Overview of automotive industry in Indonesia.

Background
In 2010, automotive vehicles (which includes passenger and commercial vehicles) market was
brisker following the recovery of the world's economy from previous year's slump. Automotive
sales rose to 764,710 units in 2010 or an increase of 58.1% from 2009. Automotive sales in 2010 hit
a new record well above the previous record of 603,774 units in 2008.
The crisis in 2009 adversely affected the country's automotive industry. Based on a report issued by
the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) the country's automotive production
and sales shrank in 2009. Production fell to 464,816 units in 2009 from 600,628 units in 2008 and
sales dropped 19.9% to 483,548 units.
The decline in sales was partly caused by the falling value of the rupiah that caused an increase in
the price of cars, forcing many consumers to postpone or cancel plan to buy new cars.
In 2010, the condition improved and the country's automotive production and sales surged.
Automotive production rose 51.1 % to 702,508 units.
The cut in Bank Indonesia key rate to 6.5% in August 2009, the lowest since its introduction in July
2005, has contributed to the surge in automotive sales. In addition, automotive manufacturers and
sole agents have launched a program of interest subsidy that has helped boost sales.
The automotive market in the country is still dominated by Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV). MPVs are
more attractive than sedan cars in Indonesiaas MPVs are subject to a lower tax regime. In addition,
major brands such as Toyota Avanza, Daihatsu Xenia, Nissan Grand Livina and Suzuki APV offer
small engine capacity ranging from 1,000cc to 1,500cc which is deemed as more fuel efficient.
Larger carrying capacity of MPVs is also another pulling factor.
Structure of automotive industry
Characteristics of automotive vehicle industry in Indonesia
Automotive vehicle industry in Indonesia began to grow with the operation of a number of
Trademark Holding Sole Agents (ATPM) in the early 1970s under the decisions of the Industry
Minister No. 295/1982 and No. 428/1987. ATPM are national companies appointed by the
principal manufacturer to exclusively import, promote, distribute and maintain after sales service
within a specific jurisdiction.
The Government of Indonesia originally hoped ATPMs would become the embryo of the country's
automotive manufacturing industry through a process of transfer of technology using high local
content.
However after 30 years, the industry did not change from its original position as the assembling
industry still depended heavily on imports for components. There was little progress toward using
more local content to create a manufacturing industry.
The goal of developing a manufacturing industry was even blurred with the 1999 deregulation

which gave greater freedom for the import of automotive vehicles in Completely Built up (CBU)
form. The role of ATPM became irrelevant as many non-ATPMs imported automotive vehicles in
CBU form of which ATPMs originally held the monopoly in imports.
After the Government announced that relations between ATPM and their principals were based on
business principles without involvement of the government, some of the foreign principals decided
to take over control in production of automotive vehicles leaving the ATPM with the distribution
task in the domestic market.
Toyota Motor Corp. took over the assembling division of PT. Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) with TAM
becoming the distributor of Toyota in 2003. The manufacturing division was under PT. Toyota
Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), which is 95% owned by the principal Toyota Motor Corp.
Meanwhile, Suzuki Motor Corporation took over the production division in PT Indomobil Suzuki
International after injecting a fresh capital to increase its stake to 90% from 49% earlier with the
remaining 10% owned by PT Indomobil Sukses International Tbk.
Trademark holding sole agent (ATPM)
PT Astra International Tbk and PT Indomobil Sukses Internasional Tbk are the two largest
automotive companies dominating the automotive market in Indonesia. The two groups have
established cooperation's with a number of foreign principals to become ATPMs for several
brands in Indonesia.
The Astra Group is the ATPM for several automotive trademarks, bothAsian and European, namely
Toyota, Daihatsu, Isuzu, UD Trucks, Peugeot,BMW and Lexus. As sole agents for the seven
trademarks, Astra Group hasa 52.4% share of car market in Indonesia. Among the main
trademarkscontributing to Astra's control of the market include ToyotaAvanza, Innova, Rush,
Daihatsu Xenia, Terios, Grandmax and IsuzuPanther.
Similarly, the Indomobil Group is the ATPM for both Asian and European trademarks, namely
Nissan, Volvo, Volkswagen, Renault, Audi, Hino Trucks, Volvo Trucks, Renault Trucks, Suzuki, Great
Wall, Infiniti and Foton (light truck). Among the brands, Indomobil has a 17.3% share of car market
in Indonesia. Brands with major contribution to the total car sales by Indomobil in Indonesia include
Nissan Grand Livina, Suzuki APV and Suzuki Carry-Futura.
Other ATPMs outside the two large groups include among others, PT Ford Motor Indonesia for Ford
cars, PT GM Auto World Indonesia for Chevrolet and PT KIA Mobil Indonesia for Kia.
China automotive manufacturers have also begun to tap the domestic market aggressively. Apart
from Chery, there is Foton with two ATPMs--PT Indobuana Autoraya (Indomobil Group) for Foton
Light Trucks and PT Foton Mobilindo (Modern Group) for Foton buses, MPV and heavy duty
trucks.
Other Chinese automotive manufactures include Geely, a Chinese top car maker entering Indonesia
towards the end of 2010, with PT Geely Mobil Indonesia as its ATPM; and Great Wall (Indomobil
Group), which made its appearance in the country more recently offering commercial vehicles
through PT Wahana Inti Central Mobilindo (Indomobil Group)
There are two main categories of automotive products in Indonesia--passenger and commercial
vehicles. Passenger vehicles include Sedan, MPV, SUV, Hatchback 4x2 and SUV 4x4 and each could

