Galvashield MA

constructive solutions

Galvanic corrosion protection system for

severe exposure concrete elements
Uses
Galvashield MA is designed to actively protect reinforced
concrete subject to the most severe exposure conditions
where chloride ion ingress is a cause for concern. Typical
applications include:
Structural jetty elements, pipeline supports in Sabkah
soils, equipment foundations, columns, beams, etc.
Advantages
No post installation maintenance required.
May be installed on existing or new structures.
Self-powered and self-regulating.
Standard compliance

Longest life expectancy of any galvanic system.

Galvashield MA will, when installed and connected in

accordance with approved instructions, exceed the
minimum 15 years life criteria laid down by FHWA and
DOT specifications. The design of Galvashield MA follows
comprehensive criteria established for the patented
Galvashield XP system developed by Fosroc.

Installation supervised and checked by Fosroc

Technicians.
Quick, easy and low cost installation, no costly
electrical work or monthly monitoring.
Fully compatible with Renderoc repair materials.

Specification Clause

Description

The galvanic protection system shall be the Galvashield

MA system. The installation of the system shall be
supervised and checked by the manufacturer.

Galvashield MA is a galvanic protection system based

upon the installation of a zinc mesh anode system
conforming to ASTM A-190.
The anode system is
connected to the steel reinforcement to provide the
required protective current to the steel. The anode system
is overlayed with an electro active mortar when fixed.

Instruction for use

Preparation
In order for Galvashield MA to function correctly, steel
reinforcing must be continuous, if not; continuity must be
established throughout the structure prior to making
connection (see detailed method statement).

Galvashield MA can be applied to rectangular, circular or

flat substrate profiles.
Design criteria

Make any repairs to the substrate using Renderoc repair

products as necessary prior to commencing the
Galvashield MA preparation procedures. Grit or water
blast the substrate to remove all coatings, laitence,
grease, marine fouling or any other deleterious material.

Galvashield MA is a galvanic protection system utilising

the proven principle of galvanic protection to provide long
term durability to both new and existing structures in
conditions of extreme exposure as may be encountered in
near marine environments.

An electric drill fitted with a 20 mm bit is to be used to drill

to the rebar at selected locations and expose clean, bright
steel. Using a high impedance multi-meter, check the
continuity between rebar sites (see detailed method
statement).

In line with other galvanic protection systems, Galvashield

MA must be designed and the installation supervised by a
specialist in the field of corrosion control.

Galvashield MA
Precautions

Cathode connections are to be made between the

Galvashield MA sheet and the reinforcing steel as detailed
in the system method statement. Each Galvashield MA
sheet is to electrically connected to adjacent sheets by
soldering. On completion of installation electrical continuity
checks are to be made between the Galvashield MA sheets
and the reinforcing steel as detailed in the system method
statement.

Health and safety

There are no known health and safety hazards associated
with Galvashield MA.
For health and safety requirements on e-Mortar M015 refer

Mesh fixing procedure

to the product material safety data sheet.

The Galvashield MA mesh is fixed to the substrate using a

Hilti nail gun firing 25 mm nails and washers. 25 nos nails
shall be used every square meter (see detailed method
statement).
Overlay procedure
Mix e-Mortar M015 in accordance with the data sheet
instructions. Using suitable wet spray equipment; apply the
product to the zinc mesh. The direction of the spray should
be such that the zinc mesh is fully encapsulated. Spraying
shall continue until such time as the material thickness
reaches 15 mm when measured from the substrate. The eMortar M015 when applied is to be wood trowelled flat but
not polished smooth. The applied
e-Mortar M015
must be cured by covering with a securely taped down
polythene sheet and protected from the sun for 7 days. The
application is to take place within 24 hours from the time of
fixing Galvashield MA. The e-Mortar M015 is not to be
coated subsequent to application.
Estimating
Supply
Galvashield MA is supplied in sheet form ready to use,
some cutting may be required on site to suit particular
design features.
