society will showcase one of the regions
favourite daughters in her acoustic quartet Bessie Wapp and
Friends. The Nelson-based quartet will kick off the Langhams series in Kaslo on October 24, and cross the summit
to play at Silvertons Memorial Hall on October 25th.
Both concerts start at 7:30 pm and admission is $18 at
the door. Silverton tickets are available only at the door.
In Kaslo advance tickets are at Willow Boutique & Sunnyside Naturals and at the door.
Its not easy to capture singer/accordion-player Bessie Wapps wide-ranging tastes in one music ensemble
but anythings possible with the fantastic players shes
gathered! Kiyo Elkuf (sax/bg vocals), Jesse Lee (bass/bg
vocals), and Marvin Walker (drums/bg vocals) are all
talented musicians with extensive international touring
experience to bring to Bessies folk, blues, singer/songwriter, traditional Eastern European, and jazz repertoire.
Bessies diverse tastes originated in shelves of LPs lining
the walls of the home she was raised in. Her mothers jazz,
classical, rock & roll, opera, & punk collection, and her
fathers blues & folk tastes made for a rich musical soundscape. As well, Bessies parents both play instruments and
sing. Many an evening was spent playing music around
the kitchen table.
Named Nelsons Cultural Ambassador for 2015, Bessie is
a seasoned performer known for touching hearts and getting toes tapping. She has performed extensively throughout North America and in Europe at such venues as The
Kennedy Centre (NYC), Zagreb Danceweek (Croatia), and
Festival Dete (Montreal). Last spring she starred in Black
Productions highly acclaimed Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Bellyfit In Kaslo

In 1999, I co-founded (with Emil Patenaude) and codirected (with Amanda Ruppe and Wendy Sutherland)
a locally based Bellydance inspired performance troupe
called the Kootenay Hipnotics. In our heyday (2000/01),
we were burgeoning on the scene with about a dozen
dancers and seven or eight musicians. With a grant from
the Columbia Basin Trust we were able to tour the region
providing great entertainment and teaching workshops.
Slowly times changed and troupe members went their
separate ways. One of these inspired young dancers was
Alice Bracegirdle, a name who is becoming increasingly
renowned in the fitness industry. In 2007 Alice took inspiration from our Bellydance co creation and, combined with

her fitness background and desire to support the health

and well being of women everywhere, she created Bellyfit.
Bellyfit is the worlds fastest growing holistic fitness system designed exclusively for women. Each class is a fusion
of easy to learn Belly Dance, African, Bhangra, and Bollywood cardio moves, followed by core training, stretching and light meditation, all in one transformational hour.
It seems weve come full circle and now after two years
of intensive training and collaboration with Alice, in Victoria, Im bringing Bellyfit back to Kaslo!
This unique group fitness class is accessible and fun for
everyone and there are no prerequisites as participants
can choose their levels within each class. That said, I will
be offering three distinct formats: Bellyfit Sage designed
for an older demographic, or women new to fitness or
returning after childbirth or convalescence. I am the codeveloper of this format so as you can imagine it is very
bellydance at a pace which allows for technical instruction
while still offering a great workout and improving core
strength, posture and flexibility.
Then there is an all ages class which is more traditional
Bellyfit high energy, aerobics dance fusion inspired and
guaranteed to get you sweating! Lastly the Youth Bellyfit
class has an upbeat more improvisational format.

