Assignment 1

Due September 29th, 2015 at 10:30am

Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling
Em Asbill
Note: These observations were taken over the first 30 minutes of the first three Harry Potter
Films. These film s are Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of
Secrets, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The times that are listed are the times as
the film progress, for example 1 minute means one minute into the film. For an extra vocabulary
list look before the description of actors.
Figured World: A figured world is a large social structure with its own set of rules and
conventions on the proper way to behave and act inside the world.
Harry Potter for the majority of the films takes place at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and
Wizardry, a boarding school meant to educate and help those born with magical abilities to
safely use and develop their powers. The school has different kinds of classes all of which use
different forms of communications, such as textbooks, lectures, and notes. There are always
several different activities happening at once, sometimes while a game of Quidditch is being
played, the most popular wizarding sport played on broomsticks 50 feet up in the air, Hermione
Granger can be spotted studying for a transfiguration exam. The rules at Hogwarts are very clear
for the most part, there is no use of magic in the corridors, hexing of other students is strictly
prohibited, students will not leave school grounds unless receiving permission from an adult
during or after their third year. Some unspoken rules, or conventions, include the house rivalry
between Gryffindor and Slytherin, only the Slytherins will pass Professor Snapes potions class
even if they do little to no work, Lord Voldemorts name is not to be spoken out loud, and the
pureblood families are seen by some (most of whom are in the house Slytherin) as much better
than those of non-magical parents, or one magical parent and a non-magical parent. It would be
very normal to see someone practicing their wand movements and performing spell, however it
would be highly unacceptable for a student to use those spells on someone whom they are trying
to make fun of and bully.
Helpful Vocabulary
(These words are in alphabetical order, not in the order they appear throughout this assignment)
Azkaban: The wizarding prison that criminals and followers of Lord Voldemort are sent to. It is
guarded by creatures call Dementors whom have the ability to steal your soul by kissing you.
Diagon Ally: A magical shopping center hidden in the heart of London.

Commented [EA1]: Adding that the observations were

taken over the first 30 minutes of the movies is helpful.
It makes it easier for the reader understand the
observations. It was also nice that you included the
three movies titles you observed, so that way the
reader is aware of what has been observed.
Claire Hibbert

Commented [EA2]: I like your descriptive vocabulary,

however, who is Hermione Granger? Is there a better
way to introduce the reader to Hermione Granger?
Maybe add before that she is one of harry Potter's
closest friend, etc.
Claire Hibbert
Commented [EA3]: Personally, not knowing much
about Harry Potter you went into a lot of detail which
helps me understand what is going on. I was hesitant
at first knowing that you chose Harry Potter because I
know absolutely nothing about it. Going into detail was
beneficial but there might be some places where it may
seem like you're going above and beyond in your detail
but it will be really useful to those who don't know what
is going on.
Haley Cutrell
Commented [EA4]: I believe the Vocab was a great
plus for people like me who know nothing about the
actors, or the conventions, etc.. The Vocab list is very
beneficial and it will definitely be helpful to look back at
when reading your observations. Good job on adding
these specific terms to help understand your paper
easier.
Haley Cutrell

collected a large group of followers who called themselves Death Eaters. He was defeated by
Harry Potter as an infant after killing the boys parents.
Muggle: Someone who has no magical abilities, they most commonly know little to nothing
about the magical world around them.
Professor Snape: A professor at Hogwarts, he is the Head of Slytherin House, meaning he is the

known to be particularly harsh to those in Gryffindor House.
Quidditch: This is a sport played in the wizarding world. It is the most watched sport, having
different leagues. It is played on broomsticks 50 feet up in the air with the main objective of
scoring points in hoops placed on either sides of a field.
Sorcerers Stone: This is a red ruby like object with several different powers that are highly
sought after. The stone has the power to keep someone alive forever, the owner of the stone
having lived to be 665 years old before the stone was destroyed.
Slytherin: This is one of the 4 houses at Hogwarts. Slytherin is better known for its extensive
history of producing wizards whom focus on the dark side of magic.
The Fat Lady: The portrait that guards the entrance to the Gryffindors dormitories.
Actors: Actors are people who play a certain part or role in a community, they fulfill a certain
purpose of the community they are in.
Harry Potter: Harry Potter fills the role of nephew, and a servant, to his aunt and uncle as well as
student to the professors at Hogwarts. He is friends with many people he meets at school as well
as those he meets out with Hagrid.