be divided further by engine capacity.

Commercial vehicles consist of three types--Buses, Pick Ups/Trucks and Double Cabin 4x2/4x4 each
categorized by Gross Vehicle Weight.
Production capacity
Some ATPMs still have double functions--as producer and distributor, but some have been split into
manufacturing company and marketing company such as in the case of PT Toyota Astra Motor,
which now handles only sales with the manufacturing division taken over by PT Toyota Motor
Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) since July 2003. TMMI is 95% owned by Toyota Motor
Corporation and 5% by PT Astra Internasional.
Meanwhile, Suzuki Motor Corporation has also increase its stake in PT Indomobil Suzuki
International which is the ATPM for Suzuki in Indonesia. PT Indomobil Suzuki International now
handles the manufacturing division and distribution is handled by PT Indomobil
Niaga International.
Some ATPM have no assembling facility such as PT Tjahja Sakti Motor which is the sole agent for
BMW, PT Astra France Motor for Peugeot, PT Foton Mobilindo for Foton, etc. Their automotive
vehicles are assembled by other companies like PT Gaya Motor which is not an ATPM or by
other ATPMs as affiliate in the same company group.
Toyota Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) has the largest production capacity among the
automotive manufacturers in the country with production capacity of 170,000 units/year in 2010.
PT. Astra Daihatsu Motor and Nissan Motor Company have production capacity of
143,000 units/year and 52,000 units/year respectively.
Production up rapidly in 2011
In 2010, the country's production of automotive vehicles rose fast to follow the global and domestic
economic recovery. Consumers who had postponed plans to buy new automotive vehicle in 2009
began to buy in 2010. The growing demand boosted production that surged 51.1% to 702,508 units
in 2010.
Considerable increase in production was recorded in almost all automotive vehicles in all categories
in 2010. The MPV / SUV / Hatchback 4x2 category continued to lead in production which recorded
477,252 units out of a total of 702,508 units. Automotive production in 2011 is growing fast with
production in January-April 2011 reaching 264,364
Sales in 2011 expected to exceed 2010
Automotive sales surged in 2010, hitting a new record at 764,710 units, after a sharp 19.9% fall to
483,548 units in 2009 from 603,774 units in 2008. The increase was partly attributable to the steady
cut of Bank Indonesia's key rate (BI rate) to 6.5%. The interest subsidy program offered by
automotive industry players also contributed to revival of the market.
In 2010, sales of MPV and SUV 4x2 types of automotive accounted for 504,510 units of the total
automotive sales in the country with Pick Ups/Trucks contributing 204,654 units.
An automotive sale in 2011 is growing fast. As at end of April 2011, sales reached 37.5% of total

