The Pope A Real PRO!

es, Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, came a relative stranger and left possibly another founding father.
His respect for America was present in every moment.
He was obviously Pro-Life, Pro-Family, Pro-Poor, Pro- Environment! His "pro" positions are a natural consequence of whom
he really is...a life long trained Jesuit and Parish Priest.
Then, Mr. Bergoglio, worked briefly as a chemical technologist
and nightclub bouncer...briefly just prior to beginning his religious
studies...but nonetheless.
I firmly believe that "we" had as much of an effect on His Holiness as he had on America...Americans, regardless of faith, religious affiliation. For a moment it almost felt that we were at
peace...in the world. Hopefully his many faceted messages touched
everyone in some small way.
Will our churches have greater attendance? Will our Pastors
speak to the family about using a quieter voice? Will our Bishop's
follow the doctrine on those who violate their vows?
Yes, this was a Catholic world leader...but I have found few
amongst us who did not relate to him as a universal voice for the
Golden Rule. That alone should be celebrated.
This Pope took precious time on his first visit to the United
States to help lead an Interfaith celebration...regardless of the
name of your God... the Faith, Family and Forgiveness theme
seems lasting.
God Bless America, Home of the Brave - Land of the Brave.

Will I Live
To Be 80?
Here's something to think about.

I recently picked a new primary care doctor.

After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, he
said I was doing 'fairly well' for my age. (I just
turned "seventy").
A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't
resist asking him,
'Do you think I'll live to be 80?'
He asked, 'Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer,
wine or hard liquor?
'Oh no,' I replied. 'I'm not doing drugs, either!'
Then he asked, 'Do you eat rib-eye steaks and
barbecued Ribs?
'I said, 'Not much... my former doctor said that
all red meat is very unhealthy!'
'Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?
'No, I don't,' I said.
He asked, 'Do you
gamble, drive fast
cars, or have a lots of
sex?'
'No,' I said. He
looked at me and said,
'Then, why do you even
give a even darn?' Yup, I got
the message...Made a reservations at the Casino with a
new friend who
plays golf and
loves
to
hike...the rest
of it we will
have to wait

up...this happened..."After lying on

left me in agony. After examining me, the

Costa Mesa
Historical Society's
50th Anniversary
Year Celebration
By Chris MacDonald, Writer/Photographer,
HB Ambassador/The Local News Columnist

T

he Costa Mesa Historical Society recently launched the kick-off of a yearlong celebration honoring it's 50th
Anniversary. There were tours of the impressive museum, talks by society pioneers and
a debut performance of "Forever Young," a
group of professional entertainers, mostly in
their 90s!
Tour Guide Kathy Bequette explained historical exhibits showing wickiups (huts covered with brush wood or grass) that served
the Native Americans in the Costa Mesa area.
"If they had a flea problem, they would burn
down their wickiups and build another," Bequette said. She even showed cogstones that
were used by the Indians in warfare as well
as food preparation. Nancy Pedersen also
gave interesting tours..
Lucky visitors to the event, which drew
over 100 history-conscious characters, enjoyed seeing a variety of exhibits on the
Santa Ana Air Base (where pilots were
trained in World War II); the Segerstrom

Costa Mesa by the Segerstroms. The society
maintains the structure and gives tours inside
on the first and third Saturdays from 12-4 (or
by appointment, 949-631-5918).
During the society's "Flashback" celebration, panel moderator Cindy Humphreys
asked society founding members, Hank Panian and Helen Vidal Humphreys about the
CMHS heritage. "The city was very cooperative in helping us develop the society," said
Helen, who grew up in Huntington Beach.
"They'd ask, 'What can we do to help?'" (That
brought smiles to the faces of attendees like
Costa Mesa Mayor Steve Mensinger, Mayor
Pro-Tem Jim Righeimer and City Council
member Sandy Genis.) Vice President Terry
Shaw (whose late father, Bob, was also on
the society's board) told the excited audience
about several special events in the 50th Anniversary Year, including a huge celebration
at the adobe in August of 2016. (For further
information go to CostaMesaHistory.org or

and the Diego Sepulveda Adobe Estancia
(which you can see in its full splendor at
1900 Adams Ave.). "The adobe was Costa
Mesa's first motel," quipped Hank Panian,
one of the original society members.
Cattle were raised (in what became the
Costa Mesa area) and the adobe was built to
shelter the herdsman, who tended the critters
for Mission San Juan Capistrano. Built
sometime between 1817-1823, the adobe
later became the property of Don Diego
Sepulveda, a former alcalde for the Pueblo
of Los Angeles, and then went through a series of owners until the Segerstrom family
purchased it in 1940. In 1963, the adobe and

