Introduction
SHADACresearchershavedevelopedanenhancedtimeseriestoenableaharmonizedviewofhealth
insurancecoverageovertimeusingtheCurrentPopulationSurveyAnnualSocialandEconomic
Supplement(CPS).TheestimatesreleasedbytheCensusBureaudonotaccountforsome
methodologicalchangesthatresultinknownconsistencyproblems.ResearchconductedbySHADAC
since2000hasproventhattheseandotherproblemsimpacthealthinsurancecoverageestimates.As
such,theenhancedestimatesareusefulforpolicyanalysis.

Theenhancedmicrodatavariablesareasetofeightvariablesandaweightingvariable.
Theeightvariablesaresummaryrollupsofthemajortypesofinsurancecoverage(Summary
HealthInsuranceVariables).
Theenhancedweightingvariableisalsoneededtocreateaconsistenttimeseries(Summary
HealthInsuranceWeight).
Toproducetheenhancedestimates,usethesummaryhealthinsurancevariables,plusanyother
variablesyouwant,andweighttheestimatesusingtheenhancedweight.
AllvariablesareavailablefordownloadfromtheIPUMSwebsite,aresourceofintegratedpublicuse
datamaintainedbytheMinnesotaPopulationCenter.Theseinstructionswillhelpyougetstarted.

NotethattheIPUMSsamplefor2001doesnotincludeanoversampleconductedfortheASEC