Commented [EA5]: Are there anymore characters that

are important in these movies? I feel like there could be
more actors added to the list. I think if you add a few
more that will help those who don't know the story
better understand what is going on.
Haley Cutrell

Dobby: Dobby fills the role of protector to Harry Potter. His main objective when in the film was
to keep Harry away from Hogwarts so he would stay safe.
Artifacts: Artifacts are the different emotions, ideas, and physical items that are important to
characters in the community and help to develop their role in a community.
Magic: Those in the wizarding world rely on their abilities for things such as washing dishes and
completing knitting projects. However they are also used to make objects such as a car fly, and a
tree to come to life. These powers are needed in their everyday lives.
The Communities of Practice: A group of people who share a common goal or interest and a set
of ways of communicating to reach their common goal.
Hogwarts: The students who participate and study at Hogwarts are all attempting to reach the
same goal of understand how magic works and how to control their magic. The professors are
there to help teach and guide the students in this goal as well as to provide examples of how the
students should use their abilities correctly.
The Practices of the Community: Something everyone in the community does that helps them as
a group reach their shared goal.
Secrecy: Those in the magical community work to assure their magical abilities are kept secret
from muggles. The powers of the witches and wizards are kept secret because they it is crucial to

Commented [EA6]: Why are they needed?

Haley Cutrell
Commented [EA7]: Magic seems like it would be a
major artifacts, and I liked how you explained it, but are
there anymore artifacts? Is there anything else is the
Hogwarts community that is important for individuals to
have, such as a wand? I think one or two more artifacts
would help the reader understand more about the
importance of artifacts throughout the film.
Claire Hibbert
Commented [EA8]: I think some of the terms that only
have one example could have more examples added. I
think if you add more it will help clarify any unspecified
details that haven't been clarified yet through terms or
the detailed observations. Otherwise, good job on
explaining your examples so that they are descriptive
and easy to understand.
Haley Cutrell

their way of life, those without magic would not be able to understand the importance of the
powers so it is kept hidden.
The Domain: A domain is the shared goal or focus of a community of practice, it is the main
linkage between all those in the community to reach the goal through working together
Harry Potter: The main way most are connected in this community is they all have an interaction
with Harry. He is the linkage between the magical and non-magical members.
Magic: All those in the community either poses or know of the Wizarding World hidden
throughout the United Kingdom.
Literacy Practice: A way of communicating throughout a community, how the people in the
community are able to stay in contact with one another.
Letters: There is a large number of letters in this section of them movie, the majority of which
seem to be hand written. Harry receives letters from Hogwarts and Hagrid, while Dumbledore
leaves a letter with Harry in the opening scene addressed to his aunt and uncle.
Pictures: Everywhere in the Dursleys home are pictures of Dudley, conveying the message that
another young person doesnt live there. Harry Looks over the pictures he has of his parents as a
way to remember them, and to learn more about what they were like, because he never got to
know them.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone observations:

0 Minutes: The scene opens up to Private Drive at night, Dumbledore puts the lights out on the
street, making it almost completely dark and creating a darker mood. He greets McGonagall, she
asks about the rumors and if they were true, and Dumbledore tells her that he is afraid they are
all true, the good and the bad. A man on flying motorbike comes and delivers a sleeping baby
boy. Dumbledore is planning on leaving the child with his only remaining family to make sure
he grows up away from the world where everyone would know his name.
4 Minutes: Harry is woken to the sound of his aunt shouting at him to get up, while his cousin
is stomping down the stairs making sure to shove him back into the cupboard under the stairs,
where he sleeps, on the way into the kitchen. We find out that it is Dudleys birthday, whom is
very upset about the fact that he has one present than he had last year. To calm him down Petunia
has to promise to buy him two new presents while they are out for his birthday. As they are
getting into the car Uncle Vernon pulls Harry aside and tells him that if theres any funny
business while they are out he will not get any meals for a week.
6 Minutes: The scene opens up to the reptile house of the zoo, then shoots to a frame of a snake
habitat. The Dursleys are looking into the habitat when Dudley orders for his father to make the
snake move. Harry says that the snake is asleep, as they leave Harry begins to talk to the snake,
and is amazed when the snake begins to respond with head movements. Harry is shoved aside

Commented [EA9]: Does this need to be italicized?

