LETTER

From The
Editor-In-Chief

ver the weekend I had to hit the books once again. I'd discovered
a plumbing leak between the upstairs and downstairs bathrooms
of my house, and had to drag out my dog-eared book on the
Basics of Plumbing. I thought I'd fixed this leak the last time it materialized by replacing the leaky valve stems upstairs. But lo and behold,
the leak has returned, right through the ceiling drywall beneath it. I'm
still studying the problem and Im worried that Ill have to open up an
upstairs wall to locate the leak. Since I'm no professional plumber, you
can bet I'll have that book in hand if I do.
I rely a lot on books for my home projects, both big and small. I've
got books on basic electrical wiring, fundamentals of house framing,
deck-building basics, introduction to welding, and working with concrete.
I have a guide to woodworking, lawn care and landscaping, painting
techniques, retaining wall construction, brickwork and masonry, tile
installation, home energy conservation and backyard gardening. The
list goes on and on, and I realize that without my how-to reference
shelf, I'd often be up the creek without a paddleand I'm the editor of
a home-improvement magazine. I'm supposed to have a good working
knowledge of how to handle the topics we cover.
The truth is that I've never met anyone who is a master of every trade
under the roof, which is exactly why most professionals specialize in a
certain skillset. On the other hand, DIY homeowners often tackle a wide
array of different projects that might call for plumbing one day, electrical
work the next, and drywall installation on the weekend. When tackling
these jobs without a lot of prior experience, I highly recommend you
refer to a reliable (and current) reference book before diving in headfirst. Every time I revisit a topic, I relearn something fundamental that
I'd forgotten since I don't spend every day doing the same type of work.
You'll find lots of helpful articles in the pages of Extreme How-To as
well as the hundreds of stories that we've archived on our website,
Extremehowto.com. But I also recommend
that DIY'ers invest a few dollars in building a
home library of how-to books that they'll have
ready at their fingertips. When a storm hits,
the power fails and you can't jump online,
you might be glad you've got those old-fashioned hard copies to walk you through the
repairs of the day.

Q:

What are the symptoms of a blown head gasket on a car engine?

A:

The only externally visible sign of a blown head gasket would be coolant leaking from the head gasket
between the combustion chamber and the coolant passage in your engine. Look below the exhaust
manifold for signs of leakage. On the intake stroke of the cylinder closest to the leak, coolant will be drawn in
by the vacuum of the intake air charge. Upon combustion, the high pressure will force exhaust gases past the
head gasket into the coolant passage. As coolant is pulled into the combustion chamber it will cause your coolant
level to drop. This can cause a low coolant light and overheating if the cooling system on your vehicle is not continually topped off. Also, once your engine is turned off, the coolant still left in the engine cylinder will seep past
your piston rings into your engine oil. Coolant mixed with oil will make a white, milky substance. You may see this
on your oil dipstick or on a ring around your oil cap. Also, look for white smoke from the exhaust pipe, or bubbles
in the radiator or coolant overflow tank. Source: gobluedevil.com/blog.

Q:
A:

Can I use 2x8 treated lumber as deck boards?

No, that's a not a good idea. Lumber wider than 6 inches should not be used as a flat surface. Wide,
flat boards have a tendency to pool rain water, which can lead to cupping problems. Stick with 2x6 or
5/4 deck boards.

Q:
A:

What's the best way to keep new tile grout clean?

Cementitious grout is subject to staining because it is a porous material. Most professionals recommend
applying a sealer after the grout has cured, typically in three days. The sealer should be reapplied periodically to maintain an enhanced
level of stain resistance.
Additionally, some newer grout
formulations are stain-resistant
right out of the pail against
common household staining
agents. Also, check
the product packaging for
indications of Microban antimicrobial protection that
resists the growth of mold
and mildew on dried grout.

Q:

How can I keep mice

out of my dryer vent?

