Bachelor of Mass Media (B.M.M.

)
This is a course introduced from the academic year 2000-2001, by the University of Mumbai. It has been
designed to provide students with a firm grounding in communication skills. It aims to develop an ability
for critical thinking and creativity and to give the students an opportunity to combine the theoretical
curriculum with practical applications, through detailed research, lucid writing skills, oral presentation skills
and a mastery of various mass communications media in our global information age.

Students who have passed the H.S.C. examination in Arts, Science or Commerce, are eligible to apply for
this course.

Like the B.M.S. course, this is also a three-year degree course with six semesters. The areas of
specialization in the third year are: Advertising and Journalism. During the second year, the students
receive on-the-job training through Internship. Besides this, Group Discussions, Seminars and Field
Visits will be conducted during the course of 3 years.

THE SELECTION PROCESS
A candidate, for being eligible for admission to the B.M.M. degree course shall have passed XII std.
Examination conducted by the Maharashtra State Board of Higher Secondary Education or any
examination recognized as equivalent thereto at one and the same sitting and should have secured not
less than 60% marks in case of students belonging to the General Category, not less than 55% in the
case of students belonging to the Minority category and not less than 50% marks in the case of students
belonging to Reserved Category.
Applications for admission to the First Year BMM will have to be done through an online system available
on our website at www.xaviers.edu on the Homepage, from the 1st of May to the 1 st of June 2015.Please

read the Notice on the Website Homepage for more details. The actual admissions will begin only after
the declaration of results of the XII in Mumbai.
Students passing the H.S.C. or any other examination conducted by Boards/Universities outside
Maharashtra State, should apply to the college for a provisional eligibility certificate. To apply for this one
has to display the original Mark sheet at the College office, along with 2 photocopies of the same. For
confirmation of the eligibility, students should submit to the College Office, before the close of the first
Semester, the Statement of Marks, the Passing Certificate and the Migration Certificate.
At the time of admission the student must submit the following documents in original along with duly
attested photocopies.
1. H.S.C. Marksheet
2. Baptism Certificate (For the Minority community - Christians)
3. Caste Certificate (if applicable)
4. Documentary Evidence regarding special category status:
Special Category consists of:
Wards of Transferred State/Central Govt. and Pvt. Sector employees, wards of employees of Defence
Dept./ex-service personnel, wards of Freedom Fighters, physically handicapped candidates, and students
who have met with accidents.
AWARD WINNERS at the District/State/National Level in Sports or cultural activities.
The total fees, including deposit and laboratory fees, as prescribed by the MumbaiUniversity, are as
follows:

Note: The Reserved Category Candidates (i.e. SC,ST,VJNT,DT,SBC & OBC) will be entitled to exemption
of certain fees as prescribed by the Government, subject to submission of necessary documents along
with the application form, if found eligible for such concession.

SCHEME OF EXAMINATION FOR BMS & BMM

i)The examination shall be conducted at the end of each Semester.


ii) A theory paper shall carry 100 marks. The evaluation of the performance of the students in theory
papers shall be on the basis of both internal assessment (40%) and semester examination (60%).
Internal evaluation shall be on the basis of class assignment, group discussions, seminar attendance etc.
The Semester end examination shall be held at the end of each Semester and shall be of 2hours
duration.
iii)The responsibility of evaluation during the 6 Semesters shall rest with the Autonomous College
iv)The evaluation of Projects I & II shall be carried out by the examiners appointed by the College
inclusive of viva-voce examination. The project reports shall be assessed for 60% of the total marks while
the viva-voce examination shall carry 40% of the marks.