Claire Hibbert
Commented [EA10]: Who is McGonagall? I know she
only appears once in your observations, but it might be
beneficial to the readers if there was an extra bit of
information about who she is. The description you have
about the first minutes of your observations are
detailed and easy to read:)
Claire Hibbert
Commented [EA11]: Maybe in general add any
actor(s) that you use in the observations
Haley Cutrell

when Dudley sees that the snake is moving. The glass on the habitat disappears, causing Dudley
to fall into it, however as the snake is escaping the glass reappears and he becomes trapped. As
they return home Uncle Vernon demands to know what happened, Harry tells him that the glass
was there and then it wasnt, it was like magic he says. Very angrily Uncle Vernon responds
with Theres no such thing as magic!
8 minute 30 seconds: An owl drops a letter through the mail slot and Harry finding a letter
addressed to him in the stack of mail. Dudley steals it as he comes into the kitchen and gives it to
his Mum and Dad, whom at first brush it aside, however once they look at the letter Uncle
Vernon and Aunt Petunia look at each other in horror. Another set of owls are shown dropping
off multiple copies of the letter through the mail slot, which Uncle Vernon rips in half. Uncle
Vernon closes the mail slot, and on the doorstep the next morning they find several more letters.
He burns all the letters that have been delivered thus far while Harry peeks in from the Hall.
10 minutes 45 seconds: Uncle Vernon is talking about why he thinks Sunday is the finest day of
the week, while being served tea by Harry. Harry says it is because theres no post on Sundays
after Dudley is unable to guess why. As Uncle Vernon is talking about this Harry looks out the
window to see a sea of owls. The house begins to shake and letters come flying out of the
chimney. Harry tries to read one of the letters, however uncle Vernon stops him. Uncle Vernon
decides they are going to go far away where the letters will not be able to reach them.
13 minutes: Harry is laying on the floor drawing a birthday cake and waiting for the clock to hit
12 for his eleventh birthday. Someone knocks down the door to the hut in the middle of the sea,
and a monster of a man comes through the door. He introduces himself as Rubeus Hagrid, keeper
of keys and grounds at Hogwarts. Hagrid confronts the Dursleys when Vernon tries to make him
leave, bending the nose of the gun to shoot at the ceiling. Hagrid turns and says how he hasnt
seen Harry since he was a baby, however he was unaware he was talking to Dudley. Hagrid
gives Harry a birthday cake and tells him about being a wizard, which he finds very hard to
believe. Harry finds out that his aunt and uncle knew he was a wizard and didnt tell him. After
insulting Dumbledore in front of Hagrid, Hagrid gives Dudely a pigs tail because he is eating
Harrys birthday cake.
18 minutes 30 seconds: Harry and Hagrid are walking through London discussing the required
school supplies Harry will need. Hagrid leads Harry into a pub, where Hagrid is greeted by the
barmen, however once people start to notice Harry they all come to introduce themselves. Harry
is then introduced to his future teacher, Professor Quirrell, who teaches defense against the dark
arts. The professor talks with a stutter and refuses to shake Harrys hand. As they leave the pub
Hagrid tells Harry hes famous, but Harry wants to understand why he is famous and how all the
people knew who he was. Hagrid opens up to a shopping center called Diagon Ally.
22 minutes: Hagrid takes Harry to the wizarding bank called Gringotts. While there Hagrid gives
the goblins a note from Dumbledore about a cryptic item in one of the vaults. Harry opens his
vault to find a large amount of gold he had no idea he owned. After leaving his vault they reach
vault 713 where Hagrid removes a small package and puts it into his jacket.