Replace the dryer

vent on the outside
of your house with a two-part
dryer vent seal. The plastic
vent seal costs roughly $15
and can easily be installed with
a screwdriver and a little latex
caulk. First, remove the old
vent, apply caulk, and fasten
the elbow of the new vent with
screws so it's directed upward.
Then, attach the floating cup
that covers the vent body,
protecting it from rain and
keeping out rodents. Clean
out the lint every three

UPGRADED ELIMINATOR
RCS TOOL & MANTIS
HIDDEN DECK CLIPS
When it comes to building your
dream deck, the installation
process should be quick, efficient
and easy, whether youre a professional or a do-it-yourselfer. Thats
why Sure Drive invented the
Eliminator RCS pneumatic tool,
which works with the company's
Mantis fasteners to speed up hidden deck-clip installation by 75
percent. The Sure Drive engineering team recently developed new
modifications to the Eliminator
RCS system based on user feedback. Deck builders noticed the
tool would sometimes jam

20

because the angles of the nails

and Mantis clips weren't identical.
The redesigned feeder rail precisely matches the angle of the
Mantis clip countersink and
improves how the rail holds the
clip, making it more secure and
eliminating mis-feeds. Contractors
formerly needed to dial back their
air compressors (typically 110120 lbs. of pressure) for the
Mantis clip installation (75-85 lbs.
of pressure), which was inconvenient and time-consuming. The
modified driver blade now accommodates air pressure between 75
and 120 lbs., allowing builders to
use this tool without having to
adjust. Sure Drive also beefed up
the slide attachment with thicker
stainless steel and specialty locking fasteners, making it stronger

FENCE
STAINING
MADE
EASY
By Matt Weber

t's no secret that outdoor wood requires routine maintenance to keep

it in good shape. In the shade it's susceptible to mildew, and in the sun
it's punished by ultraviolet rays that give it that aged, gray appearance.
To maintain its beauty the wood must be periodically cleaned and
preserved, and DIY homeowners are always looking for a better way to
get the job done.
When it came time to re-stain a shadowbox fence, I wanted
to work smarter rather than harder, so I tried a promising
product called Ready Seal. This is an oil-based semi-transparent wood stain and sealer in one. Ready Seal is a professional-grade product, but is formulated with unique
goof proof features that make it especially attractive
for do-it-yourselfers.
Typical wood stains require back-brushing to smooth
out runs, streaks and brush marks and to work the coating into the grain. I was dreading this part of the job.
Spraying typical wood stains requires spraying one section of the project at a time and immediately back-brushing
the area to prevent lap marks or runs. The back-brushing
process requires a helper, or it requires the person spraying to
serve double-duty by performing both jobs. This involves a great
deal of labor, especially on vertical surfaces such as fences. If you eliminate the back-brushing, you eliminate half the work, making the project
much easier for a lone DIYer like myself. Ready Seal is formulated to
require no back-brushing, and thats the selling point that convinced me
to try the product.

STAINING

Outdoor wood accumulates all sorts of dirt and grime, so the

surface must be thoroughly cleaned before staining and sealing.
Plus, the product is a penetrating sealer, which I prefer over the
film-forming type. Instead of forming a rigid film on the wood surface, Ready Seal penetrates deep
into wood fibers with waterproofing oils to create a flexible barrier
that keeps moisture out. The oils
expand and contract so the coating wont crack, chip, flake or
peel, which can lead to failure.
It turns out that its also easy
to apply with an airless sprayer.
Whereas some finishing products
require a multi-step application
process, Ready Seal is formulated
to add color and seal the wood
from moisture in one step. This
saves time, money and sweat.

CLEAN THE WOOD

SURFACE
Over time a fence can accumulate all sorts of grime on the wood
surface. From airborne dirt, pollen,
mildew or even mold, all this gunk
deteriorates the look of the wood
and if left neglected can eventually lead to rot. All the loose grime
should be cleaned away. One

28

www.extremehowto.com

method is to use a long-handled

scrub brush with a wood detergent and even follow up with
a wood brightener to open the
grain to accept new preservative.
You can't skip the cleaning step
or even skimp on the work. If
you apply stain/sealer over grime
or mildew, you aren't staining a
fence, you're staining the grime.
It will look ugly, the coating won't
absorb evenly, it won't have the
proper preservative properties,
and it will come off the fence
when the grime detaches.
An alternative method to cleaning the fence is to use a pressurewasher. The high-pressure water
stream not only blasts away grime
and mildew but it can peel away
the outer layer of the wood's dead
gray cells and expose the lighter,
fresher wood grain.
Whereas some professionals
advise against using a pressurewasher on outdoor wood decks, I
throw that advice out the window
when it comes to a fence. The
conventional wisdom suggests the
high-pressure water can damage

the woodgrain, giving it a fuzzy

appearance and texture. This is
primarily a concern for walking
surfaces because homeowners
typically want smooth deck boards
with little chance of picking up a
splinter when walking barefoot.
Nobody walks on a fence, though,
so I say blast away.
When using a power-washer,
carefully work in the direction of
the grainnever against it, which
can result in a noticeable cut
across the wood.

