Leadership Shepherd Leadership (Based on Psalm 23)

Some of you have been baptized in the holy spirit

Leadership Qualities - 4 Es wrapped in P:

Someone who has energy;

Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the
city until you have been clothed with power from on high.

Acts 1:4-8 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: Do
not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak
about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy
Spirit. Then they gathered around him and asked him, Lord, are you at this time going to restore
the kingdom to Israel? 7 He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father
has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth.
Acts 2:37-41 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the
other apostles, Brothers, what shall we do?
38

Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for
you and your children and for all who are far offfor all whom the Lord our God will call.
40

With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, Save yourselves from
this corrupt generation. 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three
thousand were added to their number that day.

2 Tim 1:6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in

you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make
us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed of the
testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for
the gospel, by the power of God. 9 He has saved us and called us to a holy lifenot
because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This
grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now
been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed
death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this
gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12 That is why I am
suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have

believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him
until that day.
John 14: 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have
been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to
the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be
glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. 15 If
you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you
another advocate to help you and be with you forever 17 the Spirit of truth.

who energizes others; (discipleship)

Matthew 28
Matthew 28:18-20
18

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And
surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
19

This passage is known as the Great Commission. Please let me know what you think. How many of you
agree that this is a command from our Lord Jesus Christ?

Does the commission tell us to evangelize others to convert them to Christianity and let them find their
faith on their own? Or does this mean we are to lead and to teach others about the scriptures and about
the Lord?
This passage at the end of Matthews Gospel is what is called the Great Commission. This is also the
great failure of the church! When I say the church here, Im referring to the people; you and me. This is
the main call to the church from our Lord and Savior, and is the one thing most churches do not do at all!
Discipleship is the main reason for a church to exist. If discipleship is mostly absent from our
churches, then most Christians will not understand how to live out their faith. They will not be able to
handle problems, witness, share their faith, or grow effectively spiritually, because no one is modeling, or
showing them the way! Some churches do a great job with evangelism, but once the people come in,
thats it. Where is discipleship? What is it? Is the back door of the church as big as the front door?
Being a disciple encompasses more than just asking Christ in, and goes far beyond baptism. Our
conversion, our acceptance of Christ as Savior, our election, is the beginning, the entrance, into
the faith and Christian life. Baptism is initiation and public dedication. It is to be the door through which
we go in our walk of faith, as is also our profession and testimony of our faith publicly. It does not stop
there! It starts there!

God does not ask us to seek converts, He asks us to do Discipleship.

Jesus purpose for His three years of earthly ministry was the discipleship and equipping of the 12
Disciples. This was His drive and where most of His time was spent. He was focused on the teaching of
the kingdom of God, teaching men to see beyond their present situation to the life to come. With His
teaching, Jesus entrusted His church and people to the care of the people He taught. They were to
replicate themselves to others. The objective was that every Believer was an equipper, every member a
minister, every Christian involved in the life and gifts of the Body to influence the world.
What is Discipleship? Discipleship is becoming example and teaching others to obey everything
I have commanded you. Its not teaching others about Gods commandments. But it is teaching others
to obey Gods commandments. That is to put it into practice. In order to do so, we need to put Gods
commandments into practice ourselves

Acts 2:42-47 (care group)

42

They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship, to the

breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many
wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and
had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone
who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.
They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47
praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their
number daily those who were being saved.

who has edge ("someone who can say yes or no

decisively")
John 10 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

28

I give
them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my
hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all [c]; no one can
snatch them out of my Fathers hand. 30 I and the Father are one.
What is Discipleship? Discipleship is becoming example and teaching others to obey everything
I have commanded you. Its not teaching others about Gods commandments. But it is teaching others
to obey Gods commandments. That is to put it into practice. In order to do so, we need to put Gods
commandments into practice ourselves.

Since we need to be an example and to teach others to obey everything that the Lord has commanded,
we need to be a disciple ourselves. We need to understand and obey the commandments as examples to
others. That leads into the 2nd important question.
What is the Greatest Commandments?
Mark 12:29-31
29"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.
30Love the Lord your God with all your heart (passion) and with all your soul (spirit) and with all
your mind (wisdom) and with all your strength (energy).' 31The second is this: 'Love your neighbor
as yourself.'There is no commandment greater than these."
The Lord is One serving only one master with total commitment with everything we have
With all your Heart, Soul, Mind, Strength On each element we need to max it to its
potential.
We need to serve with all the 4-cylinder functioning. Heart/passion, ministry to the soul with the Holy
Spirit, mind uses wisdom, strength with energy.

Becoming role model or the Salt and the Light is the most effective way to teach others to obey
Gods commands

and who can execute (not just

theory/knowledge/talk only).
Luke 13:33-35

good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.
"He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

34

"Salt is
It is fit neither for

In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.
35

So lets turn into the Sermon on the Mountain about the Salt and the Light found
on Matthew 5:13-16.
Matthew 5: 13-16 Salt and Light
13"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no
longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
14"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and
put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the
same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in
heaven.

It is repeated again:

As a disciple if you cant be a good example, you are not good anymore like a
salt loses its saltiness.
On the other hand a good disciple is unstoppable like salt and light. It cannot
be hidden and it impacts the surrounding.
Good disciple will bring Glory to God.
Non coercive but unstoppable, bring value (taste and light)
Like Jesus who wait and knock on the door of our heart, rather than breaking the door, our approach as
the light and the salt of the World should be non-coercive but unstoppable. But it is unstoppable force.
Imagine if the World is one big bowl of noodle soup. Once you put salt, it will change the taste of your
entire noodle soup. Like the light, it will remove the darkness. The light wont open the window. Its there
shining its brightness enlightening the darkness, the minute the window is open.

We are not silence, we keep on knocking door but we dont force our way in.
How can we be non-intrusive but unstoppable?
We need to live the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The bible says no law against it. Thats non coercive.
By our love they know we are Christian Lets live a thought provoking life so that others praise God or
ask question.

Ask for God's wisdom

We need a lot of wisdom. Its going to be challenging but exciting. Because we have to be creative,
inventive. We need commitment and wisdom. Unwavering commitment because James says if we lack
wisdom we need to ask the Lord. But we need to have unwavering faith.
So if we want to be successful we need to have unwavering faith and commitment

The next verses in Matthew 5 contain practical tips:

Respect the law, fulfill the law (5:17)

John 21:15-17 What makes God happy? God is happy when we love our neighbor, when we feed
his sheep.

15

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you love me
more than these?
Yes, Lord, he said, you know that I love you.
Jesus said, Feed my lambs.
16

Again Jesus said, Simon son of John, do you love me?

He answered, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

Jesus said, Take care of my sheep.
17

The third time he said to him, Simon son of John, do you love me?

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, Do you love me? He said, Lord, you
know all things; you know that I love you.
Jesus said, Feed my sheep.