26 minutes: Harry is trying to find the wand that is meant for him. He tries the first two and is
told they do not work. When he tries the third the whole scene lightens and the musics volume
increases. Afterword the store owner, Olivander, says curious repeatedly. He then explains how
the wand that has chosen Harry is linked to the wand of the man who gave Harrys his scar.
Hagrid is outside the window after the explanation of the wand showing Harry the snowy owl he
is holding as a birthday gift.
29 minutes: Harry wants Hagrid to tell him the story of the man who gave him his scar. Hagrid is
not very willing to tell him the story, and doesnt want to say the name. Hagrid explains the dark
times that were on the wizarding world then, about how they were living in fear of a dark wizard
named Voldemort. He also tells Harry the story of how his parents died, he had previously been
told they were killed in a car crash.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets:

Commented [EA12]: does this need to be italicized?

Claire Hibbert

0 minutes: The scene opens to several home on Private drive, with Harry sitting at the window
looking over moving pictures of his parents. Uncle Vernon yells for Harry Potter. He is upset

Dudley finds very funny. The family goes over the schedule for the evening because Vernons

says its an honor to meet him and Harry asks who he is. Dobby introduces himself, and then
begins to explain why he is there. Harry offers for him to sit down and Dobby cries because he
has never met a wizard who has offered such kindness to a house elf. Dobby says he has never
met many good wizards, then proceeds to hit himself over the head with Harrys lamp. Dobby
says he has to protect and warn Harry to not go back to Hogwarts due to a horrible plot for
terrible things that are going to happen.
5 minutes 45 seconds: Harry puts Dobby into the cabinet when Vernon comes up so that he
wont be seen. Harry wants to know how Dobby knows that his friends havent been writing
him. He finds out Dobby kept the letters so that Harry wouldnt want to go back to school.
Dobby then runs from Harry, and to make him not go to school he drops a cake onto Vernons
bosss wifes head, causing Harry to get into trouble.
8 minutes: Vernon is putting bars onto the window of Harrys room so that he cant get out. He
tells Harry hes never going to go back to school and will never see his friends again. At night
Harry looks out of his window and see what looks like a flying car. In the car is Ron and his twin
brothers Fred and George. They take the bars off of Harrys window and help him escape from
his aunt and uncle. When they get into the car Vernon grabs Harrys foot and falls out the
window, leaving the Weasleys to fly away with Harry in the car.

Commented [EA13]: Maybe to make this more

appealing to the eyes, have the "minutes" bolded. This
can makes it easier to read.
Claire Hibbert

11 minutes: The car parks on a dirt road, and they enter a house, there are dishes cleaning
themselves as well as the knitting happening by itself. A women comes in demanding to know
where they had been, she makes it clear she doesnt blame Harry and is very angry at her
children. A man walks in to the home while everyone is eating breakfast. He asks who Harry is,
and when he finds out how he arrived he asks how it went, before being scolded by his wife. He
asks Harry about the function of a rubber duck, before they are interrupted by a screeching owl.
They receive letters about their school supplies and Mrs. Weasley says they have to go to Diagon
Ally to get everything.
14 minutes 15 seconds: Harry is told to go first with the flu powder, however Harry doesnt
know what flu powder is. Ron steps into the fireplace, says Diagon Ally, and drops some black
powder and disappears in a burst of flame. Then Harry steps into the Fire place and says
Diagonally, and he comes out of a fireplace into a strange dark looking shop. There are skulls
and bodiless hands on display. Harry sees a hand so he goes to touch it and it grasps onto him.
Harry does his best to get away. Harry then leaves and walks out into the street, he is repeatedly

Ally.

