Chandigarh

ROCK GARDEN
Chandigarh has the distinction of having a unique world acclaimed Rock Garden. It Consist of art
object, fashioned from industrial and urban waste. It is situated between the capital complex and
Sukhna lake in Sector1.It nestles amidst 20acres of woods in the form of an open air exhibition
hall, theatre trove and a miniature maze all rolled into one vast fantasy land of art and landscape.
It is without doubt, a tourist spot that is a must on the itinerary of visitor to Chandigarh.
An unpretentious entrance leads to a magnificent, almost, surrealist arrangement of rocks,
boulders, broken chinaware, discarded fluorescent tubes, broken and cast away glass bangles,
building waste, coal and clay-all juxtaposed to create a dream folk world of palaces, soldiers,
monkeys, village life, women and temples. The open air sculptures and concealed gateways
separating them are at places enhanced by a waterfall, pools and an open air theatre with proper
stage setting. Several prestigious performances have been staged in this small but very artistic
and naturalistic open air theatre.

ROSE GARDEN
Zakir Hussain Rose Garden Asia's largest Rose Garden and is spreaded over 30 acres of land having
over 1600 different species or roses. These have been planted beautifully carved out lawns and
flowers beds. Like the cultural zone which is just across the road in sector 10,this was also planned by
Dr. M.S. Randhawa as his interest in horticulture and fondness for flowers was profuse. Every year,
either at the end of February or beginning of March, a big festival known as Rose Festival, is
celebrated at this garden. Over 20,000 people visit this festival. Its one of the great celebrations in the
city. There are lots of competitions, cultural celebrations and many other events.

Sector 17 Plaza
One of the most important places to visit is Sector 17, Chandigarh's sleek shopping area and the city
centre. Planned around four pedestrian concourses meeting at a central chowk (intersection), the
Sector 17 of Chandigarh is a pedestrian's paradise dotted with fountains, sculptures, and groves of
trees. In summers the tourists move from one end of the sector to the other, under the shade of a
corridor, and in winter it is nice to be out in the sun-drenched piazzas. In the evenings, when the
colorful mosaic of neon signs and the aesthetically illuminated fountains come alive, Sector 17
becomes the Chandigarh city's biggest outdoor club.

Government Museum and Art Gallery (www.chdmuseum.gov.in)


The Government Museum and Art Gallery in Sector 10 of Chandigarh has a fine collection of stone
sculptures of the Gandhara period. The museum is the place to see the prehistoric fossils and

Museum of Evolution of Life


The Museum of Evolution of Life in Sector 10 of Chandigarh takes tourists on a trip 5,000 years back
from the Indus Valley Civilization to the present day. Chandigarh city's Museum of Evolution of Life is
open from 10.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and is closed on Mondays.

International Dolls Museum


The International Dolls Museum in Sector 23 of Chandigarh has an interesting collection of dolls and
puppets from all over the world covering the variant art of more than 25 countries. Chandigarh city's
International Dolls museum is closed on Sundays.

The Hidden Valley

The Hidden Valley is an Ecotourism camping adventure site in the Shivalik Foothills. It is located near
the famous Mata Jainti Devi Temple in Village Jainti Majri, Punjab. Besides being in the pristine

SHIMLA
The British empire may have ceased to exit, but its echo lingers on in Shimla (2205m). As the Summer
Capital of the British in India, Shimla was the country's focus for the better part of every year and now, is
the state capital of Himachal Pradesh. Today, it has well developed facilities, easy accessibility and
numerous attractions making it one of India's most popular hill resort. Situated in the lower ranges of the
Himalayan mountains, it is surrounded by pine deodar, oak and rhododendron forests. Towards the north
lie the snow-covered high-ranges, while the valleys breathe whispering streams and swaying fields.
Within the town are host of splendid colonial edifices, quaint cottages and charming walks. Shimla offers
a variety of shopping, sport and entertainment activities
ACCESS The airport is at Jubbar-Hatti, 23 km away. Shimla is connected to Kalka by an enenchanting
narrow gauge railway line where even a quaint rail car ply. By road, Chandigarh is 117 km, Manali is 280
km, Chail is 45 km and Delhi is at a distance of 370 km. From Delhi, Manali and Chandigarh, luxury
coaches and taxis ply to Shimla. During tourist season HPTDC also operates regular deluxe buses from
Delhi and Manali to Shimla.
CLIMATE In winter, the temperature can drop below freezing point when heavy woolens are required.
Summer temperature are mild and light woolens/cottons are recommended.