PREP THE SPRAYER

The easiest, most productive
way to spray a very large project
like this is to use an airless
sprayer. An airless unit draws
stain or paint directly from a paint
canister and sprays at pressures
up to 1,700 PSI.
Whether you're purchasing,
renting or borrowing one of these
units, it's important to understand
they require additional care to
make sure they're in proper working order. Airless sprayers must be
flushed and tested each time a

FENCE
STAINING

new job is started to ensure no
contaminants from previous jobs
will mix with the product you intend
to apply. Follow the sprayer manufacturer's instructions for circulating the solvent used to clean the

equipment. For latex paints, many

pros prefer to use clean water, but
an oil-based stain like this requires
mineral spirits.
Once the system has been
flushed and drained, you can load

the stain/sealer of your choice. Mix

the product thoroughly and strain
the stain/sealer through a paint
screen to keep solid particles out
of the system.
Before spraying the new coating,
discharge the sprayer into a bucket
to flush all the mineral spirits out
of the hose. Hold the trigger until
the gun begins to spray the stain

First step is to pressure-wash the

fence to rejuvenate the wood.

you plan to apply, otherwise you'll
end up hosing down your project
with mineral spirits.

APPLYING THE
STAIN/SEALER
Movement is extremely important when using an airless sprayer.
To avoid excessive stain accumulation, don't pull the trigger unless

SMOOTH MOVES
When prepping outdoor wood for refinishing,
the most direct way to renew the appearance is
to sand or pressure-wash the surface. However,
sanding can be difficult and time-consuming
for large areas, and pressure-washing must
be approached with caution. The problem with
pressure-washing is that too much pressure can
damage the wood surface, removing the gray and
green but causing the surface to fuzz or splinter.
This can not only affect the woods appearance,
but can pose a touch hazard for areas such as
deck surfaces where people may walk barefoot.
When using a power-washer, limit your pressure
to no more than 1,000 or 1,200 PSI and carefully
work in the direction of the grainnever against it.
For smaller surfaces that need a touch-friendly
surface, such as chairs, swings and benches, sanding
is the best way to go. Use a random orbital sander
and start with an 80-grit abrasive for material removal.
Gradually progress to finer abrasives until the wood
surface is smooth enough for a new coat of stain/sealer.

BUILDING A
BOATHOUSE

and his construction crew, Earl and Jack,
for their work on this project.

dock is essentially a deck built on piles in the

water, and a boathouse is a specialized structure built on top of the dock. Whereas building
a deck is a popular project for serious do-it-yourselfers, building a boathouseespecially a big one
requires heavy-duty machinery like a barge mounted
with a huge winch-operated pile driver. Although
much of this project is outside the realm the do-ityourselfer, we thought our readers would be interested to see how it's accomplished.

THE RIGHT MATERIALS

You cant simply stick any old wood near the
water and expect it to hold up. For this project
the dock-builders at Tradesman Co. of Pell City,
Alabama, chose lumber from the Everwood
Treatment Company, which uses Wolmanized
copper azole preservative treatment, treated with
micronized CA-C for Ground Contact as well as for
Freshwater Immersion, meeting all building code
requirements. Its a great building material for

docks, decks, retaining walls,
fences, picnic tables, planter
boxes, walkways, sill plate and
structural members. The lumbers
S4S designation means its
sanded on four sides for a finished, professional look. And,
Wolmanized Outdoor wood has
earned the Good Housekeeping
Seal, has been certified by Home
Innovation Research Labs as

meeting requirements for termiteresistant materials in the National

Green Building Standard, and
has been verified by the internationally recognized EcoSpecifier.
It comes with a limited warranty
for most residential applications
and, to top it off, it costs less
than alternatives such as tropical
hardwoods and artificial wood.
By using hand-picked No. 1
grade lumber, the dock owner
gets only the best looking boards
with fewer knots and imperfections from the lumberyard.