Charet-Calles
To Read From
Memoir

Does one ever truly

recover from a wartime
experience? Its a question that underlines many
of the passages in Eloise Charet-Calles newly
published memoir, Never
Without Our Children
(Editions Bambou 2015).
She will read from her
gripping story at the Kaslo
Public Library on Tuesday, December 1 at 7 pm.
As a 23-year-old young woman, Eloise and her sister
Anna, then only 20, answered the call for help put out
by Naomi Bronsteins Montreal-based Families for Children charity. Leaving their home in rural Quebec, they
travelled to Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge takeover to care for war orphans. The books title derives
from the answer she and her sister gave Cambodian and
Canadian authorities when Phnom Penh fell to Khmer
forces in 1975. All foreign nationals were issued evacuation notices, but that didnt include the 50 or so orphans
in Anna and Eloises orphanage, dubbed Canada House.
The two young women simply refused to leave unless a
way could be found to take the orphans with them. At the
time, they were the subject of international news stories,
including one by CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite.
The international press in 1975 dubbed Canada House
An isle of love amidst a sea of despair. It was literally that, as
families fleeing the murderous rage of the Khmer Rouge,
who were wiping out entire villages, dropped babies into
the sisters arms on their way out of the country, knowing
they would be safe. When a recent Vancouver Sun article
reported on her book, Charet-Calles received a phone
call from Cliff Zacharias, the pilot who flew the Hercules aircraft that got the two sisters and their orphans from
Phnom Penh to Saigon. He told her that the evacuation
was the high point of his entire career as a pilot. Only
weeks later Saigon would fall the North Vietnamese, leading to panicked scenes like the famous one weve all seen
of Vietnamese hanging off US Air Force helicopters on
the roof of the American embassy.
Although Charet-Calles is a first-time author with this
book, she has a natural penchant as a storyteller that was
evident even in the first rough draft. Like any good storyteller, she knows how to balance tragedy with comedy,
and there are many light touches in the book that leave the
reader laughing out loud. You have to laugh so you dont
cry, she often says.

Selkirk College Capital Plan

Gets A Boost

With a focus on strengthening a skilled regional workforce, Columbia Power Corporation has invested in Selkirk Colleges major capital improvement project that will
enhance educational opportunities for students.
Earlier this week, Columbia Power President & CEO
Frank Wszelaki presented a $30,000 contribution towards
a multi-million dollar capital plan that will see major
renovations take place at Nelsons Silver King Campus
and the Castlegar Campus. Its the latest step in a partnership that has been key in providing a regional solution to
labour force demands.
The proposed improvements for the Silver King Campus
include a major renovation and equipment upgrade to the
shop areas, work on the classroom block, and the addition
of student common learning spaces. The project involves
bringing the facility up to current standards including use
of energy efficient heating and lighting, improving the
design of the shop classroom spaces, and incorporating
spaces for current and future programming.

Middle of photo L - R) Selkirk College Vice President of

College Services & CFO Gary Leier, Columbia Power Corporation President & CEO Frank Wszelaki and Selkirk College
President Angus Graeme. The trio were joined by some of the
Selkirk College alumni who now work at Columbia Power.
The capital campaign also includes a phased redevelopment of the student spaces, classrooms and equipment at Selkirk Colleges campus in Castlegar. It will
include a redesign of the main student area at the campus,
improved student and service spaces, and modern classrooms required by todays educators.
We celebrated the 50th birthday of the Silver King
Campus last fall and the facility is showing its age, says
Selkirk College President Angus Graeme. We will continue to train individuals for in-demand sectors of our
workforce, but this capital project is so important for our
future. We are extremely fortunate to have strong community partners like Columbia Power who continue to
show support for the future of Selkirk College.
The capital project has received support from Columbia
Basin Trust and other community partners in the last two
years. The Silver King renovation proposal is currently
before the provincial government who will be the primary
contributor to the project.
We remain confident that the Provincial Government
will sign off on this project soon, says Selkirk College Vice
President of College Services & CFO Gary Leier. Vital to
the success of this project is financial support from our
industry and business partners. Having Columbia Power
step forward to be part of it helps bring to light the importance of the end goals.
Partnering with Selkirk College to ensure local trades
students have access to modernized equipment was the
foundation for Columbia Powers financial contribution
to the college, says Wszelaki. In addition, Columbia
Power supports the college by offering hands-on field
training for students in programs like Recreation Fish &
Wildlife, Integrated Environmental Planning, Plant Operator and Engineering. We also take pride in providing
annual scholarships and offering summer employment
opportunities.
The Silver King Campus and Castlegar Campus capital
improvement project will provide $32 million in upgrades
to both facilities.

