SECTION ONE:
The Importance of Fingerboard Hand Development...
DEDICATE TIME EVERY DAY TO BUILDING FRET-BOARD ABILITY:
One of the most common technical issues guitar players face at the beginner and
intermediate playing level is that of employing each of the fret-board hand finger. There was a
guitar teacher I had when I was a teenager who noticed I was always doing anything and everything I could to avoid the use of my small finger. He finally said to me, Ya know, Youve got
four fingers... why dont you use them? And, he was right!
Often times, when it comes to improving our guitar technique - if we do not ever force
ourselves to take things up to another level, we tend to stagnate with our ability. This is
especially important with attaining the higher levels of guitar fret-board ability. As the guitar
players technical skills increase, so will the control over the smoothness, (and the flow of the
rhythmic side of playing).
Due to all of these factors it is important to have several ways to exercise the ability of
building the skills of the fingerboard hand. During the exercise process, it is vital to also include
studies which increase the fret-board hands level of dexterity for playing; chords, scales, lines
and melodies. So, a well rounded routine is crucial.
Develop a good collection of exercises. Learn concepts such as; 3-Note Per String Scales,
slide techniques, hammer-ons & pull-offs, and most of all, get good at position shifting while
playing melodies. By combining all of this with a determination to get all four of your fret-board
hand fingers highly developed you will achieve a fantastic level of ability in a reasonable time
frame of dedicated technique practice. If you do it... youll get it!
SECTION TWO:
Getting Started with Daily Warm-up Exercises...
I would like to begin with a few simple warm-up routines that can be done every day prior to
playing any music. These warm-ups will help to grow your technical skill so that the use of all
four fingers starts to feel very easy to do. Remember, this all comes down to hours dedicated to
practice...
Example #1). Practice the exercise given below.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT:
Using the blank staff below, invent a chord stretching exercise using the, Add 2, along with
any other chord patterns that you are now familiar with upon the guitar neck.
SECTION FIVE:
Creating Along the Neck Melodic Lines, Licks & Runs...
The next direction I want to take us in is that of inventing melodic lines from scales that are laid
out far more horizontally across the fingerboard. This will help to incorporate odd finger
movements to accommodate for the shifting that occurs when melodic lines move very laterally
along the guitar neck.
Example
#7).
the position-shifting idea given below until it is smooth & effortless.
