Transportation System is Showing Signs of Strain

The societal costs of transportation

6 Million+ Crashes every year

32,000+ deaths annually
Leading cause of death for ages <34
Estimated 1 - 2 million deaths globally
$240B death and injury
$100B stuck in traffic

30 % of carbon emissions
70 % of oil consumption

How does it work?

V2V for Safety
Vehicles broadcast a standardized
Basic Safety Message (BSM)
10 times every second
range from 300 1500 meters
Vehicles warn their driver if
there is a risk of collision
BSMs are completely
anonymous, and contain no
identifying information

11

How does it work?

V2I for Mobility & Safety
Infrastructure Road Side Units (RSUs)
broadcast standardized messages

weather conditions
road works warnings
congestion or traffic condition alerts
traffic signal phase and timing (SPAT)

Vehicles listen, filter, and provide info

to driver
Vehicles also broadcast to RSUs
speed, location, heading
wipers on, wheels slipping, etc

The MTC
A public/private R&D partnership
that will lead a revolution in mobility
and develop the foundations
for a commercially viable ecosystem
of connected and automated vehicles

Demonstrating an entire system of

connected and automated transportation
on the streets of southeastern Michigan
through 2021

Needed AV Research

How does V2x enhance automation?

How do we ensure cybersecurity for CAVs?

How do humans interact with AVs?
How do CAVs interaction with legacy vehicles
and existing infrastructure and systems?
How will insurance and liability, and licensing be
implemented to create maximum benefit?

PILLAR 3: Mcity

INFORMATION SECURITY RISKS

Whos perpetrating
breaches?

How do breaches occur?

What commonalities
exist?

SECURE ACCESS AND IT BURDEN ARE TOP OF MIND FOR CUSTOMERS

40% of the calls to my
team are password
related thats too
much of a burden. 1

I need a user friendly

solution from ANY device to
access sanctioned cloudbased applications, almost
30% of my users use their
personal devices for work.

36% of my businesscritical applications are

housed in the cloud, yet
my team isnt aware of
nearly half of them I
need better access
control. 2

I need a way to ensure

secure access to my
information and I know
passwords alone are not
enough.
