District to offer
required civics test
a year early
The Germantown School District is getting a one-year jump on a civic exam that
students are now required to take as a result
of the state budget bill approved over the
summer.
A provision in Wisconsin Act 55 requires
that students will have to pass a civics test
to graduate from high school beginning in
the 2016-17 school year. The test will
include questions on items such as the
United States Constitution, the system of
government and American history, according to information provided by Germantown
School District staff to the School Board.
The civics test is comprised of 100 questions
which are identical to the 100 questions
that may be asked of an individual applying
for US Citizenship.
Students may re-take the test until
achieving a passing score. Students with an
Individualized Education Plan (IEP) are
required to take the test but their graduation is not conditioned on them passing the
test.

learning, told the School Board Oct. 12 that

habitat restoration project areas to offset the impact of invasive species and

safe and if it is better than the deep cleanings I
have been getting for years?
Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsed
laser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2
laser is the most widely studied laser on the
market today with the most University
supported articles outlining their safety and
effectiveness. I can tell you that lasers are
wonderful tools in dentistry if they are used
correctly. The ADA Council on Scientific
Affairs has recently published a position paper
on lasers and how they are used in dentistry.
Some of the salient points of their paper are as
follows:
There are currently more than twenty
cleared indications for use for dental lasers in
the United States.
According to the ADA position paper: The
dental literature indicates that when lasers are
used as an adjunct to meticulous root planing,
mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., the
intentional removal of the epithelial lining of
the sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefit
beyond scaling and root planing alone with
respect to gain of the periodontal attachment.
Additional clinical data from properly
designed clinical trials with adequate sample
sizes are still required before it can be known to
what extent LANAP (Laser assisted new
attachment procedures) are safe and effective
across the spectrum of patients with chronic
periodontitis.
So while lasers can be used for removing
lesions, performing frenectemies (removing
tissue that holds tongues or lips down) and
many other soft tissue applications it has not
been found to definitively treat gum disease. If

Survey: Germantown residents like parks, wary of apartments

Germantown residents like the

quality of life in their community but
are wary of more multi-family development, according to a survey that was
conducted earlier this year.
The survey was conducted by the
village through SurveyMonkey as part
of an update for its 2020
Comprehensive SmartGrowth Land Use
and Outdoor Recreation plans, with
results coming in Feb. 15. The survey
was mentioned during recent discussion about a rezoning request in the
village's Main Street area that would
have allowed for an apartment complex (the rezoning request was rejected by the Village Board).
In the survey residents were given
several options to a question asking
about what type of housing the village
should allow. According to the survey,
32.19 percent of respondents (424

responses) said they would "somewhat
discourage" apartments while 40.02
percent (527 responses) said they
would "strongly discourage" apartments. Only 6.91 percent (91) of
respondents said they would somewhat
encourage while 2.35 percent (31) of
respondents said they would strongly
encourage apartment development.
The largest support housing
options came for single family homes,
with 40.15 percent (528) of respondents stating they would somewhat
encourage and 38.62 percent (508) of
respondents indicating they would
strongly encourage single family
homes.
Among other development related
questions:
52.24 percent of respondents
(722 responses) said they were "somewhat satisfied" with how the village

indicated that they supported having
existing undeveloped farmland and
other agricultural land be allowed to
be developed in a way "that preserves
the rural character."
45.85 percent (613 responses) of
residents indicated that more conservation subdivisions should be allowed
to developed.
On a question asking respondents
to describe the quality of village parks,
44.37 percent (642 responses) said
they were "very satisfied," 38.29 percent (554) said they were "somewhat
satisfied," 3.80 percent (55 responses)
said they were "somewhat disappointed" while .48 percent (seven responses) said they were "disappointed" in
the quality of the parks. Also, 70.32
percent (1,019 responses) said there
was enough public active recreation
areas such as baseball diamonds, soccer fields and tennis courts.
When asked to change one thing
about Germantown, responded, suggestions included a dog park, skating
rink, a community performing arts
center, and a pool.

The new Menomonee Falls facility is
more than 200,000 square feet and will
process 15,000 packages per hour. It
will employ more than 225 people.

"Not only were we able to create
jobs for the Menomonee Falls area,
about 200 of them, we create the environment where people desire to work
for the great company we have. That
attitude is what provides the service
you guys expect from us," Viera said.

the village.

Viera noted that the facility has
been open since Aug. 21. He said that
FedEx has doubled in volume in the
past 10 years.
"In order to do that we have to
improve and expand our network," he
said, adding the that company has
opened 11 new hubs within the past 10
years and opened or relocated 560 facilities within the company's network.
Following a ribbon cutting, FedEx
staff offered tours of the new center.

