Title : Points to ponder while changing motor for oil pump application
Following points can be considered before changing the motor for pump, from
energy saving point of view.
1.
Find the GD square value of new motor to be purchased and compare it with that of
pump, GD square of motor should be more than that of pump.
2.
Normally oil circulation pumps are positive displacement pumps and started with
open discharge condition. Hence starting torque and starting current carrying
capacity also should be checked.
3.
Please conrm whether the pump is positive displacement pump, In that case please
check what will the maximum oil pressure that may be developed in the system, if
there is scope for increase in pressure in the system, then power consumption will
increase. We have to check the power required at maximum pressure that can be
developed. At cold start, the oil viscosity will be high and accordingly the oil pressure
will also increase and so power consumption will be maximum. We have to select the
motor to suit the maximum power requirement.
Idea of replacing the existing motor with energy efcient motor is a great one,
involving certain amount of investment.
Normally motors are designed to take maximum load demand of the pump and safety
margins are not provided. There is a general observation that when motors are
underutilized their efciency becomes poor. Motor selection should aim at motors to
run at full load with maximum efciency and not at partial load. Now a days, motors
are also manufactured to have same efciency at various load, if you can locate one
such motor, you can save the energy with new motor, even at partial load, but
investment is more leading to more payback period.
One must take motor suppliers' assurance on safe running of motor at full load.
Chances of overload. It can be high because of high viscosity during cold start or
partial clogging of oil pipes.
Ambient temperature. If the ambient temperature is greater than 40 deg C, the
motors can not be used up tp their rated capacity, & have to be derated.
Additional heat generating equipment nearby or restricted airow- This may be partly
accounted for in the rise in ambient.
Cost of failure of equipment. - If the failure of this motor leads to a very high loss,
chances are that every one will want to play it safe.
Consideration of maintenance practices like cleaning of motor surface for heat
dissipation, periodic change of bearings etc.
Precise selection of the motor keeping in view all the above, requires considerable
expertise.
Idea of saving energy is commendable, but equally it is fraught with a risk
which cannot be neglected.

Question:
What is the difference in TDD and THD with reference to harmonic standard?
Answer:
TDD means Total Demand Distortion. THD means Total Harmonic Distortion.
Demand current is the fundamental component of the maximum current that a plant
draws from the source. Percentage TDD means (Harmonic Current / Demand
Current) X 100. Demand current is less than the maximum continuous current
capacity or the rated current capacity of the plant. Suppose the Demand Current of
the plant is 1000 Amps. A certain non-linear load, for example a Variable Frequency
drive, is drawing 500Amps and at this current level it is having THD of 30%. Assume
that this is the only non-linear load that the plant is having. Hence in this case the
harmonic current in the plant will be 500 x 30 / 100 = 150Amps. TDD in this case will
be ( 150/1000) X 100 = 15%. Whether the plant complies with IEEE standard will be
decided by TDD and not by THD.