One at a time, a steel cable

is used to hoist a pole from the
stockpile, and the barge is used
to float it over to its intended location. The crew spots the layout
and lowers pole-anchors to hold
the barge steady on the lake floor.
A worker positions the post,
plumbs it up, and the crane operator drops a doubled iron plate
onto the top to hammer it down.

BRING ON THE BARGE

The first construction crew
arrives at the jobsite by water.
One boat carries the piles that
will support the boathouse, and
another one carries the cranelike pile driver to install them.

Before seeing this in action, I

was curious: Do the installers cut
the end of the piles at some sort
of sharp angle for easier entry
into the lake bottom? The answer
is no. The workers plant the blunt
end of the massive round poles
right where they want it, and the
pile driver hammers it in with
sheer brute force.

BUILDING A
BOATHOUSE
Using string-lines to follow layout,
the barge crew lines up all the
posts necessary and drives them
in position with the mighty anvil.
It's pretty cool to watch.

The remainder of the dock is

erected much like a well-built
deck, with a system of beams
(or girders), joists and 5/4 deck
boards. Of course, one of the

primary differences is that you

have to swim to the work. Thank
goodness for reliable cordless tools
with lithium-ion batteries.
As with any framing project, the
structural components have to stay
dead-on layout, completely plumb
and square. To keep everything in
place during assembly, the crew

54

www.extremehowto.com

To adjust a bowed board, one

worker uses a 2x4 as a lever to
muscle it in place while another
framer nails it down.
Unlike a deck, this boathouse
dock is constructed with an open

uses straps to pull pieces together

or spacer bars to push them apart
as needed while they sink the fasteners.
With the doubled beams in
place, next comes the joist system
built from 2x10s.
The joists are first toe-nailed
over the beams. The crew then
goes back to nail 2x10 scabs over
the butt joints between each joist.
Next comes the 5/4 decking. To
keep consistent joints, the workers
use wood wedges as spacers
between boards.

span to serve as a boat slip.

Once the floor boards are
pinned in position, they can be
screwed en masse to the joists.

56

www.extremehowto.com

The decking is first marked

with chalk lines to identify joist
locations.
To speed up the deck-fastening
process, the crew uses collated
screws from Muro.
The Muro auto-feed screwdriver
is a major labor-saver and permits
the installers to work in a comfortable upright position, driving
screws at a rapid-fire rate that'd
make even John Rambo proud.

BUILDING A
BOATHOUSE

The deck boards get two screws at every joist location,

roughly an inch from the edge.
The dock evolves into a boathouse once you build
the structure on top of it. The Tradesman Co. crew integrates the support posts of the boathouse roof into the
dock framing.

To support a continuous load, the 8x8 posts are

located over the piles and joined with stainless carriage bolts.

58

www.extremehowto.com

The boathouse gets a hip roof that covers the entire

boat slip and part of the sundeck.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL
As a DIY carpenter, I tackle woodwork projects both
large and small. I've noticed on the more complicated
projects, attention to detail often goes by the wayside
when taking on a large scope of work. For the
Tradesmen Co. crew,
who build these boathouses all the time, the
details arent forgotten.
The extra effort that
went into details such
as mitered rim joists
and custom molding for
the base of the posts
really say a lot about
the craftsmanship of
these professionals.
Notably, the curved
cross-braces are a really nice touch. The crew
cuts the post stock to
length and then takes it
to a local woodshop,
where a carpenter uses
a band-saw to cut the
graceful profile along
each piece. The crew
installs the curved
braces on site for a
standout decorative
enhancement.

59

BUILDING A
BOATHOUSE

A boathouse can be roofed with your

choice of color and material. For this
project the homeowner selected corrugated metal roofing for its low maintenance requirements and sleek look.
The panels are fastened to the
rafters with coated self-tapping screws
with rubber washers. The large size of
the panels sped up installation compared to fastening individual shingles,
and the crew completed the roofing in
a single afternoon.

