SKMM 4513
Semester 1 Session 2015/16
SCOPE
You are responsible to design the crane, support structures, hoisting mechanism and the transmission
system. (Not required to design of an eletrical and controller parts). All parts are modeled using parametric
and feature based modelling. Implementation of the design intent in deciding the modelling is a must. One
of the design intent is to allow variations in shape of the part without compromising the functional aspect of
the part.
DESIGN SPESIFICATION
Crane has to follow a set of guidelines:
Load capacity : 5-10 metric tons
Overall factory width : 15 meter
Overall factory height : 10 meter
Maximum Lifting height : 8 meter
Maximum hoisting speed : 1.5 meters/s
PROJECT METHODOLOGY

4.
Research on crane design & Standard Practice/Journal/Catalog/ Crane Design Standard - 10%
CAD Design and Modelling on: overall structure of the system - Shafting, Bearing , Bolting and
Welding and Gearing. Use your CAD knowledge to solve engineering problems: ie. Design Table,
Software Add-on (Weldment, FEA, Motions, ToolBox etc) and API VBA Programming) - 50%
Report Writing Format: Standard UGP Writing Format, Figure, Table, Discussion and Conclusion 20%
Engineering drawing - Assembly (Orthographic) and Isometric (CAD drawing and print in A3 Size)
- 20%
DELIVERABLE
Design details should include, but are not limited to, the following:
(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)
(e)
(f)
Total weight of crane (add 20% to account for features not considered).
Design of beams in crane span shape, maximum stress, and maximum deflection.
Design of hoist cables, drum, gear train, shaft, and motor.
Stress analyses of structural boom, welding, fasteners.
Buckling of support columns.
Specify material type for all components. Material property data (i.e. elastic modulus, yield
strength, ultimate strength, etc.) should be obtained from appropriate tables.
(g) Structural members should be sized to support the specified load with a safety factor ranging
from 2.0 to 4.0. Factors lower than 2.0 are unsafe, and factors higher than 4.0 are not optimized.
(h) Create assembly and isometric drawings of the crane (All drawings should be generated with a
computer.
(i) [IMPORTANT]: All softcopy on parts and report must be submitted ON-LINE (SolidWorks
part and assembly files, Word documents or PDF) to http://www.fkm.utm.my/~khairul/
SKMM4513.html and hardcopy of the report submitted in PRINTED copy.

A Table of Contents with sections 1 through 9.
1. Introduction : Objective, Scope and Design Methodology
2. Background Study/Design Selection
3. Design Description
4. Design Features/Parts
- Programming: discuss the algorithm and focuses on the design intent
- KINEMATICS/FEA methods and results: On the FEA model, focuses on the reasoning
behind setting the constraint of the model. On the result focuses on how to interpret the KINEMATICS/FEA results for design purposes.