PLACES OF INTEREST
THE RIDGE: This large open space in the heart of town presents excellent views of the mountain ranges.
Shimla's landmarks - the neo- gothic structure of Christ Church and the neo - Tudor library building - are
worth seeing.
LAKKAR BAZAR: Popular for its wood crafts and Souvenirs, this is just off the Ridge.
JAKHOO HILL (2.5 km): At 2455m, this is the town's highest peak and a famous point for Shimla's
famous views. The summit is crowned with a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The hill is full of paths
and narrow roads which are enjoyable walks.
ST. MICHAEL'S CATHEDRAL: This dressed-stone church with fine stained glass has a cruciform design.
It is located just off the Mall, below the District Courts.
STATE MUSEUM (3km): This houses a representative collection of Himachal's rich heritage. Exhibits
include archaeological artifacts, carvings, paintings and sculptures. Closed on Monday and holidays.
INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDY (4 km): At 1983m, this magnificent English renaissance
structure was the former Viceregal Lodge. Its lawns and woodland are added attractions. Entry by ticket (
nominal charge ). A portion of the interior is also open to the public, except on Sundays and holidays.
THE GLEN (4 km ): At 1830m, It is a thickly wooded ravine through which a stream flows. It is a popular
picnic spot.
ANNANDALE (4.5 km): Surrounded by a thick deodar forest, this large glade has an ancient temple on
the edge.
PROSPECT HILL AND KAMNA DEVI ( 6 km): At 2125m and crowned by a temple dedicated to Kamna
Devi, the Hill offers spectacular wide views of the city and its environs.
SANKAT MOCHAN (7 km): This is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman.
TARA DEVI (11 km): 2044m, A thickly wooded hill with a temple dedicated to Tara Devi.

MASHOBRA (12 km): At 2149m, this beautiful suburb is surrounded by thick forests. From here, a track
leads down to Sipur which is an exquisite glade shaded by ancient deodar trees. There are old temples a
fair is held every April.
KUFRI (16 km): At 2501m, this is famous for its wide views and ski slopes. An enjoyable walk leads up
to the Mahasu Peak. At Kufri, Himachal Tourism runs Cafe Lalit.
FAGU (22 km): At 2510m, Fagu has some enchanting views. Himachal Tourism run Hotel Peach Blossom
offers spectacular views.
CHAIL (45 km): This was a former Summer Capital of the Patiala State. The Palace has been converted
to a Luxury Hotel by Himachal Tourism.
TATTAPANI (51 km): At 656m, there are hot sulphur springs believed to have medicinal value.

THE PETERHOF
The Peterhof housed at least seven Viceroys and Governor Generals during the Raj. The first Viceroy to
move into Peterhoff was the Earl of Elgin who arrived in Shimla on 4th April 1863. After independence the
building served as Punjab High Court and it was here that the trial of Nathu Ram Godsey, who
assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, took place in 1948-49. When Himachal became full fledged state the
building became the Raj Bhawan, Unfortunately it burnt down in 1981 but it was restructured in 1991
and designed to match the hill architecture palatial pattern and now is a heritage luxury hotel.
The historical Peterhof complex is located in the heart of city 'Chaura Maidan' offering panoramic view of
Choorchandani on the front side, Dhauladhar ranges on western side and Kinner Kailash on the eastern