sales in 2010.
Tight competition in sales early 2011
In 2011, automotive market remained brisk. The economic growth (which exceeded 6% in 2010),
the strengthening of the rupiah against the US dollar and relatively low interest rate are factors
driving sales since the start of 2011. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Hatta Rajasa, said
the faster economic growth in the first three months of 2011, and indicated that the purchasing
power of the people remained strong. According to the Central Statistic Agency (BPS),
the country's economy expanded 6.5% in the first quarter of this year. Improved purchasing power
of the people contributed to increase in car sales in the first quarter of the year.
Toyota, Daihatsu and Nissan are among the best selling brands in March 2011. Toyota maintained
the largest market share spearheaded by Avanza, Innova, Yaris and Rush. Daihatsu came up with
Xenia and Terios, and Nissan with Grand Livina and Nissan March, a new comer in the Hatchback
market, showed an impressive growth in sales .
Data from Gaikindo showed that in March, Daihatsu Xenia was relegated by Kijang Innova in sales.
Sales of Kijang Innova reached 5,293 units against Daihatsu Xenia 4,681 units. Toyota Avanza
maintained strong lead with sales sreaching 16,993 units.
Sales of Xenia in February were 5,018 units, down from 6,619 units in January. Meanwhile, sales of
Kijang Innova reached 5,293 units in March, or a significant increase from 4,012 units in February
after sliding from 5,158 units in January.
Noteworthy was the sharp growth recorded in the sales of Nissan Grand Livina in March 2011
pushing it up to the top four from the top six among its classes in February with sales of 2,552 units,
pushing aside Suzuki APV which had sales of 2,309 units.
Nissan Grand Livina, which entered the Indonesian market in 2007 remained the star performer for
Nissan in the MPV market this year. In 2010 its sales totaled 22,560 units.
Hoping to grab a larger share of the market in 2011, Nissan came up with a face lift for Grand
Livina, expecting to post sales of 2,000 units per month. Nissan also offers Nissan X-Trail to remain
competitive in the SUV market in Indonesia. In 2010, sales of Nissan X trail reached 4,682 units.
Nissan recently launched Nissan March, which made its first appearance in the Indonesian market
in December 2010, to maintain lead in the hatchback market. For 1st quarter 2011, sales for Nissan
March reached 4,894 units or 26% of the Hatchback segment in Indonesia.
In the first quarter of 2010, sales of Honda cars reached 13,364 units, as compared to 13,679 units
in the same period in 2011. Sales of Honda Jazz reached 4,674 units or 25% market share in the
hatchback segment
Honda Freed, a new star performer of Honda, expected to push up the total sales of Honda car in
the country. In March 2011, sales of Honda Freed reached 1,454 units, up 58% from the previous
month of only 915 units. Previously Honda had relied more on its CRV model, the sales of which
reached 1,741 units in March 2011.
Market dominated by MPV

Seven seat MPV model are the best sellers in Indonesia based on a number of factors--lower in price
due to the tax regime, more fuel efficient and larger in seat capacity.
Almost all ATPMs in Indonesia have a share in the MPV automotive market. TAM still leads in the
MPV car market spearheaded by its Toyota Kijang, followed by Toyota Avanza, and Daihatsu Xenia,
which are produced in cooperation with affiliate Astra Daihatsu Motors (ADM).
Nissan Grand Livina has contributed significantly to increase in the domination of MPV in the
country's automotive market. A sale of Grand Livina has seen good growth and it is close to
becoming one of the top 3 brands. Meanwhile, Suzuki relies on its APV type to keep
market foothold in the country and Isuzu still relies on Isuzu Panther in the market of medium MPV
competing with Kijang Innova.
A number of brands entered the market with the luxurious full size type like Toyota Alphard, Nissan
Elgrand and VW Caravelle although they have managed to grab only a small share of the automotive
market.
Apart from MPVs, SUVs have also managed to attract many buyers Almost all brands have their
respective SUV model.
Domestic sales in 2010 were dominated by MPV and SUV with total sales of 508,147 units or a
market share of 66.5% in the country.
Toyota maintains strong lead in automotive market
Toyota
Toyota is still the market leader with total sales of 280,680 units in 2010, or a market share of
36.7% in Indonesia.
Toyota Avanza was the largest contribution to total sales with 141,799. Toyota Innova also
contributed strongly with sales of 53,824 units, Toyota Rush with 18,420 units and Toyota Yaris with
16,979 units.
Daihatsu
Daihatsu has the second largest market share of 15.5% in 2010 with sales of 118,591 units.
Daihatsu Xenia was the largest contributor with sales of 65,901 units, followed by Daihatsu Terios
with sales of 16,483 units.
Mitsubishi
PT Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian Motors (KTB), the ATPM for Mitsubishi in Indonesia recorded sales of
106,483 units in 2010. Mitsubishi has succeeded in retaining the largest share in the market of
commercial automotive vehicles such as Pick-Ups and Trucks.
Honda
PT Honda Prospect Motor (HPM), the ATPM for Honda recorded sales of 61,336 units in 2010 with
additional sales in exports of 4,200 units of Honda Freed to other Asean countries including
Thailand, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.

