Proportionallimit
Thegreateststressatwhichamaterialiscapableofsustainingtheappliedloadwithoutdeviatingfromtheproportionalityofstresstostrain.

Ultimatestrength(tensile)
Themaximumstressamaterialwithstandswhensubjectedtoanappliedload.Dividingtheloadatfailurebytheoriginalcrosssectionalarea
determinesthevalue.
Elasticlimit
Thepointonthestressstraincurvebeyondwhichthematerialpermanentlydeformsafterremovingtheload.
Yieldstrength
Pointatwhichmaterialexceedstheelasticlimitandwillnotreturntoitsoriginshapeorlengthifthestressisremoved.Thisvalueisdeterminedby
evaluatingastressstraindiagramproducedduringatensiletest.

Poisson'sratioisadimensionlessconstantusedforstressanddeflectionanalysisofstructuressuchasbeams,plates,shellsandrotatingdiscs.
Bendingstress
Whenbendingapieceofmetal,onesurfaceofthematerialstretchesintensionwhiletheoppositesurfacecompresses.Itfollowsthatthereisalineor
regionofzerostressbetweenthetwosurfaces,calledtheneutralaxis.Makethefollowingassumptionsinsimplebendingtheory:
