The Body: The body of the essay will be where you spend ample time developing the differing
perspectives/stances that surround your topic/issue and relate to your research question. In
each paragraph:

Address one specific argument/viewpoint you are researching in your sources that
relates to your research question and why that argument/viewpoint is
important/relevant to your research question.
Demonstrate that the specific argument/viewpoint you are focusing on in the paragraph
has merit and is relevant to the conversations taking place that relate to your
topic/issue and research question.
Synthesize, at minimum, two sources within each paragraph to demonstrate that
multiple sources are sharing the same arguments/viewpoints you are addressing.

For the body of your essay, you will have at least four developed paragraphs that are focusing
on different arguments/viewpoints related to your research question.

Conclusion: Finally, the conclusion of the essay component of the Pre-Search Essay is where
you bring all the information you have been researching related to your research question and
begin to formulate the argument you want to address in your Research Essay. Here you will:

Give a brief summarization of the information you have presented within your essay.

Research Essayessentially answer your research question with a working thesis.
Discuss why you have chosen your position/argument.
What audience you want to appeal to as you present your position/argument.
How is your argument going to be contributing to and adding new perspectives on the
scholarly conversations you have been reading about your topic through your research?

Annotated Bibliography:

This is the second component of your Pre-Search Essay where you will be putting together the 8
or more sources you have chosen, critically read, and annotated throughout the project. This
annotated bibliography will be a strong overview of your sources and the value they have
towards your research and Research project. For each source you must:

Cite the source in correct MLA/APA format

Develop 3-4 sentences briefly summarizing the entire source
Develop a longer, more detailed paragraph explaining the significance of the source,
how it is relevant to the research question and research you are doing, how it helps
work with the thesis you are developing, any drawbacks you notice in the source, and
strengths that help the source work for your project.

Research Findings Presentation: You will present on your research project and process. This
presentation is to practice writing for oral delivery; to reflect on the research paper and the research
process; and to share your experiences as a writer and researcher with me and your classmates.
Grade: Part of participation grade
Your presentation should address the following questions:
Explain your choice of topic-why does it interest you? Why did you want to research it?
How did you go about researching this topic? What sources did you use? Where did you search
and how did you know to search there? What research strategies did you use? What changes
did you have to make to your research strategies and/or research materials?
What discoveries did you make about your topic and about the research process?
Speculate as to what you will do with the information (both the content of the research paper
and the research process itself) learned and knowledge made from this project.

Length and Format

The presentation should be between 5-8 minutes. Practice and time yourself: you should speak
for the full length of time. Be prepared to answer questions at the end of your presentation.
You will need to use Power Point, Prezi, or another presentation tool to compliment the oral
presentation. Review this Slide Share presentation about effective Power Point design and take
it into consideration as you work the slideshow we viewed in class.
Make sure to include a title slide with the title of your presentation, the project youre
presenting on (if not part of your title), and your name.
Do not read your slides. Have note cards, a script, or memorize what youre going to say. The
slides are for your audience and to supplement your talk, not notes or you.
Speak slowly, loudly, clearly, and make eye contact with your audience.
Though not a requirement, consider providing a handout for every member of the audience.
Think of the handout as a way of making the presentation more accessible for the audience,
highlighting crucial elements of the presentation, and providing resources for those interested
in exploring your project and its materials further. Review this article about presentation
handouts for tips: http://www.speakingaboutpresenting.com/delivery/presentation-handouts/