did a marvelous
job
chairing the
event, which
had many enthusiastic volunteers,
including a
Golden Anniversary
Committee.
One of the
highlights
was the performance of
"Forever Young." Some of the group's main
stars included a former tap dancer for MGM
and "The Little Rascals, " Sid Hallburn, 91
(who danced when he was 3 on stage with
legendary Banjo King Eddie Peabody); Fr.
Christian Mondor, Ph.D., 90 (a banjoist, who
once played with Peabody); Fr. Al George,
85 (who played clarinet for the Air Force and
LA Rams bands), and Dr. Thomas Penderghast, 80, a top guitar musician and former Pepperdine professor. (For further
information, email justlisted@yahoo.com
and put "Forever Young" on the subject line.)

DOO DAH-DOO DAH

BB JAZZ
one of her favorites just before she began singing one of James classics. Emotion pored
forth from Varners high-pitched harmonies and the crowd was very receptive to them.
Closing Saturdays show was Faith Evans, who caused a ruckus back stage as she filmed
scenes for her reality show R&B Divas. Evans looked enthusiastic and lively, as donned
a sexy, hourglass figure covered by a
modest, white-sequenced pencil skirt and
heels.
Sunday brought out a more laid back
crowd as chart toppers Joe and Kelly Price
were among the festivals highlights.
Song writing became the central theme
to artist Kelly Prices late afternoon performance as she went down the list of
songs that she wrote for other singers including Mace, R-Kelly and others.
Incredible, explained Price when
asked about her ghost writing experiences, When I would hear them on the radio, I would
literally just freak out, because, number one, youre talking about artists like Puff Daddy,
Faith Evans, 112. One of the most recent in the last couple of years, which was an amazing song writing experience for me, came with a placement on Bonnie Raitts last Grammy
winning album, Slipstream, where I wrote a song that I wanted to get to her years ago.
Anticipation built as the one and only Sheila E. and her band geared up to perform.
Sheila is known as a hard-core performer, even performing with a broken wrist still inside
a cast at the Wilshire-Ebell Theater last year and this performance was no different, as she
jumped and twirled her drumsticks even coming off the stage and singing to the crowd
way back in the general admission grassy hill that overlooked the VIP and stage.
Joe closed out the show, and he was, by far, the ladies favorite.
Upcoming shows by BB Jazz Promotions include Kindred The Family Soul on October
10 at the Huntington Beach Library, 7111 Talbert Ave. Huntington Beach, CA 92648.

Not Just a Successful Real Estate Company Owner

ongtime H.B. resident and real estate business owner Charles Hewlett, believes that
service to others is the primary purpose in
life. He actualizes this belief in his daily life.
Apart from running his business, Seapointe Properties on a full time basis, he still finds the time
to serve his community, his church, and his
friends & family.
Charles sponsors cub scout pack #278 in H.B.,
has served on the board of the YMCA, is especially active in his church (St. Bonaventure) as a
member of the Parish Council, volunteers as visiting the home bound/sick. Additionally, has
worked tirelessly for many charitable causes such
as Orphan children's Foundation and the YMCA.
I spoke to a couple of the folks Charles visits
and helps through his church who had these kind
words to say about him.
"My friend, Charles Hewlett, is what I call a
giver. Some givers do that in order to find out
what they can get in return. Thats not Charles.
My personal connection with him is to receive
a ride to Church every week. That doesnt sound
like a big deal until you hear the rest of the story.
I can no longer drive, and live several miles
away on the other side of town. Without fail
every Sunday he picks me up and takes me back
home.

From 7 to 9 p.m., we
hear true, six-minute tales
of OMG, defining, or hilarious moments in peoples lives, says producer,

The audience votes as well
as a small panel of educators

more appreciated than most of you can imagine.
I have tried to figure out a way to support this
giver, but I found that he is truly not a getter.
I know that he gives many hours of service to
Church projects, to Boy Scouts, and
to our community..I am blessed to
have him as a friend". Pat
"As a stranger from a distant land, I
have fortunately enjoyed many new
experiences since settling in Huntington Beach.
Through contacts at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, I have been
blessed with kindness and the genuine
caring friendship of Charles Hewlett.
Charles has been generous with his
advice and time when ever I needed
help with various problems. I was
aware that his knowledge regarding
real estate problems would help me in situations
that were unfamiliar to me.
I also requested Charles advice in personal
problems such as end-of-life and funeral arrangements. In these situations again, Charles was able
to give me useful contact suggestions, to help me
resolve my questions.

