Effect of Control Valve Sizing and Flow

Characteristic on Controllability
This one hour webinar discusses the difference between a control valves inherent and
installed flow characteristic, and defines the two most commonly found inherent flow
characteristics. Rules of thumb are presented for selecting the correct inherent flow
characteristic for a particular application and selecting the correct size control valve, along with
technical justification for these rules of thumb. Each participant will receive a certificate of
completion in the mail.

Who should attend?

Technicians and engineers who want to gain insight into selecting
control valves that will do the best possible job of controlling a
process, or who want to be able to recognize when poor control is
being caused by an improperly selected control valve.

Agenda

Inherent and installed flow characteristics defined

Rules of thumb used for selection of valve size and
inherent flow characteristic
Technical justification for the use of these rules of thumb
Effect of proper control valve sizing on controllability
Importance of selecting the proper inherent flow characteristic for good controllability

The speaker, Dr. Jon F. Monsen, PE, is a Control Valve Technology Specialist at Valin Corporation
where he specializes in training, control valve applications, and smart digital products. Prior to
joining Valin, he was a technology specialist at Metso Automation (parent company of Neles and