Fans attending the Germantown-Port Washington

game Oct. 9 got to see three games in one, with
Germantown rallying from a third-quarter deficit to
win 46-28.
"Those kids came to play, they were ready to go,"
Germantown Coach Jake Davis said of Port
Washington. The game was the last home game for the
Pirates seniors. "Hats off to them, they did a nice job
on their senior night."
The game started out as a defensive struggle, with
Germantown's opening drive being stopped and the
Warhawk's first points coming on 26-yard field goal by
Jack Brzkala at the 8 minute mark. Special teams got
Germantown's first touchdown, as a Port Washington
punt was blocked and returned 18-yards for a touchdown by Riley Dorsey with 3:11 left in the first quarter.
Those were Germantown's only points in the first
half, as the Warhawks were held scoreless in the second quarter while the Pirates got on the board at the
10:19 mark of the on an 8-yard run by Graeme
Biskobing.
Arena football broke out in the third quarter, as
both teams combined for five touchdowns. The Pirates
first drive of the second half ended with a 15-yard run
by Matt Ruppel, giving the Pirates a 14-10 lead after
the extra point was converted. Germantown responded as Nate Seymour and Brad Zachowski connected on
a 60-yard pass play at the 10:01 mark, with
Germantown taking a 21-17 lead after the extra point
conversion.
That lead barely lasted two minutes, as Port
Washington scored on a 45-yard run by Ruppel, giving
the Pirates a 21-17 lead with 7:54 left in the third
quarter.
But Germantown got the lead back 14 seconds
later, as Seymour and Zachowski connected on a 65yard pass play.

District community engagement
meetings planned
The Germantown School District is
holding community engagement meetings regarding its facilities with the district's architect, PRA, and School
Perceptions facilitating. The purpose of
the meetings is to gauge community
sentiment in regard to the facilities of
the district. The first meeting was held
at Kennedy Middle School Oct. 15. The
next meetings will be at the Rockfield
Elementary School gym from 6:30-8
p.m. Oct. 28 and Amy Belle Elementary
School from 6:30-8p.m. Oct. 29.

Transportation (WisDOT) Southeast
Region in Waukesha is announcing a
public involvement meeting to discuss
proposed improvements to the WIS 167

(Mequon Road) and Country Aire Drive
intersection in Washington County.
The meeting will take place at the
Germantown
Public
Library
Community
Room,

Mequon Road, Germantown on
Thursday, October 22, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The objective of this meeting is to
familiarize the public with the purpose
and need of the project and obtain
input on proposed improvements.
The meeting will be conducted in an
open house format. No formal presentations will be made. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting, provide
input and ask questions. Project plans,
location maps, and other exhibits will
be on display to illustrate the work in
detail. WisDOT representatives will be
available to discuss the project on an
individual basis.
The project involves reconstructing
the Mequon Road and Country Aire
Drive intersection. Proposed improvements include:

Additional intersection improvements include accommodation of a
future second lane of travel in each
direction of WIS 167, while also following the alignment and profile of a
recent corridor study which identified
the long range needs of the roadway to
be a 4-lane divided section. By including these elements into the intersection
reconstruction, future impacts to the
roadway and adjacent residents would
be reduced. Construction is currently
scheduled for 2018.

The Wisconsin Department of
Administration (DOA) Division of
Housing awarded $2,138,776 in Phase 2
funds to the Southern Housing Region
for the Community Development Block
Grant (CDBG) Housing Program.
The Southern Housing Region is represented by the counties of Columbia,
Dodge, Jefferson, Kenosha, Ozaukee,
Racine, Rock, Sauk, Walworth and
Washington. The following entitlement
communities are not eligible for the
Southern Housing Region: Racine,
Beloit, Janesville and Kenosha.

These funds provide resources across
Wisconsin to address affordable housing
and community development. The
funds are available for the following
types of projects:
Owner occupied households.

These funds will be lent to income eligible households for eligible home
repairs. The loan is a 0% interest,
deferred payment loan you do not
pay it back until you sell the house, no
longer live there or 30 years from the
date of the note.
Homebuyer assistance. These

funds will be lent to income eligible
tenants for down payment and closing
cost assistance. There may also be
funds available to make repairs to the
home that is purchased. The loan is a
0% interest, deferred payment loan
you do not pay it back until you sell the
house, no longer live there or 30 years
from the date of the note.
Landlords. Installment loans

are available for landlords who rent to
tenants that are low- to moderateincome. The loan is a 0% interest loan.
The funds can be used for handicap
accessibility, windows, doors, siding,
roofing, electrical, plumbing and heating.
Funding for these competitive biannual awards is provided by the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban
Development. Grants were awarded
based upon the age of housing in the
area, the low-to-moderate income population, unemployment rate and affordability.

Kohls to expand the emergency department at Froedtert & the Medical College
of Wisconsin (MCW) Community
Memorial Hospital. The donation will
specifically support one of four specialized trauma rooms used for the most
critically ill or injured patients with
life-threatening emergencies. Each
trauma room is designed to accommodate a larger team of care providers and
specialized medical equipment providing stabilization, diagnosis and treatment quickly and effectively.
