foginanatmosphereofominousanticipation.ThevoiceofDr.Jekyllisheardover
thedin.Hespeaksofdualityofmanandthestrugglewithinhimbetweenhis
inherentlygoodsideandhisevilnature.
JohnUtterson,amiddleagedlawyer,entersandaddressestheaudience.Dr.Jekyll,
hisfriendandclient,wasengagedinasearchtodiscovertheelementsofgoodand
evilpresentineverypersonality.
ACTONE
Scene1:Dr.JekyllandDanversareinanightmarishhospitalwardinLondon
sometimearound1885.Partiallydressedbodiesarestrappedtowoodentableson
onesideofseparatingglass,asDoctors,Nurses,Attendants,andVisitorsmove
aboutontheothersideoftheglass.Dr.HenryJekyll,UttersonandSirDanversare
lookingdownatanOldManwhoisstrappedtoabed.Jekyllexplainsthathehas
almostperfectedaformulathatwillhelphimtoreintegratetheOldMan'smind
andemotions.JekyllpromisestheOldMan,whoishisownfather,thathewillfind
awaytohelphim("LostintheDarkness").Hekisseshisfather'sbrowandexits
intotheLondonnight.Ashegoeshesingsoftheanguishhefeelsforhisfather's
plightandhisstruggletofindthesolution.("INeedtoKnow")
Scene2:Acrowd,includingBeggars,Hawkers,Stevedores,Sailors,Ladiesand
Gentlemen,andTradespeople,gathersinfrontofabrickwall.Theysingofthe
"Facade"thateveryoneshowstotheworldwhilehidingtheirprivate,otherself.
Scene3:Asthecrowddisperses,thewalldisappearstorevealtheoperating
theatreofaclinic.Uttersonwatchesfromtheperipheryoftheoperatingtheatreas
SimonStridecallstoorderthemeetingoftheBoardofGovernorsofSt.Jude's
Hospital.AsJekyllwaits,Strideintroducestheotherattendingmembers:Sir
Danvers,thepresidingofficer,TheBishopofBasingstoke,TheRightHonourable
ArthurProops,LordSavage,LadyBeaconsfieldandGenerelLordGlossop.Jekyll
presentshisproposaltotestagroundbreakingformulahehascreatedthatwill
separatetheduanaturesofman.Jekyllexplainshistheory:thatineachperson
therearetwopersonalities,onegoodandoneevil,whichareconstantlyatwar;he
suggeststhatitispossibletoseparatethesetwowarringpersonalitiesandto
isolatethefunctional,goodcomponentfromthedysfunctional,evilcomponent.He
tellstheboardthathehasdiscoveredacombinationofdrugsthatcanisolatethese
twopersonalitiesandaskspermissiontotesthisdrugonhospitalpatients.When
theboardmembersexpresstheirmisgivingsandvotetowithholdtheirconsentfor
hisexperiments,Jekyllangrilyinsiststhattheboardgrantshimpermission.

Aftertheboardmembersleave,JekylltellsUttersonthattheboardmembersare
foolsandhypocrites,andwondershowhecanpursuehisexperiments;Utterson
tellshimthatheshouldcontinuewithhisworkifhebelievesinit("Pursuethe
Truth").
Scene4:AtthelavishengagementpartyforDr.JekyllandSirDanvers'Daughter,
Emma,ladiesandgentlemen,discusstheabsurdityofDr.Jekyll'stheoriesand
wonderwhytheintensescientistislateforhisacelebrationofwhichheisaguest
ofhonor.LadyBeaconsfieldalsoadmonishesSirDanversthatheshouldn'tlet
EmmamarryJekyll.SimonStrideasksEmmatoreconsiderhermarriagetoJekyll;
shetellshimthatsheisn'ttheweakwomanthatheishopingtomarry("Emma's
Reasons").Jekyllentersastwomaleguestslamentthatthemuchsoughtafter
Emmaisabouttobemarried.JekyllapologizestoSirDanversforhislatenessand,
withUtterson,discussestheearliermeeting.WhenEmmaandJekyllhaveaprivate
moment,hetellsherthatheisconcernedthathislifeofresearchandexperiment
wouldmakeherunhappy;Emmareassureshimthatshelovesandacceptshimas
heisandbegsthathe"TakeMeAsIAm"inturn.Emma'sfatherandUtterson
enter.JekyllexitswithUtterson,andSirDanversmentionsthathe,isalso
concernedwithJekyll'sbehavior.WhenEmmaprotests,headmitsthatheishaving
trouble"LettingGo".
