A process uses flow of a liquid (1000 kg/m3 dense and 0.001 kg/m.s viscous) through a
pipe (5.8 mm diameter and surface roughness 2.9mm) at a velocity of u = 1.8 m/s. Find
the friction factor b in the pipe by solving the Colebrooks equation:

using fixed-point iteration method up to four iterations.

(2)

Following matrix shows Inter-Industry demand for three Industries. Determine the
equilibrium worth of outputs for three industries using Gauss-Seidel method (up to four
iterations) if the Non-industry demands are $100 million, $60 million and $150 million,

Note:

Time Allowed: 50 minutes

Maximum Marks: 5

Attempt all of the following questions:

(1)

An industry sells a product at $34/units. The total expenditure on manufacture of x

thousand units of products varies as: C ( x) 4 x3 18x 2 7 x 300 . Determine how many
units of products must be manufactured and sold in order to assure gain in the profit? Use
Regula-Falsi method up to 4 iterations.

(2)

In an Industrial process, water flows through three tanks in succession as illustrated in

following figure. The tanks have unit cross-section and have heads of water x, y and z
respectively. The rate of inflow into the first tank is u = 10, the flow rate in the tube
connecting tanks 1 and 2 is 6 x y , the flow rate in the tube connecting tanks 2 and 3 is

5 y z and the rate of outflow from tank 3 is 5z . Assuming the system at steady state,
solve for the level of water in each tank using Gauss-Seidel method up to four iterations.

Attempt all of the following questions:

(1)

After initiating an industrial process to remove unwanted traces in a solution,

concentration C of the unwanted traces remaining in the solution after t minutes
follows the function: n(t ) 300e1.6t 0.003t . Determine after how many minutes, will the
solution be free from unwanted traces by using Newton-Raphson method up to four
iterations.

(2)

Three reactors are linked by pipes as shown in following figure. The rate at which chemical
in inserted into the channel are 200mg/s and 500mg/s. The flow rates Qs for each pipe are
also shown. Assume that the system is at steady state, develop mass balance equations for
the reactors and solve for the unknown concentrations cs of chemicals in three reactors
by using Gauss-Seiedel method up to four iterations.
