When I am an old woman I shall wear purple

With a red hat which doesnt go, and doesnt suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say weve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when Im tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other peoples gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry

And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Hello again!
What a wonderful summer we have had at
Purple Trust. Our clubs are becoming busier
and two more opening in October, see up and
Coming Events overleaf.
More requests for Jeff Becks chair based exercise classes
convince us of their positive contribution to our members
physical and mental well-being.
We urge all of you to spread the word of our services and if
possible, recommend a friend to join us.

Top Tip for the Autumn

Do you have more bedrooms in your home than people?
The problem with the rates system is that those living alone
and practising the life of a water-saving maharishi taking a
monthly bath and using the same water to wash clothes and
the car pay exactly the same as a neighbour with eight kids
and a nervous bladder.
So here's my simple rule of thumb: if you have more or the
same number of bedrooms in your home as you do people,
check out whether you will save by switching to a water meter.
After all, water bills are based roughly on house value, so a
large,
sparsely populated
home
is likely to
be
disproportionately costly. Plus, as meters are free, switching
should be worthwhile.

It wasn't so long ago that people over 50 years of age

were revered for their wisdom and knowledge of
history. They were known as elders and were top of our
hierarchy. We can now be forgiven to sometimes feel an
expensive inconvenience as we mature.
Purple Trust would like to turn back the pages and show
the debt society owes to our members. To this end, we
would like to produce a booklet of quotes you send us on
events you have experienced. Perhaps you feel they
have helped shape the world we live in today.
For example; how you entertained yourselves, memories
of school life, first few years of leaving school and
starting work, how you fed the family and general
reminiscences of how values have changed for better or
worse.
Send your thoughts to Yvonne by email or post (address
on back page).

The self-help guides are part of a much wider campaign called the 5
ways to wellbeing which is being led by Bedfordshire Clinical
Commissioning Groups, Bedford Borough Council and Central
Bedfordshire Council. The campaign aims to raise the awareness of the
importance of mental health and wellbeing and how small lifestyle
changes can have a big impact upon living well for longer.
The Five Ways to Wellbeing are:
1. Connect With the people around you; with family, friends,
colleagues and neighbours.
2. Be Active Discover a physical activity you enjoy that suits your
level of mobility and fitness.
3. Take Notice Be curious. Be aware of the world around you and what
you are feeling.
4. Keep Learning Try something new. Set a challenge you will enjoy
achieving.
5. Give Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Join a
community group. Carry out a random act of kindness.