Columbia Basin
Trust Renews
Strategic
Priorities
Columbia Basin Trust
has updated its Columbia
Basin Management Plan
for 2016 to 2020, which
outlines how it will support Basin residents and
communities over the next
five years.
All of our activities are
driven by responding to
the priorities and needs
of Basin residents, said
Greg Deck, Columbia
Basin Trust Chair, Board
of Directors. Through
extensive discussions, we
have heard how we can best
support the region and the
issues we should focus on,
and are now moving ahead
with these ideas.
The Trust will continue
to use three methods of
supporting communities:
1) It will invest in opportunities that generate
financial returns to support its activities.
2) It will offer responsive granting programs
that empower residents
and communities to take
action on issues that are
important to them.
3) It will undertake proactive, longer-term initiatives that address specific
Basin-wide priorities.
It will also implement a
new method, in which it
will invest in opportunities
where financial return is
secondary to other positive
community impacts.
The public is also invited
to learn more at open
houses to be held in Cranbrook, Tuesday, October
20, Golden, Wednesday,
October 28, Nakusp,
Thursday, October 29 &
Castlegar, Friday, October
30. Or residents can join a
webinar. Find details at cbt.

LAW OFFICE

Presents

YOU AND THE LAW

CAN POLICE JUST

BUST INTO YOUR HOME?
Its 4:00 am, and your condo apartment
neighbour has cranked up the volume on
their stereo. The security guard has asked
them to turn it down. When that didnt
work, he called the police. They show up
and, once the door is answered, take a
step inside to have a word with the owner.
They see theres about 10 people inside.
The owner refuses to identify himself to
the police. After a minor altercation, he
tells the cops to leave so he can shut the
door. When they dont, he pushes one of
them in the shoulder. Hes arrested after
a minor scuffle and criminally charged
with mischief (playing loud music) and
assaulting police.
Effective police work? Police just doing
their job? Not really, though maybe you
cant help but sympathize with the cops
here or the long-suffering neighbours.
By the time the case came before an
appeal court, the police had dropped
the mischief charge. And the owner was
appealing his conviction of assault police
arguing the police had overstepped their
rights.
The court looked at what went on and
said some fundamental principles came
into play here. These might not jump out
at you at first glance. Thats why a good
criminal defence lawyer is always a good
idea if youre facing a criminal charge.
The defence argued that the expression
a mans home is his castle reflects a long
standing law. The cops had broken it and

trespassed by stepping into the condo

apartment uninvited. That was unlawful,
and so they werent in the course of
executing their duty when the physical
push of the police officer occurred. For
the charge of assault police to stick, that
key element (of being in execution of
their duty) was missing here, they argued.
The prosecution responded by arguing
that the police had "implied consent"
to enter. They were pursuing a criminal
investigation of mischief and had valid
safety concerns as to what would happen
if they left and the apartment door was
shut one of the occupants had left the
apartment and was standing behind them
in the hallway.
But the court agreed with the defence
and overturned the police assault
conviction. It accepted that the longstanding sanctity of home principle
came into play. Unless police have a
warrant, they can generally only come into
your home if invited (and have to leave if
you ask them to even if you let them in
at first). There are some exceptions to this
principle, but those didnt apply here.
This meant that the police had in
fact trespassed here, and the defence
succeeded. The prosecutions implied
consent argument also didnt wash that
rule means theres implied consent to go
up and knock on the door of a residence
(going through a garden gate to the front
door to knock, say), but it doesnt allow
going inside.

