Chapter 1
Statement of the Problem and Its Background

Introduction
Since the beginning of recorded time, people have been thinking about the end of the world
and making predictions about how and when it might happen. Most major religions have their
own theories on the topic which often include fateful battles between the forces of good and evil
and cataclysmic natural disasters. Many believe that ancient prophecies indicate that change is
coming. Predictions vary widely about what will happen. They range from total, all-out
apocalypse to some kind of quantum shift in human awareness and consciousness. Yet they all
agree that big change is coming for planet earth and for human race.
The MAYAN CALENDAR The Pyramid of Consciousness that had become popular
because of its known prophecy about the end of the world. The Mayan people did not have the
advanced technologies we have today, but they were amazingly expert in astrology and
mathematics. In addition, there were many unsolved riddles. They had advanced road systems,
but did not use wheels. Therefore they didn't have to raise cattle and horses. However, they
knew how to make wheels, for later people found out that the Maya used wheels to make toys
for their kids. They ornamented the door of a moon temple with images of the back of the Moon.
It's not the first time that the possibility of apocalypse has sparked the human imagination.
Doomsday prophecies have a rich history, and believers tend to overlook the scientific evidence
that disproves them. In this case, the doomsdayers fail to take into account the intricacies of

2
Maya timekeeping.
Movies, documentaries, books, blogs and websites are doing their best convince many in
the public that some kind of catastrophe awaits us around the winter solstice of 2012, and that
its cause will be an astronomical or geophysical event, rumors that are passed from other that
leads to many versions. Some people are seriously worried, others are mildly concerned, while
others are cynical about both the scare mongers and the scientists who rebut these suggestions.
Doomsday 2012 represented both a challenge and opportunity for science communication and
education. And those that still holds the word of the Lord as stated in the bible clearly stated that
no one knows the time of His coming or the end of the world (Matthew 24:36, 42; Acts 1:7).
Those who claim to know the time of the end are claiming to know something that Jesus said
they cannot know.
Specially now that we live in a material age. Modern people care about money, beautiful
people, desires, pleasure, achievement, power and social status more than anything else. Those
people who are not interested in these things have to struggle in the dirty undercurrent of life.
Mental collapse due to these modern values is common. People become more and more
indifferent to evil, violence, was, disasters, plague, hunger, terrorism, and the craziness of
society.
It is definitely not forceful control by governments of laws. For laws are written by people.
Laws are bound to have loopholes. Violators can evade punishment by virtue of status,
relationships or money. In addition, laws can only punish behavior that is seen by others; they
cannot restrict people's hearts. It cannot be a break-through in science, because it is exactly
science that led people to pursue material pleasures and deviate from morality and consciousness

more and more.

The importance of this study is to share about what others think about the said near ending
of the world according to mayan prophecy, movies that shows about the apocalypse and other
mediums related to the said study and to inform and give other researchers a background study
of the effects & insights of college students in the College of Education of the Polytechnic
University of the Philippines. The role of the study is to show the relation of other perception
and how it will affects the whole being specially the spiritual being of a person.
It is for reasons that the researchers are interested in taking the topic a more serious about
the perceptions of the freshman students in the College of Education of Polytechnic University
of the Philippines about the end of the world using the Mayan calendar and movies that shows
about said study.
End of the world was predicted to happen last December 12 ,2012 . This was big issue
,many experts held studies about this topic . And for the show business it is a good opportunity
for them to produce apocalyptic movies that shows survival at the very end .

Background of the study

There are many research held for the End of the world, Many prediction. Scientist reviews many
documents, such as past documents to relate this End of the world movie to the normal
humans lives in our modern times. This thing they called The End Signs scared or frightened
the people. They say this thing could be the possible things happen in the future of humanity

4
when the unexpected time comes.
Because of these following happenings in Movies that also spread in social media people often
think of what to do when that time comes, for some people who believe in this movies. They
prepare themselves for the judgment day. Since, Before Christ people predict the end of the time
but nobody Is right, only the creator knows when, where, and why would such thing happen to
the humanity.