Charles also frequently offers to pick up groceries for me when shopping at the local grocery
store.
I am especially delighted that we both share
keen palates for Oriental foods. We frequently
have lunch at a few local eateries which special-

ize in Indian / Asian cuisines". Petronella we

know Charles personally. H is simply just a nice
guy with a kind heart. The two testimonials above
and just a couple of many that flow to Charles.
He is a role model. He could attend any place of
worship...work in any profession. Charles
Hewlett is Charles Hewlett.. Thank God.e

AUTUMN JOHNSON (Patch Staff) feels ion the pick
on this one..."A coalition of breast cancer survivors and
their supporters came to the Bay Area last week to help
launch the sales of pink ribbon California license plates that
will help fund breast cancer screening for undeserved Californians.
The organizers of the California Pink Ribbon License Plate campaign must acquire
7,500 pre-orders

of the pink
license plates before August
2016, which is when the California Department
of Motor Vehicles issues license plates, according to campaign spokesman Steve Maviglio.
According to organizers, the pink ribbon license plates
were created to promote a message of awareness regarding
the importance early detection while helping fund the states
Every Woman Counts program, which is administered by
the California Department of Health Care Services.
Its a visible symbol on the road, a constant reminder,
Maviglio said. Also, 30 other states already have [pink license plates benefiting breast cancer].
The pink breast cancer license plates graduated from idea

to reality in September 2014 when Gov. Jerry Brown signed

Assembly Bill 49, the bill permitting the creation of the license plates. The legislation was authored in 2013 by thenstate Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan, D-Alamo, and was
unanimously approved by the Legislature.

Clinics are facing budget cuts, Maviglio said.
This is a way to provide some more stable funding.
The license plates cost $50 for a standard pink license
plate and $98 for a personalized plate.
The goal is to help fund the program, which will save
the lives of countless women, Maviglio said. We want to

that starts to drag out into your arm and up in to your jaw.

6) HOW TO SURVIVE A
HEART ATTACK WHEN
ALONE?
Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack
without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly
and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left
before losing consciousness.

7) However, these victims can help themselves by coughing

repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be

taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and
prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the
chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every
two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the
heart is felt to be beating normally again.

8) Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing

movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating.
The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart
attack victims can get to a hospital.
9) Tell as many other people as
possible about this. It could
save their lives!

Our Solution
S

yracuse University has kissed

By Jordan Kobritz its Kiss Cam goodbye - at least temporarily - after one fan wrote a letter to the editor
claiming that it sends the wrong message at a time
when colleges are campaigning against sexual violence on campus.
During a football game against Wake Forest, Steve
Port said he witnessed two instances where women
were forcibly kissed by men despite clearly saying no.
According to Port, the University is encouraging and
condoning sexual assault and a sense of male entitlement, at best, and an actual instance of assault, at
worst.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with how a Kiss
Cam works, during breaks in the action at sporting
events a camera pans the crowd then focuses on a pair
of individuals, usually a man and a woman, who are
shown on the Jumbotron for all to see. The featured couple is expected to
smooch, whereupon they receive a round of applause from the crowd. Reluctant participants are roundly booed. If there is any hesitation or reluctance by either individual including a head shake or mouthing the word
no the cameraman should quickly move on in search of more willing
participants. That apparently wasnt the case at Syracuse where the camera
lingered until the male egged on by the crowed forcibly planted a kiss
on the female.
Such action is totally unacceptable, in this or any age. Forcibly touching
someone without their permission is battery, a crime in every jurisdiction.
But is it necessary to kill the fun for everyone because of one incident and
one complaint (it should be noted that neither of the female participants in

the incidents witnessed by Port filed a complaint)? In light of some campus behavior,
what happened at Syracuse was clearly inappropriate and counterproductive. But if the
camera operator had been better trained or
perhaps had more common sense the result
would have been different.
Syracuse football isnt the only athletic team
whose Kiss Cam has run afoul of the PC police. The New York Mets began receiving criticism in April for its propensity to show two
players from the opposing team on the Jumbotron. The players viewed the practice as a
joke but a number of fans complained it was offensive to gay people. Last week the team issued an apology and said it would discontinue
the practice although use of the Kiss Cam would
not be suspended.
Are the complaints against the Kiss Cam
merely a tempest in a teapot, a sign that if even one person in society could
be offended by something that the PC police are obligated to spoil the fun
for the majority? Or are we, as Port suggests, encouraging male entitlement? As usual, questions are easier raised than answers are to come by.

