Application period
15 March 14 April for the winter semester
15 October14 November for the summer semester

Prospectively an application for harp is likely to be


possible only for winter semester.
Applications are only accepted within the application period.
Only the date the application is received is decisive not the
postmark. In case the last day of the application deadline is
a Saturday, Sunday or a public holiday the application
deadline is extended to the next working day.
Duration of study and degree qualification
Standard period of study: 8 semesters
Degree: Bachelor of Music (B.mus.)
Structure of the study course
The programme comprises 240 ECTS.
Detailed information about the study program and its
curriculum can be found in the study regulations
(Studienordnung), which are available in German only.

Special musical talent that has to be proven during the
entrance examination

Bank statement (for transfers from abroad, proof of

This fee cant be refunded even if applicants withdraw
from the application process.

Proof of knowledge of German:
At the time of application: proof of linguistic ability
equivalent to level A2
At the time of matriculation: proof of linguistic ability
equivalent to level B2
Applicants from the Peoples Republic of China must
obtain a certificate from the Academic Evaluation Centre
www.aps.org.cn
Applications can be sent by post or handed in in person. Its
not possible to send applications by fax or email.
When applying for more than one programme applicants
have to fill in one separate application form for each
programme and send each form with the complete
documents separately.

Entrance examinations
These take place in January/mid-February for the summer
semester or June/mid-July for the winter semester. The
admissions office will send a form with the invitation letter
in which the applicant is to fill in the program for the
audition. The entrance examination proceeds as follows:

Main instrument: Presentation of three pieces (exception


violin) of different styles. All works have to be prepared
completely. First-time students are allowed to prepare
single movements.
Sight-reading
Music theory (harmony and ear training);
duration: approx. 1 hour;
written test: identifying intervals, triads, seventh chords
including inversions, cadences and melodic sequences.
Good knowledge of general music theory is expected.
Partial exams in harmony and ear training have to be
passed.

Piano; duration: approx. 10 minutes;
Pieces of a lower degree of difficulty, e.g. J.S. Bachs
Notenbchlein fr Anna Magdalena or R. Schumanns

Recommendations for the degree of difficulty for
the main instrument
Wind instruments and other orchestral instruments
including percussion
Flute: One of the three completely prepared pieces has to be
a concerto (e.g. by Mozart, Stamitz, Reinecke).
Recorder: Preparation of three pieces of different styles
(early Baroque, High Baroque and Avant-garde).
Oboe: One of the three chosen pieces has to be a concerto
(e.g. Mozart, Lebrun or others).
Clarinet: One of the three chosen pieces has to be a
concerto (e.g. Mozart, Weber or others).

Tuba: Presentation of two pieces of the candidates own


choice.
Kettledrum and Percussion: the level of education on the
kettledrum, side-drum and one of the Mallet instruments
(vibraphone, xylophone, marimba) is tested.
Strings
Violin: Presentation of four pieces of different styles; one of
the pieces has to be a first movement (Kopfsatz) of a
concerto and one etude or a capriccio. Transfer students
who have already studied 4 semesters have to prepare the
complete works including all the movements.
Viola: 1. One concerto (first movement)
2. Three movements of a Bach suite, BWV 1007-1012 or
something similar
3. One etude
4. One piece of the candidates own choice
The examination program has to include a slow movement.
Cello: Among the chosen pieces have to be 3 movements of
a solo suite by J. S. Bach, one concerto or one sonata of the
degree of difficulty of Boccerini, Saint-Saens, or Lalo, one
etude by Duport or Popper.
Double Bass: One of the chosen pieces has to be a sonata
by De Fesch or another work of similar degree of difficulty.
Guitar: Among the chosen pieces has to be a larger work of
the candidates own choice of the 19th or 20th century as
well as one or several movements of a Suite by J.S. Bach,
one technically demanding etude (e.g. Villa-Lobos,
Dodgson, Coste, op. 38, or Sor).
Harp: the recommended programme is
C.P.E. Bach: Sonata in G
Spohr: Fantasia
Hindemith: Sonata
and another piece of the applicants choice
All pieces have to be performed by heart.

Bassoon: One of the three chosen pieces has to be a


concerto (e.g. Mozart, Weber or others).
Trumpet: Among the chosen pieces one has to be of the
degree of difficulty of a concerto by H.F. Hummel or a
sonata by Hindemith.
Trombone: One of the chosen pieces has to be a concerto
with piano accompaniment, e.g. Concertino in B-flat major
by E. Sachse, Concerto in B-flat major by F. Grfe or AriaAndante, Allegro, Moderato by E. Paudert.
Saxophone: One of the chosen pieces has to be a concerto
(e.g. Glasunow, Milhand).
French horn: Among the pieces prepared one has to be
taken from the First Viennese School (Mozart, Haydn) or one
of the two horn concertos by R. Strauss.

Applicants from other universities


Transfer students have to take part in the regular entrance
exam. Study periods and credits from previous studies can
be recognised if judged equivalent.