Stop The Trophy Hunt

Of Grizzly Bears

Many people became familiar with photographer Jim

Lawrences image of the grizzly bear standing on its hind
legs and looking through a camera, when it went viral and
caught the attention of the press. The photo is like the
poster child for a stop the trophy hunt of grizzly bears
campaign, says filmmaker Miriam Needoba whose short
film Eyes in the Forest: The Portraiture of Jim Lawrence, is
on a regional tour of the Kootenays this fall. The image
encapsulates our love of the wild and watching wildlife,
says Needoba The bear looks like a wildlife photographer
mirroring our own fascination, and its marvellous intelligence and curiosity is revealed.
The image has inspired Lawrence and Needoba to get
political, and so they have launched a petition to stop
the trophy hunt of grizzly bears in British Columbia, in
response to an offer by MLA Michelle Mungall to introduce
one in the Legislature. Online petitions are inadmissible
in the Legislature, so hard copies of names and signatures
are required, making collecting hundreds of thousands of
them a formidable task! says Needoba. So the artists are
calling on BC residents, businesses and organizations alike
to also get involved, and download and print out copies of
the petition and collect signatures and send them in. The
petition can be downloaded at www.smalltownfilms.com.
Or call 250-352-5905 to arrange to have some sent to you.
Trophy hunting is a gratuitous practice whereby the
carcass is never used, the head or pelt may be taken but
the meat is not eaten. It is also in conflict with the laws
of nature where by the largest, most robust animals are
targeted by the trophy hunter, and thus removed from the
gene pool in spite of a hereditary lineage that would otherwise make them dominate. Recent uproar over the killing
of Cecil the lion has shown that public consensus is against
trophy hunting, and according to Needoba, You dont
have to be from Zimbabwe to see that the economic value
of multitudes of wildlife-watching tourists is far greater
than that of one trophy-hunting dentist from America.
Lawrence and Needoba while on a regional tour have
been engaging audiences in a conversation about wildlife

and their habitat. Lawrence often sites a London Zoological Society report (ZSL) that suggests species populations
have halved in the last 40 years! Here in the Kootenays an
audience member recalls how fifty years ago he remembers
seeing porcupines everywhere, but he has not even seen one
in recent years. Large carnivores such as grizzly bears are
particularly susceptible to the impacts of human activity,
especially through loss of habitat and the obvious difficulties
co-existing with humans, and that is not even including the
impacts of climate change. With so much to contend with
already banning trophy hunting of grizzly bears just seems
like one small step in the right direction, says Needoba.
According to polls, around 90% of British Columbians
oppose the trophy hunt. So it shouldnt be that hard to get
enough signatures on this petition to make change. If you
oppose the trophy hunt please sign this petition!

Help Bats For Halloween

As Halloween approaches, images of scary, blood-sucking bats become common place. Since the goal of the Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) is to promote bat
conservation, this is the perfect time of year to counter
these bat myths and do something to help bats.
The conservation of bats in BC has always been important since over half the species in this province are considered at risk says Juliet Craig, Coordinating Biologist
for the KCBP. However, since the introduction of White
Nose Syndrome, a disease that is devastating bat populations where it has spread, bat conservation is more important than ever.
White Nose Syndrome (WNS) is a disease caused by an
introduced fungus that was first detected in a cave in New
York in 2006. Since it was discovered, it has spread to 26
states and five provinces in North America, decimating
bat populations along the way. An estimated six million
bats have died from this disease so far and the number
continues to climb.
Luckily White Nose Syndrome is not yet in BC continues Craig, But we are preparing for its arrival by raising awareness about bats, working with landowners who
have bats in buildings, enhancing bat habitat, and monitoring populations.
Building bat-houses is one way to encourage healthy bat
populations. With the decline of large trees and undisturbed rock features, some bat species have adapted to
using human-made structures, such as bat-houses. These
small boxes have several crevices inside that provide a safe,
dry habitat where bats can roost during summer months.

Bat-houses are particularly important for maternity

colonies where groups of female bats roost together to
have their pup during the summer states Craig. A welldesigned bat-house installed in a good location can provide a home for hundreds of bats.
Funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Valley
Local Conservation Fund, Habitat Stewardship Program,
and the Public Conservation Assistance Fund, the KCBP
provides educational programs on bats, conducts site visits to landowners with bats in buildings, and offers a program called Building Homes for Bats where they reimburse
the cost of materials to residents who build and install two
bat-houses on their property.
To find out more about the Building Homes for Bats
reimbursement program or to download plans for a bathouse, visit www.kootenaybats.com