FAGU
Fagu is a tiny village aside a saddle-like mountain along Hindustan Tibet Road. A rare range of views is
visible from here, which include vivid dales and snow clad peaks. The picturesque countryside is dotted
with clusters of villages, fruit gardens and nearby terraced fields. Fog characterizes the hillside landscape
endowed with romantic ambience. Most of the area is covered with conifers of Himalayan cedar and
spruce. Located at an altitude of 2,450 m, Fagu, perhaps have derived its name from the fog itself.
ACCESS : The closest airport is at Jubbar-Hatti, 45 km away. The nearest narrow gauge railhead is at
Shimla, 22 km away. By road Chandigarh is 139 km and Delhi is at a distance of 392 km.

PLACES OF INTEREST

KUFRI (4 km): (2510 m) Famous for its ski slopes also have enjoyable walks leading up to Mahasu Peak
in proxomity. A Nature Park and Mini Zoo are other places worth visiting. Hill ponies and Yaks are
available for a joy ride. HiPTDC here runs Cafe Lalit.
SHIMLA (22 km): (2205 m) Once a summer seat of Britesher, Shimla is now the state capital of
Himachal Pradesh. It has the rarest of the rare heritage buildings and monuments of the bygone area.
Worth seeing places are - The legendary Mall Road, The Ridge, The Christ Church, Kali Bari Temple, Jakhu
Hanuman Temple, Sankat Mochan, State Museum, Institute of Advanced Studies.
CHAIL (27 km): (2226 m) provides many bounties of nature. Once the summer capital of Maharaja of
Patiala, the Kingly Palace decorated with some historical objects as well, is now owned as a Heritage
building by HPTDC. Also famous for the world's highest Cricket Ground, Wildlife Sactuary and Sidh Baba
ka Mandir.
NARKANDA (42 km): (2708 m) On the Hindustan Tibet road, Narkanda offers a spectacular view of
higher snow ranges. An uphill trek (8 km) through deodar woods leads beholder to Hatu Peak famous for
ancient Hatu Mata Temple (3475 m) which is now connected with a motorable road. During winter, under
the aegis of HPTDC, skiing is also conducted here. Kotgarh and Thanedhar, Himachal's Apple heartland
famous for delicious apples are located in vicinity. HPTDC runs Hotel Hatu at Narkanda.

NALDEHRA

Located at distance of 22 km from Shimla, Naldehra (2044 m) is a heaven for tourists. It boasts of the
oldest 9 hole golf course in the country. The well groomed Golf Course is a lovely verdant, perhaps one of
the finest and sporty in India. Crowned with a springing turf the Golf Course was suggested by Lord
Curzon. He was so enchanted by the place that he gave his daughter Alexendra, "Naldehra" as her
second name. It is the venue of many competitions. The Nag temple is also situated here and Naldehra
derives its name from it.

CHINDI
Hillsides covered with thick forests, acres filled with apple orchards, small picturesque hamlets and

Chandigarh is 204 km and Delhi is 457 km. The road from Shimla passes through Naldehra, Tattapani, Al
Chindi and Churag.

The wide Karsog Valley lies below Chindi and has good excursion spots. Apple orchards add thir
attraction to the area and Chindi is surrounded by them.
The area has several temples that display a high level of traditional craftmanship. Some of the
important temples are - Mamleshwara Mahadev, Kamakshya Mata, Mahunag, Ardhnarishwara, Aledi
Mahadev, Palinag at Nalagali, the sacred Bhima Rock, Churag temple, Nag Dhamooni at Sairi Bangla,
temple at Chatri and the temple of Nag Dhamooni at Saranda.
The hike to Shikari Devi (3359 m) is possible from Chindi. The views from Kunhoo Dhar (23 Km) are
spectacular.