Delving into post-apocalyptic fiction and film provided me with another such opportunity.
Today we are exposed to constant talk about terrorist attacks, biological warfare, environmental
disturbances, pandemics, and technological disasters. Writers and filmmakers are obviously
responding to these cultural anxieties.
Its important to remember, too, that these works about monsters and global meltdowns are also
fun. They give us a safe space in which to contemplate the forbidden and the horrifying, to
ponder what-if situations, and to observe human nature in all its complexities.
But when we close the book or exit the theater, the nightmare is over.
Can you offer any tips for surviving in a post-apocalyptic world?
As nearly as I can tell from all these novels and films, you should choose five or six very
reliable friendsone of whom should be a doctorand assign each a survival chest to prepare
and bury underground in an agreed-upon location, well ahead of the apocalypse.
For some this is just the Mayan equivalent of the dawn of the new millennium, but for
others the end of the long count signals the end of the world. Fuelled perhaps by disaster movies
like 2012, and intimations of an approaching Armageddon, around one in ten people

5
worldwide think the world will end in 2012, while 9% of Australians think this.
The idea that the world will end in 2012 is of course a myth, but myths can tell their own
stories. British author Karen Armstrong in her beautiful book A Short History of Myth argues
that myth enables us to live more intensely in the world. Its not delusion, nor is it scientific
truth, rather myths reflect the world in which we live.
The 2012 doomsday phenomenon tells us that people are uncertain about their futures. The
world as we know it is changing global warming is changing our ecology, the economy seems
more precarious, we feel less certain. The myth is a way for people to express their fear about
these changes and the uncertainty they bring.
Sociologist Adam Possamai recently pointed out that the writers of post-apocalyptic fiction
no longer feel the need to give a reason for the apocalypse. It is taken for granted that the
contemporary reader will understand that there are plenty of plausible causes of apocalypse. This
was never the case in previous generations.
There are many websites, books, and articles about the end of the Mayan long count in
2012. Part of what I read in this literature is an attempt to find other ways to live well in a time
of potentially apocalyptic change. Some people discover the courage to live in a world that is
uncertain. They discover hope in a time of loss and sadness. They discover it is possible to live
well with less.
Joseph Gelfer has argued that there are some questionable forms of cultural appropriation in the
2012 movement, such as those who make money from books and tours based on indigenous
prophecies of a 2012 catastrophe. However, I think there is something else important going on.
The year 2012 will be much like any other year of course, but the deeper anxiety that

6
underlies the 2012 myth will remain. The myth in fact demonstrates a failure to adequately
engage with the changes ahead.
It would be easy to dismiss those who embrace a mythical apocalypse as delusional, but in
my view, their belief in the myth is understandable. It is much harder to tell a more complex,
ambivalent story that acknowledges change and loss along with growth and discovery.
Mainstream Australia is still struggling to understand the idea of living well in the context
of long term and massive economic, social, and ecological change problems that are unlikely
to go away after today.
So what does happen when nothing happens on 21 December 2012?
If we look at historical examples, when prophecy fails people dont stop believing. The
Jehovahs Witnesses have predicted the second coming many times and they still exist.
American social psychologist Leon Festingers study of The Seekers in When Prophecy
Fails demonstrates that it can actually serve as a moment to re-invigorate a group or movement.
The same thing will happen with 2012, but in a more diffuse way.
When nothing happens today, there will simply be another revelation, another turning point,
another intimation of apocalypse. But it is also an opportunity to start a discussion about the
changes that are taking place in our society and address the fears the behind the myth.

Significance of the Study

This research is significant because it may help the following:

To the students:
This research can give awareness to the students perception regarding the effects of watching
the end of the world movies to their daily living.
To the viewers:
This research will help the viewers in evaluating and assessing the movies they watch if they
were going to believe the idea of the movie or just disregard it. It can also give them sufficient
information about the pros and cons of the movies related to the end of the world.
To the citizens:

8
This research can give ideas or information about end of the world movies, either it is based on
scientific studies, superstitious beliefs, or through prophecies. It will also help them to validate
first the movies they are watching before believing on it.
To the future researcher:
This research can help the future researcher by means of guiding them to the said topic, they can
also get reliable data and informations about the effect of end of the world movies. And lastly
they can also strengthen this study so that they would be able to enhance or improve the details
of this study.

Scope and Limitation

Movies Where The World Actually Gets Destroyed In The End

Lots of movies try to end with a bang but only a few end with the entire human race
being wiped out, or the world being torn asunder. Hollywood all too often wimps out on
showing us total oblivion, but there are a few movies that go all the way.
In honor of a certain recent film we won't mention because it's still a spoiler, here's a complete
list of movies where the world gets completely trashed at the end. Global demolition derby time!
Warning: This post gives away the endings of a bunch of films. Some people might consider that
spoilery.
When Worlds Collide
It's that rare movie that actually lives up to its title! A star named Bellus is on a collision course
with Earth and instead of trying to figure out a way to stop the impact, people concentrate on
creating an ark so that a handful of people can get off the planet in time, landing on a habitable
world orbiting Bellus. (Don't ponder the physics of this, it'll only make your head hurt.)