Honda Jazz is its largest contributor with sales totaling 22,560 units in 2010. Honda CR-V also
contributed a substantial portion with sales totaling 16,961 units in 2010.
Suzuki
PT. Suzuki Indomobil Sales (SIS) recorded sales of Suzuki cars totaling 71,210 units in 2010 or an
increase of 59.3% from 44,689 units in 2009.
Suzuki continues to concentrate more on lower segment of the market spearheaded by APV and
small automotive vehicles like Karimun Estilo and Swift.
In 2011, PT. SIS plans to come up with a new product named Suzuki Splash to go along with Swift
and Karimun Estilo in the Hatchback market segment with a selling price of Rp150 million. This
Hatchback is imported in CBU form from India and is priced higher compared with Karimun Estilo's
Rp 127 million.
Nissan
PT Nissan Motor Indonesia (NMI) reported sales of Nissan automotives vehicles at a record high in
2010 with sales of 37,542 units, up 75.1% from the previous year. Sales of Nissan automotives
were spearheaded by its Livina model with sales of 22,560 units. Other Nissan products are Nissan
X-Trail and the new Nissan March (Hatchback)
In addition to Livina models of Livina XR, Livina X-Gear, Grand Livina, Grand Livina Ultimate and
Grand Livina Higway Star, PT NMI also has Nissan X-Trail (SUV), Nissan Serena (MPV), Frontier
Navara (double cab), Nissan Latio (hatchback), Nissan New Teana (sedan) and its latest Hatchback
product Nissan March.
In three successive months from January to March, 2011 Nissan March led in sales with the
Hatchback segment. Based on Gaikindo data, since its launch in December 2010 until March 2011,
sales of Nissan March totaled 4,894 units while Suzuki Splash sales totaled 1,609 units and Suzuki
Karimun Estilo totaled 1,118 units.
Sales of Nissan automotive vehicles in 2011 are forecasted to rise again with new MPV products
such as Nissan Elgrand and Nissan Juke.
Exports growing in 2011
Generally, Indonesia's exports of automotive products in early 2011 showed a significant increase
compared to a year earlier. Exports have exceeded imports in number in the past two years. The
growing exports followed the increase in the country's production capacity.
M. Rusdi Sudirman, the general chairman of the Association of the Indonesian Motor Vehicle
Industries, said Indonesia ranks third among automotive market in Asean after Thailand and
Malaysia. The country has become a net exporter of cars.
In 2007, exports of vehicles in CBU form totaled 60,267 units. The exports continued to rise in the
following years excepting in 2009 when exports fell as a result of the global financial crisis. In
2010, exports of vehicles in CBU totaled 85,796 units. In the first half of 2011, exports already
reached 50,002 units.

