Social Networking Information security provisions in
E-Commerce
E-commerce Security Issues

Any e-commerce system has to meet the following requirements:

1.
2.
3.
4.

Privacy of the data in the transaction (done by data encryption)

Authentication of identity of the sender and recipient
Integrity of the data so it is not tampered with
Non Repudiation: Proof that message was received.

Security Provisions:
To meet the requirements of e-commerce security, the following techniques are
used:
A. Encryption, Digital Signatures and Certificates.
Privacy is handled by encryption. Encryption is the conversion of
data into a form, called ciphertext (plain text encoded into nonreadable form) that cannot be easily understood by unauthorized
people.
Digital signatures meet the need for authentication and integrity. A
digital signature is a digital code that can be attached to any
electronically transmitted message that uniquely identifies the
sender.
Digital certificate. This is the digital document issued by
Certification Authority e.g. Verisign, Thwate that uniquely identifies
the merchant.
Very often the message is also time stamped by the third party so
we have the proof of message received.

B. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)

SSL is the standard security technology for establishing an

encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This links
makes sure that all data passed between Web server and browsers
remain private.

C. PCI, SET, Firewalls, Kerberos

Credit cards details can be safely sent with SSL, but once stored
on the server they are vulnerable to outsiders hacking into the
server. A PCI (peripheral component interconnect) a hardware card is
added for protection.
SET (Secure Electronic Transaction)Developed by Visa and
Mastercard, SET uses encryption for privacy and digital certificates
to authenticate the 3 parties: merchant, customer and bank.
Firewalls (software or hardware) protects the server, network and
individual PCs from attack by viruses and crackers. Many companies
use Kerberos protocol which uses a form of cryptography to restrict
access to authorized
employees.

Introducing ICT
ICT has proved to be the
essential in the development of
modern societies. ICT systems
are used in Educational systems,
Offices, shops, factories, aircraft, ships, communication, medicine, research,
farming etc. Advantages of ICT systems are increase in productivity, ability to
deal with vast amounts of information, rapid transmission and reception of
information.

Benefits of ICT in Education:

Student learning is simplified

Learning interactive and enjoyable
Learning can take place anytime and anywhere
Images and videos help students retain more information

Benefits of ICT in HealthCare

Telemedicine and tele-health services
Healthcare data management
Information systems
Appropriate data collection devices and analysis tools
Appropriate and affordable biomedical equipment for grass root
deployment
Video conferencing and e-connectivity
Reduced administrative cost

Benefits of ICT in Governance

Lower communication cost

Reliable mode of communication
Effective sharing of information
Paperless environment
Borderless communication
Better response to customers need

National Informatics Centre (NIC) of the Government of India is at the

forefront of active promotion and implementation of ICT solutions in the
government.

Emergence of Knowledge Economy:

The increased use of computers has compelled people to have computer
knowledge to enhance their job opportunities. Presently the knowledge is
flooding in the economy and people are becoming tech-savy. The use of ICT has
helped well minded people come together for a noble cause by interacting
through social networking sites.

Knowledge based society:

Societies that are well educated and who therefore rely on knowledge of their
citizens to drive the innovation, entrepreneurship and dynamism of the societys

economy. Individuals are empowered with relevant and current information so as to

bring out their potential strengths in transforming the society.

Infomania
The continuous and frequent responding to emails, SMS and facebook updates has
reduced the concentration of people to other activities like studies, responsibility to
the family and other responsibilities. People should not be wasting time with chatting
online but use ICT productively and creatively.

Digital Unity
Information and knowledge has nowadays become an important driving force in the
society compared to land, capital or labor. Digital unity creates a modern progressive
society lead by the integration of ICT at home, work, education and recreation.

Digital Divide
Society can be divided into people who have access to and do not have access to
modern ICT facilities. Digital divide exists between those in rural areas and in urban
areas. Urban area have people with knowledge and informatics whereas rural areas
are behind as those who wish to develop their skills have moved to urban areas.