BOATHOUSE
A nice boathouse deserves a quality boatlift, and this Hi-Tide boatlift
is built with two marine aluminum
I-beams that are mounted into
the roof framing (which has been

The driveshaft is then mounted

onto the I-beams. This is a two-man

help direct the flow of waste water
into the drainpipe's opening. Wax
rings come in two different sizes.
There is a regular size and an
"extra-thick" size. The larger size
is sometimes used to ensure a
tight seal when a floor has been
remodeled and the new flooring is
higher than the PVC flange. This
often happens when ceramic tile
is installed where formerly there
was only vinyl.

REMOVE THE OLD

lumbers are among the most

expensive skilled trades
around. Between the fees
charged for just showing up at your
house, known in the vernacular
as a "service call", to the $85-perhour labor rate, parts and fuel surcharges, plumbers are not cheap.
I'm not knocking plumbers and I've
used my fair share in the past, but
I've always watched what they did
and after seeing it, I've wished Id
just done the job myself.
We've all heard that most accidents happen in the home, and
it's true. They do. Thanks to a
recent household accident I had
to replace a commode in one of
our bathrooms because the tank

66

had been broken. If you have

pre-teen or teenage children,
then you know what kind of mischief they can cause without
even trying to do so.
I began this project by going to
my local box store and buying a
new commode and a new wax
ring. Commodes are secured in
place by bolting the base of the
toilet onto a PVC flange located
at the top of the drain pipe in the
floor. A wax ring is used to form a
watertight seal between the base
of the commode and the top of
the drain. It resembles a giant
doughnut made of wax, and some
have a funnel-shaped piece of
plastic attached to the bottom to

The next step is to remove the

old commode. Begin by making
sure that the water supply line is
turned off at the shut-off valve
under the toilet. If your commode
does not have its own shut-off
valve, youill need to turn off the
main valve for the entire house
and then bleed off the pressure
by turning on the faucet of another fixture until the water stops
running.
With the water off, flush the
commode to drain the water out of
the tank. With the tank empty, use
a pair of Channellocks to unscrew
the supply line from the bottom of
the toilet tank. Make sure you
have a bucket and an old towel
handy because there will still be
water in the supply line and it will
need to be poured into something

to keep if off the floor. There will
also be some residual water in
the bottom of the tank.
The next step is actually one
of the hardest and the most

unpleasant. The water inside of

the toilet bowel should be drained
out. If this water is not emptied
from the bowl it will run out the
bottom of the toilet when it is

moved. In theory, this water should
not leak out even after the toilet
has been disconnected and lifted
off the floor, provided that the toilet remains perfectly level. This is
nearly impossible, however, so it's
smart to drain as much water as
you can. One way to accomplish
this is to use a plunger and force
as much down the drain as you
can. Another way is to use a small,
disposable cup and bail the water
out. If you choose the latter option
make sure to wear latex gloves
and thoroughly wash your hands
afterwards.
With the water supply line
turned off, the tank emptied and
the bowl drained, it is now safe to
disconnect the commode from the
floor. This is done very easily by
popping off the plastic caps on
either side of the commode's
base with a screwdriver and then

68

unfastening the nuts with a

wrench or socket. The bolts are
attached to the flange so they will
not come out on their own. The
commode will lift off these two
bolts after the nuts have been
removed.
Removal and installation of a
toilet is preferably a two-man job.
A porcelain commode that is emptied of all of its water is still heavy
and is unbalanced because of the
position of the tank. Most commodes weigh in excess of 75 lbs.
and are best lifted by two people
with each standing on either side
of the commode. One hand is
placed under the tank and the
other under the front of the bowl.
Both people then lift straight up
simultaneously, remembering to
lift from the knees and not with
the back.
Carry the old commode outside
immediately after removing it

because the bottom of it will have

some of the old wax ring stuck to
it. If you are doing this job alone,
the easiest way to maneuver a
commode is to straddle the bowl

with your body facing the toilet

tank. This will allow you to pick up
the commode by either placing
your hands under the bottom of
the tank or around either side of

the neck that connects the tank to
the bowl. This neck is just about
the center of gravity for a commode. It can be a little awkward
walking with a toilet bowl between
your legs but it is manageable.
With the old commode out of
the way, you should then scrape
clean the PVC flange on the floor
drain with a putty knife. Again, be

when you're doing this job. I keep

a plastic grocery bag handy and
scrape the old wax directly into
the bag for easy disposal.

