UNITED KINGDOM

School system of
the United Kingdom
The UK school system prepares students for a specialized
education at some of the worlds top universities.

Primary school: Ages 5-11

Compulsory education begins at age five when students progress from
Grade 1 to Grade 6, learning subjects such as English, Mathematics and
Science.
Secondary school: Ages 11-16
From the age of 11, students attend secondary school. In Grade 10 and
Grade 11, students prepare for their General Certificate of Secondary
Education (GCSEs), an academic qualification awarded in up to 10
subjects.
A-levels at a sixth form college: Ages 16-18
After taking GCSEs, students can choose to pursue training at a
vocational college or apprenticeship, or continue academic study for two
additional years in order prepare for exams called A-levels. Students
study three or four subjects only, which are normally related to their
desired degree subject. Their A-level grades are determining factors in
university admittance.
The bachelors degree: Ages 18-21
Undergraduate students in the UK typically pursue a bachelors degree
which specialises in one subject for three years. Entrance requirements
for international students include English proficiency (with a minimum
IELTS level 6.0) and an additional year of secondary school, known as a
EF University Foundation Program, which is equivalent to Grade 13.
Masters, MBA or PhD degrees: Ages 21+
A traditional Masters or MBA degree typically lasts one year, and requires
both exams and a thesis to graduate. Some specialized careers require
the completion of a doctoral program or PhD, which includes four to five
years of advanced study and research. For most of these programs,
international students are required to have a recognized undergraduate
degree and an English level of at least IELTS level 6.5. MBA programs
normally require at least two years of work experience.

A rich history of academia

As one of the oldest states in the whole of America, New Hampshire boasts a colonial
history that you wont find anywhere else. Its a state that combines iconic landmarks
and small-town American life with incredible scenery all of which have inspired some
of the most famous individuals in US history, including poets Henry David Thoreau
and Robert Frost, amongst others. Explore the New Hampshire countryside and climb
rugged mountains, relax on sandy beaches, and take up outdoor pursuits like hiking
and snowsports.
A university of presidential proportions
Our New Hampshire programs are located on the campus of Franklin Pierce University
a college named after the 14th president of the United States, himself a New
Hampshire resident. The university is located in the Monadnock region, less than
two hours drive from Boston. On campus, youll find a fitness center, dance studio
and ampitheater amongst other excellent amenities. Student life couldnt be more
enjoyable, with expansive grounds to take in the calm New England setting and plenty
of places to socialize with other students. Youll live alongside real American students
on campus and immerse yourself in an authentic American college experience.

Build valuable skills and credentials by studying in Australia,
an increasingly popular study destination that welcomes
students from around the globe.

Primary and secondary school

Education in Australia is compulsory for eleven years, but universitybound students study for thirteen. Australian students study from
Kindergarten to Grade 10, with the option of an additional two years to
gain entrance to university. The curriculum is nationalized across Australia
with students learning core subjects such as English, Mathematics,
Science, Social Studies and Physical Education. At the end of Grade 10,
students sit their School Certificate examinations. They can then choose
to leave school and enter the workforce, attend a vocational school or
continue studying for two more years to complete their Year 12 Certificate,
required for university studies.
Bachelors degrees
Upon completion of their Year 12 Certificate, students in Australia usually
undertake a bachelors program for three to six years. In addition to their
Year 12 certificate equivalence, international students are required to
demonstrate English fluency, which can be provided by an internationally
recognized test result, such as an IELTS of 6.0 or higher. Successful
completion of the EF University Foundation Program can waive the
language requirement for entry to our many partner universities, as well as
preparing students for the academic demands of university.

GERMANY

School system
of Germany
The German school system prepares students for a
specialized education at the countrys top universities.

Grundschule: Ages 6/7-10/12 (varies between states)

From the age of six or seven, children attend an elementary school
called Grundschule.
Hauptschule and Realschule: Grades 5-9 or 5-10
Hauptschule prepares pupils for vocational education and finishes with
the Hauptschulabschluss. Realschule has a broader range of
emphasis for intermediate pupils and finishes with the final examination
Mittlere Reife.

Masters, MBA or PhD degrees: Ages 21+

A masters or MBA degree typically lasts one year, and requires both
exams and a thesis to graduate. Some specialized careers require the
completion of a doctoral program or PhD, which includes four to five
years of advanced study and research. For most of these programs,
international students are required to have a recognized undergraduate
degree and a German level of at least C1. MBA programs normally require
at least two years of work experience.

Gymnasium: Grades 11-12/13

Gymnasium is designed to prepare pupils for university and finishes with
the final examination Abitur, a qualification awarded in up to 10 subjects
after grade 12, mostly year 13. After the Abitur, students can choose
to enter the workforce, pursue training at a vocational college or enter
university. Abitur is the academic qualification required to be admitted to
German universities.
University
Undergraduate students in Germany typically pursue a bachelors degree
which specializes in one subject for three years. Entrance requirements
for international students include a German proficiency test (TestDaF)
and if the students high school diploma is not considered equivalent to
the Abitur an additional year of secondary school in Germany, known as
Studienkolleg, which is the equivalent to grade 13 at Gymnasium.
Universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) focus on a practical
scientific approach. The range of subjects is generally not as extensive
and is focused on certain subject areas, such as technology, industry,
social affairs or media. The integrated practical phases are comprised of
internships spanning several weeks, extended project phases or entire
practical semesters.