Scene5:InaveryroughneighborhoodinEastLondon,Nellie,aredhaired
prostitute,strollsinfrontofherestablishment,RedRat.AnaprehensiveUtterson
andJekyllarestrollingthestreetsofthisseemiersideofLondon.Jekyllwantstogo
insideandhechidesUttersonfornotgivinghimaproperbachelorparty.Asthey
entertheRedRat,themeninsidearescreamingandclamoringfortheevening's
entertainment.Finally,Lucy,aprostituteandactress,entersfromatopastaircase
inaprovacativereddresswhichcausestheuproariousmentoimmediatelyquiet.
Sheentertainsthemenwithaprovacativeandfestivenumber"BringOntheMen."
AfterthesongLucybeginstocirculateamongtheclientele.ShegoestoJekyllas
Nellie,theprostitutefrombefore,spiritsUttersonaway.JekyllandLucyaredrawn
toeachotherinawaythatpromiseseachofthemagreatfriendship.Utterson
reemergesandJekylladmitsthathemustbeonhisway.Beforehegoeshegives
Lucyhisvisitingcardandaskshertoseehimshouldsheeverneedanything.
Spider,thethugwhoownstheclub,approachesLucyandstrikesherhardacross
thefacefornotenticingthegentlemenenoughtomakethesale.
Scene6:JekyllandUttersonhavearrivedinfrontofJekyll'shouse.Jekyll,
noticeablyinmuchbetterspirits,crypticallytellsUttersonthathehasfinally
discoveredhisvolunteerfortestingthepotient.AwearyUttersonbidsJekyll
goodnight.Jekyll,aloneattheendoftheevening,standsbeforetheblazingfire,
staresintoalargemirrorabovethemantelpieceandrealizes"ThisIstheMoment"
hehasbeenwaitingfor.Hewillbehisownpatient.Ashesings,thewallsofhis
officevanishtorevealthelaboratory.Thelaboratoryiscrowdedwithtablesfilled
withvialsandpotientsandallkindsofscientificequipment.Hewritesanentryin
hisjournalexplaininghisactionsanddrinksdownthepotient.Hewaitsfora
changewithinginhimbutnothinghappensuntilheisseizedwithanexcruciating
pain.Heattemptstocontinuewritingdownallofhisresponses,buthisbodyis
grippedagainwithpain.Ashestaggersabouttheroom,hisbodyistransforming:
heiscrouchednowandhisvoicehasananimallikerasp.Ashestruggleswiththe
changesoccurringwithinhim,hecontinues,futilely,totrytorecordwhatis
occurring.Itistoolate:JekyllhasbeentransformedintoEDWARDHYDE,who
laughsmaniacallyatbeingsetfree.
Scene7:Hyde,nowinthestreetsofLondon,giddilyenjoysthefeelofbeing"Alive"
andpossessingunconquerablepowerandevil.HeseesLucy,andbeginstofollow
herthroughthedarkalleysasshemakesherroundslookingforclients.Hecatches
uptoherandcaressesheratfirstgentlysothatshethinksheisapotentialclient.
Histouchbecomesmoreandmoreviolentuntilshefinallymanagestoescapeand
runaway.