After reaching the highest level

home sales downshifted to a twoyear high for the month of August,
said Andrew LePage, a data analyst

categories, counties and price

decline could be a reflection of a
tightening of inventory of homes

have had on affordability.

ocal residents have a large

stake in the proposed Poseidon
Desalination Project (Project),
which would be located
adjacent to the AES
Beach
Huntington
Power Station on
Pacific Coast Highway. I would like to
provide an update on
the Project and the
County
Orange
Water Districts consideration of purchasing water from the project.
Coastal Commission review
The Commissions Independent Scientific Technical
Advisory Panel has released a feasibility study of intake
technologies that would minimize ocean environmental
impacts. The panels conclusion was that building an alternate subsurface intake system would have significant
environmental impacts due to construction and is not economically viable within a reasonable period of time.
I served as mayor of Huntington Beach when the environmental documents were certified for this project in 2010.
The issue of subsurface intakes was extensively evaluated
and debated over these many years. Ultimately, the City
Council determined that the extensive construction schedule
and beach impacts associated with building a subsurface intake system was not something our community could support. This construction would last from 5 to 7 years and
would disrupt approximately 26 acres of seafloor, significantly disturbing the marine and onshore environment
around the beach, while also adversely affecting the local
economy by rendering the beach unusable for residents and
tourists, and increasing the site's environmental footprint
from greenhouse gas emissions.
Based on the feasibility study of the Scientific Technical
Advisory Panel, Poseidon resubmitted its application to the
Commission on September 1st. It proposes to reduce the
daily intake of seawater that would be drawn through ex-

isting facilities at the nearby power plant from 127 to 106

million gallons per day. The 17 percent reduction in seawater intake, combined with the implementation of 1 millimeter screens should significantly minimize the overall impact
to planktonic marine life. Poseidon also plans to improve
its discharge system to reduce salinity impacts to the ocean.
OCWDs role
The Orange County Water District has an ongoing commitment to provide a reliable and sustainable water
supply to our local communities.
OCWD is exploring

ocean desalination as a way to increase

local water supplies. This new source of clean
water would reduce the regions dependence on imported
water sources. OCWD is committed to an open process, a
thorough evaluation and assurances that a desalination plant
will not cause significant environmental harm.
After a thorough citizens review panel process, OCWDs
board of directors voted in May to approve a term sheet with
Poseidon for the possible purchase of desalinated water. The
term sheet provides the basic structure for negotiations between OCWD and Poseidon to develop a final purchase
agreement. Any draft agreement to purchase water from

Poseidon will be
thoroughly reviewed
by its team of experts,
and will be open for public
discussion at its board meetings.
In addition, OCWD staff and directors will be making
presentations throughout the district to provide updates
about groundwater conditions, the final expansion of the
Groundwater Replenishment System, and the Project.
OCWD currently has a Programs and Projects section
on its existing website dedicated to ocean desalination exploration. Its newly redesigned website will provide additional information about ocean desalination when it debuts
in October.

Desalination:
An Update

Status of the OCWD Groundwater Basin

The Orange County Groundwater Basin is effectively
an underground storage reservoir. The useable storage
volume of the groundwater basin is about 500,000 acrefeet of water. As this storage water is used and the
groundwater basin is drawn down, problems with seawater intrusion can occur if the basin is not eventually
refilled. Groundwater production wells near the
coastline might be lost as they have been in the past.