THE MAMLESHWAR
The recently built Hotel Mamleshwar has superb views and is perfectly sited for exploring the area. The
hotel has an excellent location near woods and orchards and is ideal for leisure and offbeat sightseeing.
The hotel is a good stopover towards Kullu-Manali or towards Kinnaur via Baina Khud from Shimla on this

PLACES OF INTEREST
DARLAGHAT (1800 m): Just 2 km far from the hotel, the place is famous for pollution free Gujrat
Ambuja Cement Factory.
DURGAGHAT (1790 m): On Shimla - Manali State highway. Famous for Durga Temple on the top of the
hill.
ARKI (17 km): Once the capital of the princely State of Baghal, Arki witnessed a good measure of
turbulence in this area. Arki became the stronghold of an encoding force of Gurkhas, furring the Gorkha
wars that came to an end in 1815-16. About 1850, Raja Kishan Chand had the fort decorated with fine
murals executed in the Pahari style. Here is a place with history and adorned with fine art. A temple of
Lutroo Mahadev dedicated to Lord Shiva is also worth seeing (7 km on foot).
HARSINGH TIBBA: This peak is situated about 20 km, north east, at an altitude of 2445m. One can
travel by taxi or buses upto village Chanawog (1834m) and a further 4 km climb upto the peak. On the
top is an ancient temple of Dev Harsingh. The peak also offers spectacular wide view of Satluj valley and
the river including Shimla Hills.

BARIDHAR (22 km): At an altitude of 2140m this is a beautiful place for trekking and sight seeing.
Annual fair called "Bari Jatra" is celebrated on 14th June every year. This day, palanquins of five
Pandavas from nearby village being worshipped as local Gods, assemble and meet on the hill. There are
also two temples dedicated to Pandavas and Budhi Mata.
SHOPPING: There is an enormous range of goods that Shimla offers. This includes handicrafts, wood
and metalwork, shawls, pullovers, local tweeds, caps, Tibetan carpets, pickles, jams and squashes.
Himachal Pradesh Govt. operates an Emporium at The Mall, Shimla where all these products are
available for sale.

Darjeeling
Chowrasta & Mall
Chowrasta, a wide promenade atop a ridge lined with shops and restaurants is taken to be the
heart of the town. Here people gather to chat, spend time basking in the sun or just to snatch a
moment of peace. The Brabourne Park is attached to the Chowrasta and now features a musical
fountain. This place is an open space and free from vehicular movements from where one can
enjoy the scenic beauty of the mountain range and take a charming stroll at the Darjeeling Mall.
Chowrasta is the central place of the Mall Road.

Tiger Hill

Situated at an altitude of 2590 metres (8482 ft.) and


13 kms from the town, this spot has earned international fame for the magnificent view of the
sunrise over "Kanchenjunga" and the great Eastern Himalayan Mountains. Even Mount Everest, the
world's highest peak, is also visible from here.

Batasia Loop

About 5 kms from Darjeeling, this Railway Loop is a


marvellous feat of engineering. It is fascinating to watch the toy train wind its way round the loop.
The War Memorial constructed in the memory of brave sons of Darjeeling who died in different
wars since 1947, is worth a visit. A glorious view of snowy peak and town can be seen from this
place. Timings: sunrise till two hours after sunset.

Shanti Stupa

The Shanti Stupa was established by Nipponzan


Myohoji, a Japanese Buddhist order. Situated on the slopes of the Jalapahar Hill the pagoda can be
reached by foot or on taxi. The pagoda is the highest free structure in the town. It also showcases
the four avatars of the Buddha.

Observatory Hill
Apart from the magnificent view it commands, great religious importance is attached to the
Observatory Hill by both Hindus and Buddhists who worship here by the hundreds.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute


The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute was set up following the successful ascent of the Mount
Everest-the highest peak in the world by the local hero Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edumund
Hillary on 28 May 1953. The oldest mountaineering institute in the country carries out various
mountaineering courses every year. Apart from Tenzing, legendary mountaineers like Nawang
Gombu(the first man to climb Everest twice) and Lattoo Dorjee Sherpa have helped build the
reputation of this pioneering institute. The institute is presently under the purview of the Ministry
of Defence, Government of India and its museum is worth a visit.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park

Adjacent to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute,


it is a high altitude wildlife park and new home for Siberian Tiger, Himalayan Black Bear, Deer, Red
Panda, Snow Leopard and Birds. The Snow Leopard breeding centre was started in 1986 to breed
Snow Leopards in captivity with the help of International Snow Leopard captive breeding project.