INSTALL THE NEW

Begin installation of the new
commode by removing the top of
the tank so it won't fall off and
break. Tilt the commode and
attach the wax ring to the bottom
by centering it over the trap's exit
hole and simply sticking it against
the bottom of the commode. The
adhesive nature of the wax will
hold it in place long enough to
secure the commode to the floor
drain. As you set it down, be sure
that you line up the two bolts that
are protruding from the PVC flange
with the holes that are on either
side of the commodes base. Set
the commode in place as evenly

as possible so the wax ring will
spread around the entire circumference of the drain hole. If one
side is set in place before the
other side, then all of the wax
may squeeze unevenly over to

the other side, which will cause

a leak.
Once the commode has been
set in place, but before youve put
the nuts on the flange bolts, straddle the toilet bowl and sit down on

it. Then you should gently rock it

from side to side and then front
to back. Do this several times to
help spread out the wax for a
watertight seal. Remember, the
wax ring is the only thing that is
preventing the toilet's waste water
from running onto the floor when
it is flushed.
The next step is to attach the
washers and nuts to the bolts
protruding through the base and

tighten them in place. A word of

caution: Do not over-tighten the
nuts. Porcelain, unlike wood, will
crack or break if it is subjected to
too much pressure. It's also a
good idea to run a bead of silicone
around the base of the
commode. This will also help to
keep it from moving and seals
the bottom edge.
However, make sure that you
leave a weeping hole in the front
and back of this bead of caulk in
case the wax ring failed to seal
correctly. If there is not a weeping
hole then any water that leaks out
will build up under the commode
and rot the floor and subfloor.
After about a week's time without
seeing any water it is then safe to

go back and add enough silicone

to close up these holes.
This same gasket-replacement
procedure is used to fix a commode that leaks around the base
due to the failure of an old wax

ring. The only difference is that

the original commode is being
re-used, which requires that
the bottom of the commode be
scraped free of any old wax that
has stuck to it.

The wax will adhere the gasket to

the bottom of the bowl.

Carefully lower the commode over

the flange bolts, centering the
gasket over the drain and keeping the bowl as level as possible.

The final plumbing step is to

re-connect the water supply line
to the bottom of the toilet tank.
Normally just hand-tightening this
connection will suffice, but if that's
not enough then a half to full turn
with a pair of Channellocks will
do the job. Remember to turn the
shut-off valve back on slowly so
you do not allow a sudden blast of
pressurized water to shoot through
your new connection, possibly
causing a leak.
The only step remaining to finish the project is to install a toilet
seat. This is just a matter of aligning the plastic bolts on the seat's
hardware with the holes in the
neck that connects the bowl and
tank together. Plastic nuts screw
onto the bolts to secure the seat
in place. When tightening the
nuts, it is usually a good idea to

DO IT YOURSELF
insert a screwdriver into the
slots on the top of the bolts and
then use your hand or a pair of
Channellocks to tighten the nuts.
Toilet seats take a lot of abuse
from people wiggling and moving
so it is important that these bolts

Attach the tank using a new

SECURE-A-TANK
Designed to prevent leaks and damage caused by the gap between the toilet
tank and wall, Secure-A-Tank is a fully adjustable brace which secures the toilet to
prevent take movement. Without the support of the wall, any pressure against the
tank produces significant strain on the bolts that connect the tank to the bowl. Over
time the stress can crack the tank or deform the gaskets that keep water from leaking through the bolt holes. Secure-A-Tank can be cut to size so that it fits the gap to
enhance stability and support. The extension and clip pieces are quick to assemble,
and the brace is easy to install on the back edge of the tank. The lid fits over the
clips and hides the already clear Secure-A-Tank braces. Visit secureatank.com.

Fighting Mold in the Home

By Tom Matthews
old is a top concern for
indoor air quality and
remains a common problem in homes across the country.
Mold and mildew are both types
of fungi and are similar in many
ways. From causing musty smells
to serious allergic reactions,
indoor mold and mildew can be a
pesky nuisance or a real health
hazard. EHT offers a few handy
tips to help fight these problems
around your house.

