ANSWERS TO THE GIVEN QUESTIONS

(4,5,7,8)
4. Determine the longest day of the year according to your model. What is the day
length of the longest day of the year? Determine the shortest day of the year
according to your model. What is the day length on the shortest day of the year?
ANSWER: The longest day of the year of our model is December 16th with a day
length of 15.40 hours. On the other hand, the shortest day of the year is June 16th
which has the day length of 8.6 hours. In addition, the former is also called
December solstice or Summer solstice while the latter is also called June solstice or
Winter solstice.
5. On which days is the day length exactly 12 hours according to your model?
ANSWER: Our model has no specific day length that has exactly 12 hours. The
ones nearest to 12 hours are on September 16th, which has 11.70 hours; and March
16th, which has 12.38 hours.
6. Look up the day on which the Vernal Equinox and Autumnal Equinox occur. How
do they match up with the results obtained on part 5?
ANSWER: Vernal Equinox and Autumnal Equinox both acquires equal day and
night. Meaning, the day length should only be 12. In our model, we have do not
have a day that has exactly 12 hours so, the equinoxes have nothing to match with.
7. Do you think your model accurately describes the relation between the day of the
year and length of day?
ANSWER: Yes we do. We did the process correctly and applied the data that we
received from the source to create the scatter diagram. Like a Cartesian plane, the
points are plotted according to the x-axis, which is the day of the year; and the yaxis, which is the length of day. We are also confident that it is accurate because the
diagram displayed a consistent graph.
8. Use your model to predict the hours of daylight for the latitude you selected for
various days of the year. Go to the Old Farmer's Almanac or other websites (such
as
http://astro.unl.edu/classaction/animations/coordsmotion/daylighthoursexplorer.htm
l) to determine the hours of daylight for the latitude you selected. How do the two
compare?
ANSWER: They are almost exactly the same except the values there are already
rounded off. The graph that is shown on the link given above starts at the minimum
value while the graph we have created in Microsoft Excel starts at the maximum
value. Data wise, they're basically the same.

REAL-LIFE APPLICATIONS OF TRIGONOMETRY

Signal Transmission
Equipment used in signal transmission display the graphs of the wavelength of the
signals being transmitted. From these graphs, they determine the statuses of the
signals that are being transmitted by the antenna or the tower, and be able to adjust
the configurations of the transmission to suit the problems being presented to them.
Examples of these signals are television signals and radio waves.

Engineering
Trigonometry plays a big role on engineering. The usage of sine, cosine and tangent
functions are one of these examples and it is frequently used in civil engineering.
Electrical engineering use graphs to determine the properties of the electricity that
they are examining.

Navigation and Astronomy

Astronomy use trigonometric functions to get information about the heavenly bodies
that they observe. This information may contain the distance, orbit, etc.
Navigation devices such as Global Position Systems (GPS) use triangulation through
satellites to determine the position of the person who possesses the device.