On the Beach
We debated whether to add this film because there are still people alive at the end of it. But
it's pretty clear that they're doomed, and there's not going to be any last-minute reprieve for
humanity. The commenters, including Dr. Emilio Lizardo, convinced us to add it to the list.

11
Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
This is pretty much the classic "world gets destroyed in the end" film. The studio
behindStrangelove also created a couple other "the world almost gets destroyed in the end"
movies around the same time, including Fail-Safe. But this time around, we actually get to see
the global armageddon although to be fair, there are some suggestions that a few survivors
may remain below ground, breeding with suitable women and preserving their precious fluids.
Beneath The Planet of the Apes
You might not have seen this one coming, especially when you first saw the first sequel toPlanet
of the Apes. Instead of just giving us more of what we liked about the first movie, they go
completely nuts with telepathic mutants who worship a doomsday bomb which gets triggered
at the end of the movie, wiping out all life on Earth. Because why the hell not? It's not like
they're going to want to make ten more sequels. Oh, wait.

Miracle Mile
There's a huge nuclear holocaust, and it certainly looks as though the last survivors are toast at
the end of the film although to be fair, we don't see the whole world destroyed.

Last Night
This film arguably created a whole genre one where people know the world is going to end,
and they spend the whole movie dealing with it, and then in the final scenes, the world does end.
It's not clear what's causing this particular cataclysm, it's just happening. This film is also
notable for featuring legendary director David Cronenberg as a power company owner who calls

12
all his customers, one by one, to reassure them the gas will stay on until the world ends. Instead
of, you know, going and taking part in end-of-the-world orgies or anything.

The Rapture
Mimi Rogers is left behind (so to speak) in a nightmarish wasteland full of monsters, after she
rejects God's mercy. But it doesn't look like there's really a world left for her to live in instead
she's shunted into Purgatory, to go live with Jack, Locke and the rest.

Dead or Alive
Legendary weirdo director Takashi Miike makes a gangster crime thriller, full of surprise
comeuppances and insanity that skirts the edge of comedy until the very ending, when he
goes off the deep end and destroys the whole shebang. One of the gangsters tears his own arm
off and then shoots the other one, who pulls a glowing fireball out of his chest that destroys the
entire planet. Because, sure.

Save the Green Planet

We rented this movie years ago, and it was so weird and confusing, we blotted it from our
minds. But in a nutshell, the psycho who's holding an executive captive in his basement because
he thinks the executive is an evil alien is right. And the evil alien gets rescued by his fellow
aliens, and destroys the Earth at the end.

Mercano the Martian

13
This Argentinian animated movie ends with Earth's complete destruction when the protagonist
cuts the wrong wire after all the world's computers have been linked together into one enormous
bomb.
Southland Tales
Actually, we're not sure what the hell happens at the end of this film there's a levitating ice
cream truck, an exploding zeppelin, and a handshake that we're told will tear the universe in
half. It's all the sort of story where you inhale, rather than infer, crucial details. But we think that
Seann William Scott somehow triggers a cataclysmic doodad thingy by touching himself.

Knowing
This is what happens when you trust Nic Cage to save the world. If it had been Tom Cruise we'd
have been dancing barefoot on top of a skyscraper in the end. But Nic spends the whole movie
piecing together the clues and investigating the weird pebble creeps who are spying on his son,
only to miss the boat on the whole "Earth destroyed except for two kids and a bunny" scheme
that's been hatching since the 1950s.
Kaboom
This is another movie where we're not quite sure what happened at the end. Thomas Dekker is a
college kid who's trying to decide whether he's really bisexual by having lots and lots of sex, and
there are weird cultists and crazy conspiracies. And Dekker gets kidnapped and then
un-kidnapped and his oft-naked surfer roommate turns out not to be a surfer at all. Long story
short, it turns out a lot of the weirdness in the film is down to a doomsday cult, which brings

14
about doomsday. Love the red button. Every doomsday device should have a red button.

The Vanishing on 7th Street

Weird shadows swallow up the entire human race, and a few people manage to hold out in a bar
for a while listening to shitty music on a jukebox and arguing with Hayden Christensen. And
then the shadows win. I guess. Here's the ending, narrated by someone who hated the film even
more than we did.