SPOT THE SPORES

Mold is typically fuzzy in appearance and can be seen in many
colors, including blue, green,
yellow, brown, gray, black or
white. Mold can cause structural

78

www.extremehowto.com

damage to homes over time and

lead to health problems, including
respiratory problems, migraines
and more.
Mildew usually grows in a flat
pattern and may appear either
powdery or downy. Powdery
mildew usually starts out white
and may later turn yellow, brown
or black. Downy mildew usually
starts out yellow and later turns
brown. Like mold, it can also
cause respiratory problems and
allergic reactions.
Look for visible signs of mold
and mildew around your home.
Musty odors can be a sign of
mold growth, but such a smell
may also indicate mice infestation. Microfungal growth of mold

Mold can be a serious problem,

causing unsightly stains, lingering odors, potential structural
and surface damage and
adverse health effects for
allergy sensitive individuals.

and mildew can sometimes be

difficult to see. One trick is to
shine a flashlight nearly parallel
to the lower portion of wall or
leg of furniture. Look for fuzzy
white, pale yellow or blue-green
spots. These are likely mold
colonies, and when disturbed
these spores can become airborne.

SKILL SAVVY
TIPS FOR CLEANING
MOLD AND MILDEW
When cleaning mildew and
mold, ensure your work area is
well-ventilated because many

mold/mildew cleaners give off

fumes that are harmful to breathe.
Wear a facial mask to prevent
breathing in mold or mildew
spores as well as to protect

yourself from breathing fumes

given off by the cleaning product.
Wear rubber gloves to protect your
hands, and use an antimicrobial
mold and mildew remover.
Not all household cleaning products and bathroom cleansers will
do the job. For example, bleach is
commonly used to clean mold and
mildew but it has harsh fumes and
can be toxic. Although bleach can
kill the spores and give the surface a spiffy appearance, bleach
won't prevent the mold from
returning to the surface. It may
look clean once youre done, but
the mold will grow back within
weeks. Bleach is also particularly
ineffective at treating mold on
porous surfaces such as drywall,
lumber and grout.

Zinsser Mold Killing Primer can

be used to paint over and kill
existing surface mold, mildew
and odor-causing bacteria. It
can be applied directly over
problem areas without extensive surface preparation and
contains an EPA-registered
antimicrobial agent to prevent
the growth of mold and mildew
on paint film. This water-based
primer can be used on both
non-porous interior and exterior
surfaces, and is recommended
for bathrooms, basements,
window frames and more.

SKILL SAVVY
One other issue with bleach:
When it attacks surface mold, it
leaves a carbon layer residue that
prevents other antimicrobial products from penetrating to the mold
roots or hyphae, which can limit
the products effectiveness. If
youve already treated a moldy
area with bleach in the past, you
should first wipe the area down
with warm water and detergent
to remove the layer. Once the area
is dry, apply the antimicrobial
product according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Use your antimicrobial cleaner
to clean the surrounding area as
well as the area where you actually see mold and mildew, to make
sure you remove all traces of the
substances.
Remove materials that cannot
be thoroughly cleaned of mold and
mildew, like insulation, carpeting
or drywall, and replace those with
new, mold-free materials.

Concrobium is a new way to fight mold that works on all kinds of surfaces.
Concrobium Mold Control sprays on surfaces to eliminate and prevent mold.
It works as it dries, reaching right down to the roots to solve your mold
problem once and for all. Another option is the Concrobium Mold Stain
Eraser, ideal for outdoor mold staining on decks and patios. Its bleach-free,
so it wont ruin sensitive surfaces, and it gets rid of mold staining with no
scrubbing or elbow grease.

SKILL SAVVY
COMMON PROBLEM
AREAS
The presence of moisture is the
biggest contributor to mold growth,
and to fight the infestation you
should conduct a room-by-room
assessment of the house to identify problem areas. The moisture
can come from condensation due
to poor ventilation, from a water
leak or from outdoor intrusion.
Crawlspaces and Basements.
Surfaces in these below-grade
areas of the home should be as
clean as the other areas of the
home. Install lights to keep an eye
on plumbing leaks. Use a concrete
paint to coat concrete floors for
easier cleaning, and if possible,
use a HEPA vacuum to clean the
floor and walls annually. For dirt
floors, cover the dirt with crushed
stone, a vapor barrier and even

84

www.extremehowto.com

concrete. Consider using a dehumidifier during the warmer months.