In the first half of the year car exports were relatively stable despite a decline in April and May as a
result of the tsunami in Japan. A number of major Japanese car makers in Indonesia earlier
planned exports to that country.
Car exports by Indonesia to various countries in the world have been dominated by Japanese
brands--Toyota, Daihatsu and Suzuki.
Toyota Indonesia, the largest exporter suffered a setback with exports shrinking 51.7% to 6,740
units in he second quarter of 2011 compared with 13,973 units in the same period last year.
However, cumulatively in the first half of the year, exports by Toyota Indonesia rose 46.9% to
26,050 units, from 17,731 units.
PT Astral Daihatsu Motor (ADM) was also hit hard by the impact of tsunami. Exports of Daihatsu
Granmax to Japan were postponed. In 2010, ADM exported 16,422 units of Granmax.
PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales (SIS) fared better as its exports have been mainly to non Japan countries
including Latin America, Middle East and Thailand, dominated by Suzuki APV.
Car exports in 2010 were still dominated by Toyota which recorded exports totaling 45,114 units,
followed by Daihatsu with exports of 18,886 units and Suzuki 18,500 units.
Based on data available from PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), which assembles
Toyota cars in Indonesia, Fortuner cars accounted for 39.3% or 10,251 units of its total exports in
2010, followed by Innova totaling 9,284 units, Avanza 5,087 unit, and Rush 1,428 units.
TMMIN sets higher export target by 20$-30% in 2011 from last year's 45,126 units. Its main export
destinations are ASEAN, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria,
South Africa, Tahiti, Nigeria, Mauritius, Pakistan, and Mexico
Imports of cars in CBO form rise again
According to data at Gaikindo, imports of cars in CBU (completely built up) form shrank 55% in
2009 to 32,678 units from 72,646 units in the previous year. The decline was a result of the global
financial crisis as well as weak demand on the domestic market especially for sedan cars. Imports
have been dominated by sedan cars. Many domestic consumers were interested in multipurpose
vehicles (MPV).
In 2010, imports of cars in CBU forms began to rise again reaching 76,520 units with the recovery
of the global economy including domestic market. In addition, imports rose as a result of a cut in the
import duty.
A regulation of the finance minister No 241 of 2010 on goods classification and import duties on 22
December 2010 reduced the import duties on vehicles by 510 percentage points
The import duty on sedan cars in CBU form was reduced from 50% to 45% effective in January
2011. The import duty on MPV 4x2 in CBU form was reduced to 40% from 45%. Imports of MPV of
the premium class are expected to increase in 2011 for rich consumers.
So far cars imported in CBU form are only those not yet produced domestically. All types of sedan
cars have been imported in CBU form from Thailand. Car imports into Indonesia are dominated by
Thailand, South Korea, Japan, China, Malaysia, and a number of European countries.

The market of luxurious car with engine capacity of more than 3,000 cc is dominated by Japanese
brands. No local factory produces car with engine capacity of more than 3,000 cc.
PT. Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), a producer of Toyota cars in the country imports growing number of
luxurious Toyota cars with cylindrical capacity of more than 3,000 cc from its principal in Japan. In
mid 2008, TAM imported Toyota Alphard and Harrier from Japan into Indonesia. Previously imports
have been made only by general importers.
In 2009, TAM, reported a surge in sales of imported cars. Its sales of Corolla Altis rose from 105
units in September to 227 units. Its sales of Vios and Limo imported from Thailand totaled 938
units, up from 811 units in September. A surge was also recorded in sales of Toyota Camry, from
105 units to 227 units. Increase in the sales of cars in CBU form followed shortage in supply of
Camry, Corolla, Limo and Yaris several months previously.
PT Nissan Motor Indonesia (NMI) is expanding market to premium segment after it has become a
sole agent for Infiniti, a brand of Nissan's premium product. Infinity cars started to enter
the domestic market in March 2011 offering models of FX (SUV), M (sedan) and G (coupe), with
Sole retailer PT Wahana Wirawan. In the first phase sales were only in Jakarta.
Units will be imported in CBU form from Japan utilizing the facility provided under the IndonesiaJapan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJ-EPA). The cars with engine capacity of more than 3,000
cc will be slapped with an import duty of 4% reduced from 6% in 2010. In 2012, the import duty
will be 0%. The price is cheaper than other cars in its class.
In 2010, car imports in CBU form rose to 76,250 units, up from 32,678 units in 2009.
Interest growing in investment in automotive industry in 2011 in Indonesia
Investors from 8 countries plan to invest a total of Rp 8.3 trillion in the automotive industry which
are expected to be implemented in 2011. The projects would create 7,140 jobs.
Deputy Chief of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Teuku Otman Rasyid said so
far 18 new investors from the 8 countries have indicated interest in investing in the automotive
industry.
They plan to build new factories in Indonesia producing automotive components. Japanese investors
initiated the largest investment. One of them plans to invest up to Rp 6.5 trillion to produce machine
tools, cover cylinder heads and timing chain covers. The factory is to be built in Karawang, West
Java and it will create 3,437 jobs.
Another Japanese investor plans to produce components and piston spare parts for turbine engine
machine with an investment of US$ 13,340,000. The factory is to be built in Bogor, West Java and
is expected to create 586 jobs. Investors from Japan and Singapore will cooperate to produce
compressors and valves with a capacity of 1.6 million units. The project will cost around Rp 15
billion to build a facility in Bekasi, West Java, and is expected to create 500 jobs.
Other Japanese investors plans to produce automotive accessories, bearings and other automotive
components, and electronic components with locations in Bekasi, West Java, Tangerang, Banten and
Surabaya, East Java.
Some of Japanese investors plan to team up with other foreign investors such as from Singapore and