Raj Bhawan

Raj Bhawan is the summer residence of the Governor of West Bengal. The fantastically developed
mansion with perfectly manicured lawns, lush gardens, surrounding forests and British Bungalows
overlooks the Darjeeling Lebong spur and commands a magnificent close-up view of the snow
capped Kanchanjunga Range. Being a high security zone, visitors are no longer allowed to venture
inside its precinct. A walk around it through the dense forest is however, most charming. Visitors
can experience the entire Sikkim-Jorethang crest unhindered.

Darjeeling- Rangit Valley Passenger Cable Car


Darjeeling-Rangit Valley Passenger Cable Car is popularly known as the Ropeway. It is about 3 km
north of the town and situated at what is known as the North Point. The Ropeway is India's oldest
passenger ropeway and connects Darjeeling with Singla Bazaar at the bottom of the valley. The
present ropeway has been extensively modernized and visitors can now safely travel over the
clouds to witness the aerial view of the lush green tea gardens below.

Tenzing Rock and Gombu Rock


Situated at Lebong Cart Road, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute conducts preliminary course on
Rock Climbing.

Natural History Museum


Within walking distance from Chowrasta, this interesting museum which contains a comprehensive
collection of fauna of the region. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The oldest Botanical Garden in Darjeeling named as Lloyd Botanical Garden. It has a varieties of
flora and is famous for two living fossils. It is located just below the Eden Sanatorium(Saheed
Durga Mall District Hospital) on an open slope covering an area of about 40 acres. Lloyd Botanical
Garden is open seven days a week. There are no entrance fees. A camera, a small note book for a
botany enthusiast and a couple of hours to spare, is a must. Timing: 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Shrubbery
It is about 2-5 kms from Darjeeling Railway Station and walkable from the Chowrasta. It is a
beautiful park with a package of cultural programmes performed daily during the tourist season
and its opening time is 4.00 p.m. and closing time is 8.00 p.m. The park has recently been
extensively re-developed, and now comprises of a giant Statue of Lord Shiva, a temple and
provisions for live-interactive entertainment. The best time to visit the park is during evenings.
Entrance fee is charged and nominal charges for photography may also be required to be made by
the visitor.

Step Aside
About 3 mins walk from Chowrasta will bring the visitors to the place where the famous Indian
patriot Deshbandu Chittaranjan Das had passed away in 1925.

Ava Art Gallery

About 2 km from town on the way to Ghoom. It houses fine art and embroidery work of Mrs. Ava
Devi. Timing: 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Ghoom Monastery
Also called Sakya Monastery, this monastery in Ghoom is located 8 km from Darjeeling. Sakya
monastery is a historic and significant monastery of the Shakya Order. The original monastery was
built during the early twentieth century.
The monastery can accommodate around sixty monks. The statue of Maithreya Buddha which is
4.57 meter high, of this monastery is of interest here. The monastery also preserves some of the
rarest Buddhist manuscripts.

Happy Valley Tea Estate


Of about seventy tea gardens in this hilly region, this is one of the nearest, about 3 km from the
town. Here one can see the processing of the world famous Darjeeling tea. Timing: 8 a.m. to 12
noon and 1 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. Closed on Sundays (afternoon) and Mondays (full day).

Lebong Race Course


About 8 km from the town, it is the smallest race course in the world. The complete lap is only 480
yds. Long. It was laid out in 1885 as a parade ground.

Garg World Amusement Park


Situated at a distance of about 4 km. On Gandhi Road it is a new amusement park with a variety
of attractions.

