1. Why was the USSR concerned about the Marshall plan?

(2 Marks)
The Marshall plan, although provided to countries within
Europe, came with the agreement that the USA would be able
to control how money was to be spent. The increase in control
would enable greater influence by the capitalists.
It also made the USA look powerful and capitalism more
desirable, as they were able to provide aid with money to
provide for the recovery of others.
2. What were the causes of the Berlin crisis? (4 Marks)
After Bizonia was created in 1947, Stalin felt they would
develop further Economic reforms to improve the wellbeing of
Germany in the future. AS the French zone was added in April
1948, Stalin felt the agreements made at Potsdam were
broken.
Another cause was to prevent the emigration of workers with
high skill as this greatly reduced the total output of the
economy. The workers left as they felt that they would attain
better living standards in West Germany, further portraying
communism adopted in the East in a negative light.

workers emigrated to the West in search of a better standard of
living. Loss of labour labelled infectors. Almost 4,000,000 over
the period of hardship in East Berlin

Roosevelt had died on 12 April, succeeded by Harry Truman,
taking a tougher line against Stalin. By July 1945, USA
developed Atom Bomb without alerting Stalin, and so he felt
they were plotting against them.

Deviated away from the previously communist reforms, and
became more capitalist allowing less censorship and freedom
of speech.
Still remained communist and a part of the Warsaw Pact, as a
satellite state.

Reduced tensions that had previously arisen between the East
and West
Marked for some, the end of the Cold War and such
agreements
Unity amongst the population. 2 million people from East
Berlin alone visited West Berlin for a celebration after the wall
collapsed.
After 30 years, the economy of the East began to develop
becoming Westernised and achieving prosperity. Germany
supposedly became whole.
Change in relations

Invasion of Afghanistan brought dtente to an endUSA angered by


the way in which the USSR acted. Relationships disbanded. Some
said it was like a second cold war. Mujahdeen rebel group
supported by the US to overcome USSR.
