ELECTROLYSIS
In the middle age of 19th century on 1791-1867, Michael faraday learn about the experiment
of electrolysis. Electrolysis is the passage of an electric current through an ionic substance that is
either molten or dissolved in a suitable solvent, resulting in chemical reactions at the electrodes and
separation of materials.
The cell that used for electrolysis is called an Electrolysis cell. Electrolysis cell is formed
from some parts, that part is :

Electrolyte
The Electrolysis cell is contain an electrolyte. Electrolyte is a substance that can flow an electricity
current. Electrolyte on the electrolysis process can use an acid, alkali, or salt, and also the fused of
salt or molten oxide halides.

Electrode
There are also two electrode that connected with a direct current power supply. If the current is
flown, the chemical reaction will be held on the electrodes. Electrodes itself is classified in two,
cathode and anode.
1. Cathode
Cathode is a place where the reduction reaction is happen. Cathode connected to the negative
pole of the power supply. The example of the reduction reaction is, H+ ion was reducted to H2.
The reaction is :

2H+(aq) + 2e

H2(g)

2. Anode
Anode is a place where the oxidation reaction is happen. Anode connected to the positive pole
of the power supply. The example of the oxidation reaction is, OH ion was oxidated to H 2O
and O2. The reaction is :

4OH (aq)

2H2O( l ) + O2(g) + 4e

On the electrolysis cell, the electrical power will make an chemical reaction happen. The
example of the electrolysis reaction is the electrolysis of NaCl (l) with an inert electrode Carbon (C)
that not reacted within. Only Na + ion that reducted and Cl will changed become Cl 2. If the reaction is
added, the electrolysis reaction is gained. So, the electrolysis reaction of NaCl (l) is :

NaCl(l)

Na+ + Cl

Anode

: 2 Cl

Cl2 (g) + 2e

Cathode

: 2 Na+ + 2e

2 Na(s)

Cell reaction: 2 Na+ + 2 Cl

2 Na(s) + Cl2 (g)

Usually the electrolysis is used on industry for example the rust guard. To make our metal
prevent with rust, we have to layer it with another metal. For example we layered iron with nikel or
zink. That process is called plating, and usually use a metal like nikel, zink, cromium, silver and gold.
The another application of the electrolysis reaction is to pure the metal from another metal. That
process is called purification. And also there are still so many thing that can be done with electrolysis,
thats our responsibility to discover it.
Electrolysis has many other uses:
A battery works by the reverse process to electrolysis. Humphry Davy found that lithium acts

as an electrolyte and provides electrical energy.

Production of oxygen for spacecraft and nuclear submarines.

Electroplating is used in layering metals to fortify them. Electroplating is used in many

industries for functional or decorative purposes, as in vehicle bodies and nickel coins.

Production of hydrogen for fuel, using a cheap source of electrical energy.

Electrolytic Etching of metal surfaces like tools or knives with a permanent mark or logo.
Electrolysis is also used in the cleaning and preservation of old artifacts. Because the

process separates the non-metallic particles from the metallic ones, it is very useful for cleaning old
coins and even larger objects.
I think thats all my presentation about electrolysis. I just wanna say, good bye, and thank
you.

electrolysis on NaOH solution with electrode Pt, the reaction is :
