The 98th Annual
Commencement
will be held
Friday June 5, 2015
at 7:30 p.m.
in the Big Lake
High School Gymnasium
There is no need for allocation of tickets for the

commencement ceremony. In the past, there has been
ample seating for the families of our graduates.
Immediate family, grandparents, or those needing
seating/wheelchair accommodations will be given access to
the main floor. All others should be seated in the bleachers
and/or west end of the gymnasium.
The doors will not open until 6:30 pm. We welcome you
to attend this semi-formal affair as we wish our seniors
well and congratulate their success.

BLHS celebrates best in the arts

BLHS Fine Arts banquet was held
Wednesday evening. Students who particpated in fine arts were commended.
First up were the actors from the oneact play, announced by faculty advisor
Ryan Purdy.
They are Shiloh Zoccoli, Baylee
Jacobs, Laicole Dobie, Emily Hanson,
Autumn Clyde, Justina Zou, Jamie
Schwartz, Rick Holbrook, Karissa
Bechtold, Alexander Hugh Prom,
Hannah Schoening, Heather Yanta,
Emma Thompson, Jessica Stenberg,
Kaylee Wagner, Aliyah Agyekum,
Savannah Mitchell, John Freund, Zarae
Jackson, and Aaron Matushenko.
Poetry Out Loud winners recognised
by Mrs. Hanson are Karrissa Bechtold,
who took first place, Jessica Stenberg,
second place. Laurel Pietrzak, third
place. Honorable mentions went to
Alexander Prom, Hannah Schoening,
Aliyah Agykum and Shiloh Zoccoli.
Art, yearbook, choir and band students were also recognized.
Tenor Alex Holl, who has sometimes
been the lone male voice of the Big Lake
Chamber Singers, had an opportunity to
sing at Carnegie Hall this year, an experience he wont forget.
The top choral student of the year

award went to Crystal Nordquist, who
not only sang in the choir, she accompanied them on piano from time to time
too.
Top band student awards went to Jack
Fiskum and Rachel Olson. Rachel had
perfect attendance in band for all four
years. Jack is a multi-talented musician
who played bassoon with the band. Both
are four year band letter-winners.
The Fine Arts student of the year
award went to Aliyah Agykum, who particpated in choir, yearbook, the Chamber
Singers, Cinderella, the one-act play
Superheroes and Poetry Out Loud.
Aliyahs award was presented by
Grand Knight Dennis Nagorski of the
Becker-Big Lake area Knights of
Columbus. The Knights of Columbus
also sponsor the fine arts banquet.

The Class of 2015 graduating
from Big Lake High School June 5
leave some very big shoes to fill.
The seniors have been leaders
throughout the school and have
been among the first in many areas.
Jacob Block and Peter Wallace
led the Big Lake Knowledge Bowl
team to state and for the very first
time. The team came home with
sixth place medals.
Senior Cacia Sanford played the
title role in the musical Cinderella,
the first time such a production has
been put on in Big lake for may
years.
Sanford and her amazing soprano led the cast through an amazing
production, with plenty of help
from leading man Alex Prom and
fellow seniors Autumn Clyde,
Aliyah Agyekum and Michalea
Trutna, who played the wicked
stepmother and her ugly sisters.
One thing Principal Bob
Dockendorf will remember about
the Class of 2015 is how many
good things he hears about them
when he is out and about in the
community.
I have spent seven years behind
the principals desk now, he said.
And I am overwhelmed by the
good things I hear about them
every day.
And they have done good things.
Teacher Susan Sass, who oversees the National Honor Society,
noted the students have raked
leaves and shoveled snow.
They went trick or treating for
the Big Lake Food Shelf and raised
over 1,700 pounds of food. They
have also volunteered hours of
their time working at the food
shelf.
The students have helped tutor
younger students at the middle
school and the high school in math
and English.
They raised over $3,000 with
their all-night Dance-a-thon for the
Minnesoata Brain Injury Alliance
and educated others on the dangers
of concussion.
Students have also achieved in

The top 10 percent of graduates in Big
Lake High Schools Class of 2015 are a
diverse group, but they do have some
things in common as they step out into the
world, ready for the next adventure life
sends their way.
Most of them have been students in the
Big Lake School District all their lives and
have deep roots within the Big Lake community.
d All of them plan to continue their educa.tion at colleges and universities around the
-state or in the Upper Midwest.
They all participate in extra-curricular
activities, band, choir, sports, NHS, oneact play, Poetry Out Loud or Knowledge
Bowl. Many of them excel or are leaders in
these groups or activities.
The one thing they all say they will miss
is seeing their friends and spending time
with them every day as their roads to the
future follow many different paths.
Jackie Bell, who has been
president and vice president
of NHS, in student council
for four years and running
track for three years, has
plans to study marketing at
University of Minnesota
Morris in the fall.
Her favorite memory is of the black light
dance at homecoming. Her favorite class
was drawing with Mrs. Nygaard.
She helped me a lot with my techniques
and let me express myself through my art,
Bell said.
Jacob Block, who has
been a Big Lake student all
his life, recommends extracurricular activities as the
way to have fun and make
some happy memories. He
has been involved in cross
country, track, Knowledge Bowl, student
council and NHS.
His fondest high school memory was
burning the ceiling in college chemistry
with Troy Berg and Zach Muller and
physics class with Mr. Kilpella. He plans
mto attend North Dakota State University in
September.
. Ben Book is another lifellong Big Lake student, who
was involved in NHS and
played football, basketball
and baseball. He remembers
bonfires with his friends and chemistry