The basin is 24 percent full and has already been drawn

down by 381,000 acre-feet. Through careful planning by
OCWD, the groundwater basin has played a large role in
keeping water supplies available and at normal levels during
the past four years of drought conditions. Unfortunately if
Mother Nature does not cooperate this winter, OCWD will
have to consider action to reduce groundwater pumping,
which could cause greater cuts in water usage by residents
and businesses in the area.
I look forward to providing you additional updates of this
proposed Project. If you have any questions or comments,
please submit them to oceandesalexploration@ocwd.com

Cathy Green was elected to OCWD in November 2010. She served two terms on the Huntington Beach
City Council and was Mayor twice. Huntington Beach has been home to the Green Family over 41 years

STRONG WOMEN Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) Model, actress,

singer and arguably one of the most famous
women of the twentieth century.

onroe was born, Norma Jeane Mortenson, in

June 1926. Her father was unknown and she was
baptised as Norma Jeane Baker; she spent many
years in foster homes because of her family situation.
Monroe married Jimmy Dougherty, in 1942. When he
left to the South Pacific to fight in the Second world War,
she joined a local munitions factory in Burbank, California.
It was here that Marilyn got her first big break. Photographer David Conover, was covering the munitions factory
to show women at work. He was struck by the beauty and
photogenic nature of Norma, and he used her in many of her shots. This enabled
her to start a career as a model and she was soon featured on the front of many
magazine covers.
1946 was a pivotal year for Marilyn, she divorced her young husband and
changed her name from the boring Norma Baker to the more glamorous Marilyn
Monroe (after her grandma). She took drama lessons and got her first movie contract with Twentieth Century Fox. Her first few films were low key, but, it gained
her more prominent roles in films such as All About Eve, Niagara and later Gentleman Prefer Blondes and How To Marry A Millionaire.
By now these film roles had thrust her into the
global limelight. She was an iconic figure of Hollywood glamour and fashion. She was an epitome
of sensuality, beauty and effervescence and was
naturally photogenic. She often found the trappings
of fame difficult to deal with.
In her later career, she tried to move beyond the
blonde bombshell typecasting and set up her own
movie production. She was awarded a golden globe
award for her role in Some Like It Hot
Tragically, she died early from an overdose of
barbiturates in 1962 aged just 36.

I am good, but not an angel. I do

sin, but I am not the devil. I am just a
small girl in a big world trying to
find someone to love.
~ Marilyn Monroe

Dear Earthtalk:
My company talks
the talk when it comes
to the environment but
could do so much more to reduce paper use. Do you
have any tips to help get the higher-ups on board to
reduce paper use company-wide?
~ Elena Sepulveda, White Plains, NY

Cutting back on paper may seem so 1990s given

the current focus of environmental organizations on
climate change and related global issues. But reducing paper use is still one of the best ways companies,
government agencies and institutions can help the environment during the course of day-to-day activities.
Getting a handle on just how much paper your entity could save is the first step. The non-profit Environmental Paper Network (EPN)an umbrella group

consumption and clean up the

with its Paper Calculator. The free online tool compares the environmental impacts of competing paper
products and assesses the larger impacts of paper use.
According to EPN, some of the tangible results of
its work include legal protection for millions of acres
of endangered forests, significant increases in the
number of paper-related certifications and forest acres
certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a
marked increase in the number of large companies developing environmental paper policies, vastly increased availability of genuine environmental papers
for consumers, and increased demand for, and use of,
recycled fibers.
EPN also makes available easy-to-read reports outlining the benefits of making more sustainable paper
choices. Showing companies the economic advantages of reducing their paper usage and greening other
aspects of operations has been key to building EPN's
membership and expanding its influence overall.
While joining EPN may be more of a commitment
than some entities are willing to make, there are
plenty of other free resources to
help reduce paper use and
green business operations. The non-profit

tips on responsible

Stony Hill Proves That

In California, What Is
Old Is New Again

rnot-Roberts. Lioco. Matthiasson. Sandhi.

These are just four of the producers that are
counteracting the notion that ripeness, butter,
and oak should define California Chardonnay. Across the country, thoughtful merchants and top sommeliers are showcasing
these producers -- and a few dozen others -- to show consumers that the Golden
State can offer elegant, restrained Chardonnay.
These producers came up last week while chatting with Sarah McCrea, the
third-generation proprietor of Stony Hill Vineyards in Napa Valley. McCrea's
family has been making graceful Chardonnay for more than six decades, and
thanks to these newer producers, more consumers than ever before are taking
notice.
McCrea appreciates the
attention -and doesn't
begrudge the
new kids.
"These
wines
are
reintroducing America
to a style of
wine that
went dormant for a
long time,"
she
explained.
"They're
reminding people
that there's a different way to make
Chardonnay."
McCrea's family has called Napa Valley home since 1943, when her grandparents, Fred and Eleanor, purchased a 160-acre goat ranch on Spring Mountain. They planted vines four years later, dedicating most of their property to
Chardonnay. In 1952, the McCreas finished a small winery on their property
and produced their first wine.
Especially fond of white Burgundy, Fred McCrea decided to ferment and
age his Chardonnay in neutral oak, believing that new wood would obscure
his wine's aromas and flavors. And he avoided malolactic fermentation -- the
secondary fermentation that's standard for reds and common with Chardonnay
-- preferring the tart intensity of malic acid to the softer, buttery flavors of lactic
acid.