Scene8:Severalweekslater,EmmaandUttersonareescortedoutofJekyll's
housebyhismanservant,Poole.EmmaisworriedeventhoughPooletellsherthat
Jekyllconstantlyasksabouther.Sheknowsheisconsumedbyhisworkbutfears
heisrunninghimselfdown.UttersonpromisestospeaktoPoole.AfterEmma
departs,PooleadmitsthatJekyllisbehavingerratically.Hehasn'tseenJekyllfora
weekbutmerelylayshismealsattheLaboratorydoor.HealsotellsUttersonthat
hehasheardanotherman'svoiceaswellassomeone'sheartwrenchingcriesat
nightintheLab.JustthenJekyllappears,disheveled,weary,butimpassioned,and
instructsPooletogototheapothecarytogetsomechemicalsheneeds.Utterson
cannotbelievethechangesinhisfriend.HeimploresHenrytostepbackfromhis
questelsehewillbe"HisWorkandNothingMore"MeanwhileEmmaandher
father,DanversargueabouttheprudenceofEmma'smarriagetoamanwhoseems
tobefallingintoaneverdeepeningabyss.Emmaagaintellsherfatherthatshe
understandsthatJekyll'sworkisimportant.UttersonexitsasPooleentersJekyll's
officeandannouncesthatayoungwomanhasarrivedwithJekyll'scard.Jekyll
realizesthatitisLucyandtellsPooletosendherin.Sheremindshimofhisofferto
helpher.Sheshowshimbruisesonherbackandshoulders;asJekylldressesher
wounds,shementionsthatEdwardHydehascausedthem.LucytellsJekyllthathe
isthefirstgentlemantotreathernicelyandhowgreatfulsheisforhis"Sympathy,
Tenderness"
WhenJekyllhasfinisheddressingLucy'swounds,shethankshimwithakiss.Lucy
leavesJekyll'shouseanddreamsofhoweasyitwouldbetolove"SomeoneLike
You"ifJekyllcouldonlylovesomeonelikeher.
Scene9:NellieleadstheBishopofBasingstokeoutofhershabbyhousenearThe
RedRat.TheBishoppaysNellieforherampleservices.AfterNellieretiresintothe
house,theBishopismetbyHyde,whoappearsbeforehimholdingawalkingstick
withaheavypewterknob.HydetauntstheBishop,finallycallinghimahypocrite
andsmashingtheBishop'sheadwiththeknobofthewalkingstick.Hydegleefully
continuesbeatingtheBishop.Hyderevelsinthekillingandagainrelishesthe
freedomandpowerofbeing"Alive(Reprise)"
ACTTWO
Scene1:ThetownspeopleofLondongossipaboutthehideousmurderofthepoor
oldbishop.("Murder,Murder").AsGlossopandSavageemergefromtheBishop's
funeral,Hydeapproachesthem.HebreaksGeneralGlossop'sneckwhileSavage
managestoescape.ThenextdaywhileLondonnowhasanotherbrutalmurderto
discuss,JekyllmeetsBissetformorechemicals.Heissurlyandtiredandvery
secretivewiththekindchemist.Later,LadyBeaconsfield,ProopsandSavageare
outsidetheveryposh"MayfairClub".Hydetauntsthemfromtheshadows.Lord
Savage,notknowingwhoheis,threatenstheintruder.Hydeemergesfromthe
darknessandstabsProops.Mortallywounded,hefallstothegroundinfrontofa
horrifiedLadyBeaconsfieldandSavage.HydethengrabsLadyBeaconsfieldand
berateshervanity.Hetearsofftheexquisitejewelsfromaroundherneck,hands
themtoabeggar,andthenstranglesher.LordSavage,onceagaintakingadvantage
ofaclosefriend'sdemise,managestoescape.NextSirDanversmeetsanagitated
LordSavageatthetrainstation.Savagehasrealizedthatheisnextontheevil
Hyde'slistofenemies.HehasdecidedtoleaveposthasteforScotland.Assoonas
DanversbidsSavageadieu,Hydeappearsfrombehindabillowofsteamandsnaps
theillfatedSavage'sneck.ThegruesomemurdersarethetalkofLondonpapers
andsociety.
Scene2:EmmaentersthedarkroomthatisJekyll'sLaboratory.Sheisreading
Jekyll'sjournalwhenthesoundofakeyinthelockstartlesher.Jekyllentersandis
immediatelywaryofherpresence.Sheimploreshimtoremember"OnceUpona
Dream"whentheywere"lostinlove'sembrace"whentheyembarkedonthis
scientificjourneytogether.Jekylladmitshelovesherandbegshernottoabandon
him.Emmapromises,"Whenyouneedme,ifyouneedme,youknowwhereI'llbe."
ShegoesandJekyllmakesanentryinhisjournal.Heislosingcontrolofwhenhe
transformsandfearsthatheisriskingdeath.Uttersonknocksonthedoor.Jekyll
hidestheformula,closeshisjournal.HeunlocksthedoorandUttersonenters
questioningtheletterthatJekyllwrotehimleavingEdwardHydehissoleheir.