Rock Garden & Ganga Maya Park

Situated 10 km from town, Rock Garden and Ganga


Maya Park has now developed into a very attractive picnic spot with natural water falls. The park
offers boating facilities and is endowed with great scenic beauty. Ample eateries are available for
visitors to indulge in local delicacies and one can even buy souvenirs. No fees are charged for
taking photographs. Visitors are however, required to make arrangements for transportation. A two
way travel arrangement is advisable.

Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre


Tibetan refugee self help centre was established on 1st October 1959 to rehabilitate displaced
Tibetians who had followed His Holiness, The Dalai Lama to India in early 1959. This centre

produces excellent carpets, woollen goods, wood work, leather work etc. The Tibetan craftsmen
can be seen at work at the centre. It is closed on Sundays.

Hayden Hall
Woollen carpets, cotton shoulder bags, table mats, hand knitted pure woollen sweaters and caps
are available for sale at reasonable prices. The items are woven by the local ladies.

Excursions, Picnic Spots & Short- treks, Senchal Lake


A favourite picnic spot about 10 km. from the town. Senchal Lake provides water supply to
Darjeeling town.

Singla
Altitude 244 metres or 800 ft. (approx.). This attractive picnic spot near Rangeet River has been
earmarked by the Department of Tourism, DGHC for a water sports complex.

Ajitar
21 km. from Darjeeling by road (jeep able), it is a magnificent picnic spot.

Bijanbari
38 km. from Darjeeling by road (motor able). Situated at an altitude of 762 metres or 2500 ft.
This beautiful picnic spot is near the Little Rangeet river.

Kurseong

It is the peace, serenity and the healthy climate that attracted


many a great person to this place. Some of the famous poems and songs of Guru Rabindranath
Tagore were composed in Kurseong. The magic painter Abanindranath Tagore and great composer
Atul Prasad Sen got inspiration for some of their famous works around Kurseong. Sister Nivedita,
the great disciple of Swami Vivekananda made Kurseong her home. It is learnt that Mark Twain
spent some time in Kurseong in 1885, Fazlul Haque the Prime Minister of undivided Bengal also
stayed here. Netaji Subhash Bose was interned by the colonial government for a couple of months

Kalimpong

67 Km from Siliguri, this beautiful hill town in North


Bengal which can be reached from either Siliguri or Darjeeling. KALIMPONG means king's
minister's strong hold a Bhutanese word. It is also called Kalimpong in local dialect meaning
"black spur". As per the Lepchas, Kalimpong means ridge where we play'. It is said that these
local tribesmen used to organise field sports while not engaged in agricultural pursuit hence the

Pedong
Pedong is a picturesque hamlet surrounded by pine forests. It is situated 20 km from Kalimpong in
West Bengal. Pedong commands magnificent views of the snow ranges of Mount Kanchenjunga. It
falls on the ancient Silk Route that connected Tibet with India through the Jelep La Pass. Several
short and thrilling treks originate from Pedong leading to the Damsangdugi Fort, a historically
important site that witnessed a long ethnic war between the Lepchas and Bhutias. A 300 years old
ruin hidden by dense forest at Damsangudi still holds memories of the reigns of the Lepcha
kindom.

Mirik

Mirik is a nest in the hills. This is one of West Bengal's popular


hill resort at an altitude of 1767 meters with its own special charms-49 km from Darjeeling and 52
km from Siliguri. TREKKING: Trekking from Mirik to Sandakphu, Phalut has become very popular.

Sandakphu

Sandakphu, situated at a height of 3636 m above sea level, might not be famous for any tourist
destinations, but is a true paradise for all adventure lovers. Trek to the highest point on this hill
station and you will get the never seen before views of the Himalayan Range. A long stretch of
Himalayas starting from Bhutan till Mt. Everest is visible. River Teesta flows through Sandakphu at
quite a pace. The thundering River Teesta also offers a great option for adventure sports
especially river rafting. Sandakphu is the only place in the world where you will find a
Rhododendron and Silver fir forests. To reach Sandakphu, one has to nearly trek for 12 hrs from

Jorpokhri
On the way from Mirik to Darjeeling lies a town of untouched natural beauty called Jorpokhri. It is
situated only 16 kms from Darjeeling and 85Kms from Siliguri. The presence of a couple of lakes in
this area gave rise to the name of this place Jorpokhri(JOR means twin, POKHRI means lake). The
lakes are the main attraction in this place.In and around the lake one can notice the Himalayan
Salamander, a highly endanagered species of the reptile family.