Little
has
changed over the
past six decades.
As
vintners
across California
began chasing
ripeness -- and
thus, points -- in the 1990s, Stony Hill remained David White
steadfast in its commitment to restraint. So the winery gained a reputation for delivering fresh, aromatic
wines year after year. In addition to Chardonnay, Stony Hill produces small
amounts of Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Cabernet Sauvignon from its estate.
Stony Hill's winemaking style is now on the ascent. Sommeliers deserve
much of the credit; their ranks have swelled over the last decade and they've
convinced many consumers that elegance outperforms power at the dinner
table. Influential writers like Jon Bonn of Punch and Eric Asimov of the New
York Times deserve credit, too, for challenging conventions on ripeness and
praising the California vintners who weren't interested in fruit bombs.
Jon Bonn chronicled California's burgeoning shift from ripeness and power
toward subtlety and poise in his 2013 book, The New California Wine. But, as
McCrea pointed out, "New California" is a bit of a misnomer.
Bonn readily admits that there's nothing "new" about the California wines
he praises. The shift is really a return to the way things once were. As he explained in an interview last year, "there's finally this realization that what made
California great as a wine region is very much being explored again, and being
explored in a similar way to how it was successfully explored about 40 years
ago."
Consider Ridge Vineyards. The winery's style -- which the winemaker describes as "pre-industrial" -- has been remarkably consistent since its founding
in 1959. Its Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the greatest wines in
the world each and every year.
Or look at the wines from Stu and Charles Smith, the brothers behind Napa
Valley's Smith-Madrone. As the crow flies, their vineyard is virtually adjacent
to Stony Hill. Since 1977, the brothers have ignored just about every twist and
turn in winemaking fashions.
There's a market for unctuous, hedonistic wines, to be sure. But such wines
aren't part of California's natural order. As Bonn continued when we chatted
last year, "what's happening now is really a new iteration of the pioneering
spirit that put California on the world stage in the late '60s and early '70s."
Wines from popular, "New California" producers like Arnot-Roberts, Lioco,
Matthiasson, and Sandhi are reminiscent of a bygone era. And thanks to Stony
Hill, we know what that means.

Saudi Arabia: Air Conditioned Tents!

hile Europe takes the burden of the migrant

crisis
While European countries are being lectured
about their failure to take in enough refugees, Saudi
Arabia which has taken in precisely zero migrants has
100,000 air conditioned tents
that can house over 3 million
people sitting empty. The
sprawling network of high quality tents are located in the city of
Mina , spreading across a 20
square km valley, and are only
used for 5 days of the year by
Hajj pilgrims. As the website
Amusing Planet reports, For
the rest of the year, Mina remains pretty much deserted.
The tents, which measure 8
meters by 8 meters, were permanently constructed by the Saudi
government in the 1990s and
were upgraded in 1997 to be fire
proof. They are divided into
camps which include kitchen
and bathroom facilities.
The tents could provide shelter for almost all of
the 4 million Syrian refugees that have been displaced by the countrys civil war, which was partly
exacerbated by Saudi Arabias role in funding and
arming jihadist groups.

refugees more than a quarter of its population.

While it refuses to take in any more refugees, Saudi
Arabia has offered to build 200 mosques for the
500,000 migrants a year expected to pour into Germany .
Saudis argue that the tents in
Mina are needed to host the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca
, but given that the Arabic concept of Ummah is supposed to
offer protection to all Muslims
under one brotherhood, surely an
alternative location could be
found so that Mina can be repurposed to house desperate families
fleeing war and ISIS persecution?
While Europe is being burdened by potentially millions of
people who dont share the same
culture or religion as the host
population, Gulf Arab states refuse to pull their weight, resolving only to throw money at the
problem.
The likelihood of the Saudis

U.S. Court
Affirms
Batmobile's
Copyright
Wow!