KEEPING CONNECTED
As we move into the fall of the year, we start
to think about how to keep up the activity we
have been doing through the summer. During
the fall and winter, maintaining summer
activity levels can be difficult for seniors,
especially during inclement weather, snow
and ice. For a number of years the Keeping
Connected program has been taking place at
St Andrews United Church Hall every Tuesday
and Friday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 am.
We spend the first part walking around the
church and hall and then do sitting, standing
or walking exercises under the direction of a
leader. The exercises are designed to maintain
and improve range of motion, strength and
balance. Our goal is to prevent slips, trips and
broken hips and to keep us connected and
moving. The cost is $2 per session or $12 for
the season, until the end of April. Come join
us. You dont even have to be a senior, just
have a desire to keep connected and moving
during the winter.
The sessions will start on Tuesday, October
20th and then every Tuesday and Friday after
that except Friday, October 23. For further
information contact Mary Stickel at 250-3532936 or Elizabeth Scarlett 250-353-2563.
There will be similar sessions on Monday
afternoons at the Lardeau Valley Community
Hall in Meadow Creek. Contact Sandra Rempel 250-366-4263 for more information.
MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS
What do a semicolon tattoo, the phrase
To Write Love on Her Arms and cycling all
have in common? They are all social media
movements dedicated to inspire and encourage discussion about mental illness, recovery
and hope. At first glance, it is unclear how
these three things connect to mental illness.
The fact is, not many of us will take the time
to understand these social media movements
until we know why they matter.
In any given year, one in five people in Canada will experience a mental health problem
or illness, with a cost to the economy in excess
of $50 billion. Only one in three people who
experience a mental health problem will seek
out and receive treatment. Of the approximately 4,000 Canadians who die every year

as a result of suicide, many were confronting

a mental health problem or illness.
I urge you to take a moment to read some
of the personal stories being shared in connection with these movements. The stories
of struggle, recovery and hope are uniting
voices that often go unheard; messages like
theres no health without mental health
and you are not alone resonate powerfully.
Leveraging the conversation about reducing
the stigma of mental illness can be simple yet
inspiring. Project Semi-Colon uses a simple
semicolon symbol to carry a powerful message their website says that a semicolon is
used when an author couldve chosen to end
their sentence, but chose not to. The author is
you and the sentence is your life.
September 10th was World Suicide Prevention Day, an annual event to reduce stigma
and promote dialogue. This years theme was
Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and
Saving Lives. It serves as a call to action to
both individuals and organizations. We all
have a role to play in preventing suicide by
offering support; we can make a difference
and help save lives.

SEEMS THE BEATLES HAD IT RIGHT

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE
What is the most essential ingredient of a
fulfilling and healthy life? What are we all
searching for as we engage in the frenetic
pace of life? For many of us it is the feeling
of belonging.
Social scientists refer to this internal need
we all have to feel like we belong as social
connectedness. Strangely, the term sounds
awkward and kind of disjointed!
How can something so natural and essential
to a health-filled life sound so complicated
and unappealing? Perhaps its because we
have to be told by others that we need to
introduce this quality into our daily lives and
that makes us uncomfortable. Lets face it,
we already know we should be doing it but
its just not that easy and in some ways it

seems to be getting harder.

Our communities have evolved to embrace
cars and not people. Now we find we must
look to the past in order to find what was
good for us in the first place like walkable
neighbourhoods and access to nature.
The same can be said for connecting with
others. We now embrace technology and
independence, not togetherness. To feel truly
connected to others we may need to re-think
our social (or unsocial) habits and replace
them with meaningful face-to-face human
connection and frankly that can feel awkward, risky and unnatural. But it doesnt have
to be that way; we are designed for love. Just
ask the Beatles.
Social connectedness isnt as complicated
as it sounds. Its about inviting someone over
for morning coffee, going for a walk or looking for ways to help a neighbour or co-worker
in need. If its not that easy, it may simply
be that we have not exercised this muscle
recently. Perhaps its time to show people we
like them by using our voices, lending a real
hand and not just clicking a thumb!
There is a strong correlation between
social connection (theres that word again)
and physical health. According to the new
provincial guide developed by BC Healthy
Communities, belonging to social groups and
networks is just as important in predicting
health outcomes as diet and exercise.
Lets reintroduce friendliness, helpfulness,
cooperation, and interdependence into our
conversations and pastimes. Its good for our
health and its good for our communities.