Althoughstillconcerned,Uttersonpromisestofollowhiswishesandtodeliver
somechemicalsfromBisset.Aloneagain,Jekyllwonders"WhatStreakofMadness"
istryingtoovertakehim.AsJekylllooksinthemirrorhisimagechangesintothe
imagesofLucyandEmma.Jekyllswoons.Bothimagesofthewomenreminisce
abouttheirfeelingsforJekyllandthewealthofloveandcompassiontheyfind"In
HisEyes."
Scene3:Lucyisaloneat"TheRedHat."Jekyllappearshuddledintheshadows.
Sheisdelightedtoseehim.OutoftheshadowsstepsHyde.Hetellsherhewillbe
goingawayforawhileandthreatenshershouldshenotbewaitingwhenshegets
back.Despiteherself,Lucyisdrawntohisvoice.Ashecaressesher,shenotesthe
coldnessofhistouchandwondersatthe"DangerousGame"sheisplayingwiththe
madman.
Scene4:AttheLaboratorylateatnight,Hydeisslumpedinanarmchair.Utterson
tentativelyknocksandthenenterstheunlockeddoorlookingforHenry.Hyde
admitsthatJekyllwillneverreturn.Utterson,determinedtodelivertherare
chemicalstohisfriendpersonally,turnsupthelightsandisdismayedtosee
Jekyll'sjournalatHyde'sfeetandtheLabincompletedisarray.Hedemandstosee
hisfriend.Hydechucklesandthenagrees.Hedrinksthepotionandtransforms
intoanexhaustedJekyllinfrontofUtterson'sveryeyes.Jekyllbegshisfriendto
helphimasthereisnotmuchtime.HeasksUttersontotakemoneytoLucyand
beghertoleavetown.UttersonleavesandJekyllvowstofindapotiontoridhimof
Hyde.Ashebeginstomixtheformulahesuffersthe"Angst(2)"ofnotknowingif
hewilllosehismindforever.
Scene5:UttersonandLucyareinherroomat"TheRedHat".Uttersondelivers
Jekyll'sletterandthemoneyhehasleftforher.UttersonexitsandLucydreamsof
"ANewLife."Sheliesonthebedandcloseshereyes,dreamingofhernewlife,
whenHydeemergesfromtheshadowsandlightsadimlamp.Hereadstheletter
Jekylllefther.Lucy,bothdrawntohimandterrified,promisesshewouldn'tleave
him.Hestabsherrepeatedlywhilesingingaboutthesweetnesstobefoundinher
face("Sympathy,Tenderness"Reprise).Ashudderpassesthroughhimanditis
HenryJekylllefttostandbeforeLucy'slifelessbloodstainedbody.
Scene6:AstormbrewsoutsideofJekyll'sdevastatedlaboratory.Jekyllentersand
looksinthemirror.Hebattleshisevilalteregoin"TheConfrontation"whereHyde
vowstoliveinsidehimforever.Jekyllhurlsabeakerandshattersthemirror.
Thereissuddendarkness.Abitterchemicalpermeatestheair.
Scene7:Thecompanysings"Facade(Reprise)"asUttersonnarrates.Jekyllknew
thatthewaybacktosanitywouldbetreacherous."Yetbackfromthedeadhe
came,tothesoundofweddingbells".Guestsappearatthechurchforthewedding
ofHenryJekyllandEmmaCarew.SirDanversleadshisdaughteruptheaisle
whereJekyllawaits.TheMinisterbeginstheceremony.SuddenlyJekylldoubles
overinpainasHydeemergesandtakesover.Stride,aguestatthewedding,tries
toovertakethemaniacalgroombutHydeistoofastforhim,grabshimandsnaps
hisneck.HydegrabsEmmaanddragshertowardthealtar.Emmacallsoutto
HenryandvowshewillneverhurtherbecauseheisinsidetheevilHyde.Hyde
holdsherclose.Afteralongmomenthereleasesher.HydebegsUttersontokill
him.UttersonholdsabladetoHyde/Jekyll'sheartbutcannotharmhisfriend.
SuddenlyHyde/Jekyllfallsforwardontothesword.Emmacradlesthetortured
man.Whilesheweepssoftly,Jekylldiesinherarms.