the United States and local investors.

Meanwhile, a local investor planned to invest Rp 43.1 billion to produce automotive components and
spare parts. The investor plans to build its factory in Bekasi and the factory is expected to create
500 jobs.
A Chinese investor plans to build a component plant with an investment of US$300,000 in Bekasi
that is expected to create 63 jobs.
Government policy
The Government plans to ban private automotive vehicles from using subsidized oil fuel (BBM) and
the implementation of progressive taxation on automotives are feared to put a brake on sales of
automotives in 2011. Industrialists, however, remain optimistic that sales will continue to scale up
in 2011.
The Government plans to ban private automotive vehicles from using subsidized BBM, premium
gasoline and automotive diesel oil (ADO) in 2011. The regulation is to be implemented through
phases. Starting from the Greater Jakarta area followed by other regions in Java, and Bali and other
Indonesian regions, Implementation of the regulation was to start in March 2011 in the Greater
Jakarta area to be followed by other regions in Java, and Bali and other Indonesian regions.
The subsidy cut constituted an implementation of the Law No. 10/2010 on 2011 state budget which
requires the Government to regulate the use of subsidized oil fuel (BBM) by phases. Based on the
2011 state budget, the quota of subsidized BBM is 38.6 million kiloliters.
Gaikindo has accepted the regulation. Johnny Darmawan, a chairman of Gaikindo, however, asked
the Government to be more prudent by not implementing the regulation at the same time with the
imposition of the progressive taxation system.
Mr. Darmawan said the taxation issue would be a negative factor for the growth of automotive
industry. The positive factors are stable foreign exchange rate, interest rate and increase in
economic growth. The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) said that
the automotive industry will be one of the economic growth drivers in 2011.
The transportation and communications sector will continue to chalk up the highest growth. In
2011, the sector is forecast to grow 13.0%-14.3%.
Expansion of sales networks
PT Honda Prospect Motor (HPM) plans to expand its distribution networks by establishing a number
of new dealers in 2011. The company plans to have 17 new dealers to support its marketing drives
in 2011.
Around Rp 16 billion will be needed to establish a new dealer or around Rp 272 billion for 17
dealers.
The expansion of the distribution networks is expected to boost sales and allow the company to fully
utilize its capacity of 50,000 units of cars a year.
Currently HPM operate in 2.5 shifts to be able to serve growing orders in waiting list for CR-V and

