INTRODUCTION
The spark from heaven falls, who picks it
up? The Crowd? Never. The Individual? Always. It is he and he alone, as
artist, inventor, explorer, scholar, scientist, spiritual leader or statesmen,
who stand nearest to the source of and transmits his essence to the
fellowmen. For supplementing the teaching of science in classroom and to
widen the knowledge of his students a good science teacher can involve his
students in a number of co-curricular activities such as the science club,
scientific hobbies, visits of places of scientific interest broad-cast talks,
gramophones lectures etc. Though there is no limit to such extracurricular
activities and teacher is free to undertake one or more such activities in his
school for the benefit of his student. Each individual has his own interest,
talents and abilities. Even a progressive syllabus fails to cater to the needs
of each. Science educators, now a days are found to exhibit growing interest
and means of stimulating group participation and mobilizing interest in
learning science. Organizing science clubs is one among such activities.
Learning by doing and learning by living are
two essentials of learning science. Children are interested in making things
and handling things. But the curriculum does not satisfy this natural urge.
In the classroom everything is done in a formal, artificial and controlled
atmosphere. This will never give opportunity for a child for his free flight in
the world of science. Our classroom teaching does not provide opportunity
for self expression. No time is assigned for practical work. All these lead to
the need for an organization providing an outlet for the pent up emotions
of children. These needs are catered with the help of science clubs in
schools.

SCIENCE CLUB
An organization which caters for the
inculcation of scientific attitude and a genuine interest in science, and also
can supplement the work of the classroom and give the syllabus a practical
dimension may be called a science club. Such a club then forms the
backbone of the co-curricular activities in the school. Such clubs if properly
organized, will be great help to create interest in teaching of science and so
now the importance and educational value of such club is duly recognized.
Such clubs provide better chances to acquaint the students with various
facts and principles of science.

1. TYPES OF SCIENCE CLUBS

Science clubs can be classified as
a) The specialized interest science clubs such as radio club,
nature study club .etc
b) General science club such as chemical society, botany
clubetc
2. OBJECTIVES OF SCIENCE CLUBS
i. To develop general interest in science
ii. To inculcate scientific attitude and provide opportunities for
training in scientific method
iii. To develop interest in scientific hobbies
iv. To develop habits of exploration and creative faculties
v. To encourage individual and group activities
vi. To develop in children a sense of healthy competition
vii. To make the students and public science minded
viii. To stimulate active participation and initiative among
students in the learning process
ix. To keep the students in touch with the recent advances in
science
x. To provide challenging opportunities for the gifted

3. ORGANISATION OF SCIENCE CLUBS

A properly organized science club will be a valuable aid to
teaching science and also means of motivating the children for
learning science. The successful working of the club depends on the
4

person who organize it and also on the enthusiasm of students.

Though science club is run by the students, for the students, the
science teacher is the pivot of all activities.
To begin with, the science teacher can explain the importance
and benefits of organizing science club and can arouse enthusiasm
among students. This discussion may be followed by a business
meeting in which office bearers are chosen. Every science club should
have its own constitution. There should be a general body an
executive body. The Principal or Headmaster should be the patron
and the science teachers should be the sponsors. Executive members
such as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, librarian,
publicity officer, etc are chosen from among the student members.
The executive committee has to chalk out programs. The activities of
the club should be taken up by the students themselves. There should
be regular meetings, discussions, planning, feedback, etc.

CONCLUSION
Through activities of science club, learning of
science become joyful. From the views expressed above we can clearly see
that there is complete freedom for the students to pursue his interests in a
science club and he can choose his own project and his own method to
pursue the project so chosen. This atmosphere that prevails in a science
club is totally different from the one that prevails in a classroom. The club
represents freedom and expression whereas the class-room represents
conformity and repression. There is no doubt about the fact that if the club
activities are organized properly they will never interfere with class room
teaching.