Lava

32 km from Kalimpong and situated at an altitude of 7200 ft. commands panoramic view of Jelep
La and Rechi La passes. Short drives through dense forests from Kalimpong are tourist spots with

Lolaygaon

Rishyap
The place can be approached by a four-kilometer walk uphill from Lava (32 km from Kalimpong)

Kanchenjunga, the blue mountains of Sikkim, Nathu-La and Jelap-La passes are an experience of

Lepchajagat

15km form Darjeeling and 77 Km from Siliguri, Lepchajagat,


bascially a Lepcha Village, is situated at Sukhipokhri near Darjeeling on the Ghoom-Mirik road.

Toy Train (DHR)

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), popularly


known as the 'Toy Train' is one of the main attractions of the region. The track on which the train
runs is only 600 millimeters wide. The size of the train is commensurate giving it the name 'Toy
Train'. Narrow Gauge trains are used in parts of India to travel to hill stations. The most
magnificent train journeys through the narrow gauge are the gorgeous terrain. UNESCO has
declared the DHR as a World Heritage Site.

Trekking

Trekking in the Darjeeling Hills began almost a


century ago. In fact, the first organised trekking route in India was setup here along the Singalila
range. The trek begins in Darjeeling and proceeds through Maneybhanjyang, Tonglu, Sandakphu
and ends in Phalut.
There are trekker huts under the management of Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council Tourism

Tapkeshwar Temple

It is one of the oldest temples in Dehradun, dedicated to lord Shiva,


it is at the distance of 5.5 km from city bus-stand and well connected by road. A fair is organized every
year on the occasion of Shivratri. As the name suggests, temple is named Tapkeshwar as water
droplets from rocks falls on shivling and gives it marvelous look.
Laxman Siddha Temple
It is just 12 km from Dehradun. According to Hindu mythology, it is the place where after killing the
Ravana, lord Rama's younger brother Laxmana has undergone penance..

Darbar Shri Guru Ram Rai


This place has historical significance from the time of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The Sikh guru
Ram Rai ji, the eldest son of the Seventh Sikh Guru Har Rai Ji, stayed here in 1676 and now it has
changed into pilgrimage place for Sikhs.

Mussoorie
Gun Hill
Gun Hill is the second highest peak of Mussoorie. The Mall is the starting point for the cable car
towards the summit of Gun Hill. The thrill of the ride is memorable and offers beautiful views of the
Himalayan Ranges.
The Mall
The Mall is the main shopping area in Mussoorie. The Mall Road connects the two bazaars, Kulri and
Library. It is the heart of the town. Alongside the Mall is the tourist office, rows of Tibetan trinket and

sweater vendors and shops selling walking sticks and cane items. Cycle rickshaws can be seen here,
plying down the Mall. The Mall is the starting point for the cable car towards the summit of Gun Hill,
2142 m above sea level. On clear days, the peaks of Kedarnath, Badrinath and Nanda Devi can be
seen from this hill clearly.

Mussoorie Lake
The artificial Mussoorie Lake is situated about 6 km short of Mussoorie on the way from Dehradun.
The Mussoorie Lake is a delightful spot where paddle-boats are available. It commands an
enchanting view of Doon valley and nearby villages.
Landour
Landour is situated at the east end of town, situated at an altitude of 2270 m above sea level. Landour
is an Indian style bazaar. Woodstock School, an international school which has a sister school in
Kodaikkanal in South India, is also located here. The Convent Hill and Happy Valley are also situated
here where the Tibetan refugees have settled.
Camel's Back Road
Camel's Back Road is suitable for horse riding, walking and beautiful sunset views of the Himalayas.
A superb rock formation, with a life-like resemblance to a sitting camel can be seen from this spot.