Jazz.
Meanwhile, PT Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) will have 25 new dealers until the end of this year
bringing the number of its dealers to 168 units. Suparno Djasmin, the chief executive officer of PT
Astra International Tbk (AI) Daihatsu Sales Operation, said opening a new unit of dealer will cost
around Rp 10 billion.
PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales (SIS) the ATPM for Suzuki automotives in Indonesia has opened a new
sales outlet Suzuki Armada of Musi branch in Central Jakarta.
The network is expanding in cooperation with a partner PT Armada Perkasa Mobilindo (APM) of the
New Armada Group. Suzuki Armada of Musi branch is the 13th sales (1S) outlet of SIS in the
Greater Jakarta area and the 70th across the country.
Yoshiji Terada, the president of SIS said currently the marketing network of Suzuki is supported by
131 outlets of sales, spare part and service (3S). In total, SIS has 201 outlets including 1S and 3S in
2011.
Prices.
The cut in import duties on car parts and cars in CBU from in 2011 will not immediately result in a
decline in car selling prices of cars in CBU form and CKD form as it came at the same time with an
increase in the fee for the transfer of car ownership (BBN) and taxes on motor vehicles.
The plan to ban private cars from using subsidized BBM on January 1, 2011 and the increase in the
price of non subsidized BBM on May 1, 2011 forced producers and ATPM to think twice to cut the
prices in 2011.
The regulation of the finance minister No. 241/PMK.011/2010 (PMK 241) cut the import duty on
CBU automotive vehicles from 50% to 40% and the import duty on parts for the production CKD to
10% from 15% earlier.
A chairman of Gaikindo Jongkie Sugiarto said the cut in the import duties would not have much
effect as the country's automotive industry has a strong foundation.
Marketing director of Kia Mobil Indonesia (KMI) Hartanto Sukmono said the impact of tax on
capital goods is insignificant compared to the impact of an increase in the sales tax on automotive.
KMI produces KIA cars in its factory in Pulogadung with 90% of components imported from South
Korea and other countries.
Amelia Tjandra, the marketing director of Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) said the rise and fall of
import duties have little effect on the price of automotives produced by ADM as most of their
components are locally produced. Local components make up almost 85% of the components of
ADM cars, therefore, an increase or a cut in import duties would have little effect on its selling
prices.
A number of producers among ATPMs have raised their selling prices in early 2011. The price of
Toyota Avanza was raised by Rp 2.5 million--Rp 3.25 million each and the price of Toyota Innova
increased by Rp 4 million--Rp 8 million.

The prices of Daihatsu Xenia, one of the best selling brand, rose Rp 2 million-Rp 2.5 million to Rp
115 million--Rp150 million; the price of Honda Jazz increased Rp 4 million--Rp 5 million to
Rp 198.5million--Rp 224 million and price of Nissan Grand Livina rose Rp 2million--Rp 4 million to
Rp 169,5 million--Rp 239 million.
Prospects and Conclusion
The automotive sector has become a major sector of the Indonesian economy. Amid the global
financial crisis, the sector continued to grow, which has help to prop up the country's sagging
manufacturing sector. GDP per capita in Indonesia has seen double-digit growth over the past 5
years and the trend is expected to continue over the next 3 years.
In the second semester of 2009, the country's automotive industry began to recover from the impact
of the devastating crisis that started in 2008. In 2009, automotive sales shrank before surging back
in 2010 to hit an all time record in sales.
Automotive sales in Indonesia are dominated by passenger vehicles, particularly in the MPV type
segment. Passenger vehicles contributed 75% to the country's total automotive sales with
commercial cars accounting for the rest. In total, automotive sales in Indonesia are dominated by
MPV. Toyota has maintained its lead in the market among the brands with a market share of 36.7%
in 2010, followed by Daihatsu and Mitsubishi, with market shares of 15.5% and 13.9%
respectively. Eventhough Mitsubishi is not the major player on passenger cars market, but it
dominated the commercial cars market through its brands, Mitsubishi L300, Colt Diesel and Fuso.
In 2011, automotive sales are forecasted to grow further in the country. In the first nine months of
2010, Indonesia and Thailand had a market share of 30% each in the Asean market with Malaysia
having a market share of 24.9%. Thailand has been the market leader so far.
Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia are by far the main automotive manufacturer and largest market
in Asean.
The keen interest shown by Chinese automotive manufacturer such as Foton, Geely, Great Wall and
Chery, which made its appearance earlier in Indonesia, indicated that the country's automotive
industry may draw more investors. China apparently has learned from the failure suffered several
years ago by its motorcycle industry on producing poor quality into the country. All the Chinese
automakers entering the market in Indonesia are big companies who have good reputation not only
in China but also in a number of other countries.
Partnership with large company groups such as Indomobil Group in the country indicates that
Chinese automotive products have been accepted by the market in the country.
The new tax regulation and BBM subsidy policy may put a brake on the fast growing automotives
industry, but high growth is still expected in the coming years.
The quake triggered tsunami destroying big factories including automotive component factories in
Japan is feared to cause a setback as the country's automotive industry still depends much on
imports from Japan for certain types of main components. Toyota already announced that
production might be cut by 50% all over the world.