22 minutes: They Weasleys and Harry are all rushing to make the train, and when they ran into
the wall at the platform it wouldnt let them through. The gateway sealed itself, and as the clock
rings they realize that they have missed the train. Harry says they should wait for his parents by
the car. Then you see Harry and Ron in the car, where Harry says that the muggles arent used to
seeing flying cars. Ron pushes a button and the car disappears. They say they have to catch up
with the train, the turn around to see the train is right behind them.
25 minutes: Harry falls out of his side of the car, and Ron tries to help him back into the car. The
night gets darker and then the car begins to shake and be out of the boys control. They drive into
a tree and Ron breaks his wand. The tree begins to shake and hit the car, and it falls out of the
tree, before driving away. The car then opens its door by itself, tossing the boys and their stuff
out of the trunk and driving off into the forest. Ron says he is going to get killed for losing the
car. Harry begins to list the things that have been happening to make him almost not make it to
Hogwarts. They are then told they are in a lot of trouble, being yelled at by Professor Snape,
talking about how they have put the wizarding world in jeopardy and that they would be expelled
if they were Slytherin.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban:

0 minutes: A window is glowing on and off in the pitch black of night, while the sound wind is
playing behind the theme song. Uncle Vernon comes through the door so Harry pretends to be
asleep. Harry is told to open the door and Vernon walks in with a fat women and a dog. Harry
asks Vernon to sign a form and he is told to ask later. The fat women is named marge, who does
not like Harry. They sit to eat and Harry is serving them. Marge lets the dog have some of his
brandy. Vernon says Harry has been sent to a school for hopeless cases and marge asks if they
beat kids with a cane and Harry is told by Vernon to say yes.
4 minutes: Marge says Harry has bad blood, and is making fun of Harrys father, however Harry
says that she is wrong, causing marge to break her glass. Marge then begins to make fun of
Harrys mother, before he tells her to shut up. She then begins to inflate, buttons begin to fly,
Vernon is bitten by the dog, and marge begins to float. She bounces off of the ceiling and flies
out of the door. Vernon tries to keep her down, but she flys away because marge doesnt want
Vernon to hurt her dog. Harry runs to his room and packs his stuff. Vernon says he need to bring
her back, and Harry leaves the Dursleys.
7 minutes: Harry is seen walking in the streets with his trunk, there is little to no light, and you
can see his breath when he breaths. He sits on the curb, the street lights begin to flicker, and the
objects in the park begin to move. Harry sees a dog across the street, when he draws his wand he
is knocked off his feet and a bus appears out of nowhere. The conductor tells Harry to get on the
bus, he looks for the grim before boarding the bus.
9 minutes 30 seconds: Harry boards the bus, then a talking head hanging from the rearview
mirror tells the driver to take it away, and warns that its going to be a bumpy ride. The bus goes
at a very fast rate, swerving in and out of traffic, Harry wonders is they are being seen by the
muggles, before coming to a halt so they dont hit a little old lady. Someone is reading a
newspaper and asks who the man on the front is. He is told its serious black who was a big
supporter of Lord Voldemort.
12 minutes: Harry is dropped off at the Leaky Cauldron, where he is met by the owner. He is
taken into a room and meets the Minister of Magic, who tells him that the incident is dealt with
about Marge. Harry is told he shouldnt have run from the Dursleys because there is a murderer

19 minutes: The children are boarding the train, and Mrs. Weasleys hands Ron his rat, and the
train starts to leave. Harry, Ron, and Hermione talk about how Harry was lucky not to be

expelled while they try to find a compartment to sit in. Harry tells the other two that he is the
target of serious black, when the train stops moving and the lights go out. Ron looks out the
window and he thinks there is someone coming aboard the train. The window freezes over, then
a figure appears at the door of the compartment. A hooded figure opens the door, and comes
after Harry. A man from the compartment stands up and a white light comes from his wand,
causing the figure to leave, while Harry passes out.
22 minutes and 30 seconds: Harry is woken up and is told to eat chocolate by the man who made

24 minutes: There are carts are moving towards Hogwarts castle. The great hall opens up to a
group of students singing and holding frogs. Dumbledore addresses the students, he introduces
the new defense against the dark arts teacher, Professor Lupin. Draco makes fun of Harry for
fainting at the Dementors. Dumbledore also introduces Hagrid as the new care of magical
creatures professor. He also talks about the fact that the Dementors will be at the school until
serious black is captured. He warns the students to be careful around the Dementors.
27 minutes: the students make their way to their dormitories, when the Gryffindors get there the
fat lady is singing and wont let them into their common rooms. In Harry and Rons room they
are eating candies that cause them to make Animal noises. The screen pans out to be the
Demontors hanging around Hogwarts castle.
Commented [EA14]: Overall, you did a good job on
having detail on your paper. If you fix the few little
quirks then I think you will be good to go! Just
remember that not everyone has seen these movies or
read these books. But overall good job!