Melancholia
Another movie where you see the end of the world coming a long way off it's teased at the
start of the film and then you actually get to see Kirsten Dunst and the others get wiped out,
along with an unfortunate horse. Takeaway lesson: A makeshift fort made out of twigs really
won't protect you from a rogue planetary collision.
4:44: Last Day on Earth
In Abel Ferrara's new movie, everybody knows the world is going to end at 4:44 AM Eastern
time, because of Al Gore. And no amount of yoga or watching YouTube videos of the Dalai
Lama can forestall the inevitable.

Apocalypse Now: why the movies want the world to end every year
The last few years have begun with predictions of the Apocalypse hanging over us.
The Rapture was supposed to come in 2011, with US preacher Harold Camping first saying

15
it would come in May then readjusting his sights to October. Last year, of course, brought us
predictions of the Mayan Apocalypse, which passed with lots of parties but no lasting fireworks.
With solar activity expected to reach a cyclical peak in 2013, this year was shaping up as another
big year for apocalyptic fears, however NASA have recently downgraded their predictions for
solar storms.
A look at Hollywoods release list for this year tells us that 2013 will be anything but
apocalypse free.
Diabolo Codys remake of the Sam Rami classic The Evil Dead continues the zombie
explosion of recent years, while Brad Pitt also gets to run from a zombie apocalypse and go all
out to protect his family in World War Z.
Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Tom Cruise, Will and Jaden Smith and Guillermo del Toro all
have post-apocalyptic blockbusters scheduled and this year we even get apocalyptic comedy.
The Shaun of the Dead team are back with The Worlds End where five mates unite for a pub
crawl that could literally end all pub crawls.
The National Geographic Channels new season of Doomsday Preppers begins this week.
Their episode guide promises stories of a tornado-fearing farmer building an underground
Noahs Ark for his animals and a family man preparing for a nuclear-powered terrorist attack.
The series brings us weekly stories from the survivalist movement who are going all out to
prepare for the worst.
When Doomsday Preppers first season launched last year, it fitted the 2012 zeitgeist but the
new season has a more eerie resonance with the widely reported news that Sandy Hook school
shooter Adam Lanzas mother Nancy was a prepper.

16
As J. M Berger pointed out in Foreign Policy, it is far too easy to blame Nancys enthusiasm
for guns or her survivalist beliefs for the horrific events in Newtown. However, survivalist
doomsday beliefs have been associated with a number of other terrorist and shooting deaths.
Berger points out that there is very little research about the mental state of preppers. But he
believes anecdotal observations point to a higher incidence of mental illness among hardcore
preppers than in the general population. He adds:
The nature of their beliefs and social networks may create obstacles to diagnosis and
treatment. There can be fine lines between reasonable fear, intense fear, and irrational
fear, and some preppers subscribe to conspiracy theories that are completely nuts,
focused on supposed threats from sinister chemtrails to the Illuminati (or both and then
some).
World ending, conspiratorial beliefs are easy to dismiss as symptoms of possible mental
illness but sociologists, psychologists, theologians and literary scholars who have studied
apocalyptic narratives and beliefs are more inclined to speak of them as a form of sense making.
Apocalypse is the Greek name of the last book of the Christian Bible and colloquially it has
come to mean a world-ending catastrophe because of the fiery visions of plaques, famines,
earthquakes, wars and global slaughter described. But the word is Greek for revelation or
unveiling. The proliferation of apocalyptic myths are in fact trying to reveal something. And
their message is just as much about a possible golden future as it is about a gloomy end.
The apocalyptic myth is uniquely associated with the utopian: they are two sides of the one
coin. The Bibles Book of Revelation is filled with horrible world-ending visions, but it ends
with the promise of 1000 years of peace.

17
Even Hollywoods slate of apocalyptic disaster films arent as black and white as they seem.
Western Australian academic Mick Broderick has suggested that rather than analyse these films,
which undoubtedly celebrate a dazzling array of cataclysmic moments, under the rubric of the
aesthetics of disaster, as Sontag famously did, they ought more rightly be seen as being
primarily about survival.
The apocalyptic myth, which seems to exist in one form or another in all cultures, is doing
what all classic myth does. It is trying to hold in tension two opposite possibilities and visualise
what might emerge.
It is a fragile posture of hope, that stands firmly in the swirl of apocalyptic omens predicting
bad endings and dreams of the future.

