1. Use clinical reasoning to administer safe, effective, culturally competent nursing care
with clients experiencing complex health conditions consistent with professional standards,
current research findings, and theoretical concepts.
1-a. Under the guidance of the preceptor, the student will independently retrieve and
administer medications from the PYXIS by week 2.
1-b.

Under guidance of the preceptor, the student will place an IV and hang IV
fluids and or medications by week 3.

1-c. The student will independently provide discharge teaching to a patient/family


by week 4.
1-d. The student will synthesize all relevant patient data (assessment, diagnostic
tests etc.) to determine nursing interventions by week 4.
1-e.

Under guidance of preceptor, student will perform the insertion of


straight/Foley catheter by week 4.

1-f. Under guidance of preceptor, the student will participate in a code by week
5.
2. Use communication techniques with clients and other health care professionals to promote
and manage change.
2-a. The student will effectively and clearly give and receive report by the end of
week 4.
2-b. The student will document accurate, comprehensive entries in an organized
manner using correct terminology, and following hospital guidelines for content
and timeliness of entries by the end of week 5.
2-c. The student will develop, document, and implement a comprehensive
teaching plan with a patient and family by week 5.
2-d. The student will independently present a patient during patient rounds by week
6.
3. Implement leadership and management skills in planning, providing, delegating,
coordinating and evaluating the care of clients.
3-a. The student will independently manage the care of 2 clients under the
supervision of the preceptor by week 6.
3-b. The student will delegate appropriate care to a PCA under the guidance of the
preceptor within week 3.

3-c. The student will actively participate in a care conference by week 5.


4. Integrate knowledge and technology while providing compassionate care for clients.
4-a. The student will analyze and monitor diagnostic test data to make accurate
decisions about patient care by week 3.
4-b. The student will accurately program an IV pump, check blood glucose with a
glucometer by week 3.
4-c. The student will demonstrate expertise with the hospitals electronic medical
record system by week 6.
5. Synthesize theoretical, legal, ethical, and regulatory components while becoming
socialized into the role of the professional nurse.
5-a. The student will visit the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses website. The
student will include information from the website in the portfolio under
miscellaneous by week 4.
5-b. The student will select a policy that is implemented on their unit and explain how
they implemented that policy by week 5.
5-c. The student will identify the ethical resources for their institution and discuss
how to access and implement them with their preceptor by week 6.