Interview Number 1:
Vani Sangh
Tell me what you like most about Harry Potter, and why.
I like how you can just fall into the magical aspects and at the same time just love it. I like the
basis of how the story is framed. It is a magic that transforms throughout your life and the love
for Harry potter just grows every day.
Name a few things you feel could have been different throughout the movie, how and why
do you feel they should have been different?
They should have portrayed James Potter with a younger actor because he wasnt that old when
he died. It would have made the story more connected to him because he died when he was in his
late 20s. The dresses for the twins in the 4th movie for the Patil twins did not show the Indian
culture correctly. It was a horrible clash of pink and orange, and it seemed like less thought was
put into them then the other three female dates for the Ball. I wish they should have shown the
relationship between Harry and his Aunt over the death of his mother in the 6th movie.

Commented [EA15]: It is evident that you chose a

good candidate for your interview. The questions are
thought out and the answers are in detail. The interview
helps tie your assignment together. It is also a plus that
you interviewed to people to get a different perspective.
Nice work:)
Claire Hibbert

Explain how you were introduced to the Harry Potter Universe

My moms friend had given her the first two books in paper back when I was in first or second
grade. I had already seen the movie and she said I should read them. Thats how I fell in love
with the story
What are your thoughts on the controversial way Harry is treated by his Aunt and Uncle?
In realistic terms he would have been scarred for life and it would have disturbed him forever.
However he grew out of it because of his friendship with Ron and Hermione. They shouldnt
have treated him how they did just because he was different. His aunt should have overcome her
jealousy and hurt from childhood and been there for Harry. He should not have been cut off from
the world he was supposed to be born into. I feel that if they had explained what was in store for
him they would have been more open to the fact that part of their family had magical talents.
How are J. K. Rowlings characters relatable to so many different kinds of people?
Because theyre kids and teenagers too. They go through things like relationships, struggle in
classes and depression as well. They realize they have been born into a large family Ron realizes
he shouldnt be worried that he is being over shadowed. They go through the same curiosity and
emotions of everyday people. The fight of good and bad with in you. Its basically the story of an
orphan boy who is trying to find his place in the world and fighting against his inner turmoil and
the outside world with the lifelong friends he made and extended family he has created with his
those around him and show him the kind of world he was born into.
At the end of the interview she said I could go on about this forever

Interview 2:
Megan Elmore
Tell me what you like most about Harry Potter, and why.
I love how the story line was created. It was written so well and I literally love everything about
it! I love how Hogwarts is a hidden school that only those with magical powers can find. I feel
that way because imagine going to a school that only you and about 500 other people know
about and the rest of the world is oblivious.
Name a few things you feel could have been different throughout the movie, how and why
do you feel they should have been different?
I feel that nothing should have been changed. If any of it would have been changed then Harry
Potter would not be the Harry Potter we grew to love.
Explain how you were introduced to the Harry Potter Universe
When I was in middle school I always wanted to watch the Harry Potter movies when they came
on TV but my father told me they were awful movies and they should be removed from the

world. So for a while I believed him. Then one day my 9th grade self decided Im going to
watch these movies because they seem awesome and everyone Im friends with loves them.
What are your thoughts on the controversial way Harry is treated by his Aunt and Uncle?
I hate that Harry was treated the way he was by his Uncle and Aunt. Just because he is a child of
her sister gives them no reason to lock him in a closet underneath the stairs.
How are J. K. Rowlings characters relatable to so many different kinds of people?
The characters in her books are so relatable to everyday people! They look the same, act the
same (for the most part) and experience the same feelings that we as normal muggles do. Its
such a shame we cant play Quidditch though. I would love to fly around on a broom.