Apocalypse myths: Show our fear of the world as we know it
If you believe the hype, the end of the world has finally come. The Mayan calendars long
count began on 13 August 3114 BCE and will end today on 21 December 2012. Why do people
believe the world will end?
For some this is just the Mayan equivalent of the dawn of the new millennium, but for

After the End: A Look at Post-Apocalyptic Books and Films
End-of-world scenarios are pervasive these daysa fact not lost on Sue Schopf, who
decided to create an entire course on post-apocalyptic novels and films, which shell teach this
fall. In the following video, Schopf invites us to ponder an existence after the end.
For the last few years, weve seen a surge in novels, films, TV programs, and video games that
focus on end-of-the-world and survivalist narratives.

20
The Hunger Games, The Passage, and World War Z have proven that the audience is
huge. The Walking Dead is said to be the most watched series in basic cable history.
And Doomsday Preppers is the most watched program ever on the National Geographic
channel. The Last of Usscored the biggest video game launch of 2013 so far.
All of these things made me wonder why these stories are so popular at this moment in time.
You have also taught a course about the vampire in literature and film. What is it about these
genres that speak to you?
For many years, I taught primarily nineteenth-century British poetrymy first
love. Eventually, I found my way to early-twentieth-century literature, which I also love. In
truth, I had zero interest in popular culture.
The vampire craze was at its peak. I knew these works were speaking to the largely female
audience in a primal way. So I spent months researching the history of the genre and the folklore
behind the vampire figure. I learned some fascinating things.
As I read more vampire fiction, I noticed that authors of all periods used the vampire as a
metaphor for a range of cultural anxieties and repressed fantasies.
Delving into post-apocalyptic fiction and film provided me with another such opportunity.
Today we are exposed to constant talk about terrorist attacks, biological warfare, environmental

The stockpile:
Sustenance: canned foods, salt, powdered milk, flour, cornmeal, spices, and lots of hard candy
and chewing gum for the kids.
Thirst: bottled water (lots!), soda, and whiskey (for medicinal purposes, of course!).
DIY: tools like hammers, screwdrivers, shovels, axes, crowbars, etc.
The doctors bag: medication, disinfectants, surgical instruments, and lots of bandages.
Personal: soap, shaving cream, old-fashioned straight-edge razors, toothpaste and
toothbrushes, blankets, eyeglasses, a needle and thread, sunscreen, winter coats and boots. Oh,
and bug spray.
The practical: motor oil, gasoline, kerosene lamps, camp stoves, candles and matches, pen
and paper, fishing tackle, flashlights, lots of batteries, tires, a short-wave radio, guns and
ammunition, maybe a bow and lots of arrows.
The cultural: We mustnt forget about entertainment on those long, post-apocalyptic
nights: so a chest of our favorite books would be most welcome, and perhaps a musical
instrument. After all, we will eventually need to rebuild the culture, along with the community.

Chapter III
Research Methodology

Research Design
The main objective of this study is to know how the effects of end of the world movies
and Mayan Calendar prophecy affect the views of freshmen students in College of education in
Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
To realize the objectives of this study the researcher used descriptive method, there are
many kinds of descriptive method and the researcher used survey questionnaire to gather the
data. The researchers believe that this method is the best way to gather the data from the chosen
respondents. We use this method to describe the views of freshmen students regarding the
effects of end of the world movies and Mayan Calendar Prophecies that talk about the end of the
world.

Data Gathering Procedure

The data for this research were collected using a survey questionnaire. The survey was
created using suitable questions modified from related research and individual questions formed
by the researcher. The survey was comprised of 33 questions, which were related to the
participants perception regarding the effects of end of the world movies and Mayan calendar
prophecy. In the questionnaire, Likert scale was used to determine if the respondent agreed or
disagreed in a statement. After the professor validated the questionnaire, these were distributed to
the freshmen students of college of education in Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Sta.
Mesa, Manila. The researchers assured confidentiality of their survey sheets since the identities

23
are not important. The researchers also understood that peoples consciousness may also affect
their honesty and effectiveness in answering the survey, and so, the researchers gave people the
option of being anonymous. Participants were given time to respond and then the researchers
collected the surveys right after they finished answering. There were no incentives offered for
participating in the research.

Population and Sampling

The target population consisted of 100 freshmen students in college of education in polytechnic
university of the Philippines. This target population has considered quite small , hence the
researchers to chosen freshmen students as respondents.

Statistical Treatment of

Data

After retrieing the accomplishe copies of the questionnaire, we recorded the answers of the
individual respondents in a tally form. Then the data were transferred to a table form for the
statistical significance of the data gathered for the problems.
The formula is:
X- male

n- total number of respondents

Y- female

P percentage

male:
P= X /

100 x 100

female:
P=Y /

100 x 100