Isolate a moldy basement from
habitable spaces by closing all
access openings leading from the
basement to the rooms above.
Foundation. Water can enter
the home through foundation
walls due to hydrostatic pressure,
so it's critical to have the ground
around your home graded away
from the foundation walls for proper drainage. The slope should
always fall away from the house
(never toward), dropping 6 inches
for every 6 linear feet. Consider
installing French drains to divert
ground runoff in problem areas,
and use gutters and downspouts
to manage the roof runoff, directing it away from the house. Keep
the gutters clean so they drain
easily.

Bathrooms and kitchens.

Mold/mildew-resistant paint and
caulk products help to fight common problems in the kitchen and
bathroom. These two rooms are
most prone to moisture retention
and therefore should have exhaust
fans. The fans should always
remain in good working order,
and you should verify that they
are venting through the roof and
not into the attic.
Attic. While in the attic, if you
can see the bathroom exhaust
hose or kitchen exhaust duct,
make sure it vents to the exterior
and does not terminate inside the
attic. If this is not the case, a vent
kit will need to be installed to
make connection to the exterior.
The air in the attic should be dry
and fresh, which indicates adequate ventilation. A stuffy, musty

attic indicates poor ventilation, requiring installation of vent fans, ridge

vents, soffit vents, etc.
To check if exhaust fans are venting into the attic, have someone turn
the fans on and off while you're in
the attic. Listen and look for signs
of airflow such as moving dust or
insulation.
Check attic ducts and piping to the
indoor AC unit for signs of moisture
which indicate poor insulation. Wrap
any cold water pipes with foam-tube
insulation to prevent sweating.
In cool climates, look for condensation on roofing nails. Also, install an
insulated attic door cover with a gasket to prevent the flow of moist air
from the house.

5-MINUTE MOLD TEST

Before spending your hard-earned money on those "instant" mold kits, get the
facts. The Healthful Home 5-Minute Mold Test is the one test that "send-in" labs
don't want you to know about. Do your own testing quickly and easily while saving
money as compared to those "low budget" mold kits. Why wait 48 hours for a culture dish to incubate or use "instant" blue protein tests if they don't tell you anything useful? Why wait another 7 days or more for a lab to tell you what's on the
culture dish and pay additional fees of $40 or more? The 5-Minute Mold Test gives
results in minutes and provides specific detection of the most worrisome molds
associated with water damage and illness as determined by the US EPA.
Unlike other products that offer mail-in testing, the 5-minute Home Mold
Test includes specific antibody-based tests against more than 32 different
Aspergillus/Penicillium and Stachybotrys mold types (the types that cause illness).
Worried about your air quality? Test the settled dust in the room of concern. Or,
just sample suspect areas of possible contamination. Using the same proven lateral flow assay technology employed in medical laboratories, these tests have been
validated in an EPA-licensed and AIHA-accredited environmental lab as the most

to offer portable 4,000- and 7,000-watt electric start generators.
With a lifespan of up to eight times longer than other brands, the
Powerhorse generators deliver reliability with an affordable price
tag.Powerhorse generators are most commonly used to provide
power for tools and air compressors at a jobsite, home appliances
during a power outage, and items used during outdoor activities
such as camping or tailgating. The electric start feature on the new
generators allow users to simply press a button to get vital appliances and tools up and running in minutes, without the added
exertion of manually starting the generator. From the industrialstrength cast iron cylinder sleeves to the dual bearing forged crankshafts, the Powerhorse OHV engines are built to last. Copperwound heads allow the generators to run at full load continuously
for weeks without overheating, and all units have a clean power
output that is stable and consistent to ensure sensitive electronics
such as your computer, TV or refrigerator are protected and function properly. Powerhorse generators are also equipped with a volt
meter to maintain and monitor stable power, an extended-run fuel
tank to reduce the fuel refilling, and a quiet muffler to keep noise
levels down. Visit www.northerntool.com.