class with Kim Bowen. Ben also plans to
attend NDSU and hopes to become an
engineer.
Mom is always right, says Ben.
Dont take life too seriously but still have
goals.
James Erler has participated in choir,
Knowledge Bowl and Boy Scouts.
Following graduation, he plans to train to
become a combat medic with the National
Guard and eventually he would like to be a
surgeon. His favorite teacher was Mrs.
Bristow because she didnt stand for nonsense in her class.
Jack Fiskum has been
involved in band, cross
country, track, Knowledge
Bowl and NHS during the
12 years he has spend as a
Big Lake student. Jack plans
to attend Concordia College,
Moorhead, studying cryptology and playing bassoon.
Study hard. Get your work done and
enjoy your friends, Jack says.
Samantha Harbeck is
another lifelong Big Lake
student who has been
involved in soccer, NHS and
prom committee. She plans
to
attend
Gustavus
Adolphus College and looks
forward to travelling and being married
some day.
Mr. Purdy was the best, Samantha
said. He was hilarious and fun, but still
taught me valuable things.
Arrica Imm joined
BLHS two years ago and
got involved right away in
cross country, NHS, YDYS
and Poetry Out Loud. She
plans to study engineering
at
St.
Cloud
State
University and hopes to become an environmental engineer.
Be determined in your work, Arrica
advises. Dont get on the senior slide, or
any slide.
Laura Kisners plans for
the future are undecided
beyond going to Concordia
College in Moorhead in the
fall. Involved in cross country, track, student council
and NHS, her favorite
memory is singing in the back of the bus
with her friends on the way home from

cross country meets.
Ill miss my team mates that turned into
my family, she said.
She will also miss Mr. Froiland.
Shelby Kline has plans to
attend Concordia College in
Moorhead to major in biology with a minor in neuroscience. Her favorite class
was college chemistry and
her favorite memories are of
her friends and the cross country team.
Shelby was also active in track, NHS and
student council.
Remember, you need to work hard but
having fun is important, she says.
Hannah Marx is also a
member of NHS and student
council and plans to attend
the U. of M. to study biochemistry. One day she
hopes to work in a hospital
with children.
Among her favorite Big Lake memories
are Mr. Kilpella playing the ukulele and
singing Send Me On My Way in physics
class and Mrs. Welle, because she dances
like no one else can.
Another student with
plans to work in the medical
field is Courtney Nelson,
who has been involved in
NHS, basketball and track.
Her plan is to attend the
College of St. Benedict and
major in biology. Her favorite class was
human anatomy with Mr. Froiland, dissecting cows eyes, sheep hearts and sheep
brains. One of her best memories is performing Were All In This Together with
her friends in front of the whole student
body.
Tara Peterson was on the
prom committee and plans
to attend St. Cloud
Technical and Community
College to become a dental
hygienist. Her favorite
memory is sneaking fish
into Mr. Froiland and Mr. Thieles giant
fish tank and singing harmonies with her
friends in chemistry lab.
Michaela
Trutna
enjoyed playing soccer and
was a member of NHS and
Friends of Rachel. She plans
to attend the University of
Wisconsin-Stout and major in vocational

rehabilitation. She also yearns to travel.
Her favorite class was English with Mr.
Purdy because of the interesting conversations.
Peter Wallace has been a
participant in Hornet broadcasting, Knowledge Bowl
and NHS. He plans to attend
the University of St.
Thomas for biochemistry
and pre-medicine. He also
hopes to become a surgeon one day and
would like to join the US. Air Force. His
favorite high school memory is going to
state with the Knowledge Bowl team and
taking sixth place. His favorite teacher is
Gwen Toppe.
She has been an incredible friend, supporter and teacher to me, he said. She
has greatly helped me succeed in high
school and taught me many valuable lessons.
Kalley Gunderson would
also like to be a doctor and
plans to study biomedical
science at St. Cloud State
University. She was part of
the gifted and talented program, played basketball in
middle school and participated in cross
country, track and band. Band with Mr.
Fillafer is her favorite class.
Erica Olson plans to attend the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to
study film. Ericas favorite memories
include the Dance-a-thon and Mr. Purdys
class, but she says she will miss her friends
the most. Erica dreams of one day living in
a big city and her best advice is to follow
your passion.
Jordyn Robarge plans to
attend Augsburg College to
study biology and wants to
become an optometrist. She
was a swimmer and in jazz,
band, NHS and Knowledge
Bowl. Her favorite memories are of swim meets with the team and
Jordyn says she will miss her friends the
most.
Laurel Pietrzak was also
a swimmer who qualified
for the state meet three times
and took second place in
Poetry Out Loud in her junior year. Laurel was a mem-

diseases. She plans to major in biology
and minor in chemistry and Spanish.
Her favorite class was algebra II and
pre-calculus with Mrs. Prigge. Laurels
advice is dont waste time.

joined Big Lake as a high
school freshman. She has
participated in volleyball,
NHS, YDYS-Leos Club,
jazz

Mississippi 8 Conference
Band.
Caitlin plans to major in chemistry at
the College of St. Benedict and become
a forensic scientist. Her favorite class
was painting with Mrs. Sanchez and she
says she will miss the support system
she has in Big Lake with her friends.
Caitlin earned the Grand Knights
Award.

because they work on interesting projects and he has a lot of wisdom.