Lal Tibba
Lal Tibba is the highest hill and situated at an altitude of 2438m above sea level. The view to the north
and the snow-capped peaks is stunning and best at sunrise.
Sir George Everest House
The George Everest House is the estate of Sir George, the surveyor General of India. Sir George had
his office and residence here. The Mount Everest, the highest peak of the Himalayas was named after
Sir George.
Jwalaji Temple

The Jwalaji Temple is situated on the top of the Benog Hill and has an idol of Mata Durga. The temple
is surrounded by the thick forests and offers a panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks, Doon valley
and Yamuna valley.

Tibetan Temple
This temple is located in Happy valley area of Mussoorie. Both Municipal gardens and Tibetan temple
can be seen in one day. They are located one kilometer from Lal Bahadur Shastri National
Administrative Academy. The Tibetan temple is evidence to rich Tibetan cultural heritage.
Cloud's End
A British major had a building constructed in 1838. This beautiful building was converted into hotel
and was named Cloud's End. It got the name because it appears that the clouds have ended here.
From this place one can have a good view of the valley. Cloud's End is located some eight kilometers
west of Mussoorie hills. Due to its location, at the end of horizon, it is very popular among the
Honeymooners and Foreign tourists.

Municipal Gardens Or Company Bagh


The Municipal Gardens or the Company Bagh was previously (before independence) known as
Botanical gardens of Mussoorie. Famous geologist, Dr. H. Fackner laid foundations of these gardens
in the last century.
Lake Mist
This place is 7 km on way to Kempty Falls. Lake Mist offers a perfect resting place for tired and weary
tourists. One has to pay Rs. 25 to enter Lake Mist. There is provision for accommodation as well.
Nag Devta Temple
It is an ancient temple situated on cart Mackenzie Road, about 6 km from Mussoorie. Vehicles can go
right up to the spot. It provides a charming view of Doon Valley as well as of Mussoorie.

Kempty Falls
Kempty Falls is located about 15 km away on the Yamunotri road. It is a popular and picturesque
waterfall, located in the beautiful valley surrounded by the high mountains. The bath at the foot of the
falls is refreshing. From Kempty Falls, the area west to the Yamuna gorge is being declared as a
sanctuary. This sanctuary is rich in bird life, and also has some wildlife including leopards.
Surkhanda Devi Temple
Surkhanda Devi Temple is the highest point in the area, located at a height of 3021 mt on the top of
hill. It is situated about 35 km from Mussoorie and 11 km from Dhanaulti. It is an important pilgrimage
centre. The temple offers extensive view of the snow ranges and exclusive experience one can never
forget.
Mossey Falls
It is 7km from Mussoorie via. Balahisar or Barlowganj. It is a beautiful fall surrounded by a dense
forest.
Jharipani Fall
It is 8.5 km from Mussoorie. Visitors can go by car upto Jharipani (7 km.), from where the distance to
the fall is 1.5 km. by foot.

Bhatta Fall
Bhatta Fall is beautiful & natural fall amidst most serene environment, 8 km. from Mussoorie on
Mussoorie-Dehradun road. A fall has different ponds for bathing and amusement, making it an ideal
place for picnic - a picnic spot with a difference. Accessible by car or taxi up to the fall itself.
Lakha Mandal
Lakha Mandal is on the Yamunotri road, past Kempty Falls. There are hundreds of idols of
archaeological importance that have been preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India. According
to the legend, the Kauravas made a shellac house and conspired to burn the Pandavas alive here.

Dhanaulti
If you walk past the clock tower and look between the plains and the rising slopes of Landour, you'll
see a road that leads to the green meadows and deodar forests of Dhanaulti, 24 km away. There's
both a forest bungalow and a tourist bungalow at Dhanaulti and it's a delightful place to spend a quiet
weekend.
