ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
ACTIVITY NO. 30

CONTENT
INTRODUCTION
Environmental studies are the scientific study of the environmental system and the status
of its inherent or induced changes on organisms. It includes not only the study of physical and
biological characters of the environment but also the social and cultural factors and the impact of
man on environment. According to UNESCO (1971), the objectives of environmental studies are:
(a) Creating the awareness about environmental problems among people.
(b) Imparting basic knowledge about the environment and its allied problems.
(c) Developing an attitude of concern for the environment.
(d) Acquiring skills to help the concerned individuals in identifying and solving environmental
problems.
(e) Motivating public to participate in environment protection and environment improvement.
(f) Striving to attain harmony with Nature.
The disciplines included in environmental education are environmental sciences,
environmental engineering and environmental management. (a) Environmental Science, It deals
with the scientific study of environmental system (air, water, soil and land), the inherent or induced
changes on organisms and the environmental damages incurred as a result of human interaction
with the environment. (b) Environmental Engineering, It deals with the study of technical
processes involved in the protection of environment from the potentially deleterious effects of
human activity and improving the environmental quality for the health and well beings of humans.
Environmental Management, it promotes due regard for physical, social and economic
environment of the enterprise or projects. It encourages planned investment at the start of the
production chain rather than forced investment in cleaning up at the end.
SYNTHESIS
It generally covers the areas as environment and enterprise objectives, scope, and
structure of the environment, interaction of nature, society and the enterprise, environment impact
assessment, economics of pollution, prevention, environmental management standards etc. The
importances of environmental studies are as follows:
1. To clarify modern environmental concept like how to conserve biodiversity.
2. To know the more sustainable way of living.
3. To use natural resources more efficiently.
4. To know the behavior of organism under natural conditions.
5. To know the interrelationship between organisms in populations and communities.
6. To aware and educate people regarding environmental issues and problems at local, national
and international levels.
IMPLICATION TO EDUCATION
In todays world because of industrialization and increasing population, the natural resources has
been rapidly utilized and our environment is being increasingly degraded by human activities, so
we need to protect the environment.
It is not only the duty of government but also the people to take active role for protecting the
environment, so protecting our environment is economically more viable than cleaning it up once, it
is damaged.

TOPIC: ENVIRONMENTAL LAW
ACTIVITY NO. 31

CONTENT
INTRODUCTION
The Philippine Environmental Laws is the law requires private corporations, firms, or entities
including agencies and instrumentalities of the government to prepare an environmental impact
statement (EIS) for every proposed project and undertaking which the quality of the environment.
The EIS is a document that provides a comprehensive study of the significant impacts of a project
on the environment. In general, only projects that pose potential significant impact to the
environment shall be required to secure an ECC (Environmental Compliance Certificate). In
determining the scope of the EIS System, two factors are considered: (i) the nature of the project
and its potential to cause significant negative environmental impacts, and (ii) the sensitivity or
vulnerability of environmental resources in the project are.
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is the process that involves evaluating and predicting the
likely impacts of a project on the environment during construction, commissioning, operations and
abandonment. It is undertaken by, among others, the project proponent and/or EIA Consultant,
EMB, a Review Committee, affected communities and other stakeholders.
SYNTHESIS
Environmental law has developed in response to emerging awareness of and concern over
issues impacting the entire world. While laws have developed piecemeal and for a variety of
reasons, some effort has gone into identifying key concepts and guiding principles common to
environmental law as a whole. The principles discussed below are not an exhaustive list and are
not universally recognized or accepted. Nonetheless, they represent important principles for the
understanding of environmental law around the world.
IMPLICATION TO EDUCATION
As people become more vigilant about the state of environment and insistent that offenders of
environmental laws be held accountable, the Philippine environmental laws and government
regulations are in place with the intent of protecting the environment and aid people from all walks
of life in their pursuit to a balance and healthy ecology.
Indeed, the environment has become such an important issue. It is imperative that people should
be fully informed on what the relevant environmental laws are so that they may be fully aware what
are allowed and what are prohibited in relation to the actions they take towards the environment.

CONTENT
INTRODUCTION
Environmental education is a process by which people develop awareness, concern, and
knowledge of the environment and learn to use this understanding to preserve, conserve and utilize
the environment in a sustainable manner for the benefit of the present and future generations. It
entails the will to take personal initiatives and social participation to achieve sustainability. The
goals of Environmental Education are: (1) To improve the quality of Environment. (2) To create
awareness among the people on environmental problems and conservation. (3) To create an
atmosphere so that people participate in decision- making and develop capabilities to evaluate the
developmental programs. The environmental principles are: (a) Nature Know Best (b) All forms of
life are equally important. (c) Everything is interconnected (d) Everything changes. (e) Everything
must go somewhere. (f) Ours is a finite Earth.
SYNTHESIS
The importance of Environmental Education are to: (a) Increase student engagement in science.
(b) Improves student achievement in core subject areas. (c) Helps address nature deficit
disorder.
There are the green tips to save mother earth. Used the 3Rs of the Environment which are
Reduce, reuse and recycle. Reducing the amount of waste you produce is the best way to help the
environment. There are lots of ways to do this. For example: Instead of buying something you're
not going to use very often, see if you can borrow it from someone you know. Reuse bring cloth
sacks to the store with you instead of taking home new paper or plastic bags. You can use these
sacks again and again. You'll be saving some trees. Recycle, many of the things we use every day,
like paper bags, soda cans, and milk cartons, are made out of materials that can be recycled. In
addition to recycling the things you buy, you can help the environment by buying products that
contain recycled materials.
IMPLICATION TO EDUCATION
The basic aim of environment education is to provide different groups of people as well as
graduates in a variety of professional fields with the knowledge needed to develop a sense of
responsibility towards the environment and the rational utilization of its riches. It also aims to make
of this knowledge and skills to preserve, conserve and utilize the environment in a sustainable
manner for the benefit of present and future generations.

ENVIRONMENTAL
EDUCATION
AND
MASS MEDIA
ACTIVITY NO. 33

CONTENT
INTRODUCTION
Environmental education is now being seen as an instrument and a process that enables
participation and learning by people of all ages, based on two-way communication rather than the
old paradigm of a one-way flow of information, from teachers to pupils. The content and substance
of environmental education is also undergoing review and change. Reorienting education as a
whole towards sustainability involves the various levels of formal, non-formal and informal
education at all levels of society. Environmental education has developed within the conceptual
framework that emerged from the first international conference in Tbilisi (1977) and is now seen as
education for sustainability. This allowed environmental education to address the broad range of
issues and concerns included in Agenda 21 and others which evolved through the meetings of the
Commission on Sustainable Development (UNESCO 1997).
SYNTHESIS
Education has been identified as a critical driving force for change in the Asian and Pacific Region,
and countries and regional organizations have adopted a range of strategies for implementing
programs in environmental education (Fien 1999a). The overall trends in environmental education
information and communication in the region reflect the concerns of people and societies in
transition. The key international conventions on environment place a high value on public
awareness, education and training and obtaining information through monitoring as essential
elements for the success of the conventions.
IMPLICATION TO EDUCATION
The important pre-requisites for the successful introduction of environmental education in schools
include: the existence of clear and well communicated policies; the political will and availability of
sufficient resources for implementation; curricula revision; proper preparation of teachers through
in-service training; the availability of relevant materials in local languages; networks for exchange of
expertise between teachers; and adequate assessment and incentives for teachers development. It
is encouraging to note that in spite of many constraints, practitioners and promoters of
environmental education have found innovative ways of teaching throughout the region.