(Reuters) - "The Batmobile, the

indispensable crime fighting vehicle driven by comic book hero Batman, has enough distinct character
traits to qualify for copyright protection, a U.S. appeals court has
ruled.
The 9th U.S. Circuit of Appeals
on Wednesday affirmed a ruling
against a manufacturer of replica
Batmobiles.
"As Batman so sagely told
Robin, 'In our well-ordered society,
protection of private property is essential,'" 9th Circuit Judge Sandra
Ikuta wrote for a unanimous three
judge panel.
Larry Zerner, an attorney for defendant Mark Towle who sells
replica Batmobiles for approximately
$90,000, said he was disappointed in the
ruling. The law specifically states that
automobile designs are not subject to
copyright, he said.
"My client just sells cars," Zerner said.
"The car is not a character. The car is a
car."
A spokesman for Time Warner Inc.
unit Warner Brothers, corporate parent
of DC Comics, declined to comment.
Towle runs a business called
Gotham Garage, where he sells repli-

cas of cars featured in movies and television shows, according to the ruling.
DC Comics sued him for copyright infringement in 2011, and a lower court
judge ruled for DC.
In the 9th Circuit ruling on Wednesday, Ikuta wrote that DC must prove it
owns a copyright in the Batmobile as it
appeared in the 1966 television series
and the 1989 movie starring Michael
Keaton.
"To the Batmobile!" she wrote.
Batman's vehicle has consistent char-

acter traits that can be protected by copyright, Ikuta wrote.

"No matter its specific physical appearance, the Batmobile is a 'crimefighting' car with sleek and powerful
characteristics that allow Batman to maneuver quickly while he fights villains,"
she wrote.
Additionally, there is no dispute that
DC created the Batman character, and
various licenses it has entered into over
the years did not transfer its underlying
property rights, Ikuta wrote."

Boomerang
Buyers

provide additional leverage to sustain the housing recovery. According to economic fundamentals, the increased demand supported by this
additional pool of buyers should work to propel
housing prices higher over the next five years.
For these buyers, the main thing most of them
want to know is how soon they can get back in.
While there are provisions which
will allow those with a prior
short sale or bankruptcy to purchase again after only one year,
the number of cases that actually
qualify will be few and far between. The extenuating circumstances guideline requires
an applicant to document that
the foreclosure / short sale was
the result of a significant and
sustained decrease in income.
Be prepared to provide tax returns to support the claim.
Most individuals with a
short sale or foreclosure in
their background will not be
able to meet the strict documentation requirements of
the extenuating circumstances provision. While
there are certainly many who truly did experiend of 2015. Those numbers are ex- ence a hardship, there were far more who simpected to jump to 1.5 million over the next three ply made a business decision to cut their losses
and walk away. These individuals will need to
years and 2.2 million over the next five years.
The impact of these additional buyers should wait a bit longer to get back in as homeowners.
oomerang buyers are expected to peak in
the US over the next five years. Very
simply, these are individuals who lost
their homes during the recent economic recession who will now look to get back in the housing market as homeowners once again.
Industry analysts expect over 700,000
boomerang buyers to purchase by the

Arnaud Dufour

While mortgages these days are all backed by

one government agency or another, there is no
consistency in the guidelines on when a creditblemished homeowner can get back into the
game.
The earliest these individuals could get back
in as homeowners would be through the VA.
Of course this is only available to Veterans,
but it does allow a boomerang buyer to get
back in only two years after a foreclosure or
short sale.
The next most forgiving program is through
the FHA. This allows a buyer to get back on
three years after a short sale or foreclosure. This
program tends to be the most popular amongst
boomerang buyers not only because of the relatively lax re-established credit requirements,
but also because it has the lowest down payment
requirement.
Conventional lending through Fannie Mae
and Freddie Mac are the least forgiving when it
comes to re-establishing oneself as a homebuyer. These agencies require four years to have
passed after a short sale, and seven years after a
foreclosure.
Understanding the different options as well as
the advantages and downsides of each program
will be critical in ensuring that the housing collapse we just went through doesnt repeat a second time around. For those looking to buy once
again, speak to a mortgage professional very
early on in the process. In fact, many believe it
should be the first call you make.

To create the list, we asked more than 1,000 Business Insider
